Transcript
00:00It was around 9.30 and I heard people yelling and then I heard gunshots and I looked out my
00:04window and I saw a gunman and I called 911.
00:08Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're exploring the infamous cases throughout history of terrible people who, for one reason
00:14or another, sought revenge against their nearby neighbors by committing crimes against them.
00:19Police arrested Bobby Durst and charged him with murder. They set a high bail at $300,000. He instantly posted
00:26it.
00:27Noise revenge.
00:28Was it their apartment? Was it the water? Well, when they saw this, a man injecting some sort of chemical
00:35through the bottom of their door into their home, they knew their lives could be in jeopardy.
00:41In 2022, Umar Abdullah and his wife welcomed their new baby into their Tampa, Florida condo, which they'd recently moved
00:47into.
00:47Yet, instead of focusing on their new addition, Umar began receiving messages from his downstairs neighbor, Xu Ming Lee.
00:53The PhD student was furious at the noise the Abdullas were apparently making.
00:58Well, after my daughter was born in August last year, um, he's complained, like, footstep complaint, drawer closing.
01:07But escalated to this.
01:09I installed a hidden camera outside.
01:11Months later, the Abdullas began to feel unwell and could smell an unknown chemical.
01:16Then, Umar spotted that the front door had been tampered with, so he placed a hidden camera.
01:20Shockingly, it showed Lee with a syringe suspected to be filled with controlled substances, as he discharged the concoction under
01:28the door.
01:28Initial toxicology reports from police say the substance being pumped into their apartment consists of two strong opioids, methadone and
01:38hydrocodone.
01:39When Lee was arrested, he was deported to China before he could face the charges.
01:43Trash can attack.
01:44Having a famous parent can't protect you completely when you go nuclear against a neighbor.
01:49Adam, the son of the legendary NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was facing a common conflict with his San Clemente,
01:56California neighbor, trash cans.
01:5860-year-old Ray Windsor says he's known Adam Abdul-Jabbar since he was a child.
02:03They live next to each other in San Clemente.
02:06He says they've had arguments in the past, the last one back in December, but nothing like what happened Tuesday
02:12night.
02:12As the residences shared a driveway, the neighbor was reportedly annoyed that Adam hadn't taken his bins in.
02:18In 2020, following a confrontation, Adam attacked the man with a knife.
02:22The injuries sustained by the neighbor were so severe that he nearly lost his life in the hospital.
02:26He was on me.
02:28I thought he was punching me, but he actually had a knife.
02:30After about the, after the fourth punch, I felt a very sharp pain and noticed blood coming out of me.
02:37In 2021, after taking a plea deal, Adam was sentenced to six months in jail with the option to apply
02:42for home confinement.
02:43District Attorney Todd Spitzer stated afterwards that the lenient sentence was an absolute miscarriage of justice.
02:50The Killing of Adjika Owens
02:51Since 2021 in Ocala, Florida, Owens and her neighbor Susan Lawrence had clashed several times, resulting in the police being
02:59called six times.
03:00And as the body camera video shows us, Lawrence was no stranger to calling 911.
03:06And what about her threat that she's going to come and drag my ass and beat me?
03:09When I started calling you because she didn't get out of my case, she just kept standing in front of
03:13me.
03:13Yet in 2023, the conflict sadly became fatal.
03:17Reportedly, while Owens' children played in an outdoor space, Lawrence became furious, seeing the area as her own.
03:23So, she yelled racial slurs at the kids and struck one with roller skates.
03:28Later, Owens knocked on her door to confront her about what had happened.
03:31While on the inside, Lawrence fired into the door, taking Owens' life.
03:35Lawrence admitted, even though she could see Owens did not have a weapon, Lawrence got out her Remington 380 and
03:43from her kitchen fired one shot through the door.
03:46Following her arrest, Lawrence claimed she did it in self-defense.
03:50Immediately, this case spawned debates about race and the state's stand-your-ground law.
03:54In 2024, Lawrence was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years.
03:59Ms. Lawrence, the jury has found you guilty of manslaughter with a firearm.
04:04You're going to be held in custody of the Marion County jail without bond.
04:07Okay?
04:09Thank you and good luck to you.
04:10The murder of James and Lisa Goy.
04:12The morning started as any other morning.
04:15They were out shoveling their driveways, clearing their cars from this snow.
04:20And then they heard arguing in the middle of the street here.
04:25That was followed by nearly a dozen gunshots.
04:28In 2021, a massive snowstorm descended upon Plains Township, Pennsylvania.
04:33Like many in the area, James and Lisa Goy were shoveling snow from their driveway.
04:37However, the excess snow was being thrown onto the property belonging to their neighbor, Jeffrey Spade.
04:42When he confronted the married couple about it, an argument erupted, soon escalating to threats.
04:47It was a dispute among neighbors.
04:49Police believe the argument began over shoveling snow.
04:52A neighbor just a few doors down tells Eyewitness News she watched it all unfold.
04:57Captured on surveillance footage, Spade went into his house before emerging with a firearm, which he proceeded to use on
05:03the Goy's.
05:03He then went back inside to retrieve another weapon to continue his fatal attack.
05:08After taking the Goy's lives, Spade entered his home again and took his own life,
05:11devastating the entire community with the senseless violence.
05:14We never really had any problems here.
05:17Complete and utter shock because this doesn't happen in Plains.
05:20Never did.
05:21So, it's a different story, I guess, anymore.
05:24The Hatfield-McCoy feud.
05:26Each clan had a patriarch, Devil Ants Hatfield and Randall McCoy.
05:31It's still not exactly clear what started the feud, but many believe it was Randall McCoy's
05:36brother's allegation in 1878 that a Hatfield stole one of his pigs.
05:41A ferocious family feud, so infamous that it inspired books, films, TV shows, video games,
05:47songs, and stage plays.
05:49With most of the McCoys living on the Kentucky side of the Big Sandy River and the Hatfields
05:53in the West Virginia area, their decades-long conflict is said to have had its first major
05:58incident in 1865.
06:00Randall McCoy's brother was a Northern soldier.
06:03He comes back from the war, Devil Ants Hatfield and his family who had fought for the South
06:08let the word get out that they were out to get him, and they eventually ambushed him and
06:12killed him.
06:12It's believed that Asa Harmon McCoy was killed seemingly by a Hatfield.
06:16This sparked years of the two families trading crimes against each other.
06:20Over a dozen people in both families were killed during this vendetta.
06:24Following the 1888 Battle of the Grapevine Creek between them, several members of the Hatfields
06:29were sentenced to life in prison, one being executed, resulting in the end of the feud.
06:33Over time, the two families reconciled.
06:36Hatfield McCoy Family Feud Special.
06:39In 1979, in fact, they went on the game show Family Feud with a live pig on the stage,
06:44a nod to the hog who started it all.
06:47The murder of Aaron Howard.
06:48Police in Abilene, Texas say 67-year-old John Miller and his 31-year-old son, Michael,
06:55were arrested in connection with the death of 37-year-old Aaron Howard.
07:00Living in Abilene, Texas, Howard was known to the authorities and his neighbors for his
07:04mental health and anger issues due to receiving treatment for intermittent explosive disorder.
07:09In 2018, Howard noticed that a mattress he'd thrown into a dumpster he shared with his
07:13neighbors, the Millers, had been removed and placed against his fence.
07:17So, an argument erupted between the families.
07:21Investigators say a dispute arose between him and Howard, at which point Michael Miller
07:26allegedly went inside his home to retrieve a shotgun.
07:30As Howard's partner recorded the interaction, Johnny Miller and his son Michael, armed with
07:34firearms, approached Howard, who had a baseball bat.
07:37The verbal confrontation escalated further into violence, resulting in the Millers taking Howard's
07:42life.
07:42It was a confrontation that should never have happened, and it certainly should never have
07:46ended up with gunfire and murder.
07:49In 2023, while Michael was acquitted of murder, Johnny was found guilty, earning him a 14-year
07:54sentence.
07:55Daniel Wozniak's spree.
07:57Dan was always a very gregarious and outgoing.
08:00He was just such a fun guy.
08:02Very likable, had that twinkle in his eye.
08:05He was the type of person that, you know, you saw them and they were such a life of the
08:09party.
08:10With ambitions of an expensive wedding and honeymoon with his partner, there was one major problem
08:15for local actor Wozniak.
08:16He had a massive debt.
08:18However, upon discovering that war veteran Samuel Herr, who lived in the same apartment
08:23complex in Costa Mesa, California, had a lot of savings, Wozniak formulated a horrific plan.
08:29Investigators saying Wozniak lured 26-year-old Samuel Herr, a military vet, returning from Afghanistan
08:35with over $60,000 socked away in a savings account into a theater attic and shot him.
08:42After taking Herr's life, he then lured his friend, Julie Kibuishi, to the veteran's apartment.
08:46After murdering her too, Wozniak set it up to look like Herr had committed the dreadful
08:51deed and gone on the run.
08:52However, when a boy attempted to withdraw Herr's money for Wozniak, the killer was caught
08:57by the police.
08:57Police nabbed Wozniak at his bachelor party when cash missing from Herr's account was
09:02traced back to him.
09:04Wozniak allegedly confessing to the killing.
09:06I killed Julie.
09:07I killed Sam.
09:08Sam came first.
09:09It was all about the money.
09:11In 2016, Wozniak was found guilty and sentenced to death.
09:15The Wanda Holloway cheerleader case.
09:17Most parents don't like to see their children lose out on a dream.
09:20Yet, Wanda Holloway's reaction was incredibly over the top.
09:24Shanna's mother, Wanda Holloway, dubbed the pom-pom mom, accused of attempting to hire
09:29a hitman to take out the mother of Shanna's cheerleading rival.
09:32In 1991, her daughter Shanna was overlooked for her junior high school cheerleading team
09:36for two consecutive years.
09:38So, Wanda came up with a dark plan by contacting her ex-brother-in-law, Terry Harper.
09:43Mom was allegedly convinced if cheerleading girl's mom gets killed, cheerleader will be so
09:50devastated that she won't be able to continue, and her daughter will make the team.
09:55She asked him to find an assassin to take the life of Verna Heath, whose daughter had
09:59gotten into the squad ahead of Shanna, and lived in the same Channel View, Texas neighborhood
10:02as Wanda.
10:03Instead of doing that, Harper went to the cops, resulting in Wanda's arrest.
10:08Wanda was accused of solicitation to commit capital murder.
10:11The most serious kind of murder one can commit.
10:14After the first trial sentence was overturned, Wanda was retired in 1996, earning her 10 years
10:19in jail after entering a no-contest plea.
10:21You were a kid, and yet you blamed the whole thing on yourself.
10:25Well, I figure if I hadn't existed, or if I had done better, and actually made the team
10:32at some point, then none of this would have happened.
10:35That's how I viewed it as a child.
10:36The Robert Durst case.
10:38The black sheep of the real estate family behind the Durst organization, tragedy seemed
10:42to follow Robert.
10:44Robert Durst first made headlines after he reported his wife missing in 1982, and to
10:49this day, the case remains unsolved.
10:53The family of Kathleen Durst, from the beginning, had said they believed Robert Durst was responsible.
10:59After all, his wife, Kathleen McCormick, vanished in 1982, and his friend, Susan Berman, was
11:04murdered in 2000.
11:06However, in 2001, the remains of Morris Black were found.
11:09The investigation led back to Robert, his neighbor in Galveston, Texas.
11:13Cops found blood on the floor in Black's apartment, and the trail led across the hall
11:18to the kitchen rented by a woman.
11:20That woman was actually Robert Durst, dressed in drag.
11:24After jumping bail, he was eventually tracked down in Pennsylvania.
11:27During the trial, while Robert admitted to disposing of Black's remains, he claimed his
11:31neighbor was killed in self-defense when he fought with Black for his firearm.
11:47The jury found Robert not guilty of murder.
11:50However, he was sentenced to five years for tampering with evidence and jumping bail.
11:54In 2021, Robert was sentenced to life for Berman's murder.
11:57Mr. Durst's statement that only the killer could have written the cadaver note, which
12:02obviously is true, and then his admission that he wrote that note proves his guilt, beyond
12:08a reasonable doubt, a second way.
12:11The Crimes of John Christie
12:13John Christie is one of the most notorious serial killers in history, and one of the most despicable
12:20characters ever to have lived in London.
12:22In 1953, after Christie moved out of 10-Rillington Place in London, England, his 10-year killing
12:28spree came to an end when bodies were found behind wallpaper.
12:31The investigation soon found more remains under the floorboards and in the garden.
12:35It's believed Christie had killed at least eight people during that time, including his wife,
12:40Ethel.
12:40He covered it up by writing to her relatives and saying that she had terrible rheumatism.
12:47She can't visit you, and she can't write to you, and that worked for a while.
12:52Due to his arrest, it also called into question the sentence received by Christie's neighbor,
12:57Timothy Evans, who was executed in 1950.
13:00Evans was accused of killing his wife, Beryl, and their child.
13:03Christie even testified against him during the trial.
13:06The war veteran soon admitted to killing Beryl, and the authorities admitted years later that
13:11Christie was responsible for both Evans' murders.
13:14Christie was found guilty and executed.
13:16I think the fact that Timothy Evans had been executed, and it might well have been a miscarriage
13:23of justice which could not be corrected, did have an effect on the debate about capital
13:30punishment in this country.
13:33Have you ever dealt with a horrible neighbor?
