00:00Happy 7-1-3 day, H-Town.
00:03Sports Radio 610 presents The Drive with Sterner and Hugh Gley.
00:13All right, one hour down as we are live here on The Drive.
00:20Paul Gallant is in today as Clint will be out today.
00:24If you're on YouTube, he's throwing up an awkward peace sign there.
00:29What was that awkward?
00:30The first time, the first one you did it, it was a little...
00:33We did a little effeminate lift.
00:34It was a little Richard Nixon kind of like...
00:38I'm not a crook.
00:40Peace sign.
00:41I'll try to set you up for that.
00:42We'll knock those pens down.
00:44But no, Paul is in with us.
00:46And as you can see, T-Mill is in there.
00:50Fresh off of Boots for Troops, man.
00:53Yes, sir.
00:54Shout out to the fine people over there.
00:55Another good year.
00:56I saw the photos of you.
00:58You were clean.
00:59You did have on Jordans with the suit, and that's fine.
01:03Yeah, the purple ones were pretty electric, I must admit.
01:07That's fine.
01:09Morrow's somewhere cussing.
01:11Luke Morrow hates it whenever guys wear some version of tennis shoes with a nice suit.
01:16Yeah, I'm kind of in that camp.
01:17You're not.
01:17You're not supposed to do that.
01:18I'm kind of in that camp.
01:20Well...
01:20I'm not in it as much as Luke is.
01:23Luke...
01:24I think Luke drinks when people do it.
01:27Like, he gets that mad.
01:28He just starts...
01:29Sounds like drinking.
01:30He's that upset.
01:31Yeah.
01:31I'm just...
01:32I'm not a fan of it.
01:33Sports on TV normalized it.
01:35I mean, now you got dudes wearing a hoodie underneath a...
01:39A blazer.
01:40Yeah, a blazer.
01:41What are we doing?
01:42On TV.
01:42Yeah.
01:43Yeah, I mean, I can understand the comfort.
01:46Like, your feet hurt a little bit.
01:47But now it's like a look.
01:49And just...
01:49I just...
01:50It can look better when the pants work with it.
01:55Mm-hmm.
01:56Sometimes them pants just don't be working with it.
01:59That's fair.
02:00I'm all, man.
02:00Vince, you just threw on some and ones.
02:04Mm-hmm.
02:05Vince Young is the one who looks really bad.
02:07I mean, not Young.
02:08I mean, Vince Carter is the one who looks really bad.
02:10Ah, okay.
02:11Okay.
02:11How about that?
02:12I didn't mean to take you out, Vince Young.
02:12What's Vince Young been doing recently?
02:15Trying to hear his name.
02:16Hey, man.
02:16Trying to stay up.
02:17Trying to stay up in these clubs.
02:19Doing better than Manziel post-college football.
02:21That's for sure.
02:22I don't know, man.
02:23Manziel's making some cash, man.
02:24Got these podcasts rolling.
02:26Oh, yeah.
02:26These celebrity fights.
02:28Yeah.
02:28These celebrity fights.
02:29Yeah.
02:30Good for him, man.
02:31You better win that fight.
02:32I'm a party boy.
02:33Did better than...
02:34Then Connor.
02:36All right.
02:37Executives, coaches, scouts.
02:40We've been doing the rankings all year.
02:42Spoiler alert, as we just talked about, believe it or not, the Texans offensive line, they did
02:48not have a soul in any of the offensive line rankings, and not just the top ten, but not a
02:55member
02:55of anyone in the honorable mentions for interior offensive linemen or tackles, not anyone in receiving
03:03votes.
03:03No one, not any of the five, I mean, I just, again, I just have, I don't mean to just
03:11derail
03:11this.
03:11I just have...
03:12No, I want you to.
03:13We are just...
03:14You did a great job derailing it earlier.
03:16We don't like that.
03:17Tyler, we're in year four, going into year four of the rookie deal where you haven't had to
03:25pay your quarterback yet.
03:26And there are about 25, 40 to 50 names that NFL execs, coaches, and scouts have all looked
03:40at offensive linemen who they think are generally the top 25 at those spots.
03:45And there is not a single Texan in it.
03:49And this is the point where you don't have to pay your quarterback.
03:52You can spend and you can...
03:54And they've...
03:55I mean, they've got...
03:56How many first or second round picks have they used on offensive linemen?
04:01How many guys in free agency...
04:03Boss, boss, boss.
04:04They don't have one.
04:07Yeah, but if you were looking at pro football focus at points last year, Ed Ingram was one
04:13of those guys, bro.
04:15Yeah, I know.
04:15Come on.
04:16I know Big Ed was.
04:17They're just disrespecting.
04:19I just like...
04:20NFL scouts, executive...
04:23Like, not one.
04:24And I'm not saying it's the end-all, be-all, and they're all...
04:27But not one?
04:28No.
04:29Go on it.
04:30No.
04:30I mean, not a single.
04:32Well, when you can't run the football at all, can you put a Texans offensive linemen?
04:37I'm not sitting here going to sit here and tell you that they have somebody that got
04:42screwed.
04:42You're lamenting that there's not one yet.
04:45Yeah, I get it.
04:46Like, if you have a promising quarterback and he showed you to be promising, like, you
04:53don't have one offensive lineman that executives...
04:57And I promise you, last year they didn't have one on there either.
05:01Well, what does it say that they moved on from the guy that was that for them, Laramie
05:06Tunsell?
05:06Actually, you know what I like?
05:07Titus was probably a honorable mention.
05:11He might have been.
05:12Or at least one of the top 25 names of people that got votes.
05:17But his superlative would have been most versatile, most correctly paid for the skills he brings
05:23to the table.
05:23Yeah, he wasn't that versatile.
05:24He was expensive.
05:26I just...
05:26Yeah, it's just...
05:27I just...
05:27It is just...
05:28Wow.
05:28Anyway, I didn't...
05:29And it just...
05:30It just blows me away.
05:31You look at that.
05:32Like, the rookie deal, man.
05:34Go look at Caleb.
05:35They just...
05:36I mean, Caleb, they win it.
05:37Just...
05:37Anyway, let me stop.
05:38Let me stop.
05:39All right.
05:40They ranked Stroud dead...
05:42I mean, if you want to look at it, he is the absolute last name on the list.
05:47And there are 20 names on the list.
05:50He is the absolute dead last...
05:52They think he's mid.
05:54...name on the list.
05:55And I will go through.
05:56They've got Josh Allen, one, Mahomes, and then Stafford, Burrow, Lamar, Dak,
06:05Justin Herbert, Drake May, Jarrett Goff, and Caleb Williams.
06:09That's the top 10.
06:10Honorable mentions.
06:11Sam Darnold, Jaden Daniels, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence,
06:17and Jalen Hurts.
06:18And then Knicks, Daniel Jones, and they snuck C.J. Stroud in right there.
06:24Your honest thoughts when you see these rankings where he sits.
06:29No matter if I think there are a couple of guys there that he should be above,
06:34what I saw against the Patriots and against the Steelers and at certain points in the
06:42last couple of games of the year, I want the punishments to keep coming.
06:46I want him to be constantly reminded of him coming up short.
06:51And I hope that that makes him stronger and helps him perhaps turn this entire thing around.
06:57But how can these rankings, for the sake of what?
07:04For the sake of stepping up for my guy?
07:06No.
07:07He was god-awful in that game.
07:10They could have won it if he was just marginal.
07:12And he was so damn bad.
07:14And he was bad against the Steelers.
07:15And he didn't think he played bad against the Steelers.
07:17He thought he played well against the Steelers.
07:19So to me, every single possible reminder that he can get of that last year wasn't acceptable enough,
07:25it needs to keep on happening over and over and over to Ron.
07:28At least to me.
07:29And there are a lot of guys I would take him over in this league.
07:33Is he the 20th best quarterback in the league?
07:35He's probably a little bit better than that.
07:37But at the same time, I'm very cool with this.
07:41I'm very fine with this.
07:43Yeah.
07:4620th on the list.
07:47Yeah, I disagree with it.
07:49But even moving past it, to me, I disagree with him.
07:53If he is 20th on this list, I will just say.
07:56Like, if he is around, I'll be honest with you, if he's around 15 to 20.
08:02Like, if he is in the, if he is in that little 15 to 20 range where Bo Nix and
08:09Daniel Jones and Hurts without A.J. Brown and all these players, Trevor Lawrence is outperforming him.
08:17Let me tell you something.
08:20The Texans don't have a shot at getting to a Super Bowl.
08:26If he's in that realm?
08:28If he's in that realm.
08:29No, and I will not, and I will not have to be jumping out in any planes.
08:33Hold on, Joe.
08:34They will, they will not have a shot.
08:37For this team to get, and that's why when I hear nonsense, like if Dave, if Davis Mills has to
08:44come in, and Mike Florio talking about, they've got to be honest with themselves and maybe have to talk about
08:50benching him.
08:51Again, I'm not going to do this to Davis.
08:54I like Davis.
08:55T-Mills gets it done.
08:57He seems to be starting a nice young family.
09:00Married his wife.
09:01They seem happy.
09:04I know he was 3-0, and I know we're going to ignore that Denver game that he played the
09:09majority of, that they lost.
09:11I know he was 3-0.
09:13I want you to just take a gander at his numbers.
09:16Just go and just take a gander at his numbers during those three.
09:19I'm not going to do it.
09:23I'm not going to tell you that his completion percentage didn't start with a six.
09:27I'm not going to do it.
09:30I think maybe the Jacksonville game was a moment, baby.
09:34It was a moment.
09:35It was a miracle.
09:36And it was huge.
09:37And he played his ass off.
09:38Right?
09:39That scramble.
09:41And he made a hell of a throw to Nico Collins against the Titans to get them in field goal
09:46range.
09:47They went scoreless against the Titans in that first half.
09:51Yeah, that was 13.
09:5213 to get it.
09:53Like, again, but I'm not going to.
09:56I'm just telling you right now, what the Texans are going to need is not just C.J. Stroud, as
10:04you just said in that game, to be marginal.
10:07They're not going to win anything big if he's just marginal.
10:12Paul, they need him to be the thing that uplifts everything around him.
10:20I don't think they have an above-average offensive coordinator and play caller right now.
10:24I don't think they have a creative – just based off what we've seen.
10:28I don't think they – if we did a list – I did this the other day.
10:31We did a list of OCs in the league.
10:33I don't think he would be top half.
10:35I don't think Nick Kaley would be.
10:38Clearly, we see their –
10:39It's cute too much.
10:40Clearly, their offensive line is not one that people believe in, as we're seeing.
10:4631st, 32nd.
10:47I mean, clearly, they don't have a single person that's even receiving a damn vote as a top player in
10:56the league.
10:57So the offensive line, you would think, is below average.
11:00Their skill positions – Barnwell did his skill positions deal of the best supporting cast around the court,
11:09if you take the quarterback out in the offensive line out.
11:12And they were 24th on that.
11:14That's below average.
11:16The thing that will potentially pull that together and make their offense be – even with this defense,
11:25like we – and I try to remind people, even with this great defense,
11:29the New England Patriots score 21 points themselves on full field drives.
11:36So even them – and this is a New England Patriots offense that's going to be better this year.
11:42You're going to have to score some points.
11:44They're going to – whatever combination of AFC – now, last year, they may be able to get away with
11:48it.
11:49Whatever combination of – they might have to go through Denver, Buffalo, Kansas City.
11:56They might have to go through Cincinnati, the Buffalo.
12:01There's a lot of arms.
12:01They might have to go through Baltimore.
12:02And they can't win all three of them.
12:06Maybe the defense is so good, they may get one of them.
12:09Hell, they may get two of them.
12:10But they're not going to win three games to get to a Super Bowl if C.J. Stroud isn't the
12:19one that's playing at a certain level
12:21that he makes up for having a potentially below average offensive coordinator,
12:27potentially below average offensive line, and potentially below average skill position.
12:31He's got to be the one that raises this.
12:33And if he doesn't, they're not going to be able to be a good enough offense to beat those teams.
12:38The inability to raise up everything around him is where – is why I'm where I'm at with him.
12:43Because I saw him do it his rookie season.
12:45I haven't seen it the last two years, and I don't know why.
12:49And to me, instead –
12:50Well, I think you can think of some reasons.
12:51I think you can look up and think of some reasons that involve him and other things.
12:56I mean, you can talk about the constant offensive line changes, the different offense, the offensive coordinators, everything.
13:03He's a part of some of this, too.
13:04That's what I mean.
13:05What gets frustrating for me, Ron, is not that I should listen to some of the fair excuses that are
13:11made.
13:12It's not that.
13:13It's more that they just are constantly made, and I'm like, yes, I get it.
13:16I get that all these things could be better.
13:18But I saw a guy his rookie year who lifts everything around him up, and then I haven't seen it
13:22since then.
13:23And to what you're saying, this is why it's different in the AFC versus in the NFC.
13:28Because a lot of people have been making the Sam Darnold comparison this offseason, right?
13:31Oh, well, Darnold did it.
13:32But, first off, Darnold's deep ball passing this past season was ungodly.
13:38It was so damn good.
13:40Well, Darnold wouldn't just ride in the passenger seat all the time.
13:44No, he wasn't.
13:45He wasn't.
13:46But I think that comparison's been made a couple times.
13:48And also, the other thing is, too, to what you were saying earlier, the NFC quarterbacks versus the AFC quarterbacks,
13:53it's not in debt.
13:54There's just way more good ones in the AFC than there are in the NFC.
13:57So, someone like Darnold doesn't necessarily need to get in a shootout in any of these games.
14:01And, by the way, the 49ers game was over, like, when it started.
14:04And the Rams game, yeah, that was a back and forth.
14:07Yeah, but when he had to, two times that year.
14:11Yeah.
14:11The last two games they played against the Rams, he had to.
14:15They did get help from that weird call, for sure.
14:18No, they got help from a weird call.
14:19But even with it, they put up 30.
14:20Yeah.
14:21They put up 30.
14:22He led them down the field.
14:24And this is a guy who had way more questions about him going into this season than this past season
14:30than Stroud had, at least until this year, you know?
14:34So, can he rise the level around him?
14:39I hope so.
14:40Well, I'm just telling you that for this, if you look at their offense and their team, I'm not even
14:49haggling anymore about where he is ranked, whatever.
14:52If you think that he's the 20th best quarterback, you know, that's, I mean, that's, we just disagree.
14:57But what they're going to have to have moving forward is you look at that offense and you look at
15:04this, and we're not just looking at this from the standpoint, Paul and Tyler, of can they get into the
15:11playoffs?
15:12We're beyond that, right?
15:14We're looking at this for them to break past this damn spot that they've never been able to break past.
15:22It's not, you're not going to ride this defense, and they're not going to shut down these combination of teams
15:28like this.
15:29You're not going to get it.
15:30I mean, this is, Drake may get a dream scenario.
15:34Right?
15:35Yeah, he didn't play well most of the playoffs.
15:37The most difficult quarterback, especially including to this list, was the first one he faced, was Justin Herbert.
15:44He got to roll through Jarrett Stenum in a snow globe.
15:47He got to roll through a C.J. Stroud, who was without weapons, who was shaky.
15:54All right?
15:54And he got Sam Darnold in the playoffs.
15:58That's not normal.
