WA's nursing union is calling for the state government to take action over issues within the nursing course at Notre Dame University in Fremantle. The university paused all new enrolments for 12 months in June, but current students say they are also being impacted due to a lack of practical placements.

00:14We're all very fed up and anything happens now we're just like yeah that's about right.
00:18The university recently paused new enrolments after admitting it had oversubscribed its Bachelor of Nursing.
00:25But multiple current students have told the ABC they're also being impacted.
00:31My first placement was cut short by two days. I was then short 16 hours and every attempt that I've
00:37made to make up those hours has been met with oh you can't, the facility won't allow it.
00:43WA's Peak Nursing Union predicts hundreds of students could be affected amid fears of a shortfall.
00:49There will be a shortage of about a thousand in 29-30.
00:54It's just going to impact the communities, it's going to impact WA public hospitals, it's going to impact private hospitals,

01:02A state government spokesperson denies frontline services will be impacted but concedes the disruption at Notre Dame is concerning.
01:11The spokesperson says WA Health is collaborating with TAIPS and universities to promote a sustainable pipeline of graduates.
01:20The ABC put questions to the University of Notre Dame about delayed graduations and ongoing placement issues but the university
01:29directed us to a statement published two months ago saying it had nothing further to add.
01:35The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency is now looking into the situation.
01:41While Madison is on track to graduate, she still worries about the future.
01:47It's very frustrating to see that mismatch of knowing that everywhere is short staffed and knowing that there's that desperation
01:55for nurses.
