At least eight people accused of serious crimes have cut off their ankle bracelets this weekend, sparking major police manhunts. Officers have tracked down six of the alleged offenders, but two remain at large. The police union says while officers are doing everything they can to apprehend the men, the alleged criminals should never have been released into the community in the first place.

00:02Three men accused of serious crimes, including armed robbery, aggravated home burglary and obstructing a public officer.
00:11Police say all three were released on bail with an ankle bracelet, a monitoring device they've allegedly cut off.
00:18You don't get an electronic monitoring bracelet unless you're a dangerous criminal.
00:21These people are dangerous. They're dangerous to the community.
00:24This weekend, a total of eight people took off their trackers.
00:28Each breach triggers a significant response.
00:31The union says every time someone cuts a device, six police officers are required to track them down, and it's
00:38becoming more common.
00:39Our officers are then being called on urgently to then go and capture them when they cut their bracelets.
00:45That stops them from attending family domestic violence. It stops them from attending serious crimes that are occurring.
00:50The union says electronic tracking is being used more than ever.
00:53It's shifting a burden on managing alleged offenders from prisons to frontline police.
00:59Justice aren't managing their criminals effectively, so the police are being asked to do another job, another job for another
01:05government agency.
01:06The Department of Justice told ABC News it doesn't determine whether an offender is released into the community or the
01:13conditions imposed, including electronic monitoring.
01:16Those decisions are a matter for the courts.
01:19The opposition blaming overcrowding in WA prisons.
01:23These people should be in prison.
01:26If it wasn't for the mismanagement of our prison system by this Labor government, those people would not be out
01:33on jail with ankle bracelets on that they can cut off.
01:36We continue to make sure that we can bring technology and all measures that are appropriate to ensure that we
01:43have the toughest conditions on anyone that gets released into the community.
01:47Police are using social media to track down the remaining fugitives, telling the public they shouldn't be approached.
