00:00I don't know what I'm getting.
00:01I asked her for a complete transformation,
00:03and I'm really excited to get started.
00:05But honestly, I trust her completely, and I cannot wait.
00:09Hi, everyone.
00:10I am Rissa, and today I'm getting
00:11a surprise hair transformation.
00:12Today I'm getting my hair done by my childhood hairdresser.
00:16I started going to Karis when I was around 17, 18 years old,
00:20and I have been loyal to a fault.
00:22I've not lived in Atlanta for the past 10 years,
00:25and I come here on holidays and down
00:27to get my hair done by Karis.
00:29She's amazing, but over the last two years of quarantine,
00:32I have had my friends giving me haircuts,
00:34and it has been with my kitchen shears in my bathroom.
00:38And although my hair is resilient, thank you, hair,
00:41it needs some love.
00:42I think that a Black woman's relationship
00:43with their hairdresser is sacred,
00:46and I'm so excited to see what she does today.
00:48I think I'm most excited to walk out of the salon today
00:51looking like a different person.
00:52I think as I enter my Saturn returns,
00:55I'm ready to make these big changes,
00:58and, you know, a girl who is going to change your hair
01:00is going to change her life,
01:01and that's what I'm ready to do.
01:03Hi, my name is Karis.
01:05I'm a colorist, and I'm the owner of the Collective Salon Atlanta.
01:09So most of my clients come to me as a natural specialist.
01:13I specialize in curly hair and making sure that people can get the color
01:17that they want while maintaining their curl pattern.
01:20I'm best known for blondes, but I also love doing reds and coppers,
01:24and definitely some fun brunettes.
01:26So today I'm going to do a fall transformation on Rissa.
01:30I'm super excited to give her some sultry hair color.
01:33I'm definitely going to give her some face framing layers
01:36just to open her face up,
01:37and then we're going to focus on keeping her really sexy for L.A.
01:42Let's get started.
01:43So the first thing we're going to do with Rissa
01:45is part her off into three sections.
01:49We are going to start in the back quadrant.
01:51That is where the hair is usually the darkest,
01:54so we're going to start in the back.
01:57We are going to mix up our lightener.
01:59We are using a clay lightener in 20 volume developer.
02:03We are going to mix it with a comb,
02:05and I love this tip because I feel like the comb
02:08actually breaks down the powder a little bit more.
02:11And we're also going to add in Olaplex
02:12for some extra strength and conditioning.
02:15We're going to begin by placing the lightener
02:17in the middle of the hair and softly feathering it up.
02:21It's just going to give her a really soft grow out
02:23and more of a natural sun-kissed look.
02:26Every single area that I do,
02:28I'm going to cover them with a mesh strip.
02:30A mesh strip is similar to foil.
02:32It just separates each section.
02:35But I like using mesh because mesh doesn't conduct heat.
02:38It's a great way to keep curly hair curly,
02:41to keep the pattern in place,
02:43and to be able to watch it as you move throughout the head.
02:47So total time, it takes about 45 minutes
02:49for us to process her hair.
02:51So now we're going to go to the shampoo bowl,
02:53and we're going to start rinsing her hair out in sections.
02:56We're going to start in the back section,
02:57and then we're going to work to the front
02:59once all the tone across the head is the same.
03:03So once we rinse, we're going to do a light shampoo
03:05to make sure all the lighteners out of her hair.
03:08And then we're going to go in with our Olaplex conditioner,
03:11and we're going to saturate her hair with that
03:14and let it sit for five to 10 minutes.
03:17Next, we're going to rinse out our Olaplex.
03:20I am going to apply a small amount of detangler to her hair,
03:24and then we're going to get ready to do our final step,
03:27which is the glaze and tone process.
03:30First, I'm going to mix a darker color for her face area
03:35and her mid-length.
03:36So even though this color looks really red and bright in the bowl,
03:40it's not going to develop that way.
03:42So I am going to apply this color to her base
03:45all the way down through her mids using a bowling brush.
03:48And I'm going to take a comb and just slightly blend
03:52the color down through her hands.
03:55Now I'm going to mix a second tone.
03:56This tone is much lighter, and this is going to go from her mids
04:00to the very end of her hair.
04:01This time, I'm using an application bottle.
04:04It makes it a lot quicker and it's easier to apply.
04:10Next, we're going to go back to the bowl.
04:11We're going to do a light shampoo.
04:13We want to do a light shampoo because we want our toner to last.
04:16And after that, we're going to do a conditioner.
04:20After we finish our shampoo and conditioning,
04:22we're coming back to the chair and we're going to get Risa blow-dried.
04:26Risa has a ton of hair, which takes a ton of time to blow-dry.
04:30But I like doing a full, fluffy blow-dry on her hair.
04:33It keeps her hair from looking too flat,
04:35and it's definitely going to make sure her hair doesn't go oily quickly.
04:39So today, we're doing straight on Risa.
04:42Of course, her hair looks great curly,
04:44but she wanted to have a full glam moment.
04:47And we're going to give her some sexy, tousled curls.
04:51Risa asked for me to take off about four inches of her hair.
04:54And so I'm going to go in.
04:56I'm probably going to take more like three inches just to bring up the length,
04:59but not to remove too much of the color that we just placed.
05:04Now we're going to go in with our barrel curling iron.
05:08This is an inch and a half.
05:11So now that we're done curling, I'm actually going to apply a serum to her hair.
05:16The serum is very light, but it just lays down any flyways,
05:19and it blocks the humidity because we're in hot Georgia.
05:24Last, we're going to do a little bit of a holding spray,
05:27and that's just to keep her curls intact and make sure she has some longevity.
05:36Karis, this is so amazing.
05:39I knew it would be amazing because it's you,
05:41but I didn't know that it would be this, this.
05:45Wow, the dimension, the color.
05:48It's so soft and so beautiful.
05:55So I chose this pretty caramel blend for Rista because I thought it went well with her skin tone,
06:02her big brown eyes, and I thought that it would look great just for her L.A. life.
06:09She's living a new L.A. life, and I wanted to do something to just bring her up.
06:13I do feel sexy.
06:14So sexy.
06:16You're so sexy.
06:19If you're saying that, even if you don't believe it, but wow.
06:23So you don't have to do a whole lot.
06:25You can let it grow out over the next year,
06:28or you can come back and get it retouched and move back up,
06:31but either way, it's going to look great.
06:33Karis, this is absolutely fantastic.
06:35Thank you so much.
06:36You are so welcome.
06:37I'm glad you love it.
06:38Thanks.
