00:00:02Welcome in, Friday's Wake Up Barstool, guys.
00:00:06Let's start off the week in the right way with a great show.
00:00:08And look at that, France takes down Morocco.
00:00:10The French looking overwhelming.
00:00:14Plus, we'll continue to look at the rest of the World Cup quarterfinals.
00:00:17We got Chief in here today.
00:00:18We got the money quarter, mega-mega money.
00:00:20We're starting a summer sandwich bracket smash or pass.
00:00:2632 sandwiches in there.
00:00:27We got a few players to get to today.
00:00:29It's going to be a ton of fun, and it all starts now on FS1.
00:00:55T-Bob Averick, Michael Caden, Dana Beards.
00:00:58We got Chief joining us today for some funny talk, and Megan making money behind the desk.
00:01:03And breaking news, guys, right before he came on air, Michael Caden says he can't wait to get bombed this
00:01:09weekend.
00:01:10Unreal stuff there, Mikey.
00:01:12What are we thinking?
00:01:13What do we got going on?
00:01:14It's the Windy City Smokeout.
00:01:15Okay, heck yeah.
00:01:16I'm excited for it.
00:01:17Heck yeah.
00:01:17Hanging out with the peeps, man.
00:01:19Okay, okay, right on.
00:01:20So that's going to be like, that's crazy.
00:01:21I just never heard you say that before.
00:01:22So, like, I was shocked.
00:01:23I was like, yeah, I have to dive into this right off the bat.
00:01:27Boys, good to be back, though.
00:01:28Week is here, Chief France.
00:01:30Yeah, they're unstoppable.
00:01:31Unbelievable.
00:01:31They're never going to lose.
00:01:32Kylian Mbappe, what is it, 20 World Cup goals now?
00:01:36Something like that.
00:01:37Kind of insane.
00:01:38Messi's at 21.
00:01:39Like, the record was 16 entering this tournament.
00:01:41Yeah, and he's not done.
00:01:43He's only 27, so he's going to play again in four years, maybe in eight years after that.
00:01:48So he's going to end up with, I don't know, 40, 45 goals.
00:01:51So the guy's unbelievable.
00:01:53France is unbelievable.
00:01:54Nobody's going to beat him.
00:01:55It's almost like anticlimactic at this point.
00:01:57Like, they're just so good and so unstoppable.
00:02:00I think a few people had hope that Morocco could, you know, pull an upset or be competitive.
00:02:06I think they had one shot on target through 90 minutes.
00:02:09France missed.
00:02:10And Mbappe missed a penalty yesterday, too.
00:02:12He could have had one in the first half.
00:02:13I think he put another one off the crossbar.
00:02:15It was domination from the word go.
00:02:18It was just a matter of time before, like, the floodgates opened here.
00:02:21And they got two within, I think, six or seven minutes.
00:02:23Look at that shot.
00:02:24Wow.
00:02:25Bend it right in.
00:02:25Look at that shot.
00:02:27And the replay doesn't give full justice to how quick the setup was on that shot.
00:02:33It's like a quarterback with an elite release, just no windup at all, and yet perfectly
00:02:39drops it in the buggy.
00:02:40Yeah, no laces, no problem.
00:02:42I think being able to snipe a soccer net is one of the, like, coolest, most impressive.
00:02:48The way it bends in like that, too.
00:02:50Yeah.
00:02:50Athletic feats.
00:02:51I like the knuckleballs.
00:02:52Yeah.
00:02:52Those are sick.
00:02:53Yeah.
00:02:54To your point, Dan, it's one of the most ASMR-like.
00:02:57It's just beautiful.
00:02:58Like, you watch it and you feel, yeah, you feel, like, in your loins a little bit.
00:03:01I have a question.
00:03:03Go for it.
00:03:03Flash.
00:03:04Can I guess what Premier League team he's on?
00:03:08Who, Mbappe?
00:03:08Yeah.
00:03:09Yeah, go for it.
00:03:10I don't know.
00:03:10Okay, go ahead.
00:03:11AC Milan.
00:03:12Okay, they're not in the Premier League.
00:03:14Real Madrid.
00:03:15He is on Real Madrid.
00:03:17Oh, boy.
00:03:17But, but, but.
00:03:19But they're not in the Premier League, either.
00:03:20Oh, they're not.
00:03:21What?
00:03:22What league is Real Madrid?
00:03:24No.
00:03:24No, they're not in the Champions League.
00:03:26Euro League.
00:03:26They are in the Champions League.
00:03:27Euro League.
00:03:28Oh, Champions League.
00:03:28I thought he said Championship.
00:03:30My bad.
00:03:30No, no, no.
00:03:31They play in La Liga.
00:03:32It's all confusing.
00:03:33Spain, Spain's main league.
00:03:35Oh.
00:03:35We're football guys.
00:03:36Spain's main.
00:03:37Seven more weeks.
00:03:39But, yeah.
00:03:40So, look, Kelly, I mean, you said it.
00:03:42But how about this?
00:03:43Like, we keep sitting all the time on the French offense and the TGCY.
00:03:47Mbappe's sitting on all his records.
00:03:48I think yesterday was his 12th knockout round goal, which is also a record.
00:03:53Dembele's the current Ballon d'Or winner.
00:03:56But, like, the French defense, you also can't breathe.
00:04:00I mean, they've given up two goals now in six games.
00:04:03They feel so complete.
00:04:04So, you've given yourself over to French inevitability.
00:04:07The only possibility I see is just Messi just does something insane.
00:04:11Like, which is kind of what happened the last time when Messi won it.
00:04:14It was him and Mbappe.
00:04:16That game went all the way to PKs.
00:04:18I think Messi had two or did he have three in the final last year?
00:04:22He might have had a hat trick in the final last year.
00:04:24He definitely had two.
00:04:25And Mbappe had two in that game.
00:04:27It was just chaos the last ten minutes and then all the way through extra time until we
00:04:31finally got to penalties.
00:04:32So, unless there's some otherworldly performance by Messi, I can't see anyone topping them.
00:04:39Now, what about Spain?
00:04:41I mean, Spain, Belgium, we're going to see them later today.
00:04:43A lot of people expecting Spain to dominate.
00:04:46And granted, Greg Berhalter did say on this show yesterday that he thought that Morocco
00:04:50was best placed to kind of challenge France.
00:04:53But, like, I know Spain offensively hasn't been great, but they haven't conceded the entire
00:04:57tournament thus far.
00:04:58Yeah.
00:04:58And if you watch the United States against Belgium, I think this game will look very
00:05:04similar to that game, where we just couldn't get near Belgium.
00:05:08They were passing all around us.
00:05:10We also looked horrible in that game.
00:05:12But I think Spain is just their midfield.
00:05:14The way they move the ball, it's like kind of that, they call it tiki-taka.
00:05:19Yeah.
00:05:19Which is what they had, you know, when they won it in ten.
00:05:21But it's still, like, a version of that, where it's short passing, a lot of skill.
00:05:25And, like, you just can't get close to them.
00:05:28So, it's almost like the best defense is a good offense, where it's just ball control.
00:05:33Yeah.
00:05:33Nobody can touch them.
00:05:34And then, at some point, they slip one through, and they score.
00:05:37So, I think that, yeah, I don't think Belgium's going to be quick enough to really do anything
00:05:43against them, and Spain will win that.
00:05:44It might not be high scoring, but it'll be Spain dominating.
00:05:48Do you have any, like, reservations towards Spain or Argentina, just based off some of
00:05:53the games they've played, whether it was Cape Verde, or even the Portugal game, they
00:05:57didn't score until the 97th mid.
00:05:58Yeah, the Portugal game was actually one of the more boring games.
00:06:00Yeah.
00:06:01I mean, the thing with Spain, like, so when they won it in 2010, they had, like, this incredible
00:06:07midfield, and they played the same way, but then they also had, like, a big-time striker
00:06:10up front who's capable of finishing, and they just don't really have, like, that superstar
00:06:15striker, and they haven't needed it so far.
00:06:18They'll need it against France.
00:06:20I don't think that they'll need it today against Belgium, but, yeah, like, there seems like
00:06:26there's something, like, that elite, they're a great team, they're not, like, an elite team.
00:06:31So, there's, like, a little bit missing from their attack.
00:06:34I have a question as well.
00:06:35Yes.
00:06:35If you know that you're Spain, and you're that much better than Belgium, are you going
00:06:40to rest some of your, like, better players to get ready for France?
00:06:44Not at this stage.
00:06:45Okay.
00:06:45This is, like, this is knockout round stuff, so it's, like, you might do that, like, if
00:06:50you've locked up the group, you know, in that stage, like, we saw the United States do that
00:06:53against Turkey, where they rested everybody, didn't want to risk any additional yellow cards.
00:06:58At this point in the tournament, it's full go for everybody.
00:07:02Well, and production got my ear and said, well, Belgium rested their guys.
00:07:04Belgium didn't rest their guys.
00:07:05They made a tactical decision to start a little more speed against the U.S., and obviously
00:07:12it worked on perfect.
00:07:13Yeah.
00:07:13More speed, more athleticism in the midfield.
00:07:16Yeah.
00:07:16It was Kevin De Bruyne, who's one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League,
00:07:20but he's a little bit older.
00:07:22And we have, or had, we thought, a pretty athletic midfield.
00:07:25And so they just, like, let him rest, kind of, but also just, like, this game's not really
00:07:32built for him.
00:07:33And then Jeremy Doku, who's, like, a young guy, speedy winger, that one was the one that
00:07:37surprised me.
00:07:38He came on late against the United States, but they made a tactical decision not to use
00:07:43two of their bigger name guys.
00:07:45So, speaking of the U.S., we now have some insight into Christian Pulisic's injury as
00:07:51it comes out that he had a bone bruise and a microfracture of his tibia and fibula.
00:07:58Was this from when he kicked the ground?
00:08:01From when he kicked, yeah.
00:08:02It was not coming into the game.
00:08:03He did not have it.
00:08:04It's being tied to that play where he kicked the back of the guy's leg.
00:08:09How hard do you have to kick his leg to have a bone bruise and a fracture?
00:08:13I mean...
00:08:13What is a microfracture?
00:08:15What's that?
00:08:16What's a microfracture?
00:08:17I think I have a microfracture every day.
00:08:20Microfracture feels like it could be doing a bit of, like, heavy lifting and maybe...
00:08:25But I did read he's going to be out weeks.
00:08:28Oh, weeks?
00:08:28Weeks.
00:08:29Weeks.
00:08:29Not months.
00:08:31Rest up, Christian.
00:08:32But weeks.
00:08:33So I'm gathering here, Chief, that it hasn't changed your frustration with Pulisic.
00:08:38No.
00:08:38Like, a bone bruise and a microfracture?
00:08:41Like, dude, it's a World Cup.
00:08:42It's on home soil.
00:08:43We've been talking about you since you were 16.
00:08:46This is supposed to be your moment.
00:08:48And you sub yourself off when you're supposed to be the guy that can drag us through a game
00:08:54like that.
00:08:55You're supposed to be our star.
00:08:57He's a good player.
00:08:58He's obviously playing, you know, AC Milan, although he was horrible for them this year.
00:09:03But it's like, at this point to me, he's a myth.
00:09:06Like, he's just a guy, like, it's a name.
00:09:08He was supposed to be like, you know, it was like a USA almost, like, joke where people
00:09:14were like, oh, he's a LeBron James of soccer.
00:09:16He's not even close to that.
00:09:17Yeah.
00:09:17He's, you know, he's not even the Chris Bosh of soccer.
00:09:20Like, he's, he's just like, it's just such a huge disappointment.
00:09:23And this goes back to, like, when I was a kid and, like, the more recent, like, the Landon,
00:09:29Donovan, Clint Dempsey teams, we were nowhere near as talented as this team.
00:09:34But they played, like, with so much more fight and heart.
00:09:37And they found ways to get to the exact stage here where they just got overwhelmed.
00:09:42We were thinking that this time, on home soil, we have guys that play in the Premier League,
00:09:47Serie A, Spain.
00:09:49Like, we do, we are, like, on paper more talented.
00:09:52But we just, we don't have the dogs.
00:09:54Like, we just don't have the guys with enough bite and toughness.
00:09:57I mean, they chugged.
00:09:58And they were, they were ticked.
00:09:59It was pathetic.
00:10:00This was unbelievable.
00:10:01You could tell from 30 seconds in that they just weren't up for it mentally.
00:10:05And they got, you know, eight minutes in, they give up a goal.
00:10:08And it was like, the game was never close.
00:10:10So, on the Pulisic front, I think I'll say this.
00:10:12I agree with everything you said in terms of, like, zooming out and looking at who he's been for this
00:10:20team,
00:10:20what he's done in his World Cups.
00:10:22It is a myth.
00:10:23I have no expectation left.
00:10:24I could take him or leave him next tournament.
00:10:26Though, I mean, again, he'll be still at a prime age to be on the team.
00:10:31And maybe he'll have some great redemption story.
00:10:33But, like, whatever.
00:10:33I'm just kind of, I'm not going to expect it anymore out of Chris Pulisic.
00:10:37That said, if I do zoom in on this moment, I think I'm actually okay with him subbing himself out
00:10:44now.
00:10:44Subbing yourself out, that is.
00:10:46I agree.
00:10:47No, I get it.
00:10:48Unless, yeah, it probably hurt a lot.
00:10:52But, I mean, subbing yourself out when you're representing your country is, I mean.
00:10:58It's an anathema to the football brother's mind.
00:11:01Imagine if Tom Brady broke his finger and subbed himself out of the Super Bowl.
00:11:06Mike, you can't even imagine it.
00:11:08You can't even.
00:11:08You can't imagine.
00:11:10But what, I mean, to play devil's advocate here.
00:11:12Because, again, he would have been out the rest of the tournament.
00:11:13Like, would not have been able to play.
00:11:14No shooting it up.
00:11:15No nothing.
00:11:15He would have been out.
00:11:16Why not just leave it all out?
00:11:17You're already going to lose.
00:11:18You're down 3-1 when he's got subbed out.
00:11:20Like, what if you feel like.
00:11:22And, again, to be clear.
00:11:24None of this excuses the first half performance where he turned the ball over 12 times.
00:11:27He was not.
00:11:28Horrible.
00:11:29Like, yeah, it was bad.
00:11:31But what if you're out there running and you, like, legitimately can't run?
00:11:34Like, you can't be celebrating.
00:11:35You got it.
00:11:36I don't know.
00:11:37I mean, look, like, Landon Donovan had the comment where he's like, I played on a fully
00:11:42torn hamstring and, like, played the next game, too.
00:11:45And didn't tell anybody.
00:11:46Yeah.
00:11:47And his comment was, if the doctor told me that I couldn't play, I would have punched him
00:11:51in the face.
00:11:51Yeah, he said I'd punch him in the face and tell him to shoot me up.
00:11:54Yeah.
00:11:55And then, like, Carly Lloyd, who's one of the best women's players ever, she was, like,
00:11:59getting some pushback when that, you know, he's got a micro fracture.
00:12:03She was, like, you know, because you, like, rest when your career's over.
00:12:06Right.
00:12:06She's like, I don't have to apologize to anybody.
00:12:09Because people are like, you should apologize to Christian Blue.
00:12:11She was like, I'm not apologizing to anybody.
00:12:13Like, this, like, he's getting called out not just from, like, American football, hockey,
00:12:18like, fans who expect a degree of toughness.
00:12:20Yeah, there's Carly Lloyd.
00:12:21And then she followed up on that, too.
00:12:23Where it's like, even people in USA Soccer are like, this is pathetic.
00:12:27And it was.
00:12:28It was just like, it was just like a wet fart to end the tournament.
00:12:32You're pouting and trying on the sideline.
00:12:34It's like.
00:12:35And he had already, you know.
00:12:36Die on the field.
00:12:37He had more moments, more minutes on the bench in this tournament than he did on the field
00:12:41because he got hurt in the first half of the Paraguay game.
00:12:44Die with honor.
00:12:44So, you know, just, you want guys to be like, and like, I think it's, it feels like he just
00:12:51doesn't care about the national team that much.
00:12:54Which, you know, he skipped the Gold Cup last year when it's like, that was the United States
00:12:59last opportunity to have.
00:13:01Like, meaningful games.
00:13:02Competitive games because they didn't have any World Cup qualifiers because they're hosting.
00:13:05So, if you're preparing for the biggest tournament in the history of the country, the biggest
00:13:10moment of your life, you're like, ah, I got to, I got to rest and get ready for the season.
00:13:14Which, you know, I have like a degree of sympathy for that.
00:13:17But like, this is the moment.
00:13:20Like, this is like, you know, you're already under, you're going to get paid by AC Milan
00:13:23regardless.
00:13:25This is the moment.
00:13:26You have the new coach.
00:13:27You have a young team and pieces coming in and out.
00:13:29You have to have some level of cohesion and camaraderie.
00:13:34And they just didn't.
00:13:35Like, they were like a lifeless team.
00:13:38And, you know, we all got hyped up when they beat Paraguay.
00:13:41That was like the 71st ranked team in the world.
00:13:43So, you know, so it's like, yeah, you pumped Paraguay.
00:13:46You got in a dogfight with Australia.
00:13:48You subs against Turkey, whatever.
00:13:51This was overall pathetic showing on home soil for this tournament.
00:13:56I need to see the x-rays.
00:13:58Yeah.
00:13:58I'm going to need to see the x-rays.
00:13:59There's going to be no dog in his x-rays, I'll tell you that.
00:14:01Well, you're going to need a microscope because it's a micro fracture.
00:14:04Allegedly.
00:14:05And a bruise.
00:14:06A bruise.
00:14:07Chief, what you landed on there at the very end, though, that is a bit surprising to me.
00:14:13So, you're saying overall a terrible showing as a tournament.
00:14:18Yeah.
00:14:19Despite the fact that.
00:14:20You had one good half.
00:14:22You had one good half.
00:14:24No, no.
00:14:24Yes.
00:14:25The Australia game was good.
00:14:26The Australia game was still good.
00:14:28It wasn't.
00:14:29The Bosnia Hurts convenient was good.
00:14:30It wasn't.
00:14:31Yeah.
00:14:31The Bosnia game.
00:14:32The Bosnia game.
00:14:33The Bosnia game.
00:14:33The Bosnia game.
00:14:34Where you got to overcome being a man down for the last 30 minutes.
00:14:36You extend the lead.
00:14:37Yeah.
00:14:38Tillman had the goal, you know, on the free kick.
00:14:40But even the Bosnia game, it was like.
00:14:42So, are you out on Poch?
00:14:44No.
00:14:44I don't think Poch is the problem.
00:14:46I mean, he was barely here.
00:14:48But you want to bring him.
00:14:49I mean, he's 1-7 against the European teams in his tenure.
00:14:51I think the U.S. is like 1-2-12 if we don't get recently.
00:14:56So, it's a bigger problem.
00:14:57I think the Bosnia game was our first win against the European team.
00:15:01We were like 0-2 in March.
00:15:04Belgium just pumped you in March.
00:15:06We got to get some dogs, man.
00:15:07We got to get some dogs.
00:15:08But I'm saying, but as Pochettino, is he the guy?
00:15:10Because yesterday, we had Doug McIntyre come on here, and he laid out a very logical and
00:15:17well-reasoned argument that there is no way in hell that Mauricio Pochettino should return
00:15:21as the head man.
00:15:22I don't think he's the biggest problem.
00:15:24I think we got a cultural problem.
00:15:25But Pochettino, like, he's a guy who finished second in the Premier League.
00:15:28He's coached at PSG.
00:15:30He's coached at Spurs.
00:15:30He's coached at Southampton.
00:15:32Like, his resume.
00:15:33But you just said the tournament was bad.
00:15:35It was bad.
00:15:35And they face-planted.
00:15:37They way underperformed.
00:15:40It's not like they just got beat by a better team.
00:15:41They drastically underperformed in the single most important game, in the single game that
00:15:46you paid Pochettino all the money to get you passed.
00:15:49So how are you squaring this logic?
00:15:51If Poch leaves, which I think he will, I'm not going to be, like, crying about it.
00:15:55Yeah.
00:15:55But if I'm going to, like, if it's like a pie chart where you're assigning blame for
00:16:00what happened in this tournament, he's a very small sliver.
00:16:04So I think he's a very, like...
00:16:06Who's the big sliver?
00:16:07I think it's the players.
00:16:09It's Pulisic.
00:16:10It's, you know, Jedi Robinson didn't really do anything.
00:16:13Like, Jedi Robinson's best moments came in the tune-up games.
00:16:16Yeah.
00:16:16So it's like, the guys that you were really hoping for to lead this team just didn't show
00:16:23up.
00:16:23And we always knew that goalkeeping was going to be an issue.
00:16:26It was a way bigger issue than anybody anticipated with that last goal.
00:16:30That last game was brain freeze.
00:16:31You know?
00:16:32Yeah, brain freeze.
00:16:32And, you know, Tim Ream, you know, it's like, he's the captain, but he's also 38 years old.
00:16:39So the fact that they haven't been able to develop any young center backs is a problem.
00:16:43They got a lot of problems with this group.
00:16:45And it's just, you know, it was fun.
00:16:48That Paraguay game was fun.
00:16:49Everybody kind of getting on board, believing, like, getting in the hype train.
00:16:53And then you look at the Australia game was ugly.
00:16:55The Turkey game was, like, a whatever.
00:16:59Bosnia, like...
00:17:01I wonder if you would be interpreting those earlier games the same way if it hadn't gone
00:17:06so disastrously against Belgium.
00:17:09Well, if we were still playing?
00:17:10Like, yes.
00:17:11Well, yes.
00:17:12But no, no.
00:17:12But this doesn't matter, though, because those games are those games no matter what.
00:17:16Yeah.
00:17:16Right?
00:17:17So, like, if, yeah, they had made the quarterfinal, would you still have that same energy for
00:17:21those Australia and Turkey games and Bosnia games?
00:17:24I think the Turkey game I wrote off, because it was all...
00:17:27The Turkey game didn't matter.
00:17:28I agree.
00:17:28The Australia game...
00:17:29But even the Turkey game, we were kind of excited to see, like, okay, still some good
00:17:32attack, because the U.S. has never been that consistent on the attack.
00:17:35Yeah, for sure.
00:17:37But it's, like, I mean, you can't...
00:17:38That question is, like, well, if they had beaten Belgium, like, yeah, that's a paradigm
00:17:42shift in this conversation.
00:17:44They didn't.
00:17:45And not only did they not beat them, they got dummied.
00:17:48Yeah.
00:17:48And they, like, just didn't play...
00:17:50They didn't show up.
00:17:51It was pathetic.
00:17:51I mean, again, the first goal tells you the entire story.
00:17:54Where everybody's just standing around watching.
00:17:56Yeah, so I have...
00:17:57There's, like, whatever they do going forward, but...
00:18:00And I said, like, I think...
00:18:01I love soccer, and the national team has always been, like, the thing I care about the most
00:18:06in this sport.
00:18:06Yeah.
00:18:07I think I'm done with that.
00:18:08No.
00:18:08I think I'm a club over country guy.
00:18:10No, you're being too emotional right now, Chief.
00:18:14But it's like, what's the way forward?
00:18:16I think this might, for this generation, this might be just the ceiling.
00:18:21You know, and I thought that maybe, like, the next round, which we've gotten to the
00:18:24round of eight before the quarterfinals, Landon Donovan, 2002.
00:18:28But it's just, it's not even that they lost, it's, like, how they played in the loss, where
00:18:32it's just, like...
00:18:33They got...
00:18:34It's no heart, and it's like you watch the movie Miracle, and it's like, do you need the
00:18:38best guys?
00:18:38Do you need the right guys?
00:18:39And we went with the best guys, and it was wrong.
00:18:42More Wake Up Barstool coming up next.
00:18:47What's happening, y'all?
00:18:48Welcome back to Wake Up Barstool here on FS1.
00:18:51We got some other headlines to get to.
00:18:53So, great footy talk there to open the show.
00:18:56Good job, boys.
00:18:57Let's start with Kawhi Leonard.
00:18:59So, of course, Kawhi Leonard being traded from the Clippers to the Raptors.
00:19:03Brandon Ingram's involved in that trade.
00:19:04The trade, though, is reportedly on hold.
00:19:07The Raptors have put it on hold until the NBA lets them know, okay, what's going to
00:19:12happen with the Kawhi Leonard aspiration drama?
00:19:15What will the penalties be?
00:19:18The NBA, in response, has said they have no timetable yet.
00:19:23Dana, what do you make of this entire kerfluffle?
00:19:26This is wild.
00:19:27This is truly wild, and to me, it kind of sounds like maybe there is a potential suspension
00:19:35that hasn't been announced or that has maybe been talked about behind closed doors.
00:19:40For Kawhi?
00:19:41Yeah.
00:19:41And I'm not talking, like, a 10-game suspension.
00:19:44I'm, like, long.
00:19:46Because why else would this be just not talked about until just now, until after the trade
00:19:53was announced?
00:19:54There must have been something that came up.
00:19:56Yeah, like, maybe we got some wind of, like, oh, wait, this might actually be worse.
00:19:59Yeah, like, this is a bigger deal than we actually thought.
00:20:02But this is insane.
00:20:03I mean, we, it, you were just saying, T-Bob, it's tough to kind of, like, have a whole lot
00:20:11of sympathy for, not sympathy, but, like, talking about Kawhi and aspiration.
00:20:15I'm sure he'll have, like, a ton of emotion for the entire thing.
00:20:18I'm kind of sick of hearing about it as well, just the aspiration part.
00:20:22But if he's suspended for 50 games, 60 games, that's a big deal.
00:20:26So what would, what would warrant a suspension like that?
00:20:29Is this off-field thing?
00:20:29This is kind of, like, unprecedented.
00:20:31Yeah, they tried to circumvent the cap in a pretty shady way.
00:20:34Off the court?
00:20:34But it's also, like, it's, like, a problem that is so dense when you break it down.
00:20:39I mean, hell, it took an entire Pablatori to find it out, right?
00:20:41Like, multiple of them.
00:20:43Like, it's so dense that it can also kind of cause your eyes to glaze over a bit.
00:20:47It's a little, yeah.
00:20:48Which is maybe what they're kind of hoping for in terms of the general public and us
00:20:52just being like, whatever, I don't want to hear about it.
00:20:54But the NBA is not going to glaze over this because, to Dana's point, it does feel like
00:20:59if they allow Kawhi and the Clippers to skate here, that sort of opens up a precedent that
00:21:07could be a little dangerous in terms of, like, teams finding ways to avoid things like the
00:21:13luxury tax and finding ways around the salary cap through extra income streams.
00:21:18Yeah, absolutely.
00:21:19And this is kind of a crappy situation for all parties.
00:21:23I mean, knowing Kawhi and just who he is, I doubt he was trying to get into some, like,
00:21:29situation where he was, you know, going to end up possibly suspended.
00:21:33He probably didn't even know what he was getting into, to be honest.
00:21:36Yeah.
00:21:37And...
00:21:37I don't think this was his scheme.
00:21:39No, I don't think so.
00:21:40Yeah.
00:21:41And it's obviously crappy for the Clippers.
00:21:44It's not great for the Raptors, who thought they were getting their NBA champion back.
00:21:48So it's very, it's just like, it's a major storyline in the offseason here.
00:21:53Here's what the Clippers said, quote,
00:21:55We have since been informed that the trade can only be finalized if the Raptors' ownership
00:21:59groups assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi's contract that could theoretically
00:22:04result from the ongoing investigation.
00:22:07Yeah, and what...
00:22:09But is that a financial hook?
00:22:11Like, or are they talking about a suspension there?
00:22:13Like, that's what, like, to me...
00:22:14I think it means just risk, like, financially, whatever this...
00:22:20Whatever Steve Ballmer's dealing with right now, he probably just passes it off to...
00:22:25That's insane!
00:22:26Exactly.
00:22:26That's insane!
00:22:27Yeah, that's true.
00:22:27So what organization in their right mind...
00:22:30I don't know if that's true, but what organization in their right mind would just accept...
00:22:33That reads like, yes, they would be financial as well.
00:22:35But, like, why...
00:22:36The Raptors didn't do anything wrong.
00:22:37Yeah.
00:22:37Right, you know, so to me, this is like, all right, you penalize the Clippers with a heavy
00:22:43fine and probably some draft picks.
00:22:45I have, like, a faint memory of Joe Smith and the Timberwolves having an issue like this
00:22:49where they were circumventing the cap somehow, and I think they took, like, four or five years
00:22:53of first-round picks away from them.
00:22:54So do something like that.
00:22:56Let Kawhi go.
00:22:58Yeah.
00:22:58Because, like, the Raptors, like, if you want to suspend Kawhi or give him a heavy fine
00:23:02too, I feel like that's fair.
00:23:04But to penalize the Raptors as an organization financially feels insane if that's what that
00:23:09Well, let's not go too hard on that because I still...
00:23:11That feels so ludicrous.
00:23:13Yeah.
00:23:13To your point, like, it's probably more about time that he'll miss and whatever personal
00:23:17penalties he may incur.
00:23:19For what it's worth, the Aspiration CEO apparently just got sentenced to 14 years in jail.
00:23:24Which, like, in today's day and age, do you know how hard you have to work and scam to
00:23:30go to jail for white-collar crime?
00:23:32That's real fraud.
00:23:32Like, it's impossible to go to jail for white-collar crime and financial fraud nowadays.
00:23:37So shout out to him.
00:23:38Wait, so is Kawhi and the Clippers organization both equally responsible for this?
00:23:44Or is this, like, more so organization and Kawhi kind of didn't know what was going on?
00:23:48It's a nuanced...
00:23:49I mean, Kawhi was cashing the checks.
00:23:51Yeah, Kawhi assumed somebody.
00:23:52He didn't have to know the ins and outs and the details, but somebody in his camp at some
00:23:58point said, look, man, like, we got to, you know, we're going to get some extra money out
00:24:02of this deal.
00:24:02We're going to get some extra juice out of this deal.
00:24:04Do you guys know who his agent is?
00:24:05No.
00:24:06No?
00:24:06His uncle?
00:24:07No.
00:24:07You always hear about Kawhi's uncle.
00:24:09I don't think he's actually his agent.
00:24:10All right.
00:24:10But Kawhi's uncle has become, like, a shadowy figure in Leonard's entire career.
00:24:15I don't know what the exact word would be, but, like, disbarred or have their license
00:24:18removed for this, too?
00:24:19Like, kind of blackballed by the NBA?
00:24:21It's a weird, nuanced, like, weird situation, but to me, this just sounds like he's going
00:24:28back to the Clippers.
00:24:29Because what organization or owner in their right mind would take on the liability of
00:24:33something like this that could be major, especially if, like I said, it's a big suspension, or
00:24:38even financially, like, what's the risk?
00:24:41Like, what's, is that worth the risk whatsoever to get a 34-year-old Kawhi Leonard?
00:24:47Well, let's say, let's say that there's, let's remove the financial element out of it.
00:24:51Yeah.
00:24:52Because that, I think everyone agrees that would be absurd to financially.
00:24:54That'd be good, yeah, that'd make any sense.
00:24:56How many games could Kawhi miss where you're like, this is still worth it?
00:25:01Like, if he misses half the year, is this?
00:25:0220?
00:25:03I'm saying, yeah, this, I'm kind of with Dana where now, after seeing all this, that's
00:25:07just, potential suspension feels like it would at least be like half a season or something.
00:25:11So, if it's half a season, is it still worth it to the Raptors to make, do you get them
00:25:16for the final 41?
00:25:17Probably not.
00:25:17No?
00:25:18No.
00:25:18I mean, they don't, they're giving up Brandon Ingram.
00:25:21I mean, they do have a decent, like, core that they could get along without him, but
00:25:26you're trading, you're trading for Kawhi Leonard, you're not, like, it's...
00:25:31But I mean, at that point, though, load management's taken care of for you.
00:25:34Yeah, true.
00:25:35If he's suspended, does that mean he cannot practice either?
00:25:39I, I'm not sure, I'm not 100% sure on that.
00:25:41I feel like that plays into, like, Chief's questions, like, is it going to be worth it?
00:25:46If he can practice with all those guys without playing, then yeah, maybe.
00:25:49But if he has, cannot even practice to gel with all the other guys, yeah, what's the
00:25:53point?
00:25:54Yeah, no, that's, I mean, that, that, that's completely fair.
00:25:56I, again, I, I hate to be reductive, because we're supposed to dive into these things, but
00:26:02I'm just done with Kawhi.
00:26:03It's a, it's a...
00:26:04Kawhi's career is such a weird, weird journey where it looked like he was going to be the
00:26:08man that defined the NBA, and then he got caught up in his own sauce, and the uncle, and,
00:26:14and bolting out of Toronto for the Clippers, and then, and then creating this whole
00:26:18idea of load management, it's like, okay, whatever, dude, I don't, I don't, I don't
00:26:23care, I don't care.
00:26:23I'm on to the, the bigger, better deal, I'm on to the new guys, the, the more exciting
00:26:27moves that have been made in the offseason.
00:26:29Paul George.
00:26:30We'll talk about this, but, nah.
00:26:31The frustrating thing, though, is that Kawhi does not strike me as, like, this shady
00:26:37character that is, that would go out of his way to do something that would jeopardize
00:26:43his entire career, and especially a full season, so, to me, this is, somebody did something
00:26:50for him that, that he didn't realize the, the outcome, and it's frustrating because when
00:26:54Kawhi is playing healthy and playing, you know, his best ball, he's a top five, six player.
00:27:02Which he actually did last season.
00:27:03Exactly.
00:27:04So, we want to see Kawhi, and, you know, he's won championships with two different teams,
00:27:09he's been an MVP with two different teams.
00:27:11We want to see that, this is just a weird situation, that you're right, T-Bob, like,
00:27:16when I hear about it, and I talk about it, I'm like, this doesn't, this isn't exciting
00:27:21news, this is just, like, frustrating news, and nobody has an answer.
00:27:26You know what is exciting?
00:27:28What we saw in the summer league.
00:27:29There you go, yeah.
00:27:30The first Daryl Peterson, AJ DeBansa matchup here, we were just talking about out with the
00:27:36old, in with the new, these two looked fantastic dueling one another, you see the stats,
00:27:41there on the bottom, DeBansa barely ends up edging him out, they win 92-88, AJ looked
00:27:49absolutely like the number one pick last night.
00:27:51Absolutely, and summer league is an interesting thing, because you try not to put too much
00:27:57stock into it on both sides, whether somebody looks good or somebody looks bad, because
00:28:01I remember Wemby played a couple games in summer league, he looked horrible.
00:28:04Yeah.
00:28:04As a guy on the Wizards, Alex Saar, who, I think he went, like, 0 for 15 as a second
00:28:09overall pick a few years ago, now he's a very solid player for the Wizards.
00:28:13It's like, you try not to look too much into these things, but when you do see DeBansa
00:28:18and Peterson, they look just, you know, way above the guys that they're playing.
00:28:23And it's, again, it's kind of an extended version of, like, a college game, but they still
00:28:28look, like, just head and shoulders better than the competition.
00:28:32Now, what about this?
00:28:33The internet noticed this last night, DeBansa getting to the line quite a bit, but a little
00:28:41demonstrative in some of these fouls.
00:28:44People saying, shades of SGA.
00:28:46Remember, this is a man who led the country in free throws last year.
00:28:50Yep.
00:28:51Look, this is what happens.
00:28:52This is what happens.
00:28:53You know, your kids learn from your parents, and DeBansa's come up in the age of foul-baiting,
00:28:58and so, yeah, he might throw a little extra acting in there.
00:29:01Yeah, I mean, this is kind of the new era of players in the NBA.
00:29:06There's a lot of falling down on the ground and maybe a little bit of flopping, but DeBansa,
00:29:10to me, is way more of a physical player than SGA.
00:29:14He is 6'8", he's a massive, chiseled man, and he's really going in and trying to draw contact
00:29:21a lot of the time, and what you see with Shea is a lot of, like, mid-range jumpers where
00:29:25he'll just fall down for whatever reason.
00:29:27I think DeBansa's more, that's just, like, his style, is he's trying to get hit with a
00:29:33body when he goes up to the rim.
00:29:35So, to me, that's just, I think people are just trying to start discussion.
00:29:38All right, so, and then on the Darren Peterson front, because, yeah, like, he loses this game,
00:29:42and there were some things, like, he had nine fouls, he had 10.
00:29:44That's great.
00:29:46I didn't know you could do that.
00:29:47He had a bunch of turnovers, but Peterson's been fantastic through a couple of games,
00:29:53shooting 55% from the field, 44% from three, and he claims he's having a way better time
00:29:58nowadays.
00:30:00That's good, man.
00:30:01Yeah, I'm back out of the front.
00:30:02I wasn't really experiencing that as much as the heck of this.
00:30:05I was off at a time, so just to feel like myself again.
00:30:10Being on the ball, that's what I'm doing, just being a double team with a different
00:30:12coverage, so, yeah, he's a blessing.
00:30:16So, Darren Peterson saying he's feeling like himself once again, the man who is said to
00:30:23be the most talented in the entire country during college.
00:30:25Do you believe him?
00:30:26I do.
00:30:27I think you could just kind of see it in his demeanor there.
00:30:30He did even just seem like he was more excited to be playing basketball, and the whole idea
00:30:37of, you know, he doesn't like basketball is ridiculous.
00:30:41I think that's just a crazy take for somebody who has played basketball their whole, like
00:30:46he played up until he was a child, to right now, if he didn't like basketball, he wouldn't
00:30:51be playing.
00:30:51You don't get to be the number one prospect in the country without loving it and working
00:30:56hard.
00:30:57But he looks really good, and hopefully he's over whatever the health issues and injuries
00:31:04he was having, and again, he is a pick that is based off a lot of potential.
00:31:09He has a high ceiling.
00:31:10So, if he can figure out, you know, some of the things that have plagued him with turnovers
00:31:15and, you know, the injuries, he's going to be an amazing player.
00:31:19And nine fouls?
00:31:20Nine fouls.
00:31:20No, no, but again, I'm just joking, because he's been fantastic through two summer league
00:31:24games now.
00:31:25I didn't know you could do that.
00:31:26All right, so we were going to talk Conor Bredard there.
00:31:29We'll save that for a bit later in the show.
00:31:31I know.
00:31:32I'm not itching to talk about it.
00:31:33Yeah, I know.
00:31:34I know.
00:31:34Tough news for Blackhawks fans.
00:31:36Coming up next, though, stop.
00:31:38Coming up next, though, let's spin the NFL offseason wheel.
00:31:43Time to talk some American football.
00:31:46Football.
00:31:46Here on Wake Up Barstool.
00:31:52Guten tag, and welcome back to Wake Up Barstool here on FS1.
00:31:56It is time.
00:31:58Look, a lot of shows, they're going to create these NFL offseason topics.
00:32:03They're going to swear we've got to talk about this now.
00:32:04We recognize these are evergreen conversations.
00:32:07So we have a giant NFL topic wheel.
00:32:09We're spinning it all summer.
00:32:11Let's go ahead and spin the wheel.
00:32:13Yeah.
00:32:13And see what fate wishes us to debate.
00:32:15Come on with it.
00:32:16Give me something, baby.
00:32:18Give me something good.
00:32:20Most likely to talk more.
00:32:25More likely to take back the NFC North.
00:32:27The Lions or the Packers?
00:32:30I love the Lions so much.
00:32:32Sam Raporto, dude.
00:32:34Losing Terry and Arnold.
00:32:35The Bills are our guy.
00:32:36I love Sam Raporto.
00:32:37But also, Tucker Kraft is our guy.
00:32:39Tucker Kraft is our guy.
00:32:40Oh, this is tough.
00:32:41So is this how you guys judge everything in the NFL now?
00:32:43Just do their tight ends after you went to tight ends?
00:32:46Our guys, dude.
00:32:47It was the most fun to drink beer.
00:32:48What about Loveland and Cole?
00:32:50Yeah, what about Loveland and Cole, dude?
00:32:52I haven't met Loveland or Cole.
00:32:54I didn't meet Komet.
00:32:54I met Loveland, very shy, kind of keeps to himself guy.
00:32:58Very nice guy.
00:32:59Not tight, Chief.
00:33:01But not a Tucker.
00:33:03Not good enough to win the NFC North.
00:33:05Doesn't smash beers enough, dude.
00:33:07Look at me.
00:33:08Hey, man.
00:33:09He's just locked in on football.
00:33:10He's a very good player.
00:33:11I have a take that I don't want to say.
00:33:13Say it then.
00:33:14Go ahead.
00:33:14I think the Lions missed out on their window.
00:33:16Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:33:17Yeah, that feels, I mean, look, the Terry and Arnold News is crazy.
00:33:21Yeah.
00:33:21Right?
00:33:21You lose your life around that STB to, like, a kidnapping, very serious crime.
00:33:26I like what, like, root for Detroit.
00:33:28I love Dan Campbell's, like, philosophy and how he runs a program.
00:33:32But I will agree with you on that.
00:33:34It's just, I just like watching them.
00:33:37They're a very up-tempo offense that is a lot of fun to watch.
00:33:41There's so many weapons they have.
00:33:43Jared Goff's awesome.
00:33:45I really enjoy watching them play.
00:33:47Their offense is just, it's just, it's extraordinary.
00:33:50It is.
00:33:50It's fun to watch.
00:33:51It is.
00:33:51It's electric.
00:33:52But I do agree with you.
00:33:54I feel like if the Packers start the season like they did last season and are able to keep up
00:33:59with that,
00:34:00I mean, they looked unstoppable for a little while.
00:34:02But big games.
00:34:03But big games.
00:34:04You know, they run into the Bears.
00:34:06That's a problem.
00:34:06Big games.
00:34:07They had that.
00:34:08I mean, there is, it's crazy they didn't win that game.
00:34:11I know.
00:34:11I think I was talking to Eddie or, or I was talking to White Sox, someone.
00:34:15And they were just like, I don't know how we won that game.
00:34:19Yeah.
00:34:20Kind of both of them.
00:34:21I know.
00:34:22Yeah.
00:34:22I love seeing football on the screen.
00:34:24Oh, man.
00:34:24Same here.
00:34:26I'm really trying to think about this.
00:34:27And I don't know why.
00:34:28I don't know that I can form a great argument.
00:34:30Because I'm with you all that the Lions Super Bowl window may have closed a bit.
00:34:34But I'm thinking about the Lions playmakers with Gibbs.
00:34:39And I'm going to say Brown.
00:34:40Like you said, Laporta.
00:34:41And like.
00:34:42They also had a ton of injuries on defense.
00:34:44That's what I'm saying.
00:34:44I'm thinking the Lions.
00:34:45If I had to answer who is more likely between the Lions or the Packers, I'm going Lions.
00:34:51Oh, and now I just saw the odds.
00:34:53So, actually, I'm just like saying the most obvious things out there.
00:34:56Yeah.
00:34:57No, I'm leaning.
00:34:58I would answer this Detroit.
00:35:00And Dan Campbell, Super Bowl window or not, he's always going to get the most out of that team.
00:35:04100%.
00:35:05He will maximize that team.
00:35:06How do those odds make you feel, Chief?
00:35:08I'm disrespected.
00:35:09Yeah.
00:35:10The Bears have the third best odds?
00:35:12But hold on.
00:35:13But you do understand, like, how that is crafted, right?
00:35:16Because, like, the Bears won games that, in theory, are not.
00:35:22Like, if we're projecting forward stuff that you should not be able to consistently do.
00:35:26Yeah, I hope they don't have to.
00:35:27I think that's the progression where it's, like, Caleb's good in the first 50 minutes of the game this year.
00:35:34So, it's, like, you don't need these miracles at the end.
00:35:37And they did have a lot of miracles last year.
00:35:39But it's, like, he got better as the year went along.
00:35:41So, if things get cleaned up and I think the defense is going to be much improved this year, then
00:35:46I don't know.
00:35:47I'm shocked that they're the third favorite in there.
00:35:50Because I think they're, on paper, I think that they're better than those others.
00:35:53Looks like you'll have to sprinkle a little bit.
00:35:55I'll be sprinkling.
00:35:56It is a crazy division, top to bottom, though, to be fair.
00:36:00I mean, you could almost make arguments for any team to come out on top there.
00:36:06I don't know.
00:36:07Like, do you think that one roster is, like, clearly more talented than the others?
00:36:12I mean, offensively, the Lions are, I think, head and shoulders above the other two.
00:36:17But defensively, I mean, the Bears are, again, I think the best out of the three.
00:36:23So, it's tough.
00:36:23I mean, I can see any three of them winning NFC North.
00:36:27But I root for the Lions.
00:36:28I like the city of Detroit.
00:36:30I think it's an awesome city and they deserve something.
00:36:33So, I'm rooting for the Lions.
00:36:35But that's, I mean, I'm sitting right here.
00:36:38Yeah, no, that is crazy.
00:36:39How many times have you been to Detroit?
00:36:40It's crazy, dude.
00:36:41Like, five.
00:36:42Oh, really?
00:36:42Yeah.
00:36:43Oh, wow.
00:36:44All right, let's spin the wheel again.
00:36:47It's the Lions.
00:36:48It seems like Lions is the answer, though.
00:36:49Lions are confused.
00:36:50Yeah, I think the Lions is the answer.
00:36:53Joe Burrow?
00:36:54Oh, here we go, Meg.
00:36:55If Joe Burrow stays healthy.
00:36:57Start?
00:36:58Gotta be.
00:36:58Start!
00:36:59If Joe Burrow stays healthy and starts a full season, the Bengals will win a playoff game.
00:37:06I feel like this has to be a big bounce back year for Burrow if he stays healthy.
00:37:10Yeah.
00:37:11Like, I need it for my soul and my heart and I think, yeah, I think he deserves it.
00:37:16I think they'll get on the right track.
00:37:17I don't know about a playoff win, just selfishly because the Steelers.
00:37:21But when Joe Burrow is fully healthy, he is inevitable.
00:37:27Like, he is capable of creating wins even with terrible subpar rosters.
00:37:34But he also, he does that.
00:37:35Oh, but those throws just do it for me every time.
00:37:38Oh, my God.
00:37:39He can be as healthy as an ox, but if his offensive line just gets him, you know, sacked ten
00:37:45times a game.
00:37:46No, again, but yes, but in this hypothetical, he does stay healthy despite the sacks.
00:37:51Right, right.
00:37:51And even the year they made the Super Bowl, he got sacked a ton.
00:37:54Right, you could be healthy and get sacked ten times and go eight and nine.
00:37:58You know?
00:37:59What I'm saying is, I think that Burrow's capable of overcoming all of that.
00:38:03But also, I mean, obviously, I'm biased.
00:38:04I've got Burrow brain.
00:38:05I've got, like, whatever the inverse of Burrow derangement syndrome.
00:38:08I just think that's a very average team.
00:38:10I do, too.
00:38:11I think if at the very much.
00:38:12I think they were average when they made the Super Bowl, though.
00:38:14Yeah.
00:38:15Like, were they any, like, were they markedly better then than they are now?
00:38:19I don't know that I think they were.
00:38:21I think the rest of the AFC probably is, though, is better than it was then.
00:38:26I think it's a deeper league now.
00:38:29I think if you have Joe Burrow and a, if you have a healthy Joe Burrow and a Jamar Chase.
00:38:34Yep.
00:38:34That connection is inevitable.
00:38:36Okay.
00:38:37I feel like they're stealing a second.
00:38:39You have to respect that.
00:38:41Especially, like, that, that connection.
00:38:43This is why I'm out on India.
00:38:44I mean, yeah.
00:38:46Let's enjoy the Steelers, bud.
00:38:48Yeah, exactly.
00:38:51You think the Steelers are going to be the AFC North threat this year?
00:38:55No.
00:38:56Yeah, you're just sitting over there mad.
00:38:57Old geriatric quarterback.
00:38:59And I love McCarthy's press conference, but I don't have a lot of faith in the Steelers.
00:39:03Ravens are a wild card to me.
00:39:05No idea what to make out of them.
00:39:07Yeah.
00:39:08No, actually, you know what?
00:39:09Answering this, like, going through the teams because we know the Browns are going to be a joke.
00:39:11No, I would say the answer to this question is the Bengals will win the division.
00:39:16I think so, too.
00:39:16If Joe Burrow stays healthy, the Bengals will win the division.
00:39:18I think I still got the Ravens.
00:39:19I just, I'm with you on that one.
00:39:21I just don't know what to think about the Ravens right now.
00:39:26Yo, what's up?
00:39:27Got to see if you're on the list here because this is the Wake Up Barstool Club.
00:39:31It's the most exclusive club in all of morning sports television, okay?
00:39:35It's Friday.
00:39:36It's the weekend.
00:39:37You're getting ready to wub at the club.
00:39:39We're going to let you know who's in, who's out.
00:39:42Megan, who's on the list today?
00:39:44Who are we looking at?
00:39:44Who's trying to get in?
00:39:45So, first up, we have a guy that's trying to get in.
00:39:48And I'm not sure if he's going to be able to.
00:39:50He'd have to hobble in the club.
00:39:52Mr. Christian Pulisic.
00:39:56We'll stop him right there.
00:39:57We'll stop him right there.
00:39:58Thank you for representing our country, but you subbed yourself up.
00:40:02Look, Christian, I agree with a lot of what they're saying, but I understand you're hurt,
00:40:09so I'm just saying, look, you just need to rest, okay?
00:40:11You don't need to be in here dancing in the club, dude.
00:40:13If you have to sub yourself out of a World Cup game on U.S. soil, there's no reason that
00:40:19you should be in the line to get into the club.
00:40:21We better not see him trying to get into a club.
00:40:24We'll see.
00:40:24He's got to rest.
00:40:25Yeah, no, that'd be crazy if we actually saw that in your life.
00:40:28I don't want to see any pictures of that.
00:40:29There would not be a worse career move that he could make right now.
00:40:32Take it from us.
00:40:33CP, Uncle CP, chill out.
00:40:35You're out of there.
00:40:36Out of there.
00:40:37Crazy Uncle Nick, man, by the way.
00:40:38Did you see that?
00:40:41He was with either his niece or nephew, and they're like, oh, it's Christian, Uncle CP.
00:40:46Okay, sorry.
00:40:47Who's next?
00:40:47We're going to go with Mr. Pochettino.
00:40:51Mauricio Pochettino.
00:40:52I do like this guy, man.
00:40:53Look, I love Mauricio Pochettino.
00:40:55He looks cool as hell in the Hugo Boss outfits.
00:40:58But why should we let him in?
00:41:01I don't know.
00:41:01I feel like he'd be cool to chill with.
00:41:02They did the same thing.
00:41:03They got to the same place U.S. gets every year.
00:41:05They looked worse in that game.
00:41:08He does seem cool to chill with.
00:41:09Has he done anything to get him not into the club?
00:41:12Yeah.
00:41:12They face planted against Belgium.
00:41:14I want to get a few pints of him and have him tell us what exactly we're going to do.
00:41:18You think we're going to let him in the club here, boys?
00:41:20Pick his brain.
00:41:21Pick his brain.
00:41:22Your lack of consistency between Pulisic and Poch is unbelievable, dude.
00:41:27So Poch is in?
00:41:28Poch is in.
00:41:29I guess Poch is in the club.
00:41:30He's in there.
00:41:30Okay, that's why U.S. soccer will never get to where it wants to be.
00:41:33That's fine.
00:41:34Put him in the club for making the round of 16 and getting your ass kicked.
00:41:37What do you want him to do?
00:41:38Put him in the club.
00:41:39Put him in the club.
00:41:39Right after you just said that the Australia game was terrible, that the Bosnia game meant
00:41:45nothing, and Turkey was a joke.
00:41:46He had like six games with this group.
00:41:48I don't like when my friends fight.
00:41:48You said Paraguay I don't give a damn about.
00:41:51They're 70th in the world.
00:41:52No, Poch is fine.
00:41:53I don't like when my friends fight.
00:41:54Me neither.
00:41:55If Poch wins everywhere except for here, maybe he's not the problem.
00:41:58Oh, that's a good point.
00:42:00All right.
00:42:00Good point.
00:42:01Pochettino, welcome to the club.
00:42:02I do think you're cool as hell.
00:42:03And I have lemons in my kitchen now thanks to you, but still.
00:42:06What do we got next?
00:42:07We have Arthur Fairey, Mr. Wimbledon native, making a magical run as a wildcard qualifier
00:42:14at Wimbledon.
00:42:15Yeah.
00:42:15Mikey, what do you think here?
00:42:16You've been watching Wimbledon.
00:42:17You've been dialed in.
00:42:18Yeah.
00:42:19I love the way he handles the racket.
00:42:20He's in the club.
00:42:22I agree.
00:42:22I agree.
00:42:23Look, okay, let's just be clear.
00:42:25We don't have Liam, our tennis guy on.
00:42:26He's not allowed to watch Wimbledon do a bad bet.
00:42:28But yeah, this guy, like not ranked wildcard, going all the way this far.
00:42:32Absolutely.
00:42:33It's a Cinderella story.
00:42:34It's a great story.
00:42:35It's a great story.
00:42:35I love a Cinderella story.
00:42:36Bring him in the club, kid.
00:42:38Young guy here in the club.
00:42:39Welcome in for the first time.
00:42:41Is this still going on?
00:42:42Yes.
00:42:43Okay.
00:42:44And you know the British are a good time.
00:42:46That's true.
00:42:47It's true.
00:42:48They're a good time in the club.
00:42:48Down to drink some pie.
00:42:49Bring him in the club, man.
00:42:50All right, Arthur, you're in.
00:42:51Who do we got next?
00:42:52Up next, we have the Liberty Bell.
00:42:55All-star game coming up.
00:42:56America 250 rolls on.
00:42:58I mean, it's a Liberty Bell.
00:43:00Has there ever been a more easily in the club contestant ever?
00:43:06Like they say, the Arsenal group is coming up on Fox on Tuesday in Philly.
00:43:10Ring the bell.
00:43:11You're in the club.
00:43:13I bet you.
00:43:14I will also be in Philly for the Home Run Derby.
00:43:16So, I'm really excited about that one.
00:43:19That'll be the third.
00:43:20You got to go to Angela's Cheesesteaks.
00:43:21I can only imagine how many beers a Liberty Bell can slug.
00:43:24Oh.
00:43:25I mean, just.
00:43:26Unlimited.
00:43:26Just imagine if we turn it upside down.
00:43:28That's what I'm saying.
00:43:28You can fill it with beers.
00:43:30But it has a crack in it.
00:43:31It has a crack in it.
00:43:32True.
00:43:32It's never falling out.
00:43:33You can be underneath it.
00:43:34That's fall knowledge.
00:43:34Fall knowledge.
00:43:36You can always get underneath it and, like, you know, let it dribble into your mouth.
00:43:39Chief, would you rather drink out of the Liberty Bell or the Stanley Cup?
00:43:42Stanley Cup.
00:43:43Well, I've had it out of the Stanley Cup, so I'll go Bell.
00:43:45Wow.
00:43:46Wow.
00:43:47Wow.
00:43:50What?
00:43:50What?
00:43:51How did that happen?
00:43:52By the way, I do have to mention this.
00:43:54I do have to mention this.
00:43:57The, right now, Ken Burns just dropped his new documentary, The American Revolution.
00:44:03It's on, the first episode's free, then it's on PBS.
00:44:06But, again, guys, if you like history, history of America, you want to celebrate America,
00:44:10the Liberty Bell, you should go check that out.
00:44:12Well, listen to Uncle Chaps and Donnie's interview with him, too.
00:44:14Yeah.
00:44:15Yeah, they killed it.
00:44:16Chaps getting the very rare.
00:44:19Ken Burns saying it's the most intelligent question he's been asked in the entire tour.
00:44:23It was insane.
00:44:23Sorry.
00:44:24Go ahead.
00:44:24Up next, we're going to go with Tillman.
00:44:26Malik Tillman.
00:44:26Malik Tillman.
00:44:27So, I, I.
00:44:29Free kick merchant.
00:44:30No, not a free kick merchant.
00:44:32Every time the ball's at his feet this entire tournament, he was excellent, I thought.
00:44:35And even on a night when everybody was garbage, he was less garbage.
00:44:39He's the only one that kind of looked like he wanted to be out there.
00:44:41Well, and that actually, like, won a couple individual displays of skill and didn't immediately give the ball away every
00:44:47single time.
00:44:48Chief's looking a little like he doesn't want to let him in.
00:44:50Of course he does, because he just thinks the coach is somehow blameless.
00:44:53Like, just say, you're not letting Malik Tillman in after the tournament he had.
00:44:57He's paying cover, but he can come in.
00:44:59I want to let him in because he looks exactly like one of my old teammates.
00:45:02That is crazy.
00:45:04That's fair.
00:45:04Chief, why would Malik Tillman not get in?
00:45:07He's just not my favorite.
00:45:08We'll leave it there.
00:45:09But he's not my favorite.
00:45:10What is fine?
00:45:10Jacob Magnum.
00:45:11I like a little bit more energy and hustle in my midfield, but he was fine.
00:45:16He had some moments.
00:45:17He can come in.
00:45:17He was fine.
00:45:18He was fine.
00:45:19Okay.
00:45:20Fine.
00:45:20Come on in, I guess.
00:45:22All right.
00:45:23You just, like, we just forgot that the U.S. never scores free kick goals.
00:45:26Like, never has any quality to their shots.
00:45:28Okay.
00:45:29Hey, hey, hey.
00:45:30Hey, he had two nice moments.
00:45:32Me and Chief are fighting by the end of the day.
00:45:33Yeah, y'all are definitely going to fight.
00:45:35We're definitely going to fight.
00:45:35If you guys are in the club together, we're going to need bouncers, man.
00:45:38I feel like if y'all fight, it has to be, like, leg wrestling.
00:45:41I would think that would be a solid matchup.
00:45:43I think T-Bob would absolutely.
00:45:44I think leg wrestling.
00:45:47I don't think many want to leg wrestle with me here.
00:45:49Pretty big thighs.
00:45:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
00:45:52We'll see.
00:45:53All right.
00:45:53What do we got next?
00:45:54Olsen's hat.
00:45:56Yes, Greg Olsen's hat.
00:45:57The infamous Olsen hat he wore to the swift Kelsey.
00:46:01Wendy, let's just get a look at it real quick.
00:46:03Come on, Greg.
00:46:04Is that in the club?
00:46:05Greg can do whatever he wants.
00:46:06Is that in the club?
00:46:07I mean, that's a club hat if I've ever seen one.
00:46:10That's a crazy hat.
00:46:12I feel like he's also going to, like, order, like, a, like, a, like, a, like, just neat.
00:46:19Yeah, it's a tequila hat.
00:46:21I would say it's a tequila adjacent hat.
00:46:23I just want to say, I'm a little surprised me and Kedik were invited to the wedding after
00:46:26Ted University.
00:46:27That's all I'm saying.
00:46:27He did say, apparently, Greg Olsen's saying that he was leaving the bathroom and Tom Cruise
00:46:32was like, that's a sweet hat.
00:46:33Nice.
00:46:35So, do we think Tom Cruise is being sincere, though, or is it just like what you say when
00:46:39you see a hat that crazy and you don't know the person?
00:46:42What would our fits be, Dana?
00:46:43What?
00:46:44Would we go dumb and numb?
00:46:45Yeah, probably.
00:46:45Something like that.
00:46:46Yeah, let him in, though.
00:46:47Get Greg in here.
00:46:48We love Greg more than anybody.
00:46:49So, I do love Greg.
00:46:51Big team guy.
00:46:51I don't know if I'd, I don't think I'd allow that hat in the club.
00:46:54Once again, though, y'all just let everybody in the club.
00:46:56You would be able to spot it?
00:46:57Only Uncle CP can get in the club.
00:46:59Hold on, hold on.
00:46:59Hear me out.
00:47:00If you're looking for Greg Olsen in the club, you would be able to find him 10 out of 10
00:47:04times.
00:47:04You won't have to look for him.
00:47:05You see the hat?
00:47:06That's true.
00:47:06That is true.
00:47:08If you're looking for him to pay for a drink, he's right over there.
00:47:10Put it on his tab.
00:47:11Did that actually hurt you?
00:47:12Hiring the hairline.
00:47:13Yeah, my shoulder's done.
00:47:14Way to go, dude.
00:47:14I hope you're happy, dude.
00:47:16All right, what's next?
00:47:16Last up on the list, it's Blandino.
00:47:21Dean Blandino.
00:47:22He got into the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelsey wedding.
00:47:27I love it.
00:47:27And there's become this sort of scale that we've developed where on one side, it's like
00:47:31Tom Cruise and that's like, and then the last guy in is Dean Blandino.
00:47:36I love it.
00:47:36I love it.
00:47:37If he was good enough to go to the wedding, is he good enough to get in the club?
00:47:41Right this way, sir.
00:47:41I want to hear the stories from the wedding from Dean himself.
00:47:44I met old Dean at the Beer Olympics a couple years ago.
00:47:47He's a great fella.
00:47:48Likes to have a good time.
00:47:50He's probably the most common man we got, so bring him in.
00:47:53We're letting Dean in and we're keeping Christian Pulisic out.
00:47:56I'm just keeping score here.
00:47:57Okay, sure.
00:47:58We're just letting everybody in.
00:47:59Everybody gets to the club.
00:48:00Good air, too.
00:48:01Okay, finally, another guy who was at the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelsey wedding.
00:48:06Nah, don't tell me this guy.
00:48:07Tries to get in every week.
00:48:08Don't tell me it's him.
00:48:09He looked cool as hell the other night with Sierra.
00:48:12It's Russie, baby.
00:48:15I mean...
00:48:15Can't do it, man.
00:48:16Did you see him?
00:48:17Did you see him in Sierra before?
00:48:18Was he the plus one?
00:48:19They look so sick.
00:48:20Was he the plus one?
00:48:22No, they look so sick.
00:48:23Can't do it, man.
00:48:23No, bro.
00:48:23It's not a pity about it.
00:48:25I mean, you bring Sierra to Bear.
00:48:26I think she's bringing him.
00:48:28She's bringing him.
00:48:29Yeah, that's fine.
00:48:30I'm just saying.
00:48:31Like, they're a package deal.
00:48:33If we want Sierra in here, we got to let Russ in here.
00:48:35Guys, we let too many guys in the club.
00:48:37We let too many people in the club.
00:48:38We're still keeping Russ out?
00:48:40Yep.
00:48:40Russ is out.
00:48:40But Dino got in and Russ gets left out.
00:48:43Right.
00:48:44That's the way it's...
00:48:45That's the way it's...
00:48:45That's one of those glasses reflections.
00:48:47All right, there it is.
00:48:48It's his phone.
00:48:49He's taking a selfie.
00:48:50You got to have some rules and respect at some level.
00:48:52This is crazy.
00:48:54This is crazy.
00:48:55I mean, Russell Wilson.
00:48:56He's been to the club enough in his day.
00:48:58Y'all run an unsuccessful club here.
00:49:00You're part of it.
00:49:00There it is, guys.
00:49:01That's who's...
00:49:02Yeah, I know, and I'm ashamed to be.
00:49:03That's who's in.
00:49:04That's who's out this week.
00:49:05Coming up next, it's time to begin our Summer Sandwich Series.
00:49:11Okay, smash or pass.
00:49:12We got playing games.
00:49:14We got to decide.
00:49:15One seed, the 32 sandwich bracket is set.
00:49:19Let's get into it.
00:49:25Broken thingy.
00:49:27What's happening, y'all?
00:49:28Welcome back to Smash or Pass.
00:49:30Okay, and we're starting a new series here.
00:49:32This is the Summer of Sandwiches, the Summer Sandwich Series, if you will.
00:49:37The Triple S.
00:49:38It's a tournament that many have wanted to win, but by the end, there can only be one.
00:49:43On the docket today, guys, this is going to be a 32-team bracket.
00:49:47Yep.
00:49:47Okay?
00:49:47We're not revealing the full bracket today.
00:49:49We have four play-in games that are going to establish eight seeds.
00:49:53Then, as a group, we're going to get together, and we're going to find our one-seed sandwiches.
00:49:58We're going to come up with four of those.
00:49:58I would just like to preempt this by saying, preempt the word?
00:50:03Yep, that was perfect.
00:50:03Perfectly used.
00:50:04Perfectly used.
00:50:05I grew up in a town called Sandwich, so I'm qualified for this.
00:50:09Sandwich, Massachusetts?
00:50:10Yes.
00:50:10I love that.
00:50:11Wow.
00:50:11You didn't know that?
00:50:12And then my maiden name is Sando, which is another name for sandwiches.
00:50:17Sando.
00:50:17Okay, so we have an expert panel.
00:50:21Mikey, what's your qualifications?
00:50:22Oh, I'm fat.
00:50:23Yeah, me too.
00:50:24That's how I'm getting in here as well.
00:50:25It's white jacket, half buttoned up.
00:50:27It's crazy.
00:50:28It just makes me feel even fatter.
00:50:29Stay puffed marshmallow, man.
00:50:30Yeah.
00:50:31All right.
00:50:32We're going to start with our first play-in game.
00:50:34It's Elvis' favorite sandwich ever.
00:50:37Peanut butter and banana versus a classic ham and cheese.
00:50:41I've never tried a peanut butter and banana.
00:50:43I'm going to go ham and cheese just because you can't really go wrong with that.
00:50:47Right.
00:50:47Safe play.
00:50:48And you can make it into like a melt.
00:50:50You can make it raw.
00:50:52You can put some chips on it.
00:50:54Ham and cheese.
00:50:54I'm going ham and cheese.
00:50:55Ham and cheese.
00:50:56Yeah, look, shout out to Elvis.
00:50:57And I think this is like a Southern thing as well.
00:50:59Maybe an older generation Southern thing, but you can't beat a classic ham and cheese.
00:51:03No, welcome to the show, ham and cheese.
00:51:05Sorry, bud.
00:51:06All right, so ham and cheese, our first eight seed.
00:51:07You are in.
00:51:08Next up, another couple of classics here.
00:51:11A bologna sandwich versus pimento cheese.
00:51:14I'm not a big fan of either.
00:51:16Me neither.
00:51:17Another thing you can do with bologna is you can throw it in a pan.
00:51:20Just give me the meats.
00:51:21Give me the meats.
00:51:22I think I'll have to go bologna on this one just because pimento cheese can sometimes just
00:51:27be too much.
00:51:28It's a bunch of bologna.
00:51:30I think I'm going to go bologna.
00:51:33I've eaten way more bologna sandwiches in my life, but I feel pimento cheese is objectively
00:51:38a better sandwich.
00:51:39What about you, Chief?
00:51:40I'm going bologna, too.
00:51:41Tie goes to the meat.
00:51:42I'm not super excited about either one of them.
00:51:44Wow.
00:51:45Bologna taking it home, knocking out the Masters.
00:51:48So far, fundamentals winning the day, right?
00:51:52Elvis's favorite sandwich out.
00:51:53The Masters' favorite sandwich out.
00:51:56Classic bologna and ham and cheese making it through.
00:51:58Next up.
00:51:59What is a hot brown?
00:52:00I don't know.
00:52:00So this is, I don't know.
00:52:02We were told this is a Kentucky sandwich, and it's kind of like an open-faced turkey sandwich
00:52:08with like bacon and tomato.
00:52:09I mean, it sounds great.
00:52:11And cheese.
00:52:11Whoa!
00:52:12And cheese, obviously.
00:52:13You throw bacon on that.
00:52:14Pork tenderloin.
00:52:15I don't think about pork tenderloin as a sandwich that much, if I'm being completely honest.
00:52:19No.
00:52:20I think that the hot brown sounds like a sandwich.
00:52:22Like, it sounds like something I would go to like a sandwich shop and like that.
00:52:25Yeah.
00:52:25Now, I'm being told that this is like a breaded, fried pork tenderloin sandwich, if that makes
00:52:30any difference.
00:52:30I think I'm still going to go with the classic.
00:52:32I think I'm still going to go with the hot brown.
00:52:33The hot brown.
00:52:34The bacon.
00:52:34I like pork tenderloin, though.
00:52:36Are we going to knock hot brown for being open-faced, or are we allowed open-faced to
00:52:39call themselves a sandwich?
00:52:40Open-faced is very soft, from a sandwich perspective.
00:52:43In what way?
00:52:44It's just, you got, a sandwich is bang.
00:52:47Bread, bread, bang.
00:52:48That's true.
00:52:48You kind of have to eat it with a fork and knife.
00:52:50Yeah, it's almost a mess.
00:52:52It's actually really soft.
00:52:53Does hot brown get disqualified because it's a fork and knife?
00:52:56But no, if you think about like a lot of our sandwiches down south, like have to
00:53:00be open-faced because of how like much they stuffed them full.
00:53:03But if you really want to, you can pick it up, you can close it, you can stuff it in.
00:53:08I think there's only one way to solve this.
00:53:10Guys, can we go ahead and get some hot browns delivered to the studio immediately?
00:53:13We're going to have to put this on test.
00:53:14Yes, please.
00:53:14No, they're not going to do it.
00:53:15No, I wish we did.
00:53:18I'll go hot brown just because I have like no point of reference for really like a pork tenderloin sandwich.
00:53:25I'm sure a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich would be fantastic.
00:53:27However, my brain is going classic right now.
00:53:30Yeah.
00:53:30With, you know, we already have ham and cheese and bologna, so I'm going to go hot brown.
00:53:33Also, hot brown though.
00:53:34We'll see if that open face comes back to bite them in the end.
00:53:37Now, we've got another couple of uniquely made sandwiches in the final play-in.
00:53:41A gyro, which is...
00:53:43Is that considered a sandwich?
00:53:45I think a wrap is a sandwich adjacent enough.
00:53:48So like is a hot dog a sandwich?
00:53:50Oh, God, here we go.
00:53:52I don't have the brain power this morning.
00:53:53I think a hot dog is in the eye of the beholder.
00:53:57If you say it's a sandwich, it can be a sandwich.
00:54:00If you say it's not, it's not.
00:54:02I'm just curious.
00:54:03It's a quantum food that exists in multiple states at once.
00:54:07So a gyro versus Monte Cristo.
00:54:09Guys, this is a no point.
00:54:10And of course, a Monte Cristo is like deep fried, right?
00:54:13Is that...
00:54:13Does it have the powdered sugar in the jelly or is that a croque madame and croque monk?
00:54:17I don't know what a Monte Cristo is.
00:54:17I think it does have the powdered sugar.
00:54:20I'm not positive on that.
00:54:21This is euro.
00:54:22This is a no-brainer euro.
00:54:23Okay, it is the powdered sugar in raspberry jam.
00:54:25Confirmed.
00:54:25Euro is going to make a deep run.
00:54:27Yeah, I love euro.
00:54:29I think it's fantastic.
00:54:30Euros are so...
00:54:31Have you had a Monte Cristo?
00:54:33No.
00:54:34I don't think...
00:54:34But I'm just saying, but just think about this.
00:54:36It's like a delicious ham and cheese sandwich...
00:54:39It's sweet and savory.
00:54:39...that they then deep fry and put powdered sugar on top...
00:54:43I'm going to do Dana Tries today.
00:54:44I'm going to do Dana Tries today.
00:54:46It's a lot.
00:54:47It'll knock you on your ass.
00:54:49It's like a hangover.
00:54:51It's a little too much, but a couple bites are pretty freaking fantastic.
00:54:55A gyro thing, it's gyro.
00:54:57Okay, Monte Cristo, sorry I tried.
00:54:59So the final count is not Monte Cristo.
00:55:02It's ham and cheese, bologna, hot brown, and gyro becoming our eight seeds.
00:55:09They win the play-ins.
00:55:10Congrats, guys.
00:55:11Congrats.
00:55:12Those are going to be the eight seeds of the 32 tournament.
00:55:14Now, you've got to come up with one seeds.
00:55:16Chief, what's your nomination?
00:55:18I'll go local.
00:55:19I'm just going to take an Italian beef.
00:55:21Italian beef, hot.
00:55:23It's a good summer meal.
00:55:24It's a good winter meal, too.
00:55:25Get one at a tailgate.
00:55:27I love an Italian.
00:55:27This is like a classic Purdue one seed here to me.
00:55:30Oh, that's...
00:55:31Sure, whatever.
00:55:32They played well enough in the regular season to be the one seed.
00:55:35I have no faith that they're actually going to go anywhere.
00:55:40I think I'll go with the fried shrimp, oh boy.
00:55:42Well, I mean, I'm with you there, but hold on.
00:55:45First, we've got to vote on...
00:55:46First, we've got to vote on the...
00:55:47Wait, so I was just saying collective for the one seeds?
00:55:49Yes.
00:55:49Yes, we have to decide as a group.
00:55:51It's got to be a three out of five.
00:55:52Cheese steak?
00:55:52DeMossi rules majority vote.
00:55:53Cheese steaks are great.
00:55:54Very similar to an Italian beef.
00:55:55Yeah.
00:55:56It's not quite as...
00:55:56Well, hold on.
00:55:57Let's vote on beef.
00:55:58Is beef a one seed or not?
00:55:59Oh, I love a deli Italian.
00:56:01Deli Italian is a very...
00:56:03Yeah, I do love a deli Italian, too.
00:56:04It's versatile.
00:56:05It's always good.
00:56:06High floor.
00:56:07Yep.
00:56:07I think a deli Italian is a no-brainer number one seed.
00:56:11A chicken parm sandwich.
00:56:12Oh, yeah.
00:56:13Also delicious.
00:56:14I love a chicken parm.
00:56:15I do.
00:56:15Deli Italian, I think, has to be.
00:56:17Deli Italian feels...
00:56:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:56:19I think we're in consensus there.
00:56:21Deli Italian...
00:56:21Okay, our first one seed is decided.
00:56:23Deli Italian.
00:56:24Deli Italian.
00:56:24Okay, so I'll just...
00:56:25Let's have a conversation now, Meg.
00:56:26I apologize for stopping you.
00:56:28Because I agree.
00:56:28Fried shrimp po' boy would be an easy one seed for me.
00:56:30Yeah.
00:56:30I mean, they're just so good.
00:56:32I think it's, like, one of my top five favorite foods of all time.
00:56:35Cubano.
00:56:36I love a Cuban.
00:56:37I don't think it's a one seed, though.
00:56:39Ruben, me neither.
00:56:39I'm just tossing.
00:56:40Love a Ruben.
00:56:40Doesn't feel like a one seed to me.
00:56:42See, I would much rather...
00:56:43No disrespect to the Italian beef, but I would rather, like, a debris roast beef po' boy
00:56:47every single time.
00:56:48This is, like, a reach.
00:56:49Oh, dude.
00:56:50A little surf and jerk.
00:56:51I think we toss a cheesesteak on there.
00:56:53A little roast beef and fried shrimp.
00:56:54I think we toss a cheesesteak on there.
00:56:56Yeah, I think cheesesteak.
00:56:57Yeah, yeah.
00:56:57Philly cheesesteak.
00:56:58It has to be a good cheesesteak.
00:56:59Yeah, from Philly, Angelo's or Skinny Joey's or D'Alessandro's.
00:57:05Which one would Big Dom say?
00:57:07Big Dom would probably say Angelo's.
00:57:09Okay.
00:57:09We'll give you a po' boy.
00:57:11Okay.
00:57:11Yeah.
00:57:12Okay, well, let's make sure about this, because right now we have an Italian deli.
00:57:16An Italian deli sandwich is one one seed.
00:57:22We're saying an Angelo's Philly cheesesteak is going to be, or just a good Philly cheesesteak
00:57:26will be another number one seed.
00:57:31And then if we already go fried shrimp, we only have one spot left.
00:57:33Yeah, take your po' boy, dude.
00:57:35Take it.
00:57:35Take it.
00:57:36What about like a-
00:57:37Some southern representation on there.
00:57:38Just letting you know, it's probably going to get upset early.
00:57:40Then we'll have Lil Wayne.
00:57:41Lil Wayne will vote for-
00:57:43Wayne would probably go po' boy.
00:57:44Yeah.
00:57:45Absolutely.
00:57:45Yeah, I mean, what, Mikey?
00:57:47No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:57:48I'm just saying, like-
00:57:49You don't think it gets to be in there.
00:57:50You need like the good bread, like the good-
00:57:51I haven't had enough for it to be a number one.
00:57:54No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:57:55Put the fries on the sandwich, Dave.
00:57:57Did I mention that?
00:57:58I'm from Pittsburgh.
00:57:59I didn't mention Primanti's once.
00:58:00What about like a buffalo chicken sandwich?
00:58:02What about like a fried chicken sandwich?
00:58:04Classic BLT.
00:58:05Oh, I love BLT.
00:58:06I made those yesterday.
00:58:07Yeah, BLT.
00:58:07I could have BLT as a one seed.
00:58:09I would have zero problem with that.
00:58:10Let's do BLT for one.
00:58:11BLT.
00:58:12I'm obsessed with perfect BLT.
00:58:14Wait, wait, wait, is it like a cheeseburger or something?
00:58:15French dip, chicken parm, none of these are all little-
00:58:17Oh, French dip's a good one too.
00:58:17Is it cheeseburger or a sandwich?
00:58:19I'm hungry.
00:58:19We're not putting cheeseburger on the sandwich list just for this,
00:58:22because cheeseburger could almost be its own.
00:58:23French dip is a good one.
00:58:25Cheeseburger and what?
00:58:25I don't really like French dips.
00:58:26It'd be a cheeseburger on here.
00:58:27I think BLT is good.
00:58:29As long as it's good.
00:58:29Like if you get like a good tomato-
00:58:30Is that our four?
00:58:31Crusty lettuce, you have a ton of almost curse, ton of bacon.
00:58:34A lot of bacon.
00:58:35But like cooked perfectly where it melts in your mouth.
00:58:38I like that.
00:58:38Carson, what about this?
00:58:39A lot of mayo on that.
00:58:40Yes.
00:58:41Brown candy.
00:58:41A lot of mayo, wouldn't that be?
00:58:42Good BLT.
00:58:43A lot of mayo, wouldn't that be?
00:58:45Great BLT at crown candy.
00:58:46They give you about half a pound of bacon to a pound on French dip.
00:58:49I made BLT in the office yesterday.
00:58:52All right, let's go.
00:58:53You did?
00:58:53Yeah.
00:58:54Oh, wow.
00:58:54I missed it.
00:58:55That sucks.
00:58:55Sit down, cheesehead.
00:58:56Okay, so the for sure consensus, Italian deli sub.
00:59:01Yep.
00:59:02BLT.
00:59:03Yep.
00:59:03Uh, Philly cheesesteak.
00:59:05Well, we're giving you a po' boy just because we're-
00:59:07And then we're going to do that?
00:59:08We're going to do that?
00:59:09We're being good friends.
00:59:10All right.
00:59:11I just wish you guys would be able to have, like, a good one down south.
00:59:14Like, it really is dependent on, like, the bread, the quality of the shrimp, how many shrimp are on there.
00:59:19I believe it.
00:59:20You're saying low floor then, huh?
00:59:22No, if we get to say Angelo's cheesesteak, we get to say the best version of the fried shrimp.
00:59:26But, I mean, all these sandwiches at their best is what we're saying.
00:59:29I believe it.
00:59:30You got to have that Leidenheimer's bread.
00:59:32Yes.
00:59:32Give some southern representation.
00:59:34All right.
00:59:35So, there you go, dude.
00:59:36The four one-seeds are set.
00:59:38The eight-seeds are set.
00:59:39Coming up next week, we'll reveal the bracket as a whole, and we'll go quarter by quarter, region-right region,
00:59:45to finish this thing out.
00:59:47Very excited, who ends up taking home the inaugural Wake Up Barstool Summer Sandwich Series.
00:59:52I know you all are going to be waiting with bated breath to figure out who's going to win that
00:59:58one.
00:59:58All right.
00:59:58Coming up next, guys, let's head back to the pitch.
01:00:01As we got Fox Sports' Tyler Terrence, he's been calling games play-by-play in this 2026 World Cup.
01:00:06Let's get his perspective on the tournament as a whole.
01:00:08Who's going to win?
01:00:09What do we make of the U.S. next on Wake Up?
01:00:13I got to go pee.
01:00:19What's happening, y'all?
01:00:20Welcome back to Wake Up Barstool.
01:00:21The World Cup rolling along today.
01:00:24We got another great matchup.
01:00:26Belgium and Spain going to try to punch their ticket to the semifinal.
01:00:29And right now, it is our pleasure to be joined by a man who has been climbing the ranks.
01:00:34He used to be the voice of the Chicago Fire for a few years.
01:00:37He breaks through with Fox Sports, who have play-by-play in the Gold Cup.
01:00:40And now our guy called six different World Cup games in all three countries.
01:00:45Fox Sports' Tyler Terrence, thank you for joining the show.
01:00:48I appreciate you guys.
01:00:50Thanks for having me, man.
01:00:50Big fan of the show and pumped to be on here.
01:00:52So let's start.
01:00:54Before we get into all the tournament itself, the players itself, I want to start with you.
01:00:59Because again, you're someone who has grinded your way up the ranks,
01:01:03calling hundreds of games on lower levels, becoming the voice of the fire.
01:01:06Now you're calling World Cup games the best players in the entire world.
01:01:10What has this journey been like over these last few years?
01:01:14It's been unreal.
01:01:15And to think that it started out, especially during COVID and Major League Soccer
01:01:19and calling games in an empty soldier field
01:01:21and then going to, you know, packed stadiums at the World Cup
01:01:24and having to pick my head up sometimes and remembering that I'm at the World Cup.
01:01:28This isn't just a, you know, USL game that I used to call back in the day.
01:01:32But no, it's been amazing.
01:01:34And Fox has been awesome.
01:01:35And it's been really cool to grow with them
01:01:37and to just be a part of what, like, you know,
01:01:40everybody's calling the greatest World Cup of all time.
01:01:43Certainly the biggest that we've ever experienced.
01:01:44And we're shattering records in terms of social views and views on games.
01:01:49So it's been awesome.
01:01:50Yeah, greatest World Cup of all time, at least in part, probably a major part,
01:01:54is because the superstars are carrying the day.
01:01:57I mean, we entered this World Cup with the all-time scoring record being 16 goals.
01:02:01And now you've got Messi sitting on 21 and Mbappe's up to 20.
01:02:05Let's talk about France.
01:02:06We broke it down earlier.
01:02:08I mean, all the talk of the offense, but the defense has been great as well.
01:02:10Like, they seem inevitable at this point.
01:02:13In your mind, who's the biggest threat?
01:02:16Or is there anybody that can challenge the French?
01:02:20I don't think that there's anybody that can challenge them.
01:02:22It feels like we're watching, like, the 2015-16 Warriors.
01:02:24We're like, we already know what's going to happen when we get to June, right?
01:02:27And I feel like I already know what's going to happen when we get to New Jersey, New York Stadium.
01:02:31But if you're thinking about who could potentially challenge them the most,
01:02:34I think that it's Spain, because, you know, the France game yesterday,
01:02:39and I had a buddy text me, and they were like,
01:02:40this just didn't look like it had any intensity to it, the game against Morocco.
01:02:43And I said, that's what France does to you.
01:02:45They suffocate you.
01:02:45They make sure that you're not on the ball.
01:02:47And it looks like they're having a walk in the park,
01:02:48and they're just having fun with it by the end of the game,
01:02:50even what is a two-goal game late on.
01:02:53You know, Spain, what they're able to do in possession
01:02:56and what they're able to do in terms of the repress and suffocating you,
01:02:59like, I think that they're the one who can challenge them the most.
01:03:03And even if it were to get to a France and Argentina final again,
01:03:07we've seen Argentina now struggle with both Cape Verde and Egypt.
01:03:10If they're struggling with those two,
01:03:11and maybe they're just waiting to get back to this moment
01:03:14that they're going to have with France in the final on July 19th.
01:03:17But I just don't see anybody stopping France right now.
01:03:20They're just an absolute wagon, and nobody can stop this guy Mbappe.
01:03:24Hopefully he's healthy.
01:03:25But even if he's not, I'd still like France to potentially win it
01:03:28with Dembele and Alise leaving the line.
01:03:29Hey, Tyler, myself and Mike Kadick over here,
01:03:33we're more of the American football guys.
01:03:35And I haven't found myself watching too much soccer or football
01:03:41up until this point.
01:03:42But I've actually been really, really, like,
01:03:46keyed in on the World Cup this year.
01:03:48So what is it about this tournament that is starting to draw
01:03:51on people like myself that may have not watched the sport before,
01:03:54but now I'm like, I can't turn off the TV?
01:03:59Well, you tell me, because I don't know what it's like to be that kind.
01:04:02Like, you know, I've been growing up with soccer my whole life,
01:04:04and I have plenty of friends who are doing the same thing.
01:04:06I got family members texting me, you know,
01:04:08at the end of the Bosnia-Herzegovina U.S. Men's National Team game,
01:04:11being like, now I can breathe as if they've been some sort of diehard
01:04:14U.S. Men's National Team fan their entire life.
01:04:16I'm like, Aunt Sue, you haven't watched a lick of soccer
01:04:19in 60 years that you've been on this planet.
01:04:22But, no, I think that this tournament and sort of the way that it brings
01:04:28not just our country together, but the whole world together, right?
01:04:32Like, seeing, I mean, I was down in Mexico for four games,
01:04:35seeing Mexican fans welcoming South Korean fans
01:04:38and they're ripping shots of tequila together.
01:04:40Like, that's what this tournament's all about.
01:04:42Like, the Tartan Army taking over Boston, drinking that town dry,
01:04:45which is difficult to do because that's not exactly a town
01:04:47that doesn't hate their alcohol.
01:04:48So, like, this whole tournament is just really about welcoming
01:04:52in the entire world and everybody getting to experience Americana,
01:04:56getting to experience Mexico, getting to experience Canada.
01:04:58But then it's also, it's the highest stakes.
01:05:01And when we're doing things every four years,
01:05:02the same way that we get behind the Olympics
01:05:04and we're, you know, watching more curling
01:05:06than we ever have in our life before,
01:05:08it's because these athletes have been doing this
01:05:10for their entire life and they wait for this moment.
01:05:12And what we love in this society nowadays
01:05:14is high-stakes sporting events.
01:05:16And it doesn't get any bigger than the World Cup
01:05:18and getting to see so many teams be able to do it.
01:05:20And all the stars, like we talked about, are showing out,
01:05:22which doesn't hurt.
01:05:23Yeah, and you went to all three countries
01:05:26across six different games.
01:05:27What was the best stadium atmosphere
01:05:29and what was the best, like, area
01:05:32in terms of fan involvement?
01:05:35Yeah, so I would say the best stadium atmosphere,
01:05:37and I don't know, I mean, hopefully I'll get to top it
01:05:40as, you know, in following World Cups
01:05:42or whatever throughout my career.
01:05:43But that Columbia-DR Congo game in the atmosphere
01:05:45for the Colombians, I've never seen anything like that before.
01:05:49Like, Mo and Dew, my broadcast partner,
01:05:50his watch was going off the entire game
01:05:52saying, like, you need to get out of this loud atmosphere,
01:05:54loud environment.
01:05:56Like, I swear to God, I told my wife when I got home,
01:05:59and, like, it's not just because I'm not listening
01:06:00to her watching the games.
01:06:01Like, she's trying to call out my name a couple times.
01:06:03I'm starting to go deaf, even if it happens
01:06:05by the age of 40, it's going to be because
01:06:06of that game specifically.
01:06:09In terms of a city, Vancouver is unbelievable,
01:06:13and the way that the fans from all over the world
01:06:16took over the streets of Vancouver,
01:06:17they shut down Granville, right in downtown Vancouver,
01:06:20which was incredible, and, like, that city in general
01:06:23I think is one of the coolest cities in the world,
01:06:25and let alone when it's welcoming in nations
01:06:28from any quarter of the globe.
01:06:30So it was tough to pick them.
01:06:32I also was dealing with a couple of bouts
01:06:34in Montezuma's Revenge in Mexico,
01:06:35so maybe that marked my experience down there,
01:06:37but that was awesome, too.
01:06:40Tyler, like Dana said, I'm not the biggest soccer guy,
01:06:42but I love this country, and I love watching
01:06:45athletes compete for the country.
01:06:46What do you make of the Pulisic injuries
01:06:49and how he subbed himself out?
01:06:52Should he have, I don't know, what's your take on that?
01:06:56I'll tell you what, man, like,
01:06:58and I know Colin's been talking about it a lot,
01:07:00and I love the fact that everybody's holding him accountable
01:07:03and everybody's holding this team accountable
01:07:05for what was just an absolute issue, right?
01:07:08Like, there's no other way to phrase it.
01:07:11As far as Christian's concerned,
01:07:12I think that he caught a little bit more flack
01:07:15than he should have with the interview
01:07:16because he was just simply answering the question
01:07:17from Jenny about, like, how does the ankle feel,
01:07:20and he's just saying, now I can have time to rest.
01:07:21I don't think that that was a larger commentary
01:07:23on sort of, like, his participation
01:07:25and how the tournament wound up and everything like that.
01:07:27In terms of him getting subbed out,
01:07:30this is nothing new with Christian,
01:07:31and I'm not saying that because, like,
01:07:33he doesn't care or anything like that,
01:07:34but the dude gets hurt a lot,
01:07:36and anybody who's been following his career
01:07:39knows that, like, he'll put in six months
01:07:42of, like, really, really good football.
01:07:43He was leading Serie A in goal contributions
01:07:46up until December,
01:07:48and then come January 1,
01:07:49his first goal for any team, club, or country
01:07:52is a week before the tournament starts,
01:07:54and then he usually gets hurt after that,
01:07:56and that's just sort of been his cycle.
01:07:57Like, I think it's really frustrating,
01:07:59and I'm still disappointed,
01:08:01and I've woken up every morning since that game
01:08:03where I'm just like, God, I can't believe
01:08:05we had our worst performance
01:08:07on the biggest stage that this country
01:08:08has ever seen, arguably, since 2002.
01:08:11It's just so frustrating,
01:08:12and for him to be in the middle of it
01:08:13and also just not perform
01:08:15makes it even more frustrating
01:08:17and ask the question,
01:08:18should he be the guy that we're building around
01:08:19for the next World Cup?
01:08:21Now, and then, so that's the question
01:08:22of who we should be building around,
01:08:24but what about the boss?
01:08:26Who wears Hugo Boss?
01:08:28Is he still the man
01:08:29who should be leading said building?
01:08:32You know, I heard Doug come on here
01:08:34and as well as Greg,
01:08:36and I agree with Doug, right?
01:08:37Like, I just think that you know
01:08:40that if you do put another contract
01:08:41in front of him,
01:08:42and let's say it's for four and a half years, right,
01:08:44that takes us through 2030
01:08:45in the next World Cup,
01:08:46every single major European job
01:08:48that comes along,
01:08:49that dude is going to be throwing
01:08:50his name in the ring,
01:08:51and we don't need a situation
01:08:52where he's jumping ship
01:08:54in the middle of the World Cup cycle.
01:08:55I want somebody who's going to be committed
01:08:57for all four years,
01:08:58and I want somebody who's going to be the coach
01:08:59from the moment that you say goodbye to Mauricio
01:09:01until the moment that the Spain-Portugal-Morocco
01:09:03World Cup happens in 2030.
01:09:05I also think that from a competitive standpoint,
01:09:07while we look the best that we ever have
01:09:10in the games leading up to Belgium,
01:09:12ask anybody in this industry,
01:09:13we hired Mauricio for that Belgium game,
01:09:17and we had our worst game of the tournament.
01:09:19Like, and I know that that's such a fine line,
01:09:23and thank you for pulling that up.
01:09:24I appreciate it.
01:09:26And I was angry,
01:09:27and I'd had a couple of beverages,
01:09:28but I still stand by it.
01:09:30I saw it the next morning,
01:09:31and I was like,
01:09:31I'm not deleting it.
01:09:32I still stand by it.
01:09:33So, wait, give us a little B.J. Callahan bio then.
01:09:38I love B.J. Callahan,
01:09:40and he's one of the two interim coaches
01:09:42who helped out in the middle of the Greg transition
01:09:45in between 2022 and Copa America and that stuff.
01:09:48So, B.J. Callahan has stepped in
01:09:50as the head coach of Nashville
01:09:51for the past almost two years now,
01:09:53and he's done wonders with them.
01:09:55I've covered them in MLS.
01:09:56I've covered them in CONCACAF Champions Cup.
01:09:57They play a really fun, exciting brand of football.
01:10:00B.J. is a guy who has seen
01:10:02every square inch of the American soccer pyramid.
01:10:05His head coaching experience is limited,
01:10:06but he seems to be a great dude.
01:10:08The players really get along with him,
01:10:10and he's just a guy who gets it.
01:10:11Like, I really think that he gets it,
01:10:13and if you were to give him that job,
01:10:16he would bleed for it.
01:10:17And let's not forget, gentlemen,
01:10:19let's not forget,
01:10:20the proof is in the pudding
01:10:21as far as foreign coaches are concerned
01:10:23at the World Cup.
01:10:24There's still not a single foreign coach
01:10:25who has won a World Cup,
01:10:26and until that happens,
01:10:27I feel like we kind of just need
01:10:29to have an American coach,
01:10:30and for my money right now,
01:10:31I think B.J. would be the best
01:10:33sort of plug-and-play option for us.
01:10:34Now, we talked about this the other day
01:10:37with some of our more footy-forward panelists,
01:10:40and they were getting themselves
01:10:42into a tizzy about Pep,
01:10:45about the potential of Pep.
01:10:46And we know that one of the reasons
01:10:48why you got pot is because
01:10:49the billionaires came together.
01:10:51You had a massive offer.
01:10:53They're telling me,
01:10:54well, Pep doesn't want to coach club anymore,
01:10:55that he loves America,
01:10:56he loves New York City.
01:10:57Have you allowed yourself to fantasize,
01:11:00or would you think that would maybe be an ill fit?
01:11:04No, I've not allowed myself to fantasize about that,
01:11:06but you also have to understand I'm a Jets fan,
01:11:08so I don't fantasize really about anything.
01:11:10Yeah, that's true.
01:11:11I'm just a beaten-down soul.
01:11:13So you pick up the phone,
01:11:16but he ain't coming.
01:11:17It's just not happening,
01:11:18because that would mean that for the next four years,
01:11:21he's going to be coaching international football.
01:11:23Like, what do we know about Pep?
01:11:24This guy loves to be touching the grass,
01:11:26loves to be out on the field with the guys,
01:11:28and he needs to be coaching all the time.
01:11:30And you just don't get that way
01:11:31with international football.
01:11:32And it's not a knock on it,
01:11:33it's just a fact.
01:11:34I think that you, without a doubt,
01:11:36if you're, you know,
01:11:37and we also have to sort out
01:11:38who's leading the U.S. men's national team
01:11:40from a sporting director's standpoint
01:11:41into the next World Cup cycle.
01:11:42We have to figure that position out
01:11:44before we hire the coach.
01:11:45But whoever comes in,
01:11:47you pick up the phone,
01:11:48you ask Pep if he's interested,
01:11:49he'll say no,
01:11:50and then you move on to the American coach.
01:11:52But, yeah, I can't get too excited
01:11:54about the prospect that he's going to be available
01:11:56because I just don't think it's going to happen.
01:11:58So, I can't guarantee that we know
01:12:00who the next coach is going to be
01:12:02or how we're going to do,
01:12:02but I feel comfortable, Tyler.
01:12:04I will guarantee the New York Jets
01:12:05get an interception next year.
01:12:08I'm going to guarantee this fall
01:12:09you get one interception.
01:12:11So, congratulations.
01:12:12I'm not taking it.
01:12:13I don't care.
01:12:14It's going to be another miserable season.
01:12:15We'll win some games we're not supposed to,
01:12:17and then we'll end up
01:12:17with another mediocre draft pick.
01:12:19But I appreciate whatever.
01:12:20I don't care.
01:12:22Interceptions, come on, man.
01:12:23It's just, the bar is so low.
01:12:25But I'm a Knicks fan, too,
01:12:26so I've got that to hang my hat on
01:12:28for the next 52 years
01:12:29until it happens again.
01:12:30All right, Tyler, what about this?
01:12:31Let's get into some of the games
01:12:32that are still left to be played.
01:12:33Spain, Belgium today.
01:12:34A lot of people kind of saying
01:12:35that this could look like
01:12:36USA, Belgium only flipped.
01:12:39What's your take on how today's going to go?
01:12:42I don't think it's going to be flipped.
01:12:43For whatever reason,
01:12:44the U.S. seem to have a lower floor
01:12:46than most high-quality teams
01:12:47at the World Cup,
01:12:48but that just is what it is.
01:12:49I think a huge piece of this
01:12:51is going to be
01:12:52who's starting for Belgium, right?
01:12:53Because Rudy Garcia
01:12:54has been hitting all the right buttons
01:12:55about who to start,
01:12:56who to bench,
01:12:57when to bring guys off.
01:12:59He's had a coaching masterclass,
01:13:00and he's going to be offered
01:13:01a lot of gigs
01:13:01when this thing's up.
01:13:03So, Jeremy Doku
01:13:04could start on the left wing?
01:13:05Probably.
01:13:05I would say that he needs to,
01:13:07especially given how much
01:13:08you're going to be against the ball.
01:13:09You're going to need an outlet.
01:13:09You're going to need somebody
01:13:10to run at guys.
01:13:11And then is Kevin De Bruyne
01:13:12going to start her?
01:13:13Or how much does he actually play?
01:13:15And keep in mind
01:13:15that those two guys
01:13:16are fresh coming off
01:13:17of limited, limited,
01:13:18limited playing time
01:13:20against the U.S.
01:13:21in the previous round.
01:13:22For Spain,
01:13:23dominate the game,
01:13:24do what you do,
01:13:25but I need to see more
01:13:27out of Luminium all.
01:13:28And he already came out
01:13:30and said,
01:13:30yeah, I don't really play well
01:13:32until the later knockout stages.
01:13:34Oh, damn.
01:13:35Boy, I'll tell you what,
01:13:37what a way to put
01:13:38even more unnecessary pressure
01:13:39on yourself.
01:13:39But this kid,
01:13:41he's so legit.
01:13:43And he's also got
01:13:44this incredible swagger
01:13:45about him.
01:13:46I don't think he cares
01:13:47about adding that
01:13:48sort of pressure on himself,
01:13:49which was so unnecessary.
01:13:50But at the same time,
01:13:51he's shown up
01:13:52when it mattered most,
01:13:53especially in the Euros
01:13:54when he was, what,
01:13:5516 going on 17 at the time.
01:13:57So I think Spain
01:13:59will win this.
01:13:59I don't think it's going
01:14:00to be a blowout.
01:14:01And I would not be surprised
01:14:02if Belgium gives Spain
01:14:04a little bit more
01:14:04than they can handle.
01:14:05Because I would argue
01:14:07that that Portugal midfield
01:14:08coming into this tournament
01:14:09was deemed as the best
01:14:10in the tournament.
01:14:11I think Spain
01:14:11took that personally.
01:14:12I think that that was
01:14:13a huge game for Spain
01:14:14to prove that their midfield
01:14:17is the best
01:14:17in the competition.
01:14:19Could this be a little bit
01:14:20of a track game for Spain
01:14:21against the Belgium side
01:14:22that a lot of people
01:14:22have pegged to be
01:14:23sort of like, you know,
01:14:24past the golden generation
01:14:25and not nearly as good
01:14:26as we've seen
01:14:27in previous competitions?
01:14:28Maybe.
01:14:29But it's going to have
01:14:30to take a near perfect
01:14:31performance from Belgium
01:14:32to get it done.
01:14:33All right, tomorrow
01:14:34we've got Norway-England
01:14:35star-studded game.
01:14:36Holland, Jude, Harry Kane.
01:14:39What do you make
01:14:40of that game?
01:14:41And, you know,
01:14:41is it coming home?
01:14:42Or is the kind of
01:14:43the Viking run
01:14:45continue here for Norway?
01:14:47It ain't coming home.
01:14:48It's never coming home again.
01:14:49Just like the Jets
01:14:50are never winning
01:14:50another Super Bowl again.
01:14:51So, like, I'm not
01:14:52hopping on that.
01:14:53This game's going
01:14:54to be awesome.
01:14:55This game's going
01:14:55to be awesome.
01:14:56Because I think
01:14:56that England gave
01:14:57every ounce of passion,
01:15:00energy,
01:15:00Naus, whatever,
01:15:02in that game
01:15:02in Mexico
01:15:04against Mexico.
01:15:05And now they come up
01:15:06against the Norway side
01:15:07that is playing
01:15:08with house money,
01:15:09probably shouldn't
01:15:10be here anyway,
01:15:11and they've got
01:15:12the best goal scorer
01:15:13in the world right now.
01:15:14So, I just,
01:15:15I fear for England
01:15:16because I think
01:15:17that Norway's
01:15:18going to really bait them
01:15:18into having more possession
01:15:20and trying to break them
01:15:21down on the low block.
01:15:22And if we know anything
01:15:22about this England group,
01:15:23boys, it's that
01:15:24they left some serious
01:15:26talent back home.
01:15:27Now, Thomas Tuchel
01:15:28has done everything right
01:15:28up until this point.
01:15:29The substitutions
01:15:30that he made
01:15:31when he went down
01:15:31a man against Mexico
01:15:32and everything like that.
01:15:33But if Holland
01:15:35and company
01:15:35are going to get
01:15:36some room to play
01:15:36on the other end
01:15:37and Martin Odegaard
01:15:38is going to be
01:15:38pulling the strings
01:15:39and they even get him
01:15:40two or three
01:15:41decent deliveries
01:15:41over the course
01:15:42of 90 minutes,
01:15:43I think England
01:15:43are going to have
01:15:44a problem.
01:15:45But I know England
01:15:46are the favorite
01:15:47and I get that,
01:15:48but I just can't help
01:15:49but think that Norway
01:15:51are onto something
01:15:51special right now
01:15:52and they're going to
01:15:53feel like they have
01:15:54every right to be
01:15:54on the field
01:15:55against England
01:15:55and England are going
01:15:56to be exhausted
01:15:57coming off that game
01:15:58against Mexico.
01:15:59Yeah, and it does feel
01:16:00like, you know,
01:16:02rare is kind of
01:16:03the Cinderella
01:16:03that makes the finals
01:16:04but you see a lot
01:16:05of these,
01:16:05there's always like
01:16:06an unexpected team
01:16:07that makes the finals
01:16:08but you see an
01:16:09unexpected team
01:16:10sneak into the semis
01:16:11a lot.
01:16:11But let's talk more
01:16:12about Erlen Holland
01:16:13because he's been
01:16:13the breakout superstar
01:16:15of this entire tournament.
01:16:17As we referenced,
01:16:18you've called hundreds
01:16:20upon hundreds of games.
01:16:21This man averages
01:16:23over a goal per game
01:16:24for his country.
01:16:25I think he scored
01:16:26in like 14 consecutive
01:16:27matches.
01:16:27I think it's 28 goals
01:16:28in those 14 for Norway.
01:16:30As someone with
01:16:31more perspective,
01:16:33how do you explain
01:16:34that level of consistency?
01:16:38Like magic?
01:16:39I've never,
01:16:40like I don't know.
01:16:41Like this is ridiculous.
01:16:43We've never seen
01:16:43anything like it before.
01:16:44What is it?
01:16:4452 caps and 64 goals?
01:16:4752 caps and 64 goals?
01:16:49Like it's not,
01:16:50that's not something
01:16:51that Messi's capable
01:16:52of doing.
01:16:52That's not something
01:16:53Ronaldo's capable
01:16:54of doing.
01:16:54Like this is something
01:16:55that when you look
01:16:56at not only his numbers
01:16:59but when you watch him
01:17:00over the course
01:17:00of 90 minutes
01:17:01and how he's so quickly
01:17:02able to pop up
01:17:03in those moments,
01:17:04right?
01:17:04How many chances
01:17:05did he have
01:17:05in that Brazil game?
01:17:06Clear cut chances.
01:17:07Three?
01:17:08Yeah.
01:17:08And he scores
01:17:08on two of them?
01:17:09He had 30 touches
01:17:10in the first 90 minutes
01:17:11which is the least
01:17:12of any player
01:17:13on the field.
01:17:13And he's okay with that.
01:17:15And Norway's okay
01:17:16with that.
01:17:17And if you're
01:17:17the opposition,
01:17:18you're okay with that.
01:17:19But it's the moments
01:17:21when he,
01:17:22you know,
01:17:23the way that he scored
01:17:24that header
01:17:24in the opening goal
01:17:25where arguably
01:17:26one of the best defenders,
01:17:28best central defenders
01:17:28in the world
01:17:29in Gabriel
01:17:30is literally like
01:17:31has him dead to rights.
01:17:33He's behind him
01:17:34and he feels like
01:17:35he can get in front
01:17:36of him.
01:17:36Gabriel's no slouch.
01:17:37But Erling Haaland's
01:17:38first step
01:17:39and more quickly
01:17:40and we talk about this
01:17:41in the NBA all the time
01:17:42and I think it's not
01:17:42talked about enough
01:17:43in Erling Haaland
01:17:45and what he's able to do.
01:17:47His quickness
01:17:47to get off the ground
01:17:48and that first step
01:17:50in and of itself,
01:17:50right?
01:17:51Because we talk about
01:17:51balance in the NBA
01:17:52with a lot of guys
01:17:53and how quickly
01:17:53they're able,
01:17:54like OG Ananobi
01:17:55is a great example
01:17:55of somebody who gets
01:17:56off the ground
01:17:57really quickly.
01:17:58Erling Haaland gets
01:17:59off the ground
01:17:59incredibly quickly
01:18:00and obviously his timing
01:18:01and everything like that
01:18:02is impeccable.
01:18:03But his sheer athleticism
01:18:04and then when he gets
01:18:05in the goal
01:18:05and he gets in moments
01:18:06like this,
01:18:07like he's got
01:18:08a left-footed cannon.
01:18:09It's just,
01:18:10it's not fair
01:18:11because teams feel
01:18:12like they do everything
01:18:13right to be able
01:18:14to deal with him
01:18:15and 89 minutes
01:18:16will have gone
01:18:17and then all of a sudden
01:18:18you find yourself
01:18:18down 1-0
01:18:19wondering what happened
01:18:20and he's wheeling away
01:18:21and celebrating
01:18:22and like,
01:18:22look at this aura
01:18:23from this man.
01:18:24Like he knows
01:18:25how good he is
01:18:26and he knows
01:18:27that this is his
01:18:28tournament right now
01:18:28and if you're England
01:18:30you're going to have
01:18:30a real problem
01:18:31because Esri Kansa
01:18:32and whoever else
01:18:33is going to be starting
01:18:34along the back line
01:18:35with him,
01:18:35like Erling Haaland
01:18:36terrorizes those guys
01:18:37for a living
01:18:38every single week
01:18:38in the Premier League.
01:18:39Like I can only imagine
01:18:40what it's going to be like
01:18:41for 90 minutes
01:18:42in a quarterfinal
01:18:43at the World Cup.
01:18:44I can't wait.
01:18:45It's going to be,
01:18:46I mean every game's
01:18:47been fantastic
01:18:47up to this point
01:18:48to be fantastic
01:18:48from here on out.
01:18:49A quick Chicago Fire
01:18:51question on the way
01:18:52out here.
01:18:52Again,
01:18:52used to call these games
01:18:53for years,
01:18:54used to live here.
01:18:54How about Lewandowski
01:18:56making his way
01:18:57to the state side,
01:18:58dude?
01:18:58Oh yeah,
01:18:59unreal,
01:19:00huge.
01:19:00And I'll tell you what,
01:19:02Chicago have been trying
01:19:03to really swing big
01:19:04for a few years now.
01:19:05There have been some
01:19:06other huge name superstars
01:19:07that they've potentially
01:19:08tried to go after
01:19:09that haven't necessarily
01:19:09landed.
01:19:10And you can even go back
01:19:11to Jordan Shaqiri,
01:19:12but he's nowhere near
01:19:13the level of Lewandowski
01:19:14or some of the other guys
01:19:15that they're looking at.
01:19:16But this is huge.
01:19:18I mean,
01:19:18we all know the Polish
01:19:19community that exists
01:19:20within Chicago,
01:19:20but even more so than that,
01:19:21just that Chicago
01:19:23is such a soccer town
01:19:24and any friendly
01:19:25that happens
01:19:26that like involves
01:19:27any country
01:19:28that even has
01:19:29half of a following,
01:19:31like Soldier Field's
01:19:31always packed.
01:19:32And we saw
01:19:33what it was like
01:19:34for the send-off game
01:19:34against Germany,
01:19:35even though the U.S.
01:19:36ended up losing that game.
01:19:37Like the atmosphere
01:19:38was remarkable.
01:19:39And for Chicago
01:19:40to have now
01:19:41one of the greatest
01:19:42goal scorers
01:19:42in the past 25 years
01:19:43joining their team,
01:19:44a brand new stadium
01:19:45opening up.
01:19:46When Joe Mancueto
01:19:47took over in 2020,
01:19:48this was the vision.
01:19:49I think that he hoped
01:19:50that they were going
01:19:51to get there
01:19:51a little bit closer
01:19:52than it taking six years.
01:19:54But this is next level.
01:19:55And by the way,
01:19:56the guy that you had
01:19:57on the show yesterday,
01:19:57Greg Berhalter,
01:19:58he's got a lot of work
01:19:59to do now with this group
01:20:00because he's also got
01:20:01a great striker in Hugo Kuypers
01:20:02who's been scoring
01:20:03double-digit goals
01:20:04for the past several seasons.
01:20:05So now you have to figure out
01:20:06can you play with both of them
01:20:07on the field at the same time?
01:20:08Are you going to sell
01:20:08Hugo Kuypers?
01:20:09Like what does this look like
01:20:10from a player personnel standpoint?
01:20:12But I can't wait
01:20:13to see with Lewandowski.
01:20:14He's going to absolutely
01:20:16terrorize this league.
01:20:17It's going to be scary.
01:20:18It's going to be fun to watch.
01:20:19Certainly feel lucky
01:20:20to live in the city
01:20:20this time.
01:20:21Tyler,
01:20:22incredible work, man,
01:20:22throughout the tournament.
01:20:24What a rise.
01:20:25What memories you've been making.
01:20:27You've been fantastic here.
01:20:28Thank you for being
01:20:29so generous with your time.
01:20:30And yeah,
01:20:31look forward to watching you
01:20:32for years to come, man.
01:20:34Appreciate you, boys.
01:20:35By the way,
01:20:35since when did cheesesteaks
01:20:36become a summer sandwich?
01:20:38Well, we didn't tell you.
01:20:39Whoa, whoa.
01:20:41It's a summer tournament,
01:20:43not a summer sandwich tournament,
01:20:44if that makes sense.
01:20:46It's a tournament taking place
01:20:47during the summer,
01:20:48but the sandwiches are not
01:20:49No cheesesteaks slander around here.
01:20:51They're not calendar locked.
01:20:52I would never slander
01:20:53the good name of the cheesesteak,
01:20:54but if we're going to have
01:20:55a summer tournament,
01:20:56even if it's not
01:20:57a summer sandwich tournament,
01:20:58like it just,
01:20:58I'm not having a cheesesteak
01:21:00in the middle of the summer.
01:21:00Come on.
01:21:01I'm not wrong.
01:21:02I would.
01:21:02Wait, Terrence,
01:21:03what would be your sandwich
01:21:05one seed?
01:21:07Italian sub, for sure.
01:21:09Okay.
01:21:09Okay.
01:21:10There you go.
01:21:10Okay, so that's in keeping
01:21:11with our bracket.
01:21:13All right, Tyler,
01:21:13thank you so much, man.
01:21:15Thanks, Tyler.
01:21:15Appreciate you, boys.
01:21:16Fox Sports Talk Terrence.
01:21:17What a badass, dude.
01:21:19That's the feeling of a guy
01:21:21that's just going to keep
01:21:22rocking up.
01:21:23We're going to see him
01:21:24on more and more
01:21:25different broadcasts
01:21:26going forward.
01:21:27Excellent play-by-play, man.
01:21:28All right, let's close
01:21:29out the show.
01:21:29Close out the week next
01:21:31here on FS1.
01:21:32We'll send you
01:21:33into the weekend, baby.
01:21:35Scoop.
01:21:36Damn so pumped to drink
01:21:37some beers.
01:21:41Welcome back to Wake
01:21:42Up Barstool, guys.
01:21:43It is the weekend.
01:21:45Officially, that's right.
01:21:46We're going to send you
01:21:47out.
01:21:47Look, I hope everybody
01:21:48has a fantastic time
01:21:50this weekend.
01:21:51Hope you have beautiful
01:21:52weather, wonderful drinks,
01:21:53better people.
01:21:55And as for me, I'm going
01:21:57to be locked in on
01:21:58Labriezi.
01:21:59LeBron, what's he going
01:22:00to do?
01:22:01LeBron James.
01:22:01Danny, do you think we
01:22:02get a decision this weekend?
01:22:04What's up?
01:22:04Do you think we get a
01:22:05decision this weekend?
01:22:06By Monday, could we know
01:22:07where LeBron James will be
01:22:08taking his talents?
01:22:08I think he's going to
01:22:09take his sweet arse time.
01:22:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:22:12I think he's going to take
01:22:13as long as he needs, get
01:22:14all the attention in the
01:22:15world, and then, boom,
01:22:17he's going to Cleveland.
01:22:18And he's probably going to
01:22:19win a championship in his
01:22:20last year, and it's going
01:22:20to go off in the sunset.
01:22:22It's going to be a
01:22:22beautiful story.
01:22:23You think he'll win a
01:22:23championship if he goes to
01:22:24Cleveland?
01:22:24I just think that the
01:22:26basketball gods would
01:22:27make that happen.
01:22:28Now, by basketball gods,
01:22:30you mean the literal
01:22:30basketball gods, or are
01:22:31you saying Adam Silver
01:22:32and the NBA would put
01:22:34their thumb on the scale?
01:22:35Maybe a combination of
01:22:36both.
01:22:36Okay.
01:22:37But, honestly, I don't
01:22:40care.
01:22:40LeBron, I'm done with it.
01:22:42Just, he's 40, he's
01:22:44still a great player, but
01:22:45like, I'm sick of the
01:22:48rodeo.
01:22:48No, I get it.
01:22:49You're still disgusted
01:22:49because you traded away
01:22:51your MVP candidate for an
01:22:52older player in Paul
01:22:53George and the
01:22:54Celtics are going to be
01:22:55really good, but I don't
01:22:56know if they're going to
01:22:56be better.
01:22:57I can't believe they're
01:22:57the second best odds in
01:22:59the East still.
01:23:00Yeah.
01:23:00What does the NBA know?
01:23:02Still better odds?
01:23:03I mean, yeah, again,
01:23:04maybe it's like a Bears
01:23:05situation where they're
01:23:06saying what happened in
01:23:07the collapse last year
01:23:08against Philadelphia is
01:23:09not maybe the most
01:23:11repeatable.
01:23:11Maybe Paul George is
01:23:12still good.
01:23:13I'm coming around.
01:23:14So, Chiefs, the other
01:23:15day I was driving around
01:23:17listening to some local
01:23:17Chicago Sports Talk radio
01:23:19and, oh, so good.
01:23:21They're breaking down
01:23:21obscure roster moves.
01:23:23Caleb Williams' body
01:23:24language.
01:23:25Like, that's the stuff
01:23:25you live for.
01:23:26That's the good stuff.
01:23:27That's summer talk right
01:23:28What is the latest, though,
01:23:29on Williams and his
01:23:30development in this
01:23:31offseason?
01:23:31Is the hype train
01:23:32rolling along in full
01:23:33steam here?
01:23:34Yeah, I think, you know,
01:23:35year two of Ben Johnson,
01:23:36he had the quote where he
01:23:37was drinking from a fire
01:23:38hose this time last year
01:23:40just trying to get the
01:23:40playbook, the terminology,
01:23:41all that stuff.
01:23:43And I think it kind of
01:23:44clicked towards the end
01:23:44of last year.
01:23:45He also had three rookies
01:23:48with Burden, Loveland,
01:23:50and the running back.
01:23:52I'm blanking on his name
01:23:52right now.
01:23:53I don't know why.
01:23:54And now you're getting
01:23:54out of, you know,
01:23:55now the old guy's gone
01:23:57and DJ Moore, like,
01:23:57so yeah, they're kind of
01:23:58taking center stage.
01:24:00Yeah, so it's like,
01:24:00it's kind of like a
01:24:01transition, but those,
01:24:02like, all those guys
01:24:03should be ready.
01:24:04Year two Ben Johnson.
01:24:05I think that they've,
01:24:07you know, we'll see how
01:24:08the line looks without
01:24:11their starting center,
01:24:12all pro center.
01:24:13But other than,
01:24:14that's a problem.
01:24:15But, uh.
01:24:16What is that?
01:24:16Why am I forgetting
01:24:18his name too?
01:24:18Joel Damon?
01:24:19I went to Rutgers.
01:24:20Thalman?
01:24:21Oh, the running back?
01:24:21What?
01:24:23Kyle Manunga.
01:24:24There it is.
01:24:25And, uh, yeah,
01:24:26so I think, I don't know,
01:24:28like, I'm ready for
01:24:28football.
01:24:29Like, you know,
01:24:30I've kind of checked
01:24:30out of baseball during
01:24:31the World Cup.
01:24:32I think once, uh,
01:24:33we got probably a week
01:24:34after the World Cup
01:24:35final before training
01:24:36camp, all will be right
01:24:38with the World Cup.
01:24:38Okay, so from a guy
01:24:39with Manungais to a guy
01:24:41who loves a lot of guys,
01:24:43Mikey Kadick, uh,
01:24:45we're about, what,
01:24:46six weeks from college
01:24:47football here?
01:24:50Yes.
01:24:52That was a great
01:24:52transition.
01:24:53How do you, how do you,
01:24:55how do you feel about
01:24:56the fact that you've
01:24:57literally made me turn
01:24:58on Indiana with how
01:24:59obnoxious you've become?
01:25:00Uh, it's fine.
01:25:01I've supported you
01:25:01for two years now.
01:25:02I thank you for,
01:25:03I thank you for your
01:25:04support.
01:25:04And now, and now what,
01:25:06you just, you just think
01:25:07Indiana's just gonna roll
01:25:08over everybody?
01:25:09No, I don't.
01:25:10You're not at all
01:25:10worried about Ohio State
01:25:12bringing back here
01:25:12But we already have
01:25:13the juice, we don't need
01:25:14more juice from you,
01:25:16so we kind of sucked
01:25:17all the juice out of you.
01:25:18Yeah, but isn't it all
01:25:19downhill from here?
01:25:20I mean, you literally
01:25:20can't do better than
01:25:21you did last year.
01:25:22Throw your dead corpse.
01:25:23You literally cannot do
01:25:24better than you did last year.
01:25:25It's all downhill from here.
01:25:27No.
01:25:27Correct.
01:25:28Okay, thank you, yeah.
01:25:28We're in 16-0 again.
01:25:3016-0 back-to-back years?
01:25:32Yes.
01:25:33Do you have any,
01:25:34because I know you still
01:25:35got connections with the team,
01:25:36have you heard any
01:25:36Hoover hype?
01:25:37Like, what are they,
01:25:38I mean, obviously, like,
01:25:39we talk about it
01:25:40on Wednesday's show.
01:25:41You know what I've heard
01:25:42the most hype about
01:25:43is our defense
01:25:43and our defensive line.
01:25:45That was a concern of mine
01:25:47after last year,
01:25:48but we have Tyreek Tucker,
01:25:50Mario Landino
01:25:51coming back inside,
01:25:53returning Isaiah Jones
01:25:54and Elijah Hardy
01:25:55and the linebackers.
01:25:57DBs, where we lost a lot,
01:25:58but we have Jamari Sharp
01:25:59coming back.
01:26:01Our D-line, I've heard,
01:26:03is scary.
01:26:04Which is crazy,
01:26:05because last year...
01:26:06That has gone up
01:26:07against them in spring ball
01:26:08and summer,
01:26:09they're scary.
01:26:10Because last year,
01:26:11I mean, one of the most
01:26:11undersized front sevens,
01:26:13but still one of the
01:26:13most deadly effective,
01:26:14so if they actually get,
01:26:15like, the base talent,
01:26:16yeah, the potential
01:26:17becomes huge.
01:26:17And I just think
01:26:18our coordinators,
01:26:19Coach Shanahan and Coach Haynes,
01:26:20are the two best in the country,
01:26:22and then Coach Sigg
01:26:23just kind of doing his thing,
01:26:24holding the standard.
01:26:25Chief, Conor Bedard,
01:26:26surgery,
01:26:27going to miss start a season.
01:26:28How do we feel
01:26:28on this Blackhawks fit?
01:26:29Yeah, it's depressing,
01:26:30because this will be
01:26:31three out of his four years
01:26:33where he's going to miss
01:26:33about ten or so games.
01:26:35He still doesn't have
01:26:36a contract extension,
01:26:37so currently he's unemployed.
01:26:39He doesn't have a deal
01:26:40right now,
01:26:40so they've got to get
01:26:41that done.
01:26:43He's got, you know,
01:26:43the surgery,
01:26:44you know, four months,
01:26:45so then it, like,
01:26:47it's going to take him
01:26:47a little bit to ramp up,
01:26:48so it's like another season.
01:26:50You were hoping that
01:26:51they could push forward
01:26:52this year.
01:26:52Now it just got a lot harder.
01:26:54All right, guys,
01:26:55well, look,
01:26:56shout out to Fox.
01:26:57They've been covering
01:26:57the World Cup,
01:26:58doing an incredible job.
01:26:58By the way,
01:26:59the 4K cameras,
01:27:00the 4K production
01:27:02on Fox,
01:27:03the super slow-mo replays.
01:27:05We've got Spain,
