Director Allan Jacobsen and assistant director Brian Hatfield go behind the scenes of King of the Hill to discuss how its familiar characters have evolved while still holding onto the personalities fans have known for years.

From subtle changes in how the characters look and move to reflecting where they are at this point in their lives, Jacobsen and Hatfield reveal some of the creative thinking behind bringing Hank Hill and the residents of Arlen into a new era.

King of the Hill Season 15 is streaming now on Hulu.

00:00We've got Brian working in the background and Alan...
00:02Alan pontificating is what I would like to describe him.
00:13Prop.
00:18This is our situation here.
00:20Director AD, while I speak, he toils.
00:24I'm Alan Jacobson.
00:25My role on the show is I am one of the directors.
00:28I worked on the first season of King of the Hill, 1996.
00:32The original, original.
00:34It's a show that has years of history.
00:37You know, I love that Hank's aging, Peggy's aging.
00:40They're not like cartoon old people.
00:41You know what I mean?
00:42They're just, they're a few years older.
00:43I was younger than them when I worked on it the first time,
00:46and now I'm older than them.
00:47So life is unfair.
00:49How has Bobby changed since the original?
00:52He's kind of grown a little slimmer as he got older.
00:55He's tall like his dad.
00:56Maybe a slightly more handsome dude.
00:58I'm a man.
01:00But he's got the same features.
01:03A good testament to everyone involved, the art direction.
01:07If you line up, maybe you can, through the magic of editing,
01:11line up an old picture of Bobby with the Bobby we've got now,
01:16and you're like, that's him.
01:17He's still Bobby.
01:18Pam Adlon is still doing his voice.
01:20I can't believe you sold us out, dog.
01:23I saw you humping a couch cushion earlier, and I kept my mouth shut.
01:28Coming back for this, to be working with Wes, Wes Archer again,
01:32Greg Daniels, Mike.
01:34My only concern was that we honored the original.
01:38And I knew everyone would want to,
01:40but it's like a miracle to succeed at it.
01:43The reception is so cool.
01:45To see, like, you know, to have the internet not hate you.
01:49That's about the best.
