00:00Hello there, welcome to your weekend outlook from the Met Office. We're talking about two things as we head through
00:06the weekend. First of all, a band of rain pushing in from the north and heading south as temperatures slowly
00:13rise across more southern areas. So yet again, we'll see values coming in the high 20s, if not the low
00:1930s, helped with some sunshine.
00:21So yes, two types of weather, two types of feel of the weather as we head through the weekend. And
00:28yes, some of you will see some wet conditions. Let's just pick up on the bigger picture. We have high
00:33pressure sitting across England and Wales as we head through Friday and into Saturday, but low pressures towards the north
00:40and another one towards the southwest. And this is going to move northwards and merge with this cold front, bringing
00:45with it some momentum to that rain and then it will just gradually sink southwards.
00:50So some higher rainfall totals are likely, particularly across the northwest of Scotland, where we've seen a fair amount of
00:57wet weather through the last week. So here's that high pressure. Here's that cold front there, bringing the rain, a
01:03squeeze on the isobars, meaning a breezy start to the weekend, if not windy, across Scotland and Northern Ireland. And
01:10you can see here that rain.
01:12Showery bursts first thing across Northern Ireland as the cloud thickens. Southern Scotland, England and Wales, one or two residual
01:19showers. Most places, though, will be dry through Saturday and certainly temperatures rising quite quickly across central and southern areas
01:26of England and Wales. A few showers just clipping Irish sea coasts.
01:30But at the same time, here's that band of rain becoming coherent. Some high rainfall totals, particularly across the northwest
01:36highlands. Notice behind, yes, that wind still continues with some strength and also some showers and that eventually all of
01:44this will be pushing its way southwards with the showers following across the far north and northwest of Scotland through
01:51Sunday.
01:52Before that, though, a pleasant end to the day across England and Wales, but it's turning very warm, if not
01:58hot, across these parts. So let's have a look at the temperatures.
02:02Well, first of all, towards the south, we could see values coming in probably around 26 to 28 degrees Celsius
02:09anywhere from mid Wales down towards the southeast of England. Some onshore breezes possible along this east coast here, even
02:17so stepping inland 26 to 27 Celsius.
02:20For Wales, yes, you could see a 26 across southern and central areas, 24 down towards the west country.
02:27Now for Northern Ireland, under that cloud and some showery rain, temperatures struggling a little bit, but even so in
02:33shelter places such as St. Uri, you could peak around 20 Celsius in a similar situation across central and southern
02:40areas of Scotland.
02:41But under the cloud with the wind, it's going to feel a lot cooler and values here probably only around
02:4615 to 17.
02:47Although places such as Aberdeenshire sheltered because of the highlands could see up to around 18 or 19.
02:54So a real contrast in temperature, a real contrast in weather as we head through Saturday afternoon and into evening
03:01time.
03:01But yes, a dry end to the day across many areas, England and Wales, whereas further north, this is the
03:10weather front there.
03:11Here's that slack area of low pressure sitting towards the southwest and slowly but surely this weather front will push
03:19down towards the central belt of Scotland, Northern Ireland and then into Northern England.
03:24So let's take you through Saturday evening. If you are making any plans to be out and about, you will
03:30notice some clearer skies across the Midlands southwards.
03:34But some showery bursts just within the flow across northern England, northern parts of Wales, perhaps even further southwest.
03:41And then we do have that thicker cloud across Scotland and Northern Ireland with some outbreaks of rain.
03:46The winds are strongest towards the far northwest there, coming in from a relatively mild direction, but certainly turning fresher
03:54here as we head through into Sunday.
03:56So through Saturday night, that rain makes inroads southwards.
04:01There's still a little bit of uncertainty about the distribution of that rain, how far south it will get.
04:06But certainly at the moment, as you can see here, it's nudging into Cumbria, Northumberland, even Lancashire.
04:13Much of the central belt, much of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland.
04:17Towards the north as we wake up on Sunday morning, some brighter weather.
04:21One or two showers, they will file in from the north.
04:25So we could see a lively downpour as we head through the day.
04:29And further south, yes, some mist and fog patches can't be ruled out.
04:32The air is warm, turning very warm, if not hot, through Sunday.
04:36And again, there's one or two just light showers lurking around most places that will be dry here.
04:41So let's take a look at the progress of the rain as we see it forecasting on Thursday across this
04:48area here for Sunday, the 9th of August.
04:50You can see where the rain is.
04:52It's slow moving and it is gradually pushing southwards.
04:56But as you can see, there's not a lot of movement on it.
04:59But we could see some filaments coming in across, say, North Yorkshire through the afternoon.
05:04Towards the north, some fleeting showers here, but also a bit of a cool breeze.
05:11Some brighter skies in shelter across Caithness than Murray Firth.
05:15For Northern Ireland, the rain could pep up from time to time, allowing for temperatures just struggling to around 19
05:22degrees Celsius.
05:22The air is relatively warm, though, so we could see a 21 across the central belt.
05:27But for England and Wales, temperatures are likely to be a degree, if not two degrees higher than Saturday.
05:33So coming in, say, for, I don't know, for anywhere from Humber Wash, 27 to 29.
05:38Again, there's a chance of some onshore breezes through the afternoon.
05:43For the Midlands, the southeast, 27 to 31 degrees Celsius.
05:47And we could see the high 20s across mid to southern parts of Wales.
05:51And even for the West Country, yes, temperatures here, 26 degrees Celsius.
05:56So, yes, again, this weather front here, really delineating the weather and how it feels to the south, as well
06:03as the north,
06:03and this central part here, seeing that rain.
06:06So that's the picture through the weekend.
06:09Into next week, that weather front gradually eases, loses its identity.
06:14It migrates north again, so a mix of clouds and some brighter weather.
06:18Temperatures could be a degree lower on Monday before rising yet again into Tuesday across England and Wales,
06:25becoming locally hot in places.
06:27And there will be a few showers around, some onshore breezes.
06:30But even so, some settled conditions as we start the beginning of next week.
