England called off their attackers after taking a 1-0 lead yesterday, but that didn’t stop Argentina from pulling off some late game magic. When will people stop doubting Lionel Messi?

00:00Anyway, we were talking before we went on the air about the Argentina game yesterday, and wow.
00:07I mean, this World Cup has been unbelievable.
00:10Cakes, I know you're not a soccer guy.
00:12Most of us aren't.
00:13That part is true, but I think we can all admit that the first 60, maybe 65 minutes of that
00:20game, in my opinion, were a snore fest.
00:23A lot of fouls, a couple cards.
00:25At one point, they flashed the graphic that there were, I think, 18 fouls between the two teams.
00:30And very few shots.
00:31And three shots.
00:32Yeah, very few shots.
00:33I still thought it was intriguing, though.
00:35I never watched it and went, wow, this sucks.
00:38I was watching it and I was intrigued by the drama.
00:40At halftime, my son and I looked at each other and we said, this is a boring game.
00:43So far.
00:44Not a lot happened.
00:45Not a lot happened, and then England goes up, and then the phrase that everybody uses is, they parked the
00:51bus.
00:51I know, I saw that a hundred times on Twitter yesterday.
00:54It's funny, my son is not a soccer fan.
00:56He's like, they're parking the bus.
00:58Yeah.
00:59But this is what Argentina has done throughout the tournament.
01:02I just saw, and I mean, I've watched every one of the games, but I didn't realize, in four straight
01:08games, they haven't had the lead after 90 minutes.
01:10Yeah.
01:11That's crazy.
01:12That's insane.
01:13Their ability to come back and pull this off.
01:16And they make a strategic move where they move Messi to the outside, and then he's just serving up dimes.
01:25Yeah, just ridiculous.
01:26You would think they'd move him to the left side, but they move him to the right side, and he
01:29actually comes up big with a right-footed cross, which is just a spectacular pass.
01:34And I know it's borderline absurd to think this far ahead, but I know he's 39 years old, and I
01:41know everybody's saying this is his last World Cup, because it will be 43 by the time the next one
01:46rolls around.
01:47He's so great.
01:48I feel like, because especially you see clips of him where he's running a lot, but there are also clips
01:54of him where he's just standing on the field waiting for the action to come to him, which, when you're
01:5939 years old, it makes all the sense in the world.
02:02Like, he should run it back in 2030.
02:05I just think he's not going to have any explosion at 43.
02:07He might not, but he's so great, and he's so magical that he should at least think about it.
02:14He should think about it.
02:15He's got plenty of time to think about it.
02:17I posted a video last night.
02:18Is he going to waste his time with the MLS?
02:22Is he going to waste his energy with that?
02:23It's easy money for him.
02:25Understood.
02:25Easy money.
02:26I would take the easy money.
02:27He's having fun.
02:28He should consider coming back in 2030.
02:32Sure.
02:32Maybe he'll see how his body feels.
02:34I posted a video last night, which is pretty entertaining, at Junk's Radio, and it's, I think, to James Bond
02:42music, and they have every touch of Messi.
02:46After England scored.
02:47He took over the game.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Well, also, England, I believe I saw the number.
02:53After England scored, Argentina's possession of the ball from that point on was 88%.
02:58Right.
02:59Yeah, they went into a show.
03:0088%.
03:01Like, that's, I understand wanting to get defensive, but that's, that's a little, you're swinging the pendulum a little too
03:08much in that direction.
03:09Well, especially with 35 minutes left in the game or whatever.
03:11It's not like you have 10 minutes left.
03:12You got 30 plus minutes.
03:14There was just too many chances.
03:15They were trying to get the ball.
03:17Messi doesn't turn it over.
03:18It's true.
03:19It's hard to get the ball away from him once he has it.
03:20And he has perfect crosses.
03:22Yeah.
03:22He can find heads, and then he draws so much attention, he can pass back.
03:27I mean, the first goal they had was just a banger.
03:30Yeah.
03:31But it was also because Messi drew the defense, drew a couple defenders, and then the guy had space.
03:38Yep.
03:39So, maybe he could do it.
03:41It's documented that he walks more than anybody else.
03:44And that's fine.
03:45You know what?
03:45He's in the World Cup.
03:46He's so amazing, he gets that grace, he gets that pass.
03:50Well, he just knows how he picks his spots, he knows what he's doing.
03:52You know what's funny is...
03:53That guy, Hartling or whatever, Holland, that guy does the same thing.
03:55He does a lot of walking.
03:56Sure.
03:56He's a lot younger.
03:59I don't follow him, but I happen to see it.
04:02Piers Morgan is a big...
04:04Obviously, he's rooting for England, but he's a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan.
04:11Yeah.
04:11And Piers Morgan, during the game, took a shot at Messi.
04:15Yeah.
04:17Before, when England was up 1-0, I'm trying to find the tweet, and then it just came back
04:22to haunt him.
04:23It was some of the effect of, is Messi even playing?
04:25Yeah, there it is.
04:26Is Messi playing?
04:27He should learn that, wait until the clock's at zero, wait for the whole play to play out
04:34instead of tweeting with 30 plus minutes left and basically doubting the greatest player
04:39in the world.
04:40It's going to come back and haunt you.
04:42I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
04:43I've really grown to...
04:45I mean, I told you, I bought the MLS package two years in a row when Messi joined just because
04:49he's so fun to watch.
04:50My buddy Lucas, who is from Spain, hates him so much.
04:55And he keeps sending me these great...
04:57Does the whole country hate him?
04:59I don't know.
05:00I mean, it's a huge divide.
05:02I know the Brits hate him after what happened.
05:04The Brits hate him.
05:04And I felt crestfallen for the British fans in the stands because they felt like, oh, we're
05:11going to the final.
05:12Like, we're heading to the final.
05:14We're going to take on Spain.
05:15And they just had it cruelly ripped away from them at the end.
05:20You know, they're showing that the father's holding their kids.
05:22They're showing the people dressed up as lions in the stands.
05:25And so they can't believe that they got broadsided and that the worst part is now the team has
05:31to go to Miami for a dumb third place game.
05:33You think any of those English players want to play in a third place game after losing
05:38to Argentina?
05:38I wouldn't think so.
05:40Their heart's not going to be in it.
05:41That's going to be brutal.
05:42I wouldn't think so.
05:43Those games are sometimes the best games of the whole World Cup because the teams don't...
05:46There's nothing really to...
05:47Like, if you lose, it's not a big deal.
05:49Yeah.
05:49So they just go all out and attack.
05:51It's like a fun game a lot of times.
05:53So don't sleep on the third place game.
05:55Yeah.
05:55I know Cakes is mocking it and saying, we don't do that here and all that.
05:59But it's actually pretty good.
06:01When did they play it, though?
06:03Just right before the final?
06:04No, I think it's on Saturday.
06:06Pretty sure.
06:06The day before.
06:07I think.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Yeah.
06:08I don't know if I'll make time to watch it.
06:10So the drama was high in Argentina.
06:13England, they advanced to take on Spain Sunday.
06:15I believe the kick is 2 or 3 p.m. from MetLife in New Jersey.
06:21Coming up on an open line Thursday, we've got a packed guest schedule.
06:24Danny Ruye, our pal from Grant and Danny.
06:27He's going to join us at 745 to talk about the Nats.
06:31And he's going to talk about a special broadcast that he's going to be part of coming up soon as
06:36well.
06:36Ben Standing on the show at 9 o'clock.
06:39And this is a name you haven't heard lately.
06:41And he's returning Kevin McCarthy, movie reviewer.
06:45He's reviewing Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
06:48He will do that at 940.
06:50So lots to get to here on the junks on an open line Thursday.
