00:06The young environmentalist has invited local volunteers from Nigeria's capital
00:10Niameh to a small orchard. They are here to learn how to help young trees survive.
00:30A lot has already been achieved in Niger. Millions of trees are planted every year, especially
00:36on Independence Day in August when it becomes a nationwide effort. But two-thirds of these
00:42trees planted don't survive, because of neglect and the harsh desert climate.
00:49The capital Niameh also needs more trees. This time, people want to get reforestation
00:55right. Volunteer Jibo Harande Charifatou is doing her bit. More than 4,000 people have
01:01already joined the environmental initiative. But simply planting trees isn't enough. The
01:06supplants need people's commitment and care to survive.
01:25In the orchard, Suraya explains that removing weeds help young trees survive. Applying compost
01:32helps too. But pruning is especially important. It allows the tree to focus its energy on healthy
01:38shoots, grow more vigorously, and better withstand drought.
01:42They are superfluous. So, we use them to allow the trees to grow better. We put them on the
01:48soil. They will decompose them. They will be able to help them to grow the trees.
01:56More than 2,000 square kilometers of fertile land are lost every year in Niger. Deforestation
02:01is one of the main causes. That's why local action matters so much, says Suraya.
02:09It's not too late to correct the mistakes of the past.
02:11A small gesture today for us the ancients, but for the future generations will be a
02:16and share to you.
