Today marks 50 years since champion runner Hasely Crawford won T&T's first ever Olympic gold.

And many continue to laud him for that accomplishment.

One of them is CANOC secretary general Brian Lewis, who describes Crawford as an inspiration to many.

00:13July 24th 1976 will forever remain an important part of Trinidad and Tobago's history.
00:18That was the day Haseley Crawford won TNT's first ever gold medal at the Olympics, achieving
00:23it in a time of 10.06 seconds in the 100 meters final in Canada.
00:27Fast forwarding to July 24th, 2026, that makes it the 50th anniversary of Crawford's accomplishment.
00:34Cannock Secretary General Brian Lewis has paid tribute to the former track star, saying
00:39the gold medal was a gift for the whole of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:42The feeling, the joy in Belmont where I grew up and all the young people, all the boys,
00:51running races in Bedford Lane, Belmont, and imagining and dreaming of being Haseley Crawford.
01:02According to Lewis, Crawford's achievement was an inspiration to TNT's citizens.
01:06He says it sent a clear message that nothing is impossible once an individual remains focused
01:13and disciplined, irrespective of his or her circumstances.
01:16No matter how humble the circumstances, no matter the obstacles, if you work hard, you believe
01:24in yourself and you dream big, you can conquer the world.
01:28And that's what Haseley Crawford's gold medal in 1976 represents the highest symbol of excellence
01:39and the potential of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:42The immediate past president of the TTOC was fortunate enough to interact with the champion
01:47runner on several occasions.
01:49For Lewis, the advice he received from the legend was just as precious as the Montreal gold.
01:55Through the years I have sought advice from Haseley Crawford and he has provided me with advice,
02:04not just in sport but life, in health.
02:10He's just a wonderful person as I said for me and someone I have enormous respect for
02:18and he remains an inspiration and a hero.
02:21Lewis says Crawford's feat should never be taken for granted and he therefore urges those
02:26in authority to educate the younger generation regarding the national icon.
