Plans for a large-scale battery storage facility at Uriarra station, west of Canberra city are causing concern in the local community. At 520 megawatts, the proposed system would be one of the largest in the region. Residents of 'Uriarra village' say they support the principle but haven't been told enough about the potential risks to the local area.

00:02Uriara Village at the foothills of the Brindabellas provides an escape from city life.
00:08But some residents are concerned that's about to change.
00:11I understand they want to put what is potentially one of the largest battery storage systems right into that rural
00:17landscape.
00:18The proposal is for a 520 megawatt battery to be built on part of historic Uriara Station.
00:25The massive facility will store electricity when demand is low and release it to the grid when it's needed.
00:31I'm all for battery solutions. I don't really have a concern with it being that close to the village. I
00:39do have a concern about noise.
00:40The proposed site is two kilometres from the village and will include the battery infrastructure, substation and transmission lines.
00:48I'm all for green energy, I'm all for battery storage, but it's the right facility in the wrong location.
00:54The project has been submitted for an environmental assessment. If approved, it'll be twice the size of the battery at
01:00Williamsdale to the south.
01:02We have to decarbonise the grid, right?
01:05Residents say a community information session in June left them with more questions than answers.
01:10When we asked how much noise impact this would have, they couldn't tell us. When we asked what the bushfire
01:15modelling looked like, they hadn't done it.
01:17But it's a charged topic in the community.
01:19I don't feel like communities should necessarily try and find every single possible reason to stand against this sort of
01:27infrastructure.
01:28Their legitimate concerns should be taken into account. So where it's plain nimbyism, I'm very much against that.
01:36Residents say it's not their backyard, but Canberra's backyard.
01:40They can't just look inside their little construction zone and say, no, there's no other impact because they're actually part
01:46of a landscape.
