00:00Watch this guy. He's no door-to-door salesman.
00:03I mean, what exactly do you sell at half an hour before midnight?
00:06No, not a seller, just a dodgy fella.
00:09But he's bought himself a ticket to trouble
00:11by messing with the doorbell detectives.
00:16Across the UK, millions of our doorbell cameras
00:19are zooming in on shameless criminals.
00:23Oh, my God! There's two men at my mum and dad's house.
00:26We watched them rip it all out in minutes.
00:29It was heartbreaking.
00:32But this video evidence is arming a new kind of crime fighter.
00:37I could see Ethan's bathroom door. It was, like, now shut.
00:40You could hear the toilet flush.
00:42Oh, my goodness.
00:44I just knew I had to get him.
00:46If I have to follow this guy, I will follow him.
00:48Oi, what are you doing here?
00:49I've caught up with him, and now he's going to come to justice.
00:52Confronting thieves on your own is dangerous.
00:55Someone coming into your house is really scary.
00:57Oi!
00:58But sharing intel with neighbours can bring justice.
01:02It just brings the community together.
01:04Definitely, we are a bit safer.
01:08Nationwide, doorbell detectives are taking a shot
01:11at putting the bad guys behind bars.
01:13Had that recording never been there,
01:16I don't think anybody would have ever been caught.
01:18Textbook doorbell detective.
01:24Welcome to Doorbell Detectives,
01:26where criminals reach the end of the road
01:28thanks to your home cameras.
01:32Today, we'll hear how Harley had his beloved caravan looted
01:36in the middle of the night.
01:38He put the shovel through the side window
01:40and smash his way in.
01:41It's heartbreaking, really.
01:42You work for things, and things get broken into.
01:46Doorbell detective Andy's peaceful Sunday is shattered...
01:50Oh, you little...
01:51..by a gang of wannabe bike thieves.
01:54I thought, I'm going to have to get down there
01:55before he does any mile damage.
01:57Just in the box of shorts.
01:59And it's an impressive sight.
02:01And former police inspector Anton Sullivan
02:04plays hide-and-seek with Lyn's camper van.
02:07Good luck trying to find me.
02:09I'll see you in a bit.
02:10Or maybe not.
02:19It is midnight in Shildon, County Durham,
02:23and this serial criminal has his eyes on Harley's caravan.
02:30He eventually gets in to see what he can steal.
02:35Luckily, he leaves relatively empty-handed.
02:40Harley, it's a terrible thing.
02:42You don't touch another man's caravan.
02:44Them's the rules, right?
02:46Yeah.
02:46How did you first find out that something had been going on?
02:49So, I woke up, I had a text message off my dad,
02:51and it was basically to see that someone had been in the caravan.
02:53He'd boarded it up so I could go down and see from there.
02:56So, tell me about your caravan,
02:59because, you know, caravans are special, aren't they?
03:01How long have you had it?
03:02So, we've only had it a couple of months.
03:03We've got a little cheap caravan to start with,
03:05just to try it out, see if we liked it.
03:07We'd been away that weekend, parked it up.
03:09So, where do you go in it?
03:11What's the attraction?
03:12The Lake District, and just anywhere, really,
03:14just so we can go for a nice walk and just chill out,
03:16get away from work and things like that.
03:17OK, so a little space of your own,
03:19a little home away from home.
03:21And it is like your own home, isn't it?
03:23It's like your home being broken into.
03:25Yeah, it's just, it's heartbreaking, really,
03:27when you work for things and things get broken into,
03:29you don't feel safe anymore in your own little environment.
03:31Yeah, absolutely.
03:33Where is it parked?
03:34When we're looking at those pictures, whereabouts is it?
03:36So, it's outside my mum and dad's house,
03:38a nice little quiet street, there's only ten houses,
03:40not many people really go up and down it,
03:42a little cul-de-sac, so relatively safe.
03:44Well, it's the sort of place you'd look at it and think,
03:46well, there'll be no problem here.
03:47Is that tucked out of the way?
03:48Yeah, nothing there.
03:49It's right off the main road, so there's nothing there.
03:51Very quiet.
03:53Right.
03:54Take us back to that moment, then,
03:56when you first saw the footage.
03:58What went through your mind?
04:00Just a bit of adrenaline, really.
04:01You think you've got the person.
04:03You come, bring a shovel back,
04:06and he was drinking a bottle of wine,
04:07and I watched him throwing it into the bush.
04:10So, we had the bottle,
04:11my dad found the shovel,
04:12and we'd seen him rubbing his head.
04:14We'd cut his head on the window,
04:16so we'd had a bit of skin on the window.
04:18Tell me about the damage he did to the caravan.
04:21He put the shovel through the side window,
04:23smashed his way in,
04:25couldn't get himself right in,
04:26but he reached in,
04:27he'd see he'd got a blanket and a pillow.
04:30OK, so the things he took
04:32weren't of massive value,
04:34but what was in the caravan itself
04:36was the stuff that he missed?
04:38Yeah, so about a foot further in for the caravan,
04:40and that would tell he was there.
04:41So, if he'd reached that little bit further,
04:42he'd have got him and said,
04:43I'd tell you,
04:43but he's just grabbed whatever he's got
04:46and disappeared.
04:50So, you've called the cops,
04:51and you're hopeful
04:53that they might be able to catch this fella,
04:55but what Harley didn't know
04:57was that this wasn't an isolated incident.
05:00In fact, this fella
05:02had been at it all over town,
05:05and we'll be finding out
05:06exactly what happened
05:07a little bit later.
05:12The damage that thieves can do
05:14in the process
05:15of getting what isn't theirs
05:16can be devastating.
05:18If they see it,
05:19they're going to have it,
05:20whatever it takes,
05:21even if it's in broad daylight
05:22and in full view.
05:24Andy's from Bradford.
05:25He found this out the hard way
05:27one Sunday morning.
05:28Have a look.
05:297.30 to be precise.
05:32Three goons in black
05:34on the rob,
05:35and their target
05:37is Andy's motorbike.
05:39They have come tooled up,
05:41literally.
05:42A set of bolt cutters
05:43to try and remove that lock.
05:45But time is of the essence.
05:47They resort to brute force.
05:50Andy tells them
05:52what's what through the doorbell.
05:54Andy doesn't even need
05:57to get dressed
05:58to give them
05:58a dressing down.
06:02He's out
06:03in his boxers,
06:05and they are off
06:06like a dose of salts.
06:08Andy joins me now,
06:10fully clothed,
06:11from his home
06:11in Bradford.
06:13Andy,
06:14it's good to have you with us,
06:15and it's lovely to see you
06:16with your clothes on.
06:20Sunday mornings
06:20are supposed to be
06:21for lying,
06:22putting your feet up,
06:23having a cup of coffee.
06:24That was a rude awakening,
06:26wasn't it?
06:26Well, I was already up.
06:27I was just in the bathroom,
06:28and I heard all the sirens
06:29and everything going up,
06:31and the doorbell,
06:32which is what saved it.
06:33I mean,
06:33that alarm is pretty piercing,
06:35isn't it?
06:36Where's that coming from?
06:37That's actually coming
06:37from the bike.
06:38It makes quite a loud noise.
06:40So you're in the bathroom.
06:42I'm going to say
06:42you're probably shaving
06:43at that point,
06:44are you?
06:44Yeah.
06:45OK.
06:47And then the alarm goes off.
06:49What's going through your mind?
06:51Well,
06:51I ignored it at first,
06:52because I thought,
06:53oh,
06:53somebody's set off
06:54their house alarm,
06:55you know,
06:55it does happen
06:56on our street a lot.
06:57And then I was thinking
06:58to myself,
06:59no,
06:59that's outside my house.
07:01Then my doorbell
07:02popped straight up
07:03on my phone,
07:04and so I grabbed my phone
07:05and looked at it,
07:06and there's this guy
07:07with the bolt cuppers
07:08trying to smash
07:10one of the disc brake locks
07:12off at the back.
07:13I shouted at him,
07:14I made a little
07:15****.
07:16He looked up
07:17and he just
07:18carried on doing it
07:18and so I thought,
07:19I'm going to have to
07:19get down there
07:20before he does
07:21any more damage.
07:23Hey!
07:24Just in the box of shorts.
07:25Well, yeah,
07:26and it's an impressive sight.
07:29Some choice language
07:30to get the message
07:32across to them.
07:33What was your plan
07:34at that stage?
07:35What were you hoping
07:36to achieve?
07:37I don't know.
07:38To be honest,
07:38I suppose if it had come to it
07:40I'd have confronted him
07:42face to face,
07:43but luckily he ran off.
07:44I don't know if it were
07:45luckily for me
07:45or for him.
07:46I mean,
07:47you're there in your boxes
07:48as you say,
07:48he's got a set of bolt cutters.
07:50It could have gone badly wrong.
07:52OK, so you chased them off.
07:54Was there any dialogue?
07:55Did you hear back
07:56from them in any way?
07:57No.
07:58Well, they did shout
07:59that they would be back.
08:01I said,
08:01good luck on that,
08:02you know,
08:02but some of the other neighbours
08:03were shouting at them.
08:06What?
08:06What are you doing?
08:08So you get a bit
08:09of vocal support then
08:10from the neighbours,
08:11which is nice.
08:12How have things changed
08:13in the community
08:14since that's happened?
08:15Has this brought you
08:16together at all?
08:17Yeah, there's a lot of people
08:18now on the road
08:19that have got
08:21the doorbells
08:22and CCTV.
08:23Every house has got it now
08:24front and back.
08:26Does that give you
08:26a sense of security?
08:28Yes.
08:29Yeah, it does.
08:29Yeah, yeah.
08:30It's terrific stuff.
08:32I mean,
08:32I know you reported it
08:33to the police, Andy.
08:34Has anything come of that?
08:36No.
08:37No.
08:37That happened
08:38on the Sunday
08:39and I was quite surprised
08:41that the police attended.
08:43But then on the Wednesday
08:44I got an email from them
08:45that they weren't
08:46pursuing to investigate
08:47it any more,
08:48you know.
08:49You must have been glad
08:50that you had the camera
08:51installed though.
08:52Oh, yeah.
08:53Well done with that, yeah.
08:54Well, Andy, listen,
08:55I'm a biker too.
08:57I am just pleased
08:58that you managed
08:58to stop them
08:59before they did
08:59too much damage.
09:00Respect to you
09:01for doing what you did.
09:02Yeah, right.
09:10It's been a top choice
09:11for UK holidaymakers
09:13for well over a century
09:14and the popularity
09:15of caravans
09:16and motorhomes
09:17has never been stronger.
09:20But shockingly,
09:21around 4,000
09:22are nicked every year
09:23and with the average price
09:25around £20,000,
09:27these handy homes
09:27on wheels
09:28are very pricey
09:29to replace.
09:33Luckily,
09:34our Anton
09:34is never in holiday mode
09:36and he's armed
09:37with all the tips needed
09:38to send the thieves packing.
09:40Caravans and campervans
09:42offer their owners
09:42unlimited freedom,
09:44the promise of the open road
09:46and spontaneous
09:47weekend getaways.
09:48and a quick getaway
09:49is exactly
09:50what the criminals
09:51are after.
09:52Mobile homes
09:53hold a lot in value
09:54and it's not just
09:55the vehicle
09:56and the contents,
09:57but it's the irreplaceable
09:59priceless memories.
10:00All things
10:01that criminals
10:02won't think twice about
10:03as they drive away.
10:05Anton's come to meet Lynn
10:07and her four-wheeled companion.
10:12Want to come for a spin?
10:14Room for a small one.
10:17This is amazing.
10:21Why did you buy the camper van?
10:23I bought it
10:24to take my mind off
10:26losing my husband.
10:28Is it fair to say
10:29this vehicle means
10:29everything to you?
10:30Yeah.
10:31It's unique.
10:32It's my pride and joy.
10:37They're very popular.
10:38A lot of these campers
10:39have been stolen
10:41but they do steal them
10:42and take them abroad as well.
10:47Take it this is you, is it?
10:48Yeah.
10:49So,
10:51let's have a closer look.
10:52Show me what you've got.
10:55That is impressive.
10:57I can't think of anything
10:59I don't have in my house
11:00that you haven't got in here.
11:01There's a tool.
11:02So,
11:02what am I looking at here?
11:04A toaster,
11:06an air fryer,
11:07a kettle,
11:08fold away table,
11:11which hides the microwave.
11:13I don't know how you've done it.
11:14I even do the servicing myself.
11:19How do you feel about the security
11:21and where you park it?
11:23Verified.
11:24Have you ever been
11:25the victim of crime?
11:26Yeah.
11:27Someone tried breaking into my van.
11:28I was sat eating my tea
11:30and when they couldn't get in my flat,
11:32they tried breaking into my van.
11:33That experience,
11:35how did it make you feel?
11:36More aware
11:37and more nervous.
11:39What security measures
11:41has Lynne put in place so far?
11:43Steering lock
11:44and a cut lock
11:46on the gear lever.
11:48They're really good deterrents.
11:49Yeah.
11:50They're old-fashioned,
11:51but they're actually really effective.
11:53Very promising.
11:55Lynne,
11:56the other thing that
11:57I notice about the back of your van
11:59is you've got this great big window here
12:01and I can see straight in.
12:02So I can come in
12:03and even if it was at night,
12:04I'd have a torch
12:05and I can see
12:06loads of interesting things in there.
12:09Yeah.
12:09I mean,
12:09they're all things
12:10that for a criminal
12:11would be quickly accessible
12:14and be of value.
12:16Something that I need to approach, yeah.
12:20The other thing
12:21that's really, really good
12:22is having your own CCTV
12:23if there isn't any
12:25covering the space.
12:26Yeah.
12:27If we fit this camera
12:28to the front of your home there,
12:30it's going to cover
12:31where you park your car, isn't it?
12:33Yeah.
12:33So we should go and have a look
12:34and test it.
12:35So just put that there.
12:37So it's covering
12:38the front of your property
12:40and it's keeping your pride and joy
12:42right where you can see it.
12:44Brilliant.
12:45One thing you could consider using
12:47is this device,
12:48which is an alarm
12:50that activates
12:51if anybody tries
12:52to get into your vehicle.
12:55So if I was to then
12:56try and open the door,
12:57it'll go off.
12:59Okay.
13:00And that would alert you
13:02so if you're sat in your house
13:03having a brew,
13:04you could see straight away
13:06something has happened
13:07to your van
13:07so you get an immediate alert.
13:11Another useful piece of technology
13:13and I really subscribe to these
13:14are trackers
13:15and you can see the size of this one.
13:17It's tiny.
13:18You can put it hidden
13:19anywhere inside your vehicle
13:21and what that means is
13:22if your vehicle gets stolen
13:24you can see
13:25exactly where that vehicle
13:27has gone.
13:27All right.
13:28Time to put the tracker
13:30to the test.
13:31I hope Anton's not planning
13:32to go to the seaside.
13:34Lynn,
13:35good luck trying to find me.
13:37I'll see you in a bit.
13:38I'll see you in a bit.
13:38Or maybe not.
13:43I've never seen it
13:44drive away before.
13:53I think I've got an idea
13:55where he might be.
14:01I think I've been detected.
14:10It looks like you found me
14:11so I'll take it
14:12the tracker worked.
14:13Yeah, brilliant.
14:14Right.
14:15Time to get the kettle on
14:16I reckon.
14:16Yeah, I reckon so.
14:23Have a look at this.
14:256am in West Yorkshire
14:27and a gang of masked men
14:29is surrounding
14:30this pick-up truck.
14:31There's two in the road
14:32and one by the passenger's door.
14:35But there is no sign
14:37of anyone
14:37with that tell-tale
14:38wire relay antenna.
14:41We also know
14:42that the owners
14:43keep their key
14:44in a Faraday box.
14:46Here's the theory.
14:47The gang cloned the key
14:48on an earlier date.
14:50That means
14:51they can now get
14:52into the car
14:53within seconds
14:55and they can drive off
14:56in a flash.
14:58Sadly,
14:59these guys
15:00still haven't been picked up.
15:03Anton,
15:04so frustrating
15:05to see
15:05that thieves
15:06can target
15:07a vehicle like that
15:08and get access
15:09so quickly.
15:10But why would they go
15:12for a pick-up,
15:13a work vehicle
15:14particularly?
15:15They are quite
15:16an attractive proposition
15:17for car thieves,
15:18especially organised ones.
15:20One,
15:20there's a big resale market
15:22for these stolen vehicles.
15:24Two,
15:24they're often
15:25sent abroad
15:26to places like Africa
15:27and the Middle East
15:28because they're very,
15:29very sought after
15:30in those locations.
15:31And then the other reason
15:32criminals will steal them
15:34is to use
15:35in committing other crime.
15:36So examples of that
15:37would be
15:38ram raids
15:39or using these vehicles
15:40to tow
15:40ATMs out of the wall.
15:42It's something
15:43that we've seen
15:43quite commonly
15:44out there on streets.
15:46Also,
15:47you know,
15:47there's over 600,000
15:49land these out
15:49in the streets
15:50of the UK
15:50and they're often
15:51used as business
15:52vehicles for tradespeople.
15:54So sometimes
15:55they'll have tools
15:56and all sorts of equipment
15:57in there
15:57that are also
15:58an attractive proposition
15:59to thieves.
16:00Yeah,
16:00a bit of a bonus
16:01if they land
16:01the tools as well.
16:03I suppose
16:04it's worth
16:04being aware of that
16:05if you're looking
16:06to buy one of these vehicles
16:08that they could be
16:09the product
16:10of one of these thefts.
16:11Yes,
16:11you can see online
16:12that there's lots
16:13of these vehicles
16:14for sale
16:14and I would say
16:15if you are buying
16:16from anybody
16:17other than a proper
16:19formal garage,
16:21do your homework.
16:22So check the history
16:23of the vehicle.
16:24You can do a lot
16:24of this online now.
16:25So the service history,
16:27the MOT,
16:28even check with the DVLA
16:29to make sure
16:30that the history matches
16:31the vehicle
16:31that you're looking at.
16:32Also,
16:33the signs such as
16:35the number plates
16:36can be a clue.
16:37If the screws
16:37don't match
16:38or the scratches
16:39or marks
16:40that would suggest
16:41plates have been
16:41taken on and off,
16:42don't be looking
16:43to buy these vehicles
16:44from some guy
16:45in a car park
16:46in the evening,
16:48cash.
16:48If it's too good
16:49to be true,
16:50it often is.
16:50And the risk is
16:51if you buy a vehicle
16:52that subsequently
16:53turns out to be stolen,
16:54you're going to lose
16:55the car
16:55and you'll lose
16:56your money.
16:57Thanks a lot,
16:58Anton.
17:03You know,
17:04sometimes it can seem
17:05like thieves
17:06are actually becoming
17:06more brazen,
17:08seemingly not bothered
17:09about committing crimes
17:11in broad daylight.
17:12Have a look
17:12at this footage
17:13from Oliver
17:14and Marie's
17:15doorbell camera
17:16in South London.
17:17There we are.
17:18What a lovely
17:19looking street.
17:20But this chap
17:21is out in broad daylight
17:22doing a bit
17:23of sinister shopping.
17:24It's like a supermarket
17:26sweep,
17:27except he's taking parcels
17:29from other people's
17:30doorsteps.
17:31There he goes.
17:33He's taking the whole lot
17:34and these are big packages.
17:36He is hard to miss.
17:38And just like that,
17:40he's off down the road
17:42again.
17:43Unbelievable.
17:44Well, that porch,
17:45as we say,
17:45belonged to Oliver
17:47and Marie
17:47and they join me now.
17:49Hello, guys.
17:49Hello.
17:50Hello.
17:51Let's find out a little bit
17:52about you first off.
17:54Okay.
17:55What's the set up
17:56in your household?
17:57Well, we just moved there
17:59a month before that happened.
18:02For London,
18:02it's very peaceful
18:03and very much
18:05a community as well
18:06and that's what we realised
18:08as well after all
18:08this happening.
18:09Okay, set the scene
18:10for me on this day.
18:11Where are you guys
18:12at this time of day?
18:14Well, we were both at work.
18:16You were doing some training
18:17for a new job.
18:17Yeah, so literally
18:18I just got a promotion
18:20in a new role,
18:21so congratulations.
18:23Yeah, thank you.
18:24But I was sort of
18:25in the middle of training
18:26and, you know,
18:28we both have the app
18:30on our phones
18:30and obviously when
18:31we have parcels coming
18:33it says, you know,
18:34someone's at your front door
18:35and, of course,
18:36we then see the thumbnail
18:37of the trolley
18:38and we're like,
18:39what's going on here?
18:42What was it that he's taken?
18:44Two 25 kilo bags
18:46of cat litter
18:48of all things.
18:50He turns up, what,
18:51less than 10 minutes later
18:53after they've been delivered.
18:55So were you watching
18:56this happen in real time?
18:58In real time, yeah.
18:58And we were texting each other
18:59as it was happening,
19:01you know, like saying,
19:02is this actually happening
19:03right now?
19:04So your cat litter's gone.
19:05Yeah.
19:06There's a man walking down
19:07the street in broad daylight
19:09with a shopping trolley
19:10and a bright blue beanie hat on.
19:13It's quite distinctive, yeah.
19:14Yeah.
19:15I mean, he's not going to be missed.
19:16What did you do
19:17with that footage, Oliver?
19:18Within the hour,
19:21I uploaded it
19:22onto a community website
19:23and very, very quickly
19:26it got shared around,
19:27commented on, viewed
19:29and it was a sort of
19:31very positive response.
19:32Found out that this guy
19:33had done the rounds
19:35a little bit on the day as well
19:36and stole from others as well.
19:39One of them is Frankie
19:40and Frankie joins us
19:42on the telephone right now.
19:43Frankie, how are you doing?
19:45Hello, I'm fine.
19:46Tell us what happened to you.
19:47My dad passed away
19:49two and a half years ago now
19:52and on the anniversary
19:54of my dad's death,
19:57he passed away in the street
19:58so we go and leave flowers
20:00on the spot that he passed away at
20:03and it happens to be
20:05like next to my friend's house.
20:07So we, as usual,
20:09me, my mum and sister
20:10went and put some flowers
20:12onto the fence
20:13next to where my dad passed away.
20:15We had some very personal messages
20:17that we'd handwrote
20:18and we cable tied them
20:20to the fence.
20:21For me, it's quite personal
20:24that, you know,
20:25we can go to the spot
20:26where he had his final breaths
20:27and it's just kind of like
20:29a special spot for us.
20:32And then less than an hour later,
20:34my friend phoned me
20:35and she said,
20:36I'm so sorry to tell you
20:37but someone has stolen your flowers
20:40and I was just absolutely horrified.
20:44Let's just have a quick look
20:45because we've got the footage
20:46up now, Frankie.
20:48You can see clearly
20:49in the video
20:50that the guy reads the messages
20:52so it's very clear
20:53that they are flowers
20:54for someone
20:55who has passed away.
20:57He unties the flowers
20:59and just walks away.
21:03My friend found
21:04all our handwritten notes
21:05thrown on the floor.
21:06What did you think
21:07about what he'd done?
21:10I was just in complete shock.
21:12Yeah, it's just a small
21:13bunch of flowers
21:13but to us
21:14that's a really personal
21:16kind of moment for us,
21:17a personal place.
21:18You know,
21:19that's quite a painful day
21:20for us as it is
21:21so to have that happen
21:22on the day
21:23it's just so upsetting.
21:25This is what I can't understand.
21:27What is he going to do
21:29with those flowers?
21:30To be honest,
21:31I think he probably
21:31just maybe threw them
21:32on the floor.
21:33You know,
21:34I think he probably
21:35stole it just for stealing's sake.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Listen,
21:38thanks for chatting to us, Frankie
21:39and I hope that you do
21:40find a way with your family
21:42to remember your dad.
21:45Oliver and Marie,
21:46it feels like
21:47he hasn't even thought
21:49about what the target is
21:49but if it's available
21:51in any shape or form
21:52he's going to nick it?
21:53Yeah,
21:53it's going to get taken.
21:54Marie,
21:55where are we now?
21:56Are the police aware of this
21:58and are they taking action?
21:59It's not a priority for police
22:01to go after these cases
22:03so it's quite quickly
22:04been closed down
22:06but of course,
22:07I mean,
22:07I'm assuming if they find him
22:09and do something
22:10then we'll get to know.
22:12So until that moment
22:13we can assume
22:14he's still out there,
22:16possibly still doing
22:16this sort of thing,
22:17everybody needs to be
22:18wide awake to it.
22:19Exactly, yeah.
22:20Well,
22:21the very simple message here
22:22is I think that
22:23until action's taken
22:25we all need to be
22:26good doorbell detectives
22:28keeping our technological
22:29eyes and ears
22:30very much open.
22:31Exactly.
22:32Yeah.
22:36Hi,
22:37I've got a delivery for you.
22:39Doorbell cameras
22:40can be great.
22:41Where shall I leave it?
22:42Can you just put it
22:43in the porch?
22:44But when the whole family
22:46gets the ping
22:46at the same time,
22:48spare a thought
22:49for the poor delivery driver.
22:50Can you just leave it
22:51in front of the door?
22:52Yeah,
22:52yeah,
22:53leave it to the left
22:54of the door.
22:55Tuck it away
22:56near the door.
22:57He just needs
22:58one clear instruction,
22:59people.
23:00In front of you,
23:01can you just tuck it
23:02to the...
23:03Tell him where
23:04to put the package.
23:07Bye.
23:11Earlier we met Harley
23:13who'd been the victim
23:14of a burglary
23:16when his caravan
23:17got broken into.
23:19He reported it
23:20to the police
23:21and it was D.C.
23:22Josh Tune
23:23from Durham Police's job
23:24to crack the case.
23:26Harley,
23:27good to have you back.
23:28Josh,
23:29what Harley
23:29could never have known
23:31was that his
23:32wasn't an isolated incident.
23:34In fact,
23:34this fella
23:34had been trying
23:35his luck for days.
23:37Yes,
23:37he attempted
23:38several burglaries
23:39that night
23:40and also managed
23:41to complete one as well.
23:42And this is the beauty
23:43of doorbell footage
23:44is that you can see
23:45a pattern of behaviour
23:47that's established
23:48and grown over
23:49a number of days.
23:49So it's more than just
23:51an isolated incident
23:52when somebody feels
23:53so alone.
23:54Yeah,
23:54that's correct,
23:55yeah.
23:55So tell me
23:56what you'd witnessed.
23:57What had you
23:57been aware of
23:59leading up to
24:00Harley's incident?
24:01We knew about
24:02Harley's incident.
24:03We also knew about
24:04a report where
24:05a woman
24:05had got out
24:06of the shower
24:07upon hearing
24:08somebody coming
24:08into her house
24:09and coming up the stairs.
24:10A husband then
24:11shorted him out.
24:12And a lot of people
24:14faced with that,
24:15you're in the shower,
24:16a strange man comes in,
24:18I mean,
24:18that would be something
24:19that would change
24:20your life forever.
24:20That's terrifying,
24:21yeah.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Let's have a look
24:22at that earlier incident
24:23now as it's captured
24:25on the doorbell.
24:26He starts out next door,
24:29okay,
24:29so he's trying
24:30the door handle,
24:32he's giving it
24:33a little shove
24:33with his shoulder.
24:34Is that intent,
24:36an attempted burglary?
24:38What would you call that?
24:39You'd class that
24:40as that and he
24:40could get charged
24:41for that?
24:41Absolutely, yeah.
24:42Okay,
24:42takes his bottle
24:43next door
24:44and this is where
24:45he does manage
24:46to gain entry.
24:49Talk me through
24:49what happens, Josh.
24:51He walks in
24:52after trying the door,
24:54finds it to be unlocked
24:55and he proceeds
24:56into the house.
24:56He then goes upstairs
24:58where the victim
25:00has just got out
25:00of the shower.
25:02When he comes
25:03into the room
25:04where she is,
25:05he says,
25:06I've just come in
25:06to tell you
25:07your door was open
25:10and she believes him.
25:12She believes him
25:13to be drunk
25:13and she believes him
25:14to be basically
25:15a bit of a drunken fool
25:16who's come in
25:17to tell her
25:17that she's left
25:17the door open
25:18because she says,
25:20I've done it before.
25:22Okay,
25:23he gets discovered.
25:24The next thing we see
25:25from a different camera
25:28her husband then
25:28shows him out.
25:30Turn around, buddy.
25:31Yeah, it's fine.
25:34I think that home run
25:35has been terribly
25:36understanding.
25:36There you are, buddy,
25:37he says,
25:37and on your way.
25:38I think I would have been
25:39using other words, possibly.
25:41That would have become
25:42as more of a shock
25:43to me, Josh.
25:44Yeah, but she then hears
25:45that other people
25:46have had the door handles
25:47tried by somebody
25:48in the street.
25:48She's then looked
25:49on her cameras
25:49and seen it's the same guy.
25:52Hello, police.
25:54Hi, I just want to
25:55report an incident
25:56that happened last night.
25:58They've been trying
25:59every single door
26:01before mine
26:02and then after mine.
26:05I haven't got it all
26:06on the doorbell.
26:11So she's given him
26:12the benefit of the doubt
26:13in that first instance
26:14and then once she's
26:16checked her evidence,
26:17checked the doorbells,
26:18it's clear that he's
26:19trying it on, basically.
26:20That's correct.
26:20And spinning her a yarn.
26:22Okay, we are clear
26:24at this point
26:25that it's the same guy
26:26for this incident
26:27and also for Harley's caravan.
26:30That's correct.
26:31What did you do next?
26:33We took statements
26:34from our victims
26:34and witnesses.
26:35We had Harley's caravan
26:36forensically examined
26:37because the suspect's
26:39forensics were left
26:40all over it.
26:42We gathered all the footage
26:43and he was arrested.
26:46What have you been
26:47doing last night?
26:48No, what?
26:49No, apparently you
26:50smashed the caravan window
26:51and you walked
26:51into someone's house
26:52last night.
26:56Josh, you took
26:58all of this evidence
26:59and you put it together.
27:01What was the outcome?
27:03He was charged
27:03with burglary,
27:05theft and two
27:06attempted burglaries.
27:07When he went to court
27:08he pleaded guilty
27:09to everything
27:10and he received
27:12three years
27:12and four months
27:13in prison.
27:14It seems like,
27:16Harley, your caravan
27:17was the latest
27:18in the string
27:19of offences for this guy.
27:21What's it like to know
27:21that he went behind bars?
27:23It's great.
27:23At least he's got
27:24you his due.
27:26And it was all because
27:27the community came together
27:28and they had that
27:29doorbell footage.
27:31Great stuff.
27:31Listen, thanks
27:32for speaking to us.
27:34Are you caravaning still?
27:35Yeah, still a caravan.
27:36I've got a new caravan now
27:37so we don't fall
27:38out of the summer
27:38to get away with it.
27:39Oh, well, I hope
27:40it stays safe and secure.
27:41And textbook
27:42doorbell detecting.
27:44Thank you so much
27:45for coming in, gents.
27:50If you want to be
27:52a doorbell detective
27:52the formula is very simple.
27:54Record it,
27:55report it
27:56and then share it
27:58with your neighbours.
27:59Maybe that way
27:59we'll all be
28:00a little bit safer.
28:18We'll see you next time.
