00:09The Bolivarian government orders to United Nations member states to release Venezuela's
00:14frozen funds to coordinate an urgent response for the affected population following the June 24
00:19earthquakes. In the Democratic Republic of Congo the Ebola outbreak continues to worsen with
00:27teleauthorities reporting that at least 600 people have died and 1,759 confirmed cases have been recorded.
00:38Iran responded this Thursday with a missile and drone attack against U.S. military facilities in
00:43the Persian Gulf following the airstrikes launched by Washington against the southern part of its
00:48territory in the last few hours. Hello welcome to From the South I am Lorena Fong from the
01:00Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:23Venezuela's Foreign Minister Ivรกn Gil reported that the Bolivarian government urged United Nations
01:28member states to release Venezuela's frozen sovereign funds. Ivรกn Gil made this announcement during
01:33his intervention at a high-level ministerial meeting on the humanitarian response shared
01:38by Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher. The gathering took place within the
01:43framework of Fletcher's working visit to the country during which he observed the serious
01:48humanitarian situation facing thousands of families following the June 24 double earthquakes. The
01:54Venezuelan Foreign Minister detailed that the meeting addressed coordinating an urgent, effective, and
01:59dignified response for affected population. Attendees included the United Nations Resident Coordinator in
02:05Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla, and other authorities from multilateral agencies.
02:28And as was pointed out to me by the Undersecretary Tom Fletcher, we have 170 countries that are helping us
02:36and that we will continue to need help.
02:57And what we want is to transmit this humanitarian aid that it be like a second area, a second push
03:04to keep on maintaining the humanitarian aid level to continue to
03:11to solve all the problems. In this context, Venezuela's foreign minister called for the release of the country state funds
03:19that remained frozen as a result of the economic sanctions imposed by the United States.
03:30And the first resource that we have are our own resources in order to face the different situations today.
03:52And I would like to make a call at this moment to all the countries who have our funds that
03:59are outside the country that are blocked and to unblock them so that we can use those funds for the
04:04recovery of the country.
04:06The Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Tom Fletcher highlighted the coordination of the humanitarian response led by the
04:15government of the Bolivarian nation and the exceptional performance of the rescue teams and the Venezuelan people.
04:21It's really important to note that the key responders in this crisis have been local communities.
04:29Those who went out from the first moment to search for their neighbors and their loved ones, but also the
04:36work that the government has done to lead and coordinate the response.
04:43From the first moment, and I was there in Geneva as our team mobilized, I watched them book the seats
04:50on the first planes.
04:50We saw the Swiss team, search and rescue team on that first plane with our team going out to try
04:58to mobilize and coordinate the response.
05:00And since then we had over 50 urban search and rescue teams from over 30 countries.
05:06The United Nations recognizes also the support that has been mobilized, but reiterates that it is insufficient in this context.
05:13The Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Indrika Ratwati reiterated that the earthquakes have caused
05:23the casualties and created significant needs.
05:27The earthquakes have resulted in thousands of casualties, generated significant humanitarian needs and require rapid, coordinated and sustained response.
05:37This is reiterated by all the colleagues we have heard.
05:40While we are encouraged by the support, the generous support received to date with 324.2 million mobilized, this is
05:48less than half the funding required under the original Venezuela humanitarian needs and response plan.
05:55India's permanent representative to the United Nations highlighted his country's solidarity in the face of the emergency in Venezuela detailing
06:02the deployment of specialized personnel, field hospitals and humanitarian aid sent to support response efforts.
06:10India believes that vulnerable challenges demand collective, swift and empathetic action.
06:16True to the spirit, India responded immediately to the tragedy by launching Operation Amistad.
06:21On June 26th, Indian relief missions embarked on a 14,300-kilometer journey to deliver immediate life-saving assistance.
06:28Two aircrafts were dispatched carrying a 41-member specialized team of rescue personnel and medical personnel to support search, rescue
06:37and emergency care efforts.
06:39Our humanitarian consignment delivered 30 tons of relief supplies and six tons of medical equipment and medicines.
06:46To provide rapid, self-reliant medical assistance in the most affected areas, we also deployed an Indian Army field hospital
06:53unit equipped with disaster relief pallets alongside two advanced Bheishma Portable Field Hospitals.
07:02For this part, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management highlighted the crucial role of humanitarian partners and
07:10first responders following the earthquake in Venezuela while calling for continued access and support to the country.
07:19Of this would have been possible without our humanitarian partners on the ground acting with speed and flexibility.
07:28And we have to pay tribute to them, to every first responder, every humanitarian worker, every partner.
07:36I think that their courage must be really underlined and acknowledged.
07:43As you rightly say, Minister, sadly, the window for search and rescue is closing.
07:49We are now moving into a broader humanitarian phase, and this means that we must make sure
07:55humanitarian organizations can reach everyone in need safely and without obstacles.
08:02Aid workers need visas, relief supplies need clear customs quickly, and aid workers must
08:11be able to move safely and cash assistance must resume so families can start rebuilding
08:18their lives.
08:19When international partners, local authorities and communities work side by side, this is
08:27humanitarian action at its best.
08:30We reach more people faster and more effectively because disasters don't end when the ground
08:38stops shaking.
08:40Recovery starts the very next day alongside the life-saving work.
08:47Also Colombia's delegation to the United Nations emphasized the importance of maintaining international
08:52cooperation to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches affected communities effectively.
08:58Colombia Reaffairs, its commitment to continue working with the government of Venezuela,
09:04the United Nations, regional partners, and the wider international community to strengthen
09:09coordination and ensure that humanitarian assistance is delivered effectively in accordance with
09:14identified needs and with the dignity of affected populations at its center.

12:48In this context, search and rescue operations continue with specialized technical teams
12:52and heavy machinery deployed to continue efforts to locate survivors
12:56in areas that suffered the greatest structural impact.
13:07Yesterday, I had a phone conversation with the director of the International Monetary Fund.
13:14I would like to thank her for her attention to this matter
13:17and for her understanding in releasing Venezuela's blocked funds held by the fund.
13:23We also called on governments around the world
13:26that have frozen Venezuelan assets to release them
13:32so that Venezuela can carry out its recovery process as soon as possible.
13:44In this context, the acting president, Elsie Rodriguez, highlighted the solidarity expressed
13:48by the 170 countries at the United Nations following two earthquakes that hit Venezuela.
13:57And I also want you to know that Venezuela is not alone,
14:00not only as a community that has come together in solidarity,
14:03with love and understanding, but also through international support.
14:11Today, a meeting was held at the United Nations to address the humanitarian impact
14:15resulting from the earthquake, the twin earthquake, in Venezuela.
14:25You should know that 170 countries participated,
14:29and each one asked to speak to express their solidarity with Venezuela,
14:33convey their condolences to our people, and continue moving forward.
14:40On Wednesday, the Peru chapter of the Coordination for Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution

15:34Various neighborhoods in Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic,
15:39held massive pot and pen protests since Monday night, including this Wednesday,
15:43to protest the high cost of living, power outages, and lack of basic services
15:48that are severely affecting the country.
15:51The protests, backed by social organizations such as the Association of Housewives committees,

17:20Welcome back to From the South.
17:21We continue now with more information.
17:23The evacuation efforts remain underway in southern China's Guangxi region
17:27after a severe flooding triggered by Tropical Storm Aisac
17:31overwhelmed cities, left rising and stranded.
17:34Heavy rains has pounded the area since last Saturday,
17:37with some communities receiving between 10 and 40 centimeters of rainfall,
17:41while the hottest-hit locations recording more than 90 centimeters.
17:45The intense downpours caused the reservoir to overflow or burst,
17:50sending powerful floodwaters throughout towns and urban areas.
17:55Authorities say at least six people have died and about 130,000 residents have been evacuated.
18:01Rescue operations continue across the region, with more than 8,000 emergency personnel
18:06and nearly 5,700 boats deployed to reach affected communities
18:10and assist those still impacted by the flooding.
18:22In the Moroccan Republic of the Congo, the Ebola outbreak continues to worsen with health authorities
18:28reporting that at least 600 people have died and 1,759 confirmed cases have been recorded.
18:35Government data released on Wednesday reflects figures confirmed throughout Tuesday,
18:40including 51 new infections and 20 deaths reported in the previous 24 hours.
18:45Officials are also reviewing two additional suspected cases in Kinsangani, one of the country's largest cities.
18:52Those cases are awaiting laboratory confirmation before being added to the official total.
18:58Authorities say one patient has been linked to the village of Nya Nya, where the outbreak first emerged,
19:05while the other case has not confirmed geographic connection beyond Kinsangani,
19:09raising concerns as health teams continue monitoring the spread of the virus.
19:20In this context, efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak are facing a new setback,
19:25as health care workers at the center of the crisis walk off the job over delayed pay.
19:31Front-line staff in Ituri province say they have not received wages or bonuses since the outbreak was declared on
19:39May 15.
19:40Workers also report shortages of protective equipment,
19:43and claim they have been treated unfairly by authorities and response teams.
19:49The walkout also coincides with the start of enrollment for clinical trials targeting the Wounded Buggy strain of the Ebola
19:56virus,
19:57raising fresh concerns about the response of one of the deadliest outbreaks on record.
20:23Moving on our information to the Middle East, Iran responded this Thursday with a missile and drone attack against United
20:29States military facilities in the Persian Gulf,
20:31following the airstrike launched by Washington against the southern pan of its territory in the last few hours.
20:38Regional authorities confirmed the explosions in Kuwait and Bahrain, according to the Kuwait Ministry of Defense.
20:44Its defense systems were activated, while Bahrain reports several impacts in the vicinity of the U.S. fleet's headquarters.
20:53Anti-aircraft alarms were also activated at a military base with a U.S. presence in Jordan.
20:59According to a preliminary report from the Iranian Revolutionary War Corps,
21:0385 targets linked to the U.S. military facilities, including the Ali al-Salem base in Kuwait and the port
21:10of Salman in Bahrain were struck.
21:20In Iraq, thousands of people and pilgrims from across the region have gathered in holy cities of Nahav and Karbala
21:27to pay tribute to the martyr leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei.
21:34Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces stated the turnout for the funeral has been unprecedented,
21:39estimating that more than 4 million people have gathered in Karbala alone.
21:44Crowds began arriving before the official ceremony as the Iraqi government declared a national holiday
21:50to facilitate travel and participation.
21:52The coffin received in Nahav by Iranian President Masul Peskian and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Saidi
22:00was taken to the shrine of Imam Ali before the ceremony in Karbala.
22:05And with an atmosphere of deep mourning and expression of solidarity between the two nations.
22:28Another information, this edition of the FIFA World Cup has delivered so many goals so far.
22:34Let's see the top three in our opinion.
22:37At number three is Erling Haaland's late winner against Brazil.
22:41Norway entered the match as underdogs, but with Haaland leading the attack,
22:44they stunned one of the tournament favorites.
22:46His calm finish in the 90th minute from outside the Brazil box sealed a famous 2-1 victory for Norway
22:52to set up a quarter-final against England.
22:55At number two is Lionel Messi's opener against Cape Verde.
22:58His equalizer came before Cape Verdeans twice fought back to level the match,
23:02but the Argentinian captain stepped up in a high-pressure match to deliver another brilliant early goal,
23:07helping send the defending champions into the round of 16.
23:11Taking the top spot is Sidney Lobos Cabral's unforgettable equalizer against Argentina.
23:16His goal made it 2-2 in extra time and became one of the biggest moments in Cape Verde's football
23:21history.
23:24And the World Cup is not a World Cup if there aren't any controversies. Unfortunately, let's see the top three
23:31as well.
23:33Starting at number three, Miguel Almiron's red card left fans completely confused.
23:37The Paraguayan captain was sent off after covering his mouth while speaking to Turkey A's right back during a Group
23:42D match.
23:43Many believed the punishment was far too harsh, and the incident quickly became one of the most debated refereeing decisions
23:49of the tournament.
23:50At number two is Croatia's disallowed goal.
23:53They all found the back of the net, but after a review, the goal was ruled out because the tournament's
23:58ball sensor detected an infringement in the build-up.
24:00The decision sparked a huge debate over whether technology should have that much influence on crucial World Cup moments.
24:06Taking the top spot is Folarin Balogun's overturned red card.
24:10The U.S. striker was sent off during the match against Bosnia after a foul, meaning he was set to
24:15miss the crucial knockout game against Belgium.
24:18But just before the match, FIFA overturned the suspension, allowing Balogun to play.
24:22The controversy grew even bigger when U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino
24:30to ask for the decision to be reviewed,
24:32rising questions over political influence in FIFA's disciplinary process, and making it the biggest controversy of the tournament.
24:39And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
