00:00The lawsuit filed against Meta accuses the social media giant of contributing to the
00:05youth mental health crisis.
00:07It accuses Meta of knowingly and deliberately designing features that get children addicted
00:12to its social media apps.
00:14It is time that the public see what the executives at Meta have known all along, that their products
00:22are designed to addict and harm children.
00:26For years, we have been gaslit by safety feature updates that often end up buried, missing
00:35or broken altogether.
00:37And today we're here to say enough is enough and it's time for transparency and accountability.
00:45There is nothing inherently social about these platforms.

00:52It is a predator-enabling engagement farm.
00:57States are demanding upwards of $1 trillion in damages and key operational changes including
01:04parental verification for teenage users, changing dopamine-manipulating recommendation algorithms,
01:11removing appearance-altering photo filters, ending autoplay of video content, prohibiting
01:17multiple accounts, and ending disappearing or ephemeral posts.
01:23Meta, however, says it believes it has a strong case and released this statement.
01:29We are proud of our record in protecting teens on our platforms and the amount of effort that
01:34we've put into developing protections over the years, even before these cases were filed,
01:39and continuing to the present day.
01:41We look forward to showing the judge and the jury those facts in court.
01:46But many industry observers don't share Meta's optimism.
01:51It's a huge threat to the company.
01:54Some folks have been throwing around the word existential, and I think that's a fair word
02:00for this lawsuit.
02:02Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to take the stand in the next weeks.
02:07But the case is already being compared to landmark big tobacco lawsuits of the 1990s and the more
02:14recent opioids litigation.
