00:00The New York Rangers 2025-2026 season didn't produce a playoff appearance.
00:04It didn't produce the bounce back that the fan base expected.
00:07Instead, the Blue Shirts finished 34-39-9, last in the Metropolitan Division,
00:13and missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a second consecutive season.
00:16But even in a season filled with disappointment, the Rangers may have found something important.
00:21A 21-year-old winger with elite offensive instincts, a knack for finding space,
00:26and the ability to see plays develop before everyone else.
00:30Gabe Perreault began the season in Hartford.
00:32He ended it on the Rangers' top line, and after recording 12 goals and 15 assists in 49 NHL games,
00:39the question is no longer whether Perreault can play at this level.
00:42The question is, how much better can he become?
00:54Perreault arrived with one of the strongest offensive resumes of any player in the Rangers' system.
00:59He set the U.S. National Team Development Program's single-season scoring record,
01:03then produced 108 points in 73 games across two seasons at Boston College.
01:08But after a five-game NHL audition at the end of the 2024-2025 season,
01:14Perreault didn't make the Rangers' 2025 opening night roster.
01:17New York sent him to Hartford, and he responded.
01:20When the Rangers recalled him on December 17th, Perreault led Hartford in both goals and points.
01:26One night later, he scored his first NHL goal.
01:29It goes off of Perreault, head up by Lava, seam pass, stick on the ice, left skate.
01:37The demotion had not stopped his development.
01:39It had given him the puck, the minutes, and the confidence he needed before returning to the Big Apple.
01:45Perreault's rookie numbers tell part of the story.
01:47But to better understand how his game translated to the NHL and what his next step could look like,
01:52I spoke with someone who watched his development throughout the season,
01:55Johnny Lazarus, a host and digital reporter covering the New York Rangers for Daily Faceoff.
02:04So, Johnny, you watched Gabe Perreault make the transition from Hartford to the NHL.
02:08What parts of his game translated immediately, if anything, did?
02:12And why was he able to make an impact despite the questions that have followed him about his size, strength,
02:18and skating ability?
02:20I think for Gabe Perreault, similar to Adam Fox, the way they play the game, how smart they are on
02:24the ice.
02:25Like, whenever they're out there, you know, they are arguably the smartest player on the ice.
02:28So, you have to think at a certain point, that's going to transition, right?
02:32That's going to click.
02:33But for Gabe, I think the first 20-ish games, he was bouncing around the lineup a little bit,
02:37didn't find consistency.
02:38The Rangers had a lot of injuries.
02:39And there was, you know, a whole lot for him to figure out as a player.
02:43So, I wouldn't say he necessarily fit in right away.
02:46And I think he would tell you that as well.
02:48But that second half of the season, after the Olympic break, when, you know,
02:52Artemi Panarin was traded, he was put on a line with Mika Zibanejad and Alexi Lafreniere.
02:55It seemed like he really found his comfort level and his foot speed really caught up.
03:00Perreault's greatest asset was never supposed to be overwhelming speed or physical power.
03:05It was his processing, his patience with the puck, his ability to move defenders before moving the puck,
03:11and his instinct for placing teammates in advantageous positions.
03:15Before Perreault's season ended, Johnny compared those instincts to the traits that made Adam Fox so effective,
03:20seeing the game ahead of the play and finding options that don't appear open to everyone else.
03:26The talent was visible, but it took time before the production consistently followed.
03:31Perreault's first NHL stretch wasn't a straight line upward.
03:34There were quiet nights.
03:35There were moments when the size and pace of the league limited his time and space.
03:40But as his confidence grew, so did his willingness to attack.
03:43In a February victory over Pittsburgh, Perreault led the Rangers with seven scoring chances,
03:48six high-danger opportunities, and five rebound attempts.
03:52And after the Olympic break, his rookie season changed.
03:5519 of Perreault's 27 NHL points came during his final 28 games.
04:0050 of his 73 shots came during that same stretch.
04:03He wasn't only seeing the play more clearly, he was becoming more assertive with it.
04:07And the biggest development came when Mike Sullivan placed Perreault alongside Mika Zibanejad and Alexei Lafreniere.
04:14The three brought complementary skills.
04:16Zibanejad provided two-way responsibility and a veteran center's awareness.
04:20Lafreniere bought finishing, physicality, and direct attacks toward the net.
04:25Perreault connected them with his vision.
04:27In 262 five-on-five minutes together late in the season,
04:31the line controlled just over 53% of the high-danger chances and outscored opponents 14-10.
04:38So, Johnny, you mentioned Gabe playing with Mika Zibanejad and Alexei Lafreniere.
04:43What changed for him once he settled onto that line?
04:47And when you watched that group play together,
04:48how much was Gabe benefiting from playing with two established players?
04:52And also, how much was he also helping drive those players' success as well?
04:56Yeah, I'd actually go with the latter, Dexter.
04:58I think Gabe actually helped drive Mika Zibanejad and Alexei Lafreniere.
05:02There was a lot of talk about how Alexei Lafreniere looked so much better
05:05once Artemi Panarin was traded, just because Lafreniere got more opportunity, which is true.
05:09But I do think playing alongside a guy like Gabe Perreault really benefited Lafreniere.
05:15I mean, the amount of goals, I think Lafreniere had 12 goals in the final 25 games,
05:19and a lot of those felt like they were, you know, backdoor passes,
05:23finding open space, and Gabe Perreault making a nice little pass to find him in the open space.
05:27And he was able to finish.
05:29You know, I think one of the things that was really noticeable in the beginning
05:31when the three of them were playing together was finding out where to be.
05:35When you're Lafreniere and you're Mika Zibanejad and you're playing with a new guy,
05:39you got to know where to go for Gabe to find you.
05:42And I think as the season went on, they had a better understanding of,
05:45you know, the vision and just the instincts that Perreault had.
05:50And they knew where to be.
05:51They knew where to find him.
05:53They knew where to chip a puck in.
05:54And they knew the open space that he was going to be able to get the puck to them.
05:57So I think the more familiarity you have with players,
06:00the more comfortability you then get in return.
06:02Now, late in the season, the production became difficult to ignore.
06:06In March, Perreault recorded multiple points in three consecutive games,
06:10becoming just the second Rangers rookie in more than 30 years to produce a streak that long.
06:15Then, on April 4th, he delivered the defining performance of his rookie season.
06:21Robertson, for Zibanejad, centers one.
06:25They score!
06:27Gabe Perreault makes it 2-0.
06:30Seven games remaining, including this one.
06:33Brodzinski, they score!
06:35A tap-in power play goal for Gabe Perreault.
06:39Yes, here it is, Gabe Perreault.
06:42He scores!
06:44A hat-trick for the 20-year-old rookie.
06:47Perreault scored his first NHL hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over Detroit,
06:52and he became just the fourth Rangers rookie in the previous 30 years to record one.
06:56In a season defined by what the Rangers had lost,
06:59Perreault gave them something to look forward to.
07:02But one strong finish doesn't complete a player's development.
07:06However, it changes the expectations.
07:08Perreault has already identified the physical side of the game as a priority.
07:11He said that he wants to spend more time in the gym,
07:14add strength, and better prepare his body
07:16for the demands of a full NHL season.
07:18He even passed on the 2026 World Championship
07:21to begin his off-season work earlier.
07:23The next step for the young winger isn't simply producing more points.
07:27It's becoming more consistent when the puck isn't finding him,
07:31winning more battles, handling physical defenders,
07:33creating more shots in games where passing lanes disappear,
07:36and proving that he can maintain his impact over a full 82-game schedule.
07:41There will also be more competition.
07:43The Rangers added Pavel Dorofeyev and Oliver Bjorkstrand
07:46to a wing group that already includes Lafreniere and Perreault.
07:50Perreault has a path to a top-six role,
07:52but his line mates and exact position in the lineup are not automatic.
07:57So, Johnny, here we are now in the offseason,
07:59and I think the big question now is,
08:01what's the most important developmental step for Perreault in year two?
08:05And when you project beyond next season,
08:07do you view him as a player that the Rangers can build their next core around?
08:11A thousand percent.
08:13I think Gabe Perreault is arguably one of the most important players going into this season.
08:16He has a very big responsible role playing in the top six as a winger alongside
08:21Bob Frenier and Zabanejad,
08:22although there's a big debate online right now with Ranger fans
08:24if Gabe Perreault is going to play alongside Pavel Dorofeyev,
08:27the newly acquired forward from Vegas,
08:29who can put the puck in the back of the net.
08:31And obviously, if Gabe plays alongside Dorofeyev,
08:33who gets you 35 goals pretty much every year,
08:35that would be great to unlock Pavel Dorofeyev in a Ranger uniform.
08:39But I do think firmly Perreault should stay alongside Zabanejad and Lafreniere,
08:43and I would love to see Gabe Perreault getting consistent first power play reps.
08:48And that was something that Lafreniere and Kako,
08:51I think, struggled with in their time here as young players.
08:53They weren't put on the first power play unit consistently,
08:55which I think hinted their development a little bit.
08:58So if you put Gabe on that top unit,
09:00and you're looking at a pretty loaded unit right now with Adam Fox,
09:04you'd have a Lafreniere on there as well,
09:05Mika Zibanejad and Dorofeyev,
09:08the argument would be JT Miller being on the top unit for me.
09:11The next step in his progression and his development
09:12is getting him those consistent reps on the first power play unit.
09:16And I think most fans, most people would agree with that as well.
09:19There isn't complete agreement about Perreault's ceiling.
09:22Some prospect evaluators believe his hockey intelligence and playmaking
09:26give him first line even 100-point upside.
09:29Others question whether his size and skating could limit him
09:32to a less prominent role.
09:34That range of opinion shows both the excitement surrounding Perreault
09:37and the development still required before any final conclusion can be reached.
09:42Gabe Perreault's rookie season didn't answer every question about his future,
09:46but it did answer an important one.
09:48He belongs in the NHL.
09:50He learned his way out of Hartford.
09:52He produced when given top-line responsibility.
09:55And he displayed the kind of vision and offensive instincts
09:58the Rangers have struggled to develop internally.
10:00Now comes the harder part,
10:02turning a promising finish into a consistent standard.
10:05Because if Perreault can make that leap in year two,
10:08he won't just be a young player helping the Rangers' next core.
10:12He could become one of the players that core is built around.
