00:48The question is no longer simply how long one carrier can stay at sea.
00:52It is whether America's warships are being pushed beyond their limits.
00:57The latest account comes from the USS Ben Fold, a guided missile destroyer operating with the USS George Washington Carrier
01:05Strike Group in the South China Sea.
01:07On July 24, the destroyer suffered a major engineering casualty affecting its power generation system.
01:15The result was a complete loss of power that lasted four days.
01:19During that period, the ship had limited potable water and reportedly lost access to its galley, restrooms, and climate control.
01:28The George Washington Carrier Strike Group stepped in to provide critical support, including meals.
01:34Eventually, the Ben Fold reached Subic Bay in the Philippines for repairs, before returning to its home port in Yokosuka,
01:42Japan on August 12.
01:43For the crew, four days without basic systems was a serious test, but accounts from families suggest it may not
01:51be an isolated problem.
01:53One active duty service member currently deployed alongside the USS Abraham Lincoln says the reports about conditions aboard the carrier
02:02are real.
02:03But according to that service member, the Lincoln is not alone.
02:07The sailor said their own ship is experiencing serious difficulties as well, although conditions have not yet deteriorated to the
02:15same level.
02:15And there is another problem. The deployment is still continuing.
02:20The service member said their ship has been at sea for months without seeing land because of the Iran conflict.
02:27That means crews are operating under prolonged wartime conditions, far beyond the normal rhythm of port calls, resupply, and recovery.
02:35One parent whose son spent 11 months aboard the Lincoln described conditions that became increasingly difficult during the deployment.
02:44Early in the mission, the ship's water system reportedly went down completely.
02:49Sailors could not shower or wash their clothes.
02:52When the system was eventually restored, shower access reportedly had to be tightly rationed.

03:07And eventually, the situation inside the restrooms became particularly alarming.
03:12The parents said toilets backed up and overflowed, leaving approximately half a foot of human waste across restroom floors used
03:21by hundreds of sailors.
03:22And then there is the USS George H. W. Bush.
03:26A message from someone connected to a sailor aboard the carrier described another grim picture.
03:32The sailor had recently returned to the United States because of a family emergency.
03:37According to the account relayed by the family member, the carrier had been at sea for 136 days.
03:44The description was blunt.
03:45Virtually no food, water or soap.
03:49Morale was reportedly low.
03:50And perhaps most concerning was the uncertainty.
03:54There was no clear end in sight for the deployment.
03:57One wife of a sailor currently aboard the Lincoln says her husband believes more people need to speak publicly about
04:04what is happening.
04:05According to her account, sailors asking their commanding officer for updates have reportedly been told not to worry about the
04:12future and instead to focus only on the present.
04:15But the crew is exhausted.
04:18The wife says sailors are getting no real days off and surviving on only a few hours of sleep.
04:24Her husband has also raised concerns about leadership and morale.
04:28And she says some sailors with more than 20 years of service are describing this as the worst deployment they
04:35have ever experienced.
04:36That is a striking assessment from personnel who have already spent decades at sea.
04:42Taken together, these accounts paint a picture that extends beyond one aircraft carrier.
04:47The Lincoln, the George H.W. Bush, the Benfold, different ships, different crews, but remarkably similar complaints.
04:56Exhaustion, supply problems, infrastructure failures, sanitation concerns, limited access to basic necessities, and deployments continuing without a clear end date.
05:07The Iran conflict has placed enormous demands on the U.S. military, but warships are not designed to operate indefinitely
05:15without adequate maintenance, resupply, and crew recovery.
05:19Every ship pushed beyond its normal deployment cycle faces increasing pressure on machinery.
05:25And every exhausted sailor faces another challenge, maintaining concentration during operations where a single mistake can have deadly consequences.
05:34The Pentagon has rejected some of the harshest descriptions of conditions aboard the Lincoln.
