08 July - National morning forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there.
00:01The very warm, if not hot weather that was previously confined to the south of the UK
00:06is spreading much further north over the next couple of days and intensifying with the peak
00:13of the heat in terms of absolute UK maximum temperatures expected Thursday and Friday,
00:18although this fine spell of weather expected to last much longer than that.
00:23Overnight we'll see low cloud drift into parts of Western Britain as well as Northern
00:27Ireland, patchy rain and drizzle continues for the northwest of Scotland, otherwise
00:32it's a dry and warm night across the board, mid to high teens widely, 20 celsius in one
00:38or two spots.
00:39So uncomfortable for sleeping, not quite as fiercely oppressive as those nights that we
00:44saw at the end of June.
00:46But we start Thursday with plenty of sunshine, now the low cloud in western parts of Britain
00:51will retreat back to sea areas through the morning relatively quickly and then widespread
00:55blue skies for England and Wales.
00:57Some medium and high level cloud drifting east across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland,
01:01thickest cloud once again, the west coast of Scotland where we'll see continued outbreaks
01:05of light rain and drizzle.
01:07Feeling cool here, otherwise it's mid-20s for northern parts of the UK, high 20s into some
01:14southern parts of Northern England, so for the likes of Lancashire into parts of Yorkshire
01:20we're talking about high 20s.
01:21And then further south again, widely the low 30s if not up to 34, 35 celsius in the hottest
01:28spot likely to be just the west of London, central southern England.
01:31So a hot or very warm day for the vast majority and the heat wave is expanding its way west
01:39and
01:39north as the next few days continue.
01:42So overnight Thursday into Friday, continued to see some low cloud across the northwest of
01:47Scotland, outbreaks of persistent rain arriving by the end of the night, that cloud drifting
01:51into Northern Ireland and we'll also see patches of cloud elsewhere, a few mist patches as well.
01:57But actually on the whole it's a clear night and another very warm night, a touch warmer
02:02if anything compared with Wednesday night into Thursday.
02:06And here we are going into Friday, we've got a weather front across the northwest of Scotland
02:13and that's going to activate through the day bringing some persistent rain, otherwise high
02:18pressure clings on with a lot of clear skies to begin things on Friday, temperatures rising
02:24quickly through the morning and look at this contrast with some heavy rain in the northwest
02:28of Scotland on Friday morning.
02:30Elsewhere it's mostly dry and bright, plenty of sunshine for southern and eastern Scotland,
02:36England and Wales and temperatures perhaps a degree or so higher compared with Thursdays.
02:42So we're looking at quite widely across central parts of England into east Wales, the low
02:4730s and could even see a 35 or 36 Celsius.
02:53That's the peak of the heat in terms of absolute UK maximum temperatures, but it's only a very
03:00slow cooling trend through the weekend and early next week as high pressure drifts north
03:04and we get more of an easterly airflow.
03:07So still widespread sunny skies this weekend and into next week and widespread very warm, if not hot weather.
