00:01The bird flu has officially reached Tasmanian shores and it's been detected in a brown skewer carcass which was collected
00:09by Parks and Wildlife Services Tasmania overnight and has been confirmed this morning.
00:15Now the bird has been collected on the Burgess Cove which is at Rocky Cape National Park on the state's
00:22northwest coast.
00:24And what measures are going to be taken now to prevent any outbreak?
00:32Well the Tasmanian government says it's stepping up its surveillance.
00:36Things like deploying helicopters, planes and drones to monitor birds particularly in the northwest region but also areas like King
00:46Island and the Ferno Island as well.
00:49Now other things they're doing are truck wash facilities and also decontamination units to help minimise some of the risk
00:58of further spread.
00:59We heard from the Deputy Premier Guy Barnett earlier about some of the other measures their government is taking to
01:06help minimise risk of spread.
01:08We must be prepared for the risk of a mass mortality event.
01:15We have worked closely with the Federal Government to deliver protection plans for species considered most at risk.
01:22This includes the orange-bellied parrot, the Tasmanian devil, the shy albatross, the short-tailed shearwater, the ferno white-fronted
01:33tern, the fairy and little tern, Australian and long-nosed fur seal and the Australasian gannet.
01:39There is no way to prevent new strains of bird flu entering or spreading through Tasmania with mild and migratory
01:47birds.
01:48Little penguins are likely to be affected all around Tasmania.
01:53Now another one of the measures being implemented will be a vaccination program and it's targeting endangered and protected species
02:02in the state such as the orange-bellied parrot which 300 of the birds are currently in a captive breeding
02:09program.
02:10Now today's detection means the total number of cases of bird flu in wild birds in the country has now
02:17reached 152.
