00:00can't believe it believe it or not sports radio 610 presents the strange the bizarre
00:11the unexpected the drive with sterner and hubley believe it or not
00:22all right believe it or not we've been doing this leading up to training camp a couple of
00:29weeks away as the uh this thing gets uh locked and loaded for the texans 2026 season believe it or
00:38not do you believe this or not texans new quarterback coach jerry slipinski uh speaks about cj stroud
00:48and um him picking up everything him picking up to pick up things year two here's jerry talking
00:56about his young quarterback uh really good uh spring so far i would say the first thing starts
01:01with him coming back in pretty good shape um he looks good um he thinned out a little bit he
01:06looks
01:06good he's always you know been throwing the ball really well his footwork's been really good all
01:10the mechanical stuff but then i would just say his grasp of everything uh he's operating a lot faster
01:15you could see it at the line and what he's doing uh the way he's able to move guys around
01:20re-id
01:20protections you can just see him feel way more comfortable i feel like he's owning everything
01:24we're doing all right owning everything they're doing i know obviously he's he's thinned out and
01:30everything that's nice but believe it or not 713-572-416 youtube and twitch you believe he's
01:37picking up everything you feel and believe what the quarterback coach is saying that he's got a grasp
01:44and a control of this offense in year two i do i do i look i think cj stroud picking
01:49everything up i
01:50don't think cj stroud has ever had a processing problem i i think uh by the way i love the
01:57thinned
01:58out i love the throwing it well i love the footwork as i've mentioned before saplinsky talking about
02:02that don't touch him with any of that and quit talking about straight line speed just just just
02:07lean yourself up get that baby fat out the way and uh and be ready uh to rock and roll
02:13the processing
02:14piece i don't think cj's ever had a processing problem as as you hear a lot of people talk about
02:21yeah i don't think that's ever been a a problem with cj i don't i don't think there's there's a
02:26problem with cj um you know not picking up this offense i don't think this difficult offense to
02:34pick up uh now i do believe that there's been a communication piece that's a problem whether
02:40that's him or the oc or the center that they've all got to figure out when you say communication
02:45piece what do you what do you well i mean whoever's going to take command at the line of scrimmage
02:49with this offense uh you know they they whoever's going to take command of this offense uh needs to
02:56do so they've struggled with that and and then you know there's a piece of that of of what
03:04what uh uh abilities or or what what freedoms does cj stroud actually have at the line of scrimmage
03:12right um those are all i think deeper um conversations that frankly aren't aren't made
03:19for radio and most folks out there won't understand but i i i'm completely aware of of the
03:25communication piece that is that is caused it's been that's been chaos the line of scrimmage a lot
03:30of times right um you know that you hear him talk about getting in and out of the huddle you
03:35hear him
03:35talk about at the line of scrimmage that the play clock running down hell we heard domiko ryan's talk
03:39about last year they were just trying to get a playoff and they're you know before the play clock
03:43expired like all of that stuff has to be worked out i don't think that is a cj can't do
03:48things
03:49you know can't process or can't pick up an offense i i believe that uh i believe it that that
03:55what
03:56what chaplinsky's talking about um now we'll see if he is a fit or not to what nick cayley wants
04:05to do
04:05but i believe that this offense and is is a quarterback friendly offense i believe this
04:12offense is difficult to to pick up uh from the quarterback perspective and uh i think cj will just
04:20be fine i think it'd be just fine from that so i believe that one yeah i believe it too
04:24uh contrary
04:25to some people i don't believe um that cj is a low q low iq football player i don't think
04:35he's
04:35dumb um i i don't think that by any means is and i think year two in a system it's
04:43just you're
04:44going to pick it up more you're going to you're going to own it and feel more comfortable about it
04:49and i do think uh it appears at least for him his mindset has somewhat i somewhat changed
04:59in being more receptive to picking up everything with the offense because it does seem like from
05:08what we're hearing there is collaboration on getting his input on things so yeah i i i agree
05:14i believe that yeah he is picking things up just because he's a smart football player and it's going
05:21to happen over over over a second look cj is a smart football player cj is going to pick this
05:27offense up now that doesn't mean that cj is not going to break the huddle and go to the line
05:31of
05:31scrimmage and the defense is going to do everything they can to confuse the quarterback and confuse the
05:37protection and confuse the offensive coordinator but that's that's that's part of of you know
05:44schematically the offensive coordinator has to help him with that right schematically the center has to
05:50help him with that there's there's also have to have to minimize the times that you stand at the
05:57line of scrimmage and try to get the perfect protection right sometimes you it's it's it's good to
06:03snap the football and have answers right yeah the problem with this system is they try to have all the
06:11answers before the ball is ever snapped they try to figure out the puzzle before the ball is ever snapped
06:17so it results in snapping the football when you're up against the play clock snapping the football in a
06:24rush not moving guys around and not dictating offense the way that you know some teams do if you
06:31don't if you're a stagnant offense which this one's going to going to do it's it's simple to to to
06:36pick up
06:37the offense right if you're not an offense that has that that has to that has to include all the
06:44the shifts and the movements before you ever snap the football it cuts down the verbiage significantly
06:50now i'm not saying that that their verbiage is is minimal i'm not saying that at all but the the
06:55reality of it is is they're asking their quarterback to sit back there and figure everything out before
07:00you ever snap the football instead of snapping the football and reacting right that's not learning
07:05the offense that's that's being handcuffed by the offense if you will and so that's not a a picking
07:13up the offense problem in my opinion so i think cj i believe that cj is is is going to
07:18pick this
07:19offense up just fine i do too all right believe it or not believe it or not we've been hearing
07:24this
07:25in the offseason fellas caden mcdonald the the second round draft pick for or since a missing piece
07:35to this defense believe it or not well i i uh i don't believe it um i wonder if we're
07:42in the same
07:42space well i i just don't believe because i don't think there is a missing piece to be honest with
07:46you
07:46i don't believe it because not yet well look the reality of it is i need caden i need caden
07:54mcdonald
07:55to be the missing piece after the season's over i need caden mcdonald to be the one the the the
08:03two the the counter punch if you will the one two punch with will anderson when you can't afford to
08:08pay denil hunter anymore yeah that that that's what i need him to be now i don't know if he's
08:12just
08:12going to be a first and second down run stuffer or is he going to be a guy that can
08:16that can
08:17ultimately i would think a first round talent i know he went in the second round but a first round
08:21talent at the d-line position the expectations or at least the hopes are that he develops into
08:26one of the better d linemen in the league one of the better interior d linemen in the league now
08:30you
08:30do that and you become the robin to will anderson's batman and it's going to be less of a blow
08:38when
08:38denil hunter is no longer here when the texans can no longer afford to pay him that kind of money
08:43that's when i need caden mcdonald to be the quote unquote missing piece um i think this year this
08:48defense is already so good i just need him to be a rotational piece on that inside and anything
08:55beyond that i think is a luxury and and a blessing but no i like i i do not believe
09:00that caden mcdonald
09:01is is is the missing piece for this defense i don't know this defense really has a missing piece to
09:07be
09:07yeah i mean it's it's like the only area where you're like all right if they're if there's a
09:13weaker the last couple years it's the interior d line maybe that's where you can maybe try to run
09:19the football we saw tampa have success last year doing that um we've seen some teams have some
09:25success up the middle they don't have a lot of pass rush up the middle yeah so i think he
09:30could
09:31potentially be a guy that is uh a really good player there in the interior but i don't not yet
09:39that's generally the toughest spot i think he's more of a rotational uh solid player this year next
09:48year once he gets his foot foot there footing in there and understands the game then maybe the
09:54expectations rise
