00:00Oh, Robert.
00:02C.D. Lamb sits down with us usually every year.
00:05Fantastic interview.
00:07He's so important that we actually got our own hotel room to do it.
00:12We were sitting in this room.
00:13It looks like a kidnapping situation where we draw the curtains behind him.
00:18Brian Schottenheimer was miked up for NFL Films.
00:21He walks in this room to take off all the equipment, and he does a double take.
00:26Like, what the hell are y'all doing in the air?
00:28How'd y'all get in this room?
00:29We got C.D. Lamb.
00:31All right?
00:31So get the mic off and get to stepping out of here.
00:35We're talking to the 88.
00:37Now, the first five minutes of this, I've never had more trouble with an iPad video-wise than this thing.
00:44Apple's just not as good as Android, you know?
00:46But DJ's iPad was not working or too much.
00:49You're not going to see the first five.
00:51Storage.
00:51The storage issue.
00:53Five minutes of video.
00:54The first five minutes of video not working.
00:56It will eventually kick in for the final 12 minutes.
00:58But C.D. walks in to get refreshed from practice with two slices of watermelon.
01:04Sits down with us as he does every year in the Wild Fork Foods hot seat on the official home
01:10of America's team.
01:11Here's the sit-down with 88.
01:13All right.
01:13He's our favorite interview every year.
01:15Sitting down with us again on the home of the Cowboys in the Wild Fork Foods hot seat.
01:19Is C.D. Lamb.
01:2115 years we've been doing this and we have never been allowed to do an interview in this room.
01:27Shadi just walked in, cursed us out.
01:29How the heck did y'all get in here?
01:30So you must be important to be able to get the hotel room.
01:33We didn't want you to think we were kidnapping you or nothing sketchy.
01:36We just pulled the curtains behind you.
01:38Are you fine?
01:38Are you cool?
01:38Yeah, I'm a little comfortable in my own skin.
01:42The watermelon.
01:43Seed or seedless was RJ's first question.
01:46We go seedless.
01:47Just eat them, enjoy the watermelon, get hydrated.
01:50That's all I'm doing.
01:51I'm not worried about no seeds.
01:52I don't know how you make seedless watermelon, though.
01:56It blows my mind.
01:57Yeah, I don't know either.
01:58Because, I mean, obviously it grows from a plant, right?
02:03Or a seed.
02:04Yeah, seed, yeah.
02:06What was up with the net the other day?
02:08Oh, man, it was more of a distraction drill.
02:12Yeah, I've learned not to do what I do on my own time when there's a lot of people
02:16because they like to make it a big deal.
02:17It's not really nothing crazy.
02:18And George wasn't having it.
02:19Yeah, George wasn't going for it.
02:21He tried it.
02:21He was like, yeah, nah, I'm good.
02:22I just need to see the ball.
02:24Was that something you developed just on your own or did you know other guys who have tried it before?
02:28How did you pick that up?
02:29Junior Adams, my receiver coach, he's been doing it throughout his time.
02:34Coaching.
02:34And he had mentioned it in a meeting.
02:36And I was like, you know what?
02:38Bring the net out here.
02:39I want to see.
02:40I want to see.
02:41And my first couple, obviously, it was definitely like having to adjust.
02:46But I got the hang of it after that.
02:49What is your initial evaluation of this new defense that you're running against out here in practice?
02:53Them boys are nice.
02:55That's a fact.
02:56They do a great job of communicating.
02:57They do a great job of matching, mixing, switching up the calls.
03:02I mean, it's fun.
03:03It's actually real competitive out here.
03:06The D-line's working.
03:07Linebackers are working.
03:08DBs are talking.
03:10It's good things that you want to see, obviously, on your team.
03:13You hate training against it.
03:15But as far as on our end, we just got to go out there and compete and be the best
03:19version of ourselves.
03:20How many snaps, days does it take to tell there's something different about it?
03:29Honestly, I feel like it'll go when pads come on.
03:31Because when you go with just helmets and shells and things, the physicality changes a lot, right?
03:40Like in a nickel position or the corner position, you can't really be as hands-on as you want.
03:44You know what I'm saying?
03:45And we know that as receivers.
03:47Like the shells and the helmets situation is more catered to us offensively because they can't really put too much
03:52hands-on.
03:53They can't get away with holding because it's a big jersey, right?
03:57So I feel like day two, day three of pads and you feel the energy, you feel the emotion, you
04:03feel how the things are starting to ramp up.
04:07Like guys are getting angry.
04:09Like tensions start to spin.
04:11And, I mean, nobody liked the best of them to get got, right, or figured out, right?
04:16But in this moment when you're competing against one another and you always want to, you know, better yourself, you're
04:21not going to win every day.
04:23CeeDee Lamb here on the fan.
04:24Like did you know last year, okay, we might have a problem defensively in camp?
04:30Could you tell that early?
04:31No, honestly, I didn't think it would be as bad as it was, right?
04:36But, like, I did feel like there were some things that we could have cleaned up.
04:39The rush wasn't getting there like it was.
04:42It is now.
04:44Just different things, you know what I'm saying?
04:45And I don't really want to say too much.
04:47Sure.
04:47But it's definitely like because when I'm running my routes, I'm not really worried about what's going on behind me
04:54unless Dak is down, right, or he get tackled or sacked or whatever the case may be.
04:59But, like, I can't see what's going on behind me.
05:01But I just know what I'm dealing with.
05:02I can see the communication.
05:03I can see who's on what page.
05:05It's not me.
05:07Everybody's talking.
05:08Everybody's on the same page.
05:09Everybody's loud.
05:09I mean, at that point, you start to learn their cause.
05:12Well, I do.
05:13Yeah.
05:13I ask you how early you can know because I'm trying.
05:17We're trying not to get too excited about Revel and Durant early on because to us it looks like they're
05:23balling out here.
05:24So I'm trying not to take what we're seeing here and say, all right, Cowboys secondary going to be locked
05:29down so much more improved, but they seem to be playing well.
05:32Right.
05:33Them boys are definitely not going to be vulnerabilities.
05:36Like, that's a fact.
05:37And I'll be the first to tell you because I see them every week, every day.
05:41Just being out there competing with them boys, we talking, we getting the better of each other and informing one
05:47another.
05:48Like, if he beats me on a route, I'll be like, what you see there?
05:51Like, what was your tail?
05:52You know what I'm saying?
05:52And vice versa.
05:53I kill him on a route.
05:53He'll be like, what you see?
05:54Like, what made you want to do this?
05:56So really just more, obviously everything is physical, but, like, really tapping into that mental side of things and not
06:02really giving a tail to the opposing team or opposing player.
06:05You know what I'm saying?
06:06Man, you want to go in there, be as close to flawless as possible.
06:10And I feel like for our defenders, they've done a great job.
06:13Our DBs, they've done a great job of communicating and elevating each and every week.
06:16They got better this week than they were last week already, and I can tell you that.
06:20And, I mean, it's good to compete against.
06:22I like it.
06:23What's your initial impression of Downs?
06:25He's nice.
06:26I mean, he's everything that he's, you know, advertised.
06:28He does a great job.
06:29Again, he does a great job of communicating.
06:31Him to be a rookie and to have so much on his shoulders, I feel like it comes with the
06:36territory, right?
06:37First-round draft pick, the first pick.
06:39And then he has a bit of a name to himself.
06:42And, I mean, he stands up to it.
06:43He's a real honorable guy.
06:46Hell of an athlete.
06:47Hell of a player.
06:48He's great in the run fit.
06:49So, whoever got to deal with that, good luck.
06:52Yeah, sometimes, CD, you'll hear, like, Major League Baseball pitchers talk about, like,
06:56working combinations with their pitches or trying to set things up.
06:59When you're running routes and you're working on releases and different things,
07:02you talk about the DBs wanting to know what you see there.
07:04Are you thinking sometimes, like, a few steps ahead or, like, hey, I'm setting this up because I want to
07:08do this later?
07:09How does that approach go when you're looking at releases and running your routes?
07:12Yeah, for me, if I know I'm backside, I may give a bit slower of a release
07:17because I know where the ball is going, right?
07:19And I want to see the technique.
07:21I want to see the leverage.
07:22It starts with the leverage, right?
07:23Where am I lined up?
07:24How would you align off that, right?
07:26And if I go this way, what are your reactions?
07:29You know what I'm saying?
07:29And then, like, for me, it's all mental.
07:31So, when the ball is actually coming to me, I know your movements.
07:35I know your tendencies.
07:37You know what I'm saying?
07:38And I feel like every rep, every time it's a run game or run play or, again, I'm backside
07:43or maybe number two option, it's all about setting it up.
07:47I just want to see how you're moving.
07:48I want to see your reactions.
07:49I want to see, if I do this, what are you going to do?
07:51If I do this, are you going to stay here?
07:53Are you going to hinge?
07:54Are you going to be heavy on your outside?
07:55Are you going to – there's a lot of different things that goes into being elite at route
08:01running, for one, and then better yet, nice at releasing.
08:04Because defenders, they kind of panic sometimes and then they'll get lucky.
08:08But, like, for somebody that has a plan, there's no such thing as luck.
08:12I compare you being humble while also saying you're good to George the other day on our
08:18afternoon show.
08:19And we're going to try this with our wives.
08:22What I notice about GP is he's got a delivery where he can say something maybe a little cocky,
08:26but he says it in a funny way where he's like, yeah, like, I know I'm awesome.
08:34And it doesn't come across as cocky or he's like, yeah.
08:37And they're like, how does it feel to play with quarterbacks now?
08:39And he's like, yeah, you know, it's much better than, you know, like the last team.
08:41Whereas that usually turns into a –
08:44A headline, right.
08:45Is it a headline?
08:46But he says it in this funny way.
08:48So we're like, I wonder if it works on your wives.
08:51Hey, dinner could have been better.
08:52It's good.
08:53It could have been better.
08:54It's all in the delivery.
08:56Never the message.
08:57It's always the delivery.
08:58Never the message.
08:59It's a little for rubbery.
09:00Yeah, I need a clean shirt.
09:02Why don't you hit that laundry room?
09:03Yeah, please.
09:04That's like, you know, you mentioned – just mentioned the GP there and talked about it.
09:08Obviously, he had the whole, like – it didn't bring a whole bunch of drama.
09:11It was settled pretty early in the offseason what the season was going to be about for him.
09:16Do you guys ever have, like, discussions between each other of, like, hey, we really enjoy playing with each other.
09:20But, like, are there any discussions of, like, maybe this will be the one last shot and we've got to
09:24make the most of it?
09:25No, we've never had that type of conversation.
09:28We just – for us, it's more about being in the moment and enjoying one another because, obviously, football, the
09:35sport itself, you never know when your last play is.
09:38Like, for me, last year, my season was cut short in week three.
09:42And it was just like we had all these plans, these dreams, these admirations and things that we wanted to
09:47accomplish together.
09:48We got cut short on my end.
09:49So, it's just right now, it's just enjoying the process, man, enjoying what we can do together, enjoying the moment,
09:57staying where we are.
09:58And then when it's time to achieve what we want to achieve, we're going to do that.
10:01And then we'll get to that, like, whenever that moment comes.
10:04But then, no, we've never brought that up because the power of the tongue is pretty elite.
10:10What's misunderstood about him?
10:13Bro, he's not a crash until he has a reason.
10:17I swear.
10:18He's a good dude.
10:18He's literally funny all the time, bro.
10:20He's funny all the time.
10:22Until he feels like, all right, somebody's trying to play with me.
10:25And then that's when you get the NFL young boy.
10:27Yeah, do you ever try to coach him up on, you know, hey, this is the way they take it.
10:32Here's how you can present it.
10:34But, you know, this is what you kind of got to give to be more media savvy with it so
10:38that this helps you with the contract or doesn't give anyone a reason.
10:41Do you ever have, like, advice for him with that?
10:43Yeah, I mean, as far as advice, I just tell him, obviously, you just got to play it, take the
10:50high road every single time.
10:51I feel like he does a great job in it.
10:54I mean, as far as in the media, I feel like he do a good job.
10:56I don't really watch any of his interviews, but I do, I do understand that the position that he is,
11:02he don't need any, like, backlash.
11:05He don't need anything that's going to really negate what his worth, essentially.
11:09And that's all I'm in this area about.
11:11I want him to get every dollar in which he deserves because he's a great talent, bro.
11:16He's amazing.
11:17He's one of the best receivers that I've played with.
11:19And he seems just genuinely happy all the time.
11:22No, he is.
11:23That's him.
11:23Yeah.
11:24Until.
11:26Yeah, literally.
11:27C.D. Lamb in the Wild Fork Foods hot seat here on 105.3 The Fan.
11:31The only criticism that someone could have towards your game is the occasional drop here and there.
11:36Yep.
11:36Do you agree with that?
11:38And what do you do with it?
11:41Because you obviously have all the things you work on with the net over your head.
11:45Or how do you address it yourself with really the only thing people can pick out with you?
11:50I mean, last year I had, I want to say, eight or nine drops.
11:54Let's say nine, right?
11:54Like, I had seven versus Philly alone and I played 12 games.
12:00So, that would be two extra drops in 12 games.
12:03Well, 10 games because I played 12.
12:07But as for me, it's just really compartmentalizing all the goods that I've done.
12:14It comes with the territory, man.
12:16I just got to focus up.
12:17I'm always thinking about a big play.
12:19You know what I'm saying?
12:20And before I can even, because naturally, it's caught, it's caught, it's caught, it's caught, right?
12:26And then you get, it becomes so normal and uniform for you, you lose track of the fundamentals.
12:32So, it always just brings me back to square one.
12:35Like, catch, tuck, then make your move.
12:37Catch, tuck, then make your move.
12:38Catch, tuck, then make your move.
12:40So, like, for me, every single drop has been always taking my eyes off the ball when the ball arrived
12:44because I'm automatically thinking I caught it.
12:48Yeah.
12:48It's just the way of the game homing me and bringing me back to square one.
12:51When the ball's in the air after a drop, let's say, you know, you're in the end zone.
12:56You're open.
12:57It's in the air for 15 yards, 20 yards.
13:00In that moment, do you ever think of the previous drop?
13:03You're like, okay, never.
13:04You don't, honestly, it's been, no, you shouldn't because then that's when, because I've had
13:10games, obviously, all of my drops, I feel like it's been like three in one game, four
13:15in one game.
13:15It's never been like a drop, drop, drop, drop.
13:19It's been like a four, one game, three in one game, three in one game.
13:23It's just, it happened so much that it looked like so much, which it is, but at the end of
13:30the day, I'm only as good as my next play.
13:33So, like, I just got to go score a touchdown or something.
13:36We'll see people walking off the practice field and you can see some are like, it's
13:39just, they're upset.
13:41You can tell, all right, they may not have had the practice they wanted.
13:43Like, what do you consider a good practice?
13:46Like, how do you judge, hey, I had a good day today or I had a bad day today?
13:48As much times as I get targeted, the ball should never hit the ground, whether it's PBU,
13:53whether it's a drop, whether it's a bad ball, regardless of what it is.
13:57So, like, for me, it's very different for myself.
13:59So, anytime the ball is targeted to me, I consider it a catchable ball.
14:02I don't care if the ball is out of bounds.
14:03I don't care if it's all the way inside, right?
14:05So, for me, it's just keeping the ball off the ground, right?
14:08For one, how well am I beating the press?
14:11How well am I getting into my route?
14:13Am I getting my route depth?
14:14Am I getting, am I fighting pressure with pressure?
14:16And by that, I mean the DB's being aggressive to me.
14:18Am I getting back to my alignment?
14:20Like, it's so many things that I feel like, like, today I don't feel like I had a great
14:25practice, but I feel like I had a decent one.
14:26You know what I'm saying?
14:27I don't ever really just put myself in a great practice unless there's, for one, highlights
14:33all over the place.
14:34And then, like, for two, I'm just doing my job.
14:37I'm doing my fundamentals.
14:38I'm picking up, I'm going to push crack to safety for the running back.
14:40Like, it's just all these little things that I try to tally up, you know what I'm saying,
14:45by the end of the practice.
14:46So, when I get to meetings, I can be like, all right, I did good here.
14:49I did good here.
14:50Because, honestly, I ain't going to lie.
14:51I don't even feel like I had a great practice this whole camp, which is pretty good, I feel
14:57like, in my eyes, because now I have more room to grow in the realm that I'm in, in
15:03year seven.
15:03You told us a couple years ago that Inside the NBA was one of your favorite shows.
15:08You said that you could do the sports debate show.
15:12You said, yeah, I could be on top of that.
15:13But, so, if you were walking into a sports broadcast and they're like, CD, all right,
15:17you think the Cowboys are contending this year?
15:18We need 60 seconds for me to die.
15:20Oh, no.
15:21I feel like it's very biased.
15:23What's your argument going to be?
15:24What are you going to say?
15:24All right, I'm working my argument for why Dallas is ready to contend this year.
15:29Okay, so, for one, I want to say for five of the seven years that I've been in the league,
15:33we've been having a top three offense, right?
15:35Let's go there.
15:35We can start with the offense and then we'll go to the defense.
15:38We can start with the offense.
15:39You go look at every playmaker, we have a top five in every single.
15:42Last year, we had a top five in pretty much every category.
15:44We had two pro bowlers on offense on the O-line.
15:48We had a tight end that went to the pro bowl, a QB that went to the pro bowl,
15:51two receivers that went to the pro bowl.
15:53Our running back went 1,100 last year.
15:55Our tight end is very phenomenal, right?
15:56O-line, as a group, very young.
16:00They're meshing together.
16:01So, now, the problem that we had last year, right,
16:04I want to say that we had the number 32nd, right, defense.
16:07Okay, you go at the number one D tackle, right, and Quentin Williams.
16:11Then you pair him up with a duo so they can't triple
16:13and put all the focus on him.
16:15Then you got Kenny Clark, right?
16:16Then we go from Kenny Clark, then we go get Rashawn.
16:21And then we draft another guy in Malachi Lawrence,
16:23and then we still have Donald.
16:24So, we have a plethora of guys, right?
16:26And then our backers, we got to keep Demo healthy.
16:29I feel like Demo is healthy.
16:31He's one of the best backers in the sideline to sideline.
16:33There's not many people playing with him.
16:34But D Winters just came off 100 tackles last year
16:37because of Fred Warner went down, right?
16:41And then our DBs is being coached by our defensive coordinator
16:44who does a great job.
16:44I feel like in the past couple years that he had with Philly,
16:49he's the main reason for their success.
16:51For one, guys are playing comfortable.
16:53Guys are good in their own skin.
16:54And I feel like he's doing a great job of transferring that.
16:56Over here, he's getting the guys comfortable.
16:58You can see he's playing to their strengths,
16:59and he's giving them the help that they need.
17:01Then you go drop the guy like Caleb Downs.
