00:25Throughout the years, my hair has been long and really short and I've had bangs and this
00:32is the first time that I'll actually be bleaching my hair and coloring it.
00:36So I'm a little bit nervous but I'm mostly excited for this hair transformation.
00:40My last haircut was maybe six months ago before my surgery.
00:47A little over a year ago, we lost my mom to breast cancer.
00:51It encouraged me to go and get genetic testing.
00:56I went and I tested positive for the BRCA gene and I got a preventative double mastectomy.
01:04The reason I'm doing this hair transformation today is because after everything that I've
01:10gone through, I just wanted to do something for myself and reclaim my body and my appearance
01:18and my femininity, now is the right time to do this hair transformation.
01:24My name is Liz and I'm a colorist at Spoken Wheel in Soho.
01:27I've been doing hair for 11 years.
01:30Hi, I'm Liz.
01:31Hi, I'm Caitlin.
01:32Nice to meet you.
01:33So we're doing some hair color today.
01:35Yes.
01:35Great.
01:35Tell me a little bit about it.
01:37So I want to do purple a little bit darker in the roots and then getting lighter towards
01:41the ends.
01:42Great.
01:42That sounds awesome.
01:43What kind of purple are you thinking?
01:44Any kind of purple that fades nicely into a lavender would be great.
01:48So we want some lighter lavender bits into the ends.
01:50Yes.
01:50So today we're going to go ahead and balayage your hair with some foils.
01:53Get it nice and light.
01:54We're also going to do a nice color in between to get a really rich purple reflection.
01:58We'll shampoo you out and then we'll do like a nice lavender color all over everything.
02:02How's that sound?
02:03Great.
02:03I can't wait.
02:04We're going to start with a full balayage on Caitlin's hair with a lightening product.
02:08We're going to melt a couple colors in together just to give her a really seamless blend.
02:20Then between the foils we're going to go in with a permanent hair color to give a really
02:24great purple reflection all over and deepen her natural a little bit.
02:28When my mom was sick, she shaved her hair and my mom would joke all the time that she
02:36was going to dye it purple so this felt like the right color to kind of honor her.
02:44Hair to me is freedom.
02:46The freedom to choose how you look and how you want other people to see you.
02:49The freedom to feel good in your own skin and I think it's a really beautiful thing
02:53when anybody can take the power to do that for themselves.
02:59We're going to tone out any remaining yellow followed by a couple different shades of direct
03:05dye to get a really nice blend and gradient color.

03:13So we've got the color all rinsed out.

03:19I actually just got my reconstruction done a few days ago and now I just felt like it
03:25was a really good time to do something for myself.

03:35Definitely a trim.
03:36I want to grow it out longer but anything that's kind of low maintenance but I'm pretty
03:40much open to whatever you think.

04:21I think you picked the perfect mix of colors for me that I probably wouldn't even have been

04:55I think that my mom would just be really happy that I was doing something that was just for
05:04me and not for anybody else and I think that she would really love it and then she would
