00:00Network Rail has apologised after hot weather and signalling faults caused delays and cancellations
00:06across the Mersey Rail network during the Open Championship. Some passengers travelling towards
00:12Royal Birkdale faced disruption, with services affected on routes, including Southport and the
00:18Wirral Line. Speaking to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authorities Transport Committee,
00:23Network Rail's Liverpool Area Director, Paul Owen, accepted recent performance had not been
00:29satisfactory. He said engineers were working around the clock on infrastructure problems,
00:35including signalling, while longer term measures would strengthen the network
00:39against extreme summer heat and future winter conditions.
