Will Larkin be on the move before round 1 starts?
Transcript
00:00And let's shift to Dylan Larkin here a little bit, because obviously the NHL draft is tonight and there is
00:05a lot of posturing going on from other teams.
00:09What I'm about to say, Scott Anderson, I don't know to be a fact, but I'm going to state it
00:15as if it was.
00:16OK, you ready? All right. And it's not like some earth shattering analysis, but here's what's going on.
00:21Now, Jeff Merrick of the Daily Faceoff reported yesterday that St. Louis offered multiple first round picks to Dallas for
00:31Jason Robertson.
00:32Robertson told St. Louis, I won't sign there. Deal was off.
00:37Sportsnet reported that Seattle had offered number seven, the pick at number seven tonight and stuff for Jason Robertson.
00:46And a contract. And a contract. Robertson said he wouldn't sign the contract.
00:51That deal was off. Well, did you see the numbers in the contract?
00:54Yeah, it was like ridiculous. It was 14 or 15 million dollars a year.
00:57He turned it down. He said no to that. Whatever.
01:01What's going on is Dallas, who has Jason Robertson and Jason Robertson has expressed a desire to make whatever.
01:09I don't know, 15 and a half, 16 million, whatever it is.
01:13And they're exploring trades and the return.
01:16What Dallas is looking for is they are trying to war chest the assets to meet the asking price given
01:24to them by Stevie to allow them, Dallas, to trade for Dylan Larkin.
01:29So he calls up Stevie. Dallas calls up Stevie and says, what does it take to get Larkin?
01:37He says, here's what it'll take. Now Dallas is trying to get that what it takes from a Jason Robertson
01:43trade to get the get Dylan Larkin.
01:48And that's what Detroit's after. Yeah, that would be it's interesting.
01:54It's another team in the mix, right? Yeah.
01:56It's unfortunate. It doesn't seem like you can't just cut to the chase and say Jason Robertson for Dylan Larkin
02:01and stuff.
02:02Right. Right. Right. That would be the what you really just want to do.
02:04Just give me Jason Robertson. Yep.
02:06You know, we have to give you some some draft capital or or minor league players in addition to Larkin
02:12to make that happen.
02:13Let's let's do that. But that doesn't sound like that.
02:15Again, stating it is fact, even though I really don't know.
02:17It's because Jason Robertson said I won't sign in Detroit.
02:20Right. That could be it. Stating it is fact, stating it is fact, even though I really don't know.
02:24But that's like that's what I think is going on here is Dallas.
02:30They can't afford Robertson. They do have they're up against the cap.
02:33So they can't afford what Robertson wants. Yeah. They can't afford Larkin's eight million dollar salary.
02:38They want to stay competitive. They want to. And Detroit is like, look, you don't have what we need.
02:43Here's what we need. So they're trying to get what Detroit needs in a Robertson deal.
02:48So Vincent Trocek is another player that's coveted on the trade market.
02:53And Pierre Lebrun reported yesterday.
02:57He said regarding Vincent Trocek, the asking price from New York is a first round pick and a prospect.
03:04That's for Trocek, a first round pick and a prospect.
03:07Larkin's better than Trocek by miles.
03:10People keep talking about the Red Wings aren't going to get much value in return for Dylan Larkin.
03:16I think they will. It's just a question of when does it happen and how desperate are teams going to
03:22get to try to make this deal?
03:24Because eventually you crack and you go ahead and you do it. Chicago did it for Byron Bowen.
03:29You go back and look at the trade deadline and there were some moves that were made like, wow, that
03:32was, geez, you got all that for that?
03:35Yep.
03:35I mean, Justin Falk went for a first round pick to come to the Detroit Red Wings.
03:40So prices are high on players.
03:42And with the draft being tonight, I mean, you're seeing different names being mentioned.
03:47Now I've seen San Jose's name being thrown in the ring.
03:49Are they trying to get in the Larkin sweepstakes?
03:52You know, they have one of the top picks in the draft.
03:56It's really interesting.
03:58I find it hard to believe that you can get Larkin, that you can trade Larkin for the second pick
04:03overall in the draft.
04:04But if you could, yes, please, because that player will play right away and has an incredibly high upside if
04:11you can do that.
04:12But this story with Dylan Larkin, it's going to heat up this afternoon as we get closer and closer to
04:17tonight's draft.
04:18The first round of the draft, and the Red Wings don't have a first round pick, obviously.
04:22But they've got the number one asset out there in the trade market, and it's Dylan Larkin.
04:27Meanwhile, calls are coming in on Alex DeBrinckit, according to David Pignota of NHL Network.
04:32DeBrinckit is eligible for an extension, is in the last year of his deal, $7.875 million.
04:39He has a 16-team no-trade list.
04:43Next, the fourth period lists six teams that they think could be making a run at Alex DeBrinckit.
04:51The Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, the New Jersey Devils, Seattle Kraken, the Buffalo Savers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
05:01So I'll just, I mean, isn't it obvious?
05:03Larkin, DeBrinckit, and Kosa to Toronto for tonight's number one overall pick.
05:13That's, what?
05:17You know what, I would say that's too much.
05:18Would you?
05:19Yeah, it's too much to give up for that.
05:22Free up all that cap space, get Gavin McKenna, let's go.
05:27Yeah, I don't even know if McKenna's going to go first overall.
05:29And I don't even know Toronto's cap situation.
05:32I'm giving him a ton of salary.
05:34You're having some fun there.
05:35Yes.
05:35Yeah, look, we talked briefly yesterday about it.
05:38I don't want to move on from DeBrinckit.
05:40I like Alex DeBrinckit a lot.
05:41I think he embodies everything you want in a hockey player.
05:45I just wish he was 6'3", but he's not.
05:48He still puts the puck in the net with regularity.
05:50He sticks up for himself.
05:52He's tough as nails.
05:53He does all the things you want out of a hockey player.
05:56And I want to continue to build around him.
06:00I know he's only around for another year here, and then he hits free agency.
06:03But I want to start building this team correctly, and I want DeBrinckit to be part of it.
06:08I do, too.
06:09And if they're really – we talked about this yesterday, so I apologize for those of you that it's repeat.
06:15But not everybody listens to every second of every show.
06:19If they're really feeling legitimate calls on DeBrinckit and considering trading him, then they really are going into a full
06:26-scale rebuild.
06:26I mean, where are the goals going to come from?
06:29They're not trying to win now.
06:30And I'm not sure that's not the best direction to go.
06:33It feels like the team's hit a dead end.
06:36It is the most unattractive reality out there that they might have to start all over again.
06:42And they have an opportunity right now to load up on resources to start a rebuild.
06:45And it's a terrible thing to have to tell a fan base.
06:49It is a terrible thing to have to try and sell because we've been through years of rebuilding, and it's
06:56netted nothing.
06:57And starting all over by cashing in assets, I'm not convinced it's not the best way to go.
07:04Well, there's also this report from Chris Johnston.
07:06You mentioned we've got some adjacent stuff with Larkin.
07:08He says, I don't think at this point in time Zach Wierenski is willing to commit long-term to Columbus.
07:14He certainly is willing to go back and play and honor his contract, but it will leave management with a
07:20big decision.
07:22So Zach Wierenski, the outstanding defenseman with Columbus, I mean, I continue to look at him and say, oh, please,
07:30is there a way?
07:31Is there a way to get him?
07:33Well, that would be a, hey, Dylan, we're bringing you a buddy.
07:38As was once said.
07:40But do they have enough?
07:41Do the Red Wings have enough to offer Columbus to let them trade?
07:45And I think they do.
07:46I mean, they have to gut a lot of what they have prospect-wise, but would it be worth it?
07:51You know, if you want to give up on Brad Zick-Negard and Nate Danielson and Sebastian Kosa and then
07:56offer another first-round pick, is that enough to get Zach Wierenski?
08:00I mean, you'd be talking about three former first-round picks and then giving you a first-round pick.
08:04Yeah, I think it would be.
08:072-4-8-5-3-9-9-7-9-7-9-7.
08:09Let's go to Wally in Norton Shores.
08:11You are next.
08:12Hello, Wally.
08:14Well, I'm not in Norton Shores.
08:16I'm in, well, Lake Michigan, but that's okay.
08:19Okay.
08:19I don't know why we got Norton Shores, but.
08:21That's all right, man.
08:22That's all right.
08:24The Dylan Larkin trade.
08:26Okay, let's say we trade him and we get a draft pick.
08:29Then, uh, the Brinkin leaves.
08:32And then Gibson might leave.
08:34And then Kane will definitely leave.
08:36So we're going to get all these draft picks and we will have, and I've been a fan since 1959.
08:41Oh.
08:42So, and then we're going to have another 10-year rebuild.
08:46That's my opinion.
08:47Well, that's what would happen.
08:48Obviously, if you're going to have to trade, if you're going to, you already have to trade Larkin.
08:52And if you have, if you end up trading to Brinkin, it's absolutely a full-on rebuild.
08:56And I don't know if, I don't think Red Wing fans are going to be patient enough for that, even
08:59though it may be the right thing.
09:01And I think the Red Wing fans would definitely say, okay, if we're going to go through that, we don't
09:05want to go through that with Steve Eisenman.
09:07You know, Stevie, Stevie Y will never get fired.
09:11Stevie Y will have to be fired.
09:13I disagree.
09:13I disagree.
09:14I disagree.
09:15Well, let me just tell you, I know someone in the Illich industry that works there.
09:21And their exact words to me is, Stevie Y, the only way he leaves, if he resigns, he will never
09:26be fired.
09:29Well, I mean, with all respect to you, we have no idea who it is.
09:36We have no idea who you are.
09:37We have no idea whether that's true or not.
09:39So we'll take it with a grain of salt.
09:42And that might be somebody in the Illich organization giving their opinion.
09:49Right?
09:50So, I mean, what do we, I can't imagine that that's true.
09:54So, now, would I have moved on?
09:58Yeah.
09:59I'm really, I want Stevie to somehow pull off an elite trade that makes us go, okay, but.
10:09Yeah.
10:09I mean, is it possible that this is the last trade he makes?
10:13You know, that after the smoke clears on this offseason, that they just, okay, now we're, you know, we're in
10:20a position we're in.
10:20In part because of what you've done as our general manager, and now we're going to move on.
10:24Are you asking, is it possible that they're going to move on from Steve Eisenman after he makes this trade
10:30and before next season?
10:31Yeah.
10:32I would say no.
10:34I think if they were decided to move on, they'd want the new guy to make the trade.
10:39I just wonder if it starts a domino effect.
10:41You know, because at that point, then if DeBrinckit comes out and says, yeah, I want to be moved, too,
10:46then you've got to start thinking about, okay, who's the right guy to lead this franchise forward?
10:50In the meantime, you could also get the right deal done with Dylan Larkin and hopefully keep this team being
10:58competitive.
10:58Or make them competitive because they haven't been once March hits.
11:022-4-8-5-3-9-97-97, we've got open lines.
11:06And, of course, Pistons in the headlines as they make a trade today.
11:11Isaiah Joe is now a Detroit Piston guard from Oklahoma City for two second round picks.
11:18That is it.
11:19I love that trade.
11:21I love that trade.
11:22Let's celebrate.
11:22Fireball shots?
11:24No.
11:25Not just yet.
11:28We'll get to your phone calls and feedback coming up on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
