00:15When I received the script for this,
00:17it was a real bolt out of the blue,
00:20but it was immediately apparent that this was a great character.
00:23He starts off life as this young, innocent chimpanzee
00:29who is rescued from a laboratory
00:31and reared by human beings who love and cherish him
00:34and give him a great start in life.
00:36He's a young chimp that wants to be like us.
00:38He wants to be human because he sees the world for what it could be.
00:41It's like he lives in this attic in the house,
00:43and through the back window, a bit like rear window,
00:46he sees the beauty in us, the beauty of our civilisation.
00:50What he doesn't know, what Caesar doesn't know,
00:51is that he has inherited this superintelligence drug,
00:54which is a cure for Alzheimer's,
00:56and his surrogate father figure is this scientist
00:58who's been creating this drug,
01:00who is on a personal quest to find a cure for Alzheimer's
01:03because his father is suffering from it.
01:11Daddy, are you okay?
01:14Yeah, I'm fine.
01:16Caesar starts life out as this, as I say,
01:19this kind of gifted child, really,
01:20who has got this intelligence displaying the signs of this advanced intelligence.
01:26And then he reaches a point of self-awareness
01:29where he thinks he can't be part of,
01:31he can't be the same species as his surrogate father.
01:35And he goes into freefall and starts to panic
01:38and falls into despair, and he feels this rejection.
01:42All of this gets to a point where the fairy tale has to come to an end,
01:46and it takes us into a far darker world
01:48where he suddenly sees the world for what it also is,
01:51which is a more ruthless, exploitative and merciless world.

02:16When I heard that this new Planet the Apes movie was being made,
02:20my heart sank and I thought,
02:21oh, not another one, you know, why? Why?
02:23They were great movies at the time.
02:26And then, as I say, I read the script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silva.
02:31And it just blew my head off.
02:33I just thought, this is such an incredible piece of writing.
02:36The great thing about Andy is he's one of those actors that has the ability to perform.
02:42Very physical, very, you know, he can be very big.
02:46He can be very expressive.
02:47But then, by the same token, he has that ability to be incredibly minimalist and subtle.
02:52Myself and Rupert White, the director, really carefully crafted his evolution, his journey,
02:58from this young innocent to this powerful adult male leader,
03:02who leads not by force, but leads by empathy and leads by, you know,
03:09in a rather democratic way of making everyone of his tribe, his newly found tribe,
03:15feel valued in their position in the group.
03:27Well, it's really wonderful that audiences have so far seemed to have really embraced
03:31that idea of being challenged and going to a big movie like this to be entertained,
03:36obviously, but also to follow a very linear, sort of strong plot.
03:41It's obviously a blockbuster-type movie, but it has real heart, real soul, real integrity
03:46in terms of its storytelling, and characters that you really care about,
03:51which is such a rare thing in blockbuster movies of this day and age.
