00:02Hundreds of birds grounded as the risk of the deadly H5 bird flu claims another poultry
00:08event.
00:09It's been a difficult decision but obviously the welfare of the birds and biosecurity concerns
00:14have driven the decision and we think it's the right decision to make.
00:18The Perth Royal Show the latest to cancel its poultry competition, which usually attracts
00:23some 750 birds from around 80 different exhibitors.
00:27The decision disappointing, but necessary.
00:31Very low risk of an outbreak, but should there have been an outbreak that would have been
00:36impacted all of those birds potentially and we don't want to see that happen.
00:40There's now been more than 200 confirmed cases of the H5N1 bird flu across five Australian
00:46states, ten of those positive cases in WA.
00:50Cancelling the competition deemed the safest move.
00:53The poultry pavilion will instead be transformed into an information hub where showgoers can
00:59learn about birds and avian influenza.
01:02Meanwhile in the regions, the Albany poultry show will go ahead.
01:07Organisers electing to heighten biosecurity measures instead.
01:11We feel we're ten cases, we're not spreading, it's not getting out of hand until government
01:19authorities tell us that we need to stop, then we will keep going.
01:22We do know that overseas they have had challenges with their poultry competitions for the last
01:28few years, but we'll work obviously with Deep Herd and with our poultry exhibitors to
01:33have a look at what the future looks like.
01:34The show to go on without the birds.
