00:00The TTPS fraud squad is urging business owners, retailers and service providers to be on high alert as criminals target
00:07businesses using fraudulent checks.
00:10Police say the scam involves counterfeit, altered, forged or stolen checks being used to purchase goods and services.
00:17According to investigators, fraudsters often contact businesses by telephone or WhatsApp to place large orders before presenting what appears to
00:26be proof of payment.
00:27They then pressure staff to release the goods immediately, claiming the payment has already been processed or that there is
00:34an urgent deadline.
00:35In many cases, a courier or third party is sent to collect the items before the check is returned, unpaid
00:42by the bank.
00:43The TTPS says businesses should be particularly cautious when customers insist on collecting goods before funds have cleared,
00:50provide identification only through WhatsApp or become impatient when verification is requested.
00:57Police are also warning retailers to be extra vigilant on Friday afternoons and before public holidays when there may be
01:04less opportunity to verify payments with financial institutions.
01:08The fraud squad is advising businesses never to release goods or provide services until a check has been fully cleared
01:14and funds have been confirmed by their bank.
01:17Owners are also encouraged to inspect checks carefully for alterations, keep detailed transaction records, install CCTV systems and train employees
01:27to identify suspicious transactions.
01:29For high-value purchases, the TTPS recommends using secure electronic payment methods such as direct bank transfers instead of checks.
01:39Anyone who falls victim to check fraud is being urged to preserve all documents, CCTV footage and communications and report
01:47the matter immediately to the nearest police station or the TTPS fraud squad.
01:52Police are reminding the public that a check being deposited does not mean the funds have cleared
01:58and businesses should always verify the money is available before releasing goods.
