Senegal tightens asset disclosure rules amid Faye-Sonko rift

Senegal’s parliament has approved a law requiring the president, prime minister and speaker of parliament to declare and publish their assets both when taking office and when leaving, amid a growing political rift between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former prime minister Ousmane Sonko.

00:00Senegal's parliament has passed a law requiring the president, prime minister and speaker of the
00:05national assembly to declare and publish their assets both when taking office and when leaving
00:11it. The measure is aimed at strengthening transparency, a key promise of the authorities
00:16who came to power in 2024 after 12th year of Makisao's rule. But the reform comes amid a
00:22bitter political dispute between President Bashir Diomaifai and his former prime minister and mentor
00:28Osman Sonko. The two men have since split politically with supporters accusing each other of a lack of
00:34transparency in managing the state. The law was approved by 133 out of the 165 deputies despite
00:43divisions within the ruling PASTEF party. Justice Minister Musasa said the reform will be more
00:51effective as part of a broader consultation overhaul. FIRE has announced plans for a constitutional
00:57referendum although no debt has been set.
