00:01Former Johor Bahru MP, Sharir Samad, told the High Court that a money laundering charge against him severely damaged his
00:08reputation and caused distress to his family.
00:12Sharir, 75, testified that the accusation created an impression that he was dishonest, while his wife and late daughter also
00:20had to endure the pressure and embarrassment.
00:22He was giving evidence in his RM10 million suit against former Attorney General Tommy Thomas, former MACC Chief La FIFA
00:31Coya and the government for alleged malicious prosecution and misfeasance in public office.
00:37Sharir told the court he wanted his criminal trial completed quickly because his only daughter was battling stage 4 cancer
00:44and one hearing had to be rescheduled for her treatment.
00:47He was acquitted in January 2023 after prosecutors withdrew the charge, while his daughter, who was then under palliative care,
00:56died not long afterwards.
00:58Sharir also testified that RM200,000 in his bank account was frozen for more than three years from the year
01:052020, while a seized car was only returned in May 2023.
01:09He maintained that the lawsuit was not about revenge, but whether authorities had properly investigated the case before using their
01:17powers to investigate, seize property, arrest and prosecute.
01:22The case stemmed from a RM1 million cheque Sharir received from former Prime Minister Najib Razak for the rehabilitation of
01:29the Puri Lankasuka housing project in Johor.
01:32Sharir had been charged with failing to declare the RM1 million to the Inland Revenue Board, leading to the money
01:38laundering case that was later withdrawn.
01:40The trial before Justice Gan Techeong with Sharir, Thomas, Latifa, MACC and the government represented by their respective legal teams
01:49will resume on September 4th.
