00:00I've never dyed my hair because I've just been so nervous about it.
00:03I'm scared that something will go wrong.
00:05What if it all falls out?
00:07Or what if it just looks terrible and I shouldn't never dye it?
00:11What if this is the only color that I can pull off?
00:16Hi, I'm Sharifa, and today I'll be dyeing my hair red.
00:20So I have never dyed my hair before, mainly because I was just too nervous.
00:24I wanted to do something drastic, but not like too drastic, like blonde.
00:27I don't think I'm ready for that yet, although that would be really cool.
00:30So I feel like red was like a good compromise.
00:32It's a color that I feel would be flattering on me.
00:35Hopefully, fingers crossed.
00:36I'm going to be 30 in September, so I just like, you know what?
00:38Let's do this. I've always wanted to, so why not?
00:50Hey, Sharifa, welcome to Rapita.
00:52I'm Sergio.
00:53And I'm Linda.
00:54So what do you have in mind today?
00:56So I want to do red hair, but I wasn't really sure which kind of red I wanted, like an
01:01orangey red or like a deeper red, but Zendero just recently colored their hair.
01:06And it's like this beautiful, perfect, vibrant red.
01:10So yeah, that's exactly it.
01:12We're going to lift your hair up first to get a lighter base, and then we can add your bright
01:16red to make it a vibrant one.
01:19Yeah. Are you ready?
01:20I'm ready.
01:20Then we are ready.
01:33I really like my hair, actually.
01:35I do feel it's a big part of my identity, but I feel like I relied on it too much
01:40as a kind of like a security blanket.
01:42I feel like a lot of my confidence is tied to my hair.
02:07I feel like in the last few years, I've taken a lot of risks and I've gone out and pursued
02:13things that I would have never done before.
02:15I started a YouTube channel, which I never thought I would do.
02:19I put myself out there in the public, which was really terrifying.
02:23I started to do stand-up, another very terrifying thing.
02:26Dyeing my hair compared to all that, it shouldn't be as scary.
02:30It is, for some reason, scarier.
02:49When I was in junior high school, I didn't know how to manage my hair.
02:53I was really big, really frizzy.
02:54I get a lot of mean comments about it.
02:56And then in high school, I kind of learned to manage it and deal with it.
03:00And then I noticed that people would compliment my hair a lot.
03:03Since then, my confidence has been tied to that.
03:06And I guess a lot of like validation has been tied to my hair.
03:09And now I just, I want to do something because only I want to and not because of what anyone
03:15else thinks.
03:30I feel like black hair is tied to South Asian identity a lot.
03:34And definitely hearing the elders in my community growing up saying that, you know, you should keep your hair black
03:39because that's what Bengali girls should have.
03:43It suits brown girls better and things like that.
03:46I always heard that other colors won't suit my complexion and won't suit South Asian girls.
03:52I think that's ridiculous.
03:54Why can't we have any hair color that we want?
04:17I'm hoping after I dye my hair red that people will like it.
04:21I think they will because it will be like a change.
04:23But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter as long as I like it.
04:52I think it will be like a change.
05:14I think I'm going to feel really good.
05:16I think I really need a change like this.
05:18I think I'm most excited to play around with different makeup and clothes and colors that would suit the red
05:26hair.
05:35So here's the result of your hair.
05:37What do you think about it?
05:39Oh my God.
05:40It's amazing.
05:41It's so good.
05:41I was imagining all sorts of terrible scenarios, but it came out exactly how I wanted it.
05:47It's perfect.
05:48I can't wait to play around with this.
05:49It looks so good.
05:51You're welcome.
05:52I'm a redhead.
06:00I love my new hair.
06:02I think it looks so amazing.
06:04I can't believe the transformation.
06:06I'm so excited to play around with it, to try new clothes and colors.
06:11I'm really happy that I took this risk and I'm so excited to take more.
06:17And I hope this inspires other girls to take a risk and do something that you wanted to do regardless
06:23of what community says, what anybody else says.
06:26It came out way better than I thought it would.
06:28I absolutely love it.
06:30Thank you so much for watching.
