00:01When Australians walk into a supermarket
00:04they should have the confidence of knowing that the claims on the shelf
00:07are true. That means if they're paying a premium for a product
00:11that's made in Australia or made according to certain conditions
00:16then they should be confident that those claims are accurate.
00:20Over the last couple of weeks we've seen some concerning allegations aired on
00:24Four Corners suggesting that some of the products in Australia's supermarkets
00:28are not being accurately represented. I'm pleased today that
00:32the ACCC has announced that it will begin an investigation into those
00:36allegations. The ACCC is an effective
00:40enforcer which has been given additional resources
00:44by the Albanese government. No Australian government has been
00:48more passionate about improving the quality of our consumer laws.
00:52We've increased penalties for anti-consumer conduct.
00:56We've banned unfair trading practices. We've taken action
01:00against shrinkflation and we've cracked down on supermarket
01:04price gouging. With the ACCC's action it continues
01:09a range of actions that the ACCC has taken
01:12against misleading statements around food in recent years.
01:17That's included actions in which the ACCC has managed
01:20to secure infringement notices or penalties against misleading statements
01:25to do with the country of origin of fish,
01:28the country of origin of lobster,
01:30whether milk was fresh
01:33and also
01:34whether eggs were free range.
01:37The ACCC
01:38has shown a strong willingness to enforce
01:41Australia's consumer laws
01:42in the interest of Australian consumers.
01:46Australians shouldn't be duped by misleading labels.
01:49Australians should be able to walk into a store
01:51and know that what it says on the tin is accurate.
01:55I commend the ACCC
01:57in taking this important
01:59investigatory action.
