00:00Have you ever been playing the Witcher games and wondered, why exactly does Geralt have two swords?
00:06What's that about? Now, this may not be the most niche nugget of knowledge out there,
00:10but just in case you didn't know, here's why. Out of Geralt's signature twin blades,
00:15one is steel and the other is silver. As a Witcher, Geralt roams from town to town hunting
00:21monsters. It's his purpose, his profession. And in the Witcher universe, like in most fantasy
00:26and folktales, supernatural beings are deathly weak to silver. And while a more conventional blade
00:32may injure a werewolf or cockatrice, a blade of silver is far more effective. Silver can even
00:37damage phantoms and specters, which a normal blade wouldn't even touch. This is made evident in the
00:42games, books, and other media. But then, why doesn't Geralt just carry a silver sword? Why the
00:48additional steel? Well, this is even simpler. Silver as a metal is incredibly soft. It dulls
00:54easily and wouldn't last very long in a sword fight against a regular steel blade. Not to mention,
00:59as far as metals go, it's pretty precious. So constantly replacing a broken silver sword would
01:06devastate a Witcher's hard-earned cash from slaying beasts. And seeing as in the world of the Witcher,
01:11bandits are as common as banshees, enemy soldiers as common as Akimara, and thugs as common as fiends,
01:17it pays to have the steel as backup. So in short, one's for monsters, the other's for men. Both.
01:24Well, you know the quote.
