00:02on this episode of open homes Dave is in Melbourne to see this opulent family home
00:09this dreamy island home a modern home that is thought of everything and at the end of
00:17the episode Roshan is in Sydney to see just how much detail goes into creating a cohesive grand
00:23home the exterior of the home already had this sort of moodiness and darkness to it and we
00:28wanted to reflect that on the interior come with us as we step inside first up Dave is in Melbourne
00:38to see a luxury family home that emanates style today we're in Roval to catch up with Lawrence
00:46from Metricon and he's going to show me through a popular mid-century design
01:07Lawrence thanks for having me
01:08here on this beautiful Metricon display home I'm gonna say what have we got here mate yeah so what
01:13we've got here Dave is our Hampshire 50 50 meaning it's 50 squares and this one packs a punch so
01:19essentially this home fits on a compact 14 by 32 block got everything that everyone wants five
01:24bedrooms five bathrooms three living double car garage open plan living which is where we are at
01:30the moment with an outdoor room got this massive kitchen here talk to us about the finishes because
01:38I just love the paneling love the kitchen loving everything I'm saying at the moment yeah so the
01:42color tone of the styling here is Metricon's take on mid-century so we've got masculine colors here
01:48we've got warm cabinetry and it works really really well with the earthy light grey tiling so the
01:53feature tiles here are a larger set textured and a neutral tone it works very very well with multi
02:00different designs I would say one of the best features are these beautiful big formatted tiles
02:05here I think they are six by twelve they are so they're a Beaumont Tundra light grey tile one of
02:10our suppliers that pretty much furnish all of our homes and they complement this display home
02:15magnificently they certainly do they've got this very luxurious feel here it's almost like a soft polish
02:20across the top of it and that's what you love in a tile Lawrence okay you've already filled we have
02:26enough downstairs what have we got upstairs well let's go but before we do that Dave I want to show
02:30you this amazing bathroom that we've got the front let's go and have a check it out
02:41Lawrence I love this bathroom talk to me about it so this bathroom quite a key feature for Metricon this
02:47is the ensuite to the guest bedroom and here we've got some amazing tile work I'll say I love these
02:54what
02:54are they yes so these tiles are a big feature here in this bathroom these are a skyline silver travertine
02:59gives the room a lot of texture and a lot of warmth and clients absolutely love it all right well
03:08we're
03:08still downstairs if this is what I'm saying downstairs I can't wait to see what we've got upstairs there's
03:12more upstairs let's go this is what you call a main bedroom definitely is it is an oversized main
03:29bedroom Dave with its own separate room for an en suite oversized bathroom and a very generous
03:34balcony here too just talking about a main bedroom en suite fireplace walk-in robe again I even love the
03:44couch it's pretty much everything that most people want there's not much more than anyone can get in
03:49here and it's also got a private secluded study nearby what else do we have upstairs so upstairs we've
03:55got everything that families want so this is where all the bedrooms are so we've got the guest bedroom
03:59downstairs we've got four bedrooms up here so with the main one that we're sitting in at the moment and
04:04you've got three bedrooms down there which all have en suites and walk-in robes now I'm going to ask
04:09you
04:09what's one of the well one of the items that stands out up here is it the layout or the
04:13floor plan or is it
04:14basically looking at these beautiful tiles here or the en suites what's the one thing that stands out for
04:18you oh for me and the clients I'm going to test the clients as well it's this main bedroom
04:22just where it's positioned how you've got this ginormous balcony and the walk-in robe it is a
04:29tick and a must for most families that do see it it's just something they can't let go off well
04:33Lawrence this house is absolutely stunning but we've got to go downstairs to talk about my domain and
04:37that's the backyard definitely let's go
04:49well Lawrence people say the kitchens are the heart of the house I'm going to say the backyard is and
04:53you've got everything out here yeah we would like to think we've got everything here to really give
04:58clients an idea what they could do with their backyard so for this display home we've really
05:02packed it with our door room that comes standard for the floor plan offset it to a water feature to
05:07give it a real nice tranquil feel but more importantly we've got an outdoor area which
05:12is offset with a fireplace to really give clients an idea what they could do with their indoor outdoor
05:18living this is what they say is the focal point here so when you're sitting in the room here got
05:23this beautiful water simmering at nighttime and you're seeing all these beautiful waves at night it's
05:28fantastic so that's one thing that I love the other thing's got to be the fireplace well Lawrence I
05:34definitely got to say this is house is absolutely stunning again the main bedrooms a massive feature
05:39I love the kitchen area I really do I love every bedroom has an ensuite I love the backyard and
05:45I've
05:45got to say if this is where Metricon is going can't wait to see what you got for me for
05:48next year
05:49definitely Dave we welcome you here anytime at Metricon this one being one of our designer homes
05:53which is coined affordable luxury we love the feedback we love that you love it well done no worries
05:58next up we're in Queensland Russell Island is southeast of Brisbane CBD and it's a quick trip on the
06:23passenger ferry from the Redland Bay marina and just a 20-minute trip and it's a beautiful trip over
06:34beautiful part of the out of Brisbane suburbs so obviously unique because it is an island and not
06:39many cities around Australia actually have four and a half thousand population bases on islands that use
06:46the islands as their home base and commute in and out to Brisbane as well so a bit unique in
06:51that sense
06:54what you see behind us is the Bay Islanders a build done by coa constructions using the mod packs build
07:03system so unlike conventional build a lot of our product is actually pre-produced in factories so we
07:13can ship here there and everywhere wherever suits and that means that when the product comes to site
07:18instead of traditional build where you know timber goes trusses go our product comes in we have
07:26pre-manufactured wall panels that go together they get assembled they're already pre-lined internal and
07:32external they then incorporate other products such as bond or solar span as well because system-built
07:38roofs go with system-built houses as well using wall products
07:45working with coa construction to come up with the design we wanted to make sure that we could create
07:50a a family home but not have too much impact on site with design we do need to consider on
07:56these
07:56Bay Islands is the wastewater management system because it's an unsewed site so on this property
08:01there was a lot of area that needed to be taken so this is why we opted for the two
08:05-story version
08:06so keeping the living areas at the lower level and having a master bedroom and ensuite alongside
08:13that as well and then we've got two bedrooms upstairs but probably one of the key benefits is the speed
08:24of
08:24the construction process because you get components that come that are already prefabricated to the
08:31detailed plan it means that essentially you're in component housing assembly systems so that means
08:38that unlike traditional build where you're basically putting individual items and widgets together being
08:46stud frames then gyproc and whatnot those processes are already done back in our factory and so the
08:52assembly part that means that lock up can be achieved in upwards 40 to 50 percent quicker so this product
09:00as an example will achieve lock up within three weeks for the roofing systems we use bond or solar
09:07span on this particular build here and that could depend on what the client wants it could be even
09:13bond or insole roof depending on what the look and feel is of the build so you've got that flexibility
09:18that roof systems like bond or produce that we can use because it makes sense because you're dealing
09:24with a finished product it improves that speed of completion finished products pre-painted steel
09:31coverings and the insulation and r-value product is fantastic along with longer spans as well so the
09:38design flexibility that that gives us with our building is fantastic that's why we use those products from
09:44bondor
09:46when we came to looking at the design elements for the outside of the house we wanted to go with
09:52something a little bit more modern and using the features of the the bond or roofing and keeping
09:59those nice clean lines but still giving a little bit of a you know boxy modern kind of effect with
10:04using
10:04the panels and creating a parapeted style roof on the outside coming from the corner of the lot we wanted
10:10a bit of an impact as people drove down two different streets to be able to go wow what is
10:15that and to see the impact of that second story above that lower level living area as well
10:20so what you see when you enter we have 2.7 ceilings so with the mod packs panels we have
10:26the options for a 2.4 panel or a 2.7 panel so on the lower level we stuck with
10:30the 2.7 with that it
10:33comes with 2.7 openings for your doors and windows as well so it gives that real elevated feeling when
10:38you're walking into the space because mod packs is a panelized system we come in components so
10:45rather than being factory built crane to site we're able to squeeze down the side of you know
10:51particularly small lot homes the project that we've completed last year down at chugan it had a very
10:56narrow access but everything was easily being able to to taken down the back i have a saying that you
11:02could walk a panel through your front door at your back door and start building what you need in the
11:06back
11:07so one of the biggest pushes that we are trying to bring to the building industry is the adoption
11:12of modern methods of construction and this particular build as you see behind us is a perfect example
11:18of using component housing assembly systems to produce this so again we can use different levels
11:25of skills so we actually can train people bring them up through a building program upskilling them
11:31training them and how to produce a finished house as opposed to people being locked in
11:36four years apprenticeships and that skill set just isn't in there anymore we're losing that so we want
11:42to make it accessible and available to everyone and really close that gap with our housing numbers
11:51next up we get a tour of this stunning home and later rosh is in sydney
12:05next up james is in the burbs to see a brilliant display of family living
12:11it is a beautiful sunny day here in the southwest of sydney we're actually here in menangal park
12:17to check out that beautiful home right behind me it definitely looks striking from the outside
12:22but join me now as we take a walk through this very stylish home
12:38aaron it's great to be here mate i've got to say i've actually watched this project come together
12:42because i've been driving out this way at first the size of it i thought is it a reception hall
12:47is
12:47it a large ski resort like it's a really large home tell us about this amazing project we're at this
12:53big
12:53uh block in menangal park uh it's just under a thousand square meters we want to showcase
12:58what you could do um for an acreage sort of property but on a smaller footprint and with a
13:04fair bit of slope so yeah it's got five meters of fall on it this really five meters so yeah
13:09we wanted
13:10to put some splits in the home have a sort of tiered backyard put a pool in and make it
13:15look real
13:15special what a great entrance this beautiful floor it's got lots of texture it looks like it's sort
13:20made from old brick but it's a natural stone yeah and i can just peep inside and see that we're
13:24going
13:24to see more of that yeah i can't wait to go in mate let's go
13:40i love when i walk into a house that i don't quite know where to go i look to the
13:44left and i see a
13:45cellar it was calling my name i look to the right there's a home theater but we had to come
13:49upstairs that
13:49entry for you is amazing it is it's huge yeah it's beautiful stone cladding on that wall behind
13:55the staircase and i actually thought it was steel on the stringer but it's a painted timber stringer
13:59you're repeating the black element in a really clever way yeah absolutely we um we have a few
14:04curved elements so doing that in steel would have been a little bit tricky so we were able to do
14:07the curves in the timber which was good got three large bedrooms on this side and i like that they're
14:12separated again that's that future proofing idea um and then that master bedroom like crikey yeah it's a
14:18high-end see that's the high-end hotel room in the ski resort that i'm looking for it's a huge
14:23room
14:24it's got the curves but that combined ensuite walk-in robe like it's a blowout mate oh for sure
14:30and the that room actually faces south and you'll be surprised how much natural light's in there so
14:39this landing up here is beautifully connected but still separated like it's important for a family
14:44but that beautiful balcony looking down like into the rest of the home you know dinner's ready or
14:49just keeping an eye or being still part of the family when they're separated yeah it has a really
14:53good separation but also it is like you said connected to the um the living areas downstairs
15:03the kitchen is beautiful it's got that soft tone that you've sort of mixed almost like you've mixed all
15:07those tiles together to get the color um and it just it sits really well in the space but so
15:13much
15:13bench space man yeah there's loads of bench place loads of storage and it all leads out into the outdoor
15:19area and those windows all stack back the shears you can push the shears back and then get this real
15:24good connection between inside and outside the thing i want to talk about aaron with such a large home you
15:30have to operate this house but the little details are so important you've got the soft lighting from above
15:35but you have to have the sexiest light switches and power points and i know this um product it's
15:41it's pretty new to market but it's very good looking we decided to go with the eclipsal solace t range
15:46for the power points and the light switches and that's the the color we went with is ebony aluminium
15:53so for this house we had full scope on clips of design service which included the lighting
15:58the switches the sockets smoke alarms and exhaust fans so we chose the platinum aluminium for this home
16:05due to the color palette of and design in the home and it was the best choice we felt to
16:11complement
16:11everything within the house so in this house we've chosen the non-glare down lights which give a very
16:16nice ambient light uh when at night time and it's not too bright the low level on there means it's
16:23not
16:23glary in your eyes which is a really good choice in a house like this that doesn't compete with the
16:29beautiful pendants that are around here seeing this house all finished together complemented with the
16:34solace tea the choices that we've made the choices that better build homes have trust us to make
16:39especially in electrical has really brought this house to a high level
16:48and as far as the entertaining space massive alfresco everyone's here for christmas day or
16:53tuesday nights um and you've got a really large pool which again you've elevated because of the the slope of
16:59the block that you talked about yeah definitely so i think we have about a 1.2 meter step up
17:03to the
17:04pool area and then there's another pretty much another 1.2 meter step on the other end of the
17:08pool which sort of just showcases what we can do with a block of land that has a lot of
17:12fall on it
17:12it's got a lot of striking features but it also feels like a home
17:19next up we can finally reveal this outstanding designer home in new south wales
17:33finally we can show off this incredible home in sydney where detail is king
17:44daren this facade is an incredible statement i have to ask you i know you're an interior designer
17:50do you have anything to do with this no we didn't have anything to do with this at all except
17:54for
17:54try to bring this into the inside so one of the key philosophies of our studio is people in place
18:00so
18:01what we try to do with every home is make the exterior and the interior work together so to bring
18:05that cohesion you know the clients like coming home so why not make this feel the same on the inside
18:10well i have a feeling i'm not going to want to leave by the end of today so i think
18:14you're going
18:14to be happy please give me a tour let's go
18:37thank you darren you weren't wrong walking into the home my first impressions are literally blown
18:42away absolutely incredible space certainly incredible bones to work with thank you can
18:48you tell me through the journey of the last six to seven years yeah sure so six years ago i
18:53received a
18:53text message one sunday morning from tony asked if we did wine cellars and the rest is really history so
18:59we sort of started downstairs in the wine cellar we moved into this area that we see now which is
19:05sort of
19:06the public space of the property so we've done the kitchen the little intimate bar area the dining
19:11area tony study the entry foyer and looking at the kitchen itself i mean you've really looked at a
19:17change of color to almost alter you know the space of the of this area can you talk me through
19:23the process
19:24in terms of the marble view yes and the color choices so what we really wanted to do with this
19:28kitchen was grounded in the home the exterior of the home already had this sort of moodiness and
19:33darkness to it and we wanted to reflect that on the interior because the original interior had no
19:37no reflection to that so the stone here is sort of picking up on the slate on the outside and
19:42we're
19:42bringing those gray tones together the sports bar yes absolutely insane it's awesome isn't it i mean
19:48they have three tvs is incredible but the way the liquor just pops up yeah tell me more about your
19:54relationship with the owner and how important was that to him when we designed the wine cellar
19:58we had a little area for um for whiskey now that area was never big enough and what happened when
20:05we moved into here and we did downstairs there wasn't a great deal of space for liquor tony likes
20:10a good gadget and you know we all being blokes we like something that's a bit of a wow factor
20:15so we created this five and a half meter long whiskey pop-up bar with the touch of a button
20:20it all pops up out of the bench top and it's a bit of a wow factor
20:28darren a thing that does strike me when i see all the technology the bar the wine cellar all this
20:33beautiful lighting and all the little pop-up open doors it's absolutely incredible yeah the energy bills
20:38must be horrific i know that guys have considered that they have installed a large solar power system
20:43this and a huge battery stack yes my question to you as an interior designer how do you feel about
20:49the
20:49aesthetics of the anchor solix battery system look i love it it's in the garage and the door closes
20:54and away it goes but look as far as batteries go it is a really good looking battery system they've
20:58done an incredible job of they've certainly picked one of the best battery brands in the world and
21:03aesthetically it's one of the only ones that is not white so it really does complement the dark and
21:09it's good and sitting next to what it's sitting next to it looks great well you can't go wrong with
21:19garage when tony first came to us the first thing that we do is we do an energy audit of
21:23his bills
21:24and what his consumption looks like and then we have to design up a system so for a home like
21:28this
21:28it was really important that we got a system like anchor where we can have big big battery capacity to
21:34match the consumption for the property this battery system is actually the largest anchor system in the
21:38southern hemisphere with a total of 60 kilowatt hours we had a 40 kilowatt solar system on the roof so
21:43given the size of the solar system the consumption for the property it was only fitting that we put
21:47on a battery system as big as this we love anchor for a couple different reasons so first is their
21:52their technology they've got multiple different products within their range the the new gateway you
21:57can see here ev charger and the batteries themselves for us being a coastal based company having a
22:02product that has a c5 marine rating to protect us against the corrosion from the sold air is really important
22:08the power bills here originally around 8 000 before the solar went on we've got a huge reduction
22:12there when they came down to eight to three thousand but three thousand dollars a quarter is still a
22:16massive bill so now with the new battery stack here we're going to get those eight thousand dollar
22:20bills or what were all the way close to very zero
22:33there when i thought i couldn't be entertained enough i walk into the outside and the entertainment
22:39area is to die for can you tell me what you've done out here because it looks beautiful um with
22:44a little
22:44bit of involvement here we've redone the barbecue area so again it was white and
22:50a bit on the plain side so we've you know done some new splashbacks redone all of the timber
22:55fixed the barbecue at the bottom and just added the the timber slats at the top again to tie back
23:00to the front of the house just to sort of make it all feel like it was always meant to
23:04be here well i
23:05know that you're not finished yet and i know there's you've done the first two levels yes now
23:10you've got the upstairs to work on so what's next uh we've just handed over the design for the private
23:15areas which is the master suite main uh bathroom and the kids bedrooms that'll kick off in about
23:21eight weeks time um so yeah watch this space it's going to be that that parents retreat is going to
23:26be
23:26quite special well darren i'm hoping we're going to get an invitation not just to stay here
23:30but also to watch the football but also to come and have a look at what you do in a
23:33few you know
23:34maybe in a year's time or so that's great but darren thank you so much for the tour today absolute
23:38pleasure the home is stunning cheers mate thanks for watching we hope you find some inspiration looking
23:46through these incredible homes and gardens we certainly have for more on the homes and behind
23:51the scenes check out our instagram and facebook see you next time for more open homes
24:00so
24:00you
