00:06Kind of the song where we get a little bit in touch with our roots, finally, full-blown.
00:15It's just synthesizer and vocals, which I don't know if it was ever really a conscious
00:24decision to do that.
00:26But Johnny and I grew up playing synthesizers and that's kind of how we met, collecting
00:31old analog synthesizers and things.
00:35So I don't know, we were making the record and I came up with sort of this synth sequence
00:42and I played it for Johnny and he thought it would work, so he recorded some vocals over
00:49top of it.
00:50It's one of my favorite songs on the record.
00:52I feel like it is a little more of an aggressive sound than we usually go for, but I think
00:59that the song just kind of lent itself for that sort of aggressive sound.
01:09Yeah, these guys wanted to cut that song and I said, please don't cut that song, please
01:16don't leave, please don't cut that song.
01:18Please don't leave that song out of the album.
01:20And they're still here and the song's on the album, so.
01:23This song is also a little more synthesizer-y than you might expect from the drums, but
01:32once again, I think that the song lends itself to that sort of instrumentation.
01:38It's also, I think, a lot darker than most things we do.
01:41I mean, the whole record is, but maybe this song is particularly so.
01:48I Need a Doctor is track 10, and it's just about being mentally ill.
01:54And I really like this song, I think it's probably my favorite on the album.
01:59If only for, you know, the, I think we got just slightly, ever so slightly more experimental
02:08on that song than we do on most.
02:11Just trying things that we, that we absolutely would not have done on the first album.
02:17It felt good to sort of, you know, I think that we really let that song breathe and kind
02:23of be whatever it wanted to be, rather than shoving it into the confines of what we used
02:29to do.
02:30Like, every song we've released up until Portamento has been very visual for me, and I don't see
02:36any of these songs in a visual way, except for in the cold.
02:39I think that's the only one I just see, like, a cold train station, you know, that sort of
02:47thing.
02:47It's very visual, it's very cinematic to me.
02:50The rest of the album, the songs don't really do that for me, but I liked it in the cold,
02:55as I liked that.
02:57And How It Ended is the last song, and Just As The Future was the last song on the first
03:05album, where we kind of, when we were making it, we just knew that this would be the album.
03:11How It Ended was the same way, you know, when it was finished, we all just knew that was
03:15going to be how the album would end.
03:17And, you know, I like that it's, I think it has this very sad album ending on a somewhat
03:28hopeful note, even though the lyrics aren't hopeful, there's something in those, in the
03:34music that kind of just brings it up a little bit, rather than ending the album in absolute
03:40tragedy.
03:42You know, just to kind of, you know, maybe things will be okay one day, that kind of thing.
03:48So that's it.
03:49That is Portamento.

03:52The album's much more exciting than we're making it out to be, maybe.
