01:30The numbers, as expected, just a little bit more than Bijan, but just a very little bit.
01:37He's the highest paid running back in the NFL based on average annual salary, 22.5.
01:42Wasn't Bijan 22.25?
01:45Yes.
01:46The deal is worth 51.5, and new guaranteed money can get up to 75.75.
01:53Bijan was up to 75, so it's literally $250,000 a year more and $250,000 a year at max
02:01over three years.
02:03The three-year timing is perfect because this is an extension, so two more years under his current deal, three
02:09more years after that.
02:10Takes him through what historically is the most productive years of running back careers, and the data suggests that he
02:17will probably have a bit too many carries and touches in terms of accumulated before a running back starts to
02:23show the wear and tear.
02:25But 29 is also an age that I saw it described in an ESPN study.
02:29They called it a cliff.
02:30Running backs drop off a cliff when they turn 29.
02:33Not everybody's built the same.
02:34There are exceptions.
02:36And he is exceptional.
02:38But if you look at the way running backs are getting extended, Bijan got extended through his year 28 when
02:43he's playing at 28 years old.
02:45Jonathan Taylor got extended through the year he will be 29 years old.
02:49And now Gibbs, through the year he'll be 28 years old.
02:52So there's kind of a standard operating procedure.
02:57Look, there are people out there that said they should let this play out.
03:00Two more years.
03:01He was under contract for two more years.
03:03And then you could guarantee keeping him for a third year by franchise tagging him if he was still productive.
03:09This is a common text and phone call we got when this whole story first started.
03:16And, I mean, I get it.
03:18From a financial standpoint, you're talking about strictly business.
03:22You're not overextending yourself.
03:25You're, he is under contract.
03:27You don't have to pay him anything more.
03:29Now, now he will get a signing bonus with this new deal that gets prorated over the course of the
03:34contract, takes up some cap space.
03:37But what the Lions just did, okay, what they just did is by no means unconventional.
03:44It's not unconventional at all.
03:45Teams do this all the time.
03:48Atlanta and Bijon, same draft class.
03:50Atlanta did it.
03:51Jalen Carter re-signed in Philly.
03:53He's in the same draft class.
03:55A lot of teams do this.
03:57Lions have done it with a ton of their players.
03:58So it's not a crazy move no one would do, but for people who were willing to not, that don't
04:06want him signed to this contract, what are the risks you are taking then?
04:11Well, first of all, he actually could hold out and you could understand why he would be mad.
04:18What's different about me than Hutch and Penny and Aminra and all the guys that you signed?
04:24What's different about me?
04:25Why, why are you doing this to me?
04:27So he could hold out and that could carry into the season.
04:31Sure, because then you're looked at as being expendable.
04:35And it's possible that he could be unhappy if he didn't hold out.
04:43And you're running the risk of a critical player who is now unhappy with the organization.
04:50And that's the kind of thing that I'm, you know, I think that's more reality than the average person realizes.
04:59You want your team all pulling in the same direction.
05:04You want your star players all giving everything they've got to win a championship.
05:08And you run the risk of losing a player if you don't resign him and, and give him what you've
05:14given all the other star players.
05:15And I mean, losing them mentally, losing their commitment.
05:18And people say, oh, yeah, he's a professional.
05:20He should do what he should.
05:20Yeah, he should.
05:21But he's also a human.
05:24And, you know, that's a very real risk.
05:27Yeah.
05:28But I mean, you have to also look at it this way.
05:30First round picks have five year contracts.
05:33They're four year deals with an option for a fifth year.
05:34And you have to decide if you're going to pick up your fifth year players that are productive for the
05:39first three years are going to a get that fifth year and to they're going to get extended.
05:46He has had an outstanding three years to the start of his career to the point where he has, uh,
05:545,000 yards, basically in total offense in three years to go with the 49 touchdowns in three years.
06:04That's a player.
06:05It's a no brainer.
06:06You extend.
06:08So anybody that says it's foolish to do it, I don't know how you can justify it's foolish to do
06:12based on what he has done already and what you expect him to do, because he is only, let me
06:18check my notes, 24 years old.
06:21He's an integral part of this offense.
06:24In fact, he's probably the most important piece to this offense.
06:28Um, perhaps our aside from maybe the quarterback, but if you look at weapons,
06:32I mean, I love I'm on our St.
06:34Brown, but Jameer Gibbs is more valuable because it's, he's running and receiving.
06:40And I mean, it's, it's their neck and neck, but that's where it is.
06:45What you, if you're looking at saving costs and the lions are going to have to look at that, where
06:52they're going to have to look at that comes in the form of the second round picks.
06:55It comes with, do you extend Sam, Sam Laporta?
06:59Do you extend Brian branch?
07:01Those are the tough decisions they've got coming up because those are all the same class, but they're entering their
07:08last year.

07:09They're entering year four because their second round picks in the second round picks only get the four years.
07:13So if you're going to have to start penny pinching, that's where you go.
07:18And you could, you can justify it because both of those players have been injured.
07:21And with Laporta, you've seen a dip in the production as well.
07:26Kang, your thoughts on this contract?
07:28I love the fact that they got them back and this is just the market is what the market is.
07:33You know, he, he, he's the highest paid running back, but barely.
07:36So, I mean, like I said, this, they didn't go over the top or anything like that.
07:39They, they, they saw what the market was.
07:41They paid them accordingly.
07:42And I agree with you, Gator.
07:43He, I think he is the most important singular player other than Jared Goff on this lions team.
07:49The office of line is great, but you don't have a guy like that or back there handing it off
07:53where he can take it to the house at any moment.
07:55Then it doesn't mean as much, you know, to get seven, eight, 10 yards.
07:58That's cool.
07:58You know, what's pretty cool, really cool.
07:5975 yard touchdown runs, a swing pass that's meant to cut, you know, get a first down.

08:10And he's going to say when he eventually speaks on this is I understand people don't want to pay the

08:17They look at Jameer Gibbs as an ultimate weapon.
08:20He can run between the tackles, but that's not what he's going to, he's getting paid for.
08:24It's, he's getting paid to take it to the house.
08:25He's got the elite speed.
08:27He can catch the ball.
08:28This past pro has gotten better.
08:30I think they just look at it.
08:31Like I agree for the most part, you don't want to overpay any position and you want to,
08:34especially the running back position.
08:36Cause you think that the longevity is not going to be there for that position, but they
08:39look at Jameer Gibbs as the player they're paying and the weapon they're paying.
08:42And I think it's worth it.
08:43He's incredibly young.
08:44Still, he's probably going to get a second contract at some point down the line.
08:48Look at Saquon Barkley.
08:49Look at Jonathan Taylor.
08:50Those guys are still getting paid and that wasn't their first deal or second deal.
08:55Jameer Gibbs is an elite running back.
08:56I'm not going to say generational cause everyone overuses that.
08:59I don't think he's generational, but I think he's, he's, he's elite right now.

09:03And he's one of the best and he's just a weapon.
09:05He can do so many other things that other running backs in this league can't do.
09:08And you have them on your team.

09:11Kenneth Walker, uh, who played for Seattle for the first four years of his career, right?
09:17Um, he, he signed a contract this off season as a free agent, three years and $43 million.

09:25And this is a guy who was, I believe was second round pick high second round pick, but all,
09:29all the hype in the world about him, he's been off injured and doesn't get the big money.
09:34I mean, it's a big contract, but it's by comparison, it pales in comparison.
09:39And for a guy who doesn't have near the production that, that, uh, Jameer Gibbs has had,
09:45and he's played an extra year.
09:46I mean, this, this shows you there's a separation of running backs in this league.
09:50And the separation is exactly those three guys who signed contracts this week, B.
09:56John Robinson, Jameer Gibbs, and, uh, and Jonathan Taylor are the elite of the elite.
10:03You know, there's a reason that they're surpassing Saquon Barkley.
10:07So it's, he's, he's owed the money.
10:10There's nothing wrong with paying it.
