00:00A group condemning the repression under former President Makisa's rule in Senegal has spoken out against his arrival in Dakar
00:07on Friday to meet the Senegalese head of state as part of his campaign to lead the United Nations.
00:14The former president is accused by the authorities of having severely cracked down on opposition protests between 2021 and 2024,
00:22which left dozens dead across the country.
00:27We are concerned about the meeting that the President of the Republic, Basil Diomay Diakhar Faye, held with former President
00:34Makisa regarding his candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations.
00:43We do not believe that Mr Makisa is a suitable candidate to receive Senegal's support.
00:53For us, this is first and foremost the return of a man whose time as head of state remains associated
01:00with one of the most painful periods in our recent history.
01:04Dozens of people lost their lives during political demonstrations.
01:10Burundi had nominated former President Makisa is a candidate for the UN's top job.
01:16Salen, the West African nation, whose current government accused him of covering half unfavorable economic data from 2012 to 2024.
01:25This visit is a third assassination, a third act of torture, a third imprisonment for all the victims between 2021
01:36and 2024.
01:38Whether they be the martyrs who gave of themselves, who sacrificed their lives to ensure that Senegalese democracy and Senegal
01:45itself will not waver, stumble or fall.
01:49The selection process for the next United Nations Secretary General, whose time will begin on January 1st, 2017, was launched
01:59last November.
02:00Each potential candidate must be formally nominated by a state or group of states, but not necessarily by their country
02:07of origin.
