00:00Hello, good evening everybody over here at Hello Mag. I'm Gabby Roslyn and as usual now,
00:07I think the past couple of months, this might even be longer, we've been doing live for
00:12you Hello Let's Gab with some fantastic guests that we've had over the weeks. And tonight,
00:18oh my word, I mean really fantastic, we have got Frankie and Wayne Bridge together live
00:26from their home. Plus all the way from America, we've got John Barrowman will be joining us over
00:32here. And of course, we've got our snack attack queen, the wonderful Melissa Hemsley. So she will
00:39be on at the end with two snack attacks. And also she's going to be highlighting some fantastic
00:45people. We're going to be talking to her about that because it has been an extraordinary week.
00:50Um, a week, uh, full of, of heartbreak, a week full of passion. So of course, we're going to be
00:57talking about that as well. So thank you wherever you are in the world. Thank you so much for joining
01:03us every week. It's very exciting that you're here and I love doing this. This is a, this really is
01:08a sort of dream come true, being able to do a live Friday night show with Hello Magazine. Um, as
01:14I say
01:14every week, one of the reasons that I absolutely love, uh, being involved with Hello Magazine is that
01:21their hashtag, uh, hello to kindness is, uh, very important to me. And I think it should be to
01:26everybody and especially this week. So I salute you Hello Magazine, uh, for having that just incredible.
01:32Okay. So let's see if, uh, Frankie and Wayne are there. I'm going to press the button, see if they
01:38are
01:38there. Right. Let's have a look. Frankie and Wayne aren't there yet, but we will keep talking
01:44until they are there. So I know that Frankie and Wayne, I've actually already messaged them today
01:48very sweetly. They are standing by, which is wonderful. So Frankie and Wayne, I'm just waiting
01:54to see if their names come up. Not yet. Uh, and as I said, John Barrowman all the way in
02:00America,
02:00and he's been posting some, uh, it's some very powerful things as well. Some videos, very powerful
02:05videos, uh, after this week, they really have been quite incredible. I'm going to tap again,
02:10see if they are there because keep numbers keep coming up at the bottom. There's lovely Frankie.
02:17Hello, Frankie. Come on in. Come on in. There they are. She says we're here and they're just
02:23about to come up. Hello, lovely. Look how are you both? Good. How are you? Yeah, very well. Thank
02:34you. And really lovely to see you. Frankie, I've, I've followed you. I've known you a long
02:38time. Yeah. You're just lovely. You're just lovely. And Wayne, there I was seeing you in
02:45the jungle. Yes. That's a nervous laugh there. Yeah. What's coming next? So we're going to
02:55chat about all sorts of things and everything will be going on, but I think we have to start
02:58with, of course, uh, what's been happening around the world. And it's, it's been, as I said
03:03just now, heartbreaking, very passionate. Um, and, uh, there's a lot of fear going around.
03:10There's a lot of hate going around, but there's also a lot of love. So looking over the week's
03:15news, I mean, how do you feel about what you've been witnessing?
03:19It's horrendous. I just can't believe that, um, the awful part of it. I can't believe that
03:25that is still happening in our world. Um, but I think the nice thing is seeing how it's
03:31forcing everyone to come together and have it and knowing that we all need to do something
03:36about it. Isn't it?
03:38Yeah. I just think a lot of people need educating. Um, you know, someone said to me, all lives
03:43matter. Um, but to some people, black lives don't actually matter, which is absolutely disgusting.
03:49I agree. I feel quite emotional when I talk about it. So I just find it really difficult
03:55that people can think like that. It's, it's just disgusting to be honest. And, you know,
04:00we should all just be, you know, the human race, but we aren't. And so it needs to work
04:06that we're all just one race. And the fact that people think we're not is just disgraceful
04:11really.
04:11It really is.
04:12I think it's, um, it's amazing to see how people are acknowledging it and, um, not ignoring
04:20it and not being too afraid to address it and kind of acknowledging and putting their
04:25hands up and saying, we need to be educated. And parents are saying, we need to educate
04:31our children. And that's exactly what we will do, hopefully. And I think that will be a bigger
04:36thing as time goes on.
04:38Yeah. I think you're absolutely right. And it is about education, education, education.
04:42And also there's been a lot of posts about people saying that, um, that hate is taught.
04:48You know, you don't, you don't come out of the womb and think, oh, I don't like that person
04:52because of their color. You just got to remember to be kind to everybody, no matter what color
04:59their skin, no matter their sexuality, no matter their religion. You know, there's a lot of good
05:03in the world as well. And we have to remember that there really is. And thank you for that.
05:09I can tell Wayne, when you talked about that, you get very emotional. Of course, in football,
05:12there's been a lot to talk about all of that. But let's go, let's go back to the jungle because
05:16your reaction when I said that was quite something.
05:22Yeah, it's just, um, it's really just out of character for me to go and do something
05:26like that, really. Um, I was so nervous.
05:29Really? Did you enjoy it though?
05:31Loved it. Absolutely loved it, to be honest. Um, I had a great group and I really, really
05:36loved it. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would.
05:39Yeah. He literally, he went backwards and forwards about whether or not he should do it
05:43for so long that in the end, I was like, just do it, please just do it. And now he's
05:49so obsessed
05:49that he feels, he feels envious of people when they're going in. And I'm like, I just don't get it.
05:55I just love to go and do it all over again. Yeah.
05:58So, you know, a lot of people, obviously we've got John Barrowman after us. I'll ask him as well.
06:02But a lot of people who do it and Strictly, which we'll talk to you about, Frankie, say that
06:06it changes their life. Is it as dramatic as that for you? Was it as dramatic as that for you?
06:12Um, maybe a little bit. I said, because for me, I was more nervous just about the cameras
06:18and stuff. I don't like putting myself in front of the camera too much. Um, so I've become more
06:23comfortable with that. And I met some great people and I did probably come out of it, um,
06:29more confident. And the fact that, you know, I've got a lot of, um, good reactions from people
06:35and around the street and stuff. So it was nice. It was nice to come out and, um, get
06:41that. Um, yeah, I wanted him to do it because when I first got with Wayne, there was that
06:47typical stigma of the fact that he's a footballer, so he must be an idiot and not a very nice
06:52person. And, um, and I really, I said to you at one point, didn't I? I was like, selfishly,
06:58I want you to do it so that people can see why I married you and see him as a
07:03person rather
07:04than like, just a loup that plays football or something.
07:07I'm trying to push her to do it so I get a free holiday sort of straight. But she's
07:11like, she won't do it.
07:12You won't do it.
07:14You know what?
07:14Never say never, I say.
07:16I would love to do it. And it's always been like the other reality show that I'd said
07:20like it would be cool to do. But for me, now that we have the boys, it's such a long
07:24time away without any contact. So that is number one for me. That's what puts me off.
07:29But also, I don't even like ketchup, Gabby. Like, I am so terrified of food, like trying
07:36things. So imagine me, if I got one of those challenges, I would be a nightmare.
07:41I love that.
07:42She would struggle massively. I couldn't see her getting many stars, to be honest. I think
07:46she would really struggle.
07:48Oh, there's me.
07:49I love that you could do it because it's ketchup.
07:52Ketchup and you think of kangaroos bits, you suddenly go, to me, the two couldn't be more
07:57different. I think you could cope with ketchup compared to the kangaroos bits.
08:01Yeah. You would struggle with any eating challenge.
08:03Yeah, just any eating stuff. I just, yeah, I'm really funny with textures and things like
08:09that, which would probably mean that everyone would blooming vote for me, wouldn't they?
08:12They would. They'd make you do it.
08:14Well, actually, you've done Strictly, which, as you know, I love that show. Wayne, would
08:18you do Strictly?
08:20I do think about it, but I also wouldn't want to do it and bring the trophy home. So
08:27obviously, Frankie never brought the trophy home.
08:29Oh, go on.
08:30I was feeling a bit bad.
08:31I was feeling a bit bad on her. No, to be honest, I'm not a very good dancer. I reckon
08:39if you ask me after a few beers, I'd probably say yes. Never say never.
08:45Oh, well, there might be a full swap. So, Frankie, your time or Strictly?
08:49I remember speaking to you about it then. And you loved it, didn't you?
08:54I did love it. It's a show that I've always watched as a family. You know, when I was
08:59still at home with my parents and my nan and granddad loved it. And my grandparents loved
09:06ballroom dancing. And when I was growing up, my granddad would always try to get us to have
09:11a little dance with him and stuff. So I think for me, it was something I knew I'd always
09:15wanted to do. And I was always obsessed with the costumes. So I just was so happy to do
09:21it. And I did love every second of it. But it is so much harder than you think. You know,
09:27it's three months. I was doing like 10 hours training. I had Parker turned one while I was
09:34on the show. And then I was pregnant by the end of the show. So we had a lot going
09:40on.
09:40But yeah, I loved it. It's everything everyone says. It's a complete bubble. And it's one
09:47that I'm glad I was in.
09:48Oh, and I loved watching you on that. Every time I spoke to you, I just, you're just a
09:54natural. There's something, I don't know, you float. I really get this thing. You do.
10:01I actually told you you're floating. Somebody just said, it's a great idea because we've got
10:04John on. Wayne, you should do dancing on ice. That's the one. I don't know. Never say never.
10:12You're really good at ice skating. I'm not bad. I used to roller skate a lot as a kid.
10:17So I'm not bad at skating. I think the thing with that, though, is the fear factor comes
10:22into that. I think it doesn't, people don't get enough credit for doing that show because
10:27we've strictly, obviously, you've got the fear of being live on TV, something going wrong
10:33and doing lifts and stuff, which I was horrendous at and we never did.
10:37So on a pair of skates over ice, you've got that danger factor as well. I just think,
10:42oh, no.
10:43I bet the first thing that John says when he comes on is, yes, Wayne, come on in, Wayne.
10:49I love that idea.
10:51I would chuck myself in. I'd give 100% on anything I'd do. I'd be a nightmare, I think, to
10:57work
10:57with. I find it hard to pick up dance moves.
11:01She can teach you. She can help you at home.
11:04Oh, I'm trying, Gabby. It's hard work.
11:08Get you two on TikTok.
11:10So, okay, Frankie, the other thing that I really want to talk to you about is your book and
11:14your openness about your mental health. And I salute you and applaud you for what you've
11:20done. And I've read all the interviews. And I just think it's so powerful coming, such
11:28honesty coming from somebody like you, how people will perceive you. There you were as
11:33a pop star and you're going on TV and you're smiling and all the rest of it. And yet what
11:38was going on and the angst that was going on. And now you will help so many people through
11:43what you've done. It's remarkable. It's a very brave thing to do.
11:48Yeah, thank you. It's one of those things I, I don't know, I just felt that so much is
11:58being done for mental health now. And it is a conversation that people are starting to
12:02talk about more. And the stigma is slowly, is slowly going. But I found I still wasn't
12:10being that honest about my mental health. And so I decided to open up a bit more online.
12:16And just the massive response I got from that, I just realised that we still have a way to
12:22go. And I think it's not just about what other people think of people with mental health,
12:28it's what you think about yourself with your suffering with mental health. And that was a
12:33big part of my book is I wanted to help people not to feel alone, to find pieces in my
12:39book
12:39that maybe maybe explained parts of themselves. But then also, I have my psychiatrist and my
12:44solid psychologist involved. And they explain things in a medical way, which I felt had to be
12:50in there, because that was the way that helped me to normalise things, to make myself understand
12:55what's happening medically, instead of Oh, I think I'm just crazy. Actually, okay, this is a medical
13:01thing. And this is an illness. And it just makes it easier to understand, I think.
13:06So reading it, Wayne, were you, did you read the book as she was doing it? And I mean, obviously,
13:11you were there. And it's very, you're very honest about in the interviews about how, you know, Wayne
13:18found it so, he was so proud and found it very difficult. But, but the book, were you 100%
13:25you said
13:25yes, do this? Or did you find it? Was it painful for you?
13:30Um, no, not really. If I have to be honest, I haven't, I've read parts of it, but I haven't
13:35read
13:35all of it, because it felt like you're just reliving lots of bits, because I know how she
13:40feels, because she was always so open. I was, I was just literally so proud, because I think she's
13:45open anyway. And she speaks so well. But I was just so proud that she just sat down and wrote
13:51that
13:51book on herself, by herself. And like, I'm not, I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to put
13:57in
13:57pen to paper. And like, I think I read the first, as you were going, I read the first chapter.
14:02And I
14:02was just like, it's amazing. And every time that her management or someone was reading it, or her
14:08friends would read it, and, you know, they were crying and feeling emotional and so proud of her.
14:14But she was just like, she didn't accept, she didn't realise how much people liked it.
14:21Oh, I think it's amazing. And I, I, you know, the, the relationship that you two have got,
14:27you can just see there's, there's a real sort of trust. And you're lovely together.
14:35We're not all the time.
14:38Oh, thank goodness for that. That would be very worrying.
14:41Everyone likes a moan every now and again.
14:43No, you know what, he was, it's so funny out of all the things that I've done, Gabby,
14:47that was like, the thing I feel like he's like a parent in that whenever he's with someone he
14:52hasn't seen for a while, he's like, Oh, yes, I told them about your book, or I'll ring him and
14:56he'll be like, Oh, I was just telling them about your book. And I can tell he's proud of me
15:01for it.
15:02So it is nice. And when the book went into Sunday Times bestseller, I was excited and I was happy
15:09about it. But I didn't, it didn't really sink in until I told Wayne, and Wayne told me how proud
15:15he was
15:15and how excited he sounded for me. Then I just burst into tears. And then it really sunk in. So
15:21it's a wonderful book. I've read it. I think it's really, it's really honest. It's very raw. It's
15:27very powerful. But it also makes a lot of sense. And there are, how do you feel about people who
15:32just, you know, very flippantly go on feeling so depressed? Do you there are a lot of people who
15:37have been as honest as you've been and say, I wish people you wouldn't use that word. And then there
15:42are other people say, you know what, everybody has the right to feel down.
15:46Yeah, I think it's, it's one of those things, you know, it's, it's, I don't take offense by it. I'm
15:52not that easily offended, but I, I can see why it would annoy people. But I think, yes,
16:00loads of people feel depressed, loads of people feel down, they don't necessarily have to have
16:04depression. We can all go through stages of our lives of feeling down. It's not just,
16:09oh, I have that illness, so you can't feel that way. But also, it's a word to some people,
16:17you know, if you haven't experienced it, you don't know how horrendous it can be. And
16:21you might feel that you're depressed. It's a bit like if I'm tired, and I say, oh, I'm absolutely
16:26shattered. I might not be absolutely shattered. I might be a little bit tired. But it's a word to
16:32describe how I'm feeling, you know, so I don't know. I think as much as
16:38people are trying to understand, I think we also have to
16:43give people a chance to understand and give them time to properly, to properly get it,
16:49you know, because I think even when you suffer yourself, I've had to learn about it. So
16:53if someone's never experienced it, I can't expect them to understand in one conversation.
16:58It's great some of the feedback she gets of like people that you've encouraged people to talk and
17:04get help. It is so good.
17:06That's what I was going to say. So the most important thing really is talking, isn't it?
17:09Is being honest and talking.
17:11Yeah, it sounds like such a cliche. And it can be so annoying to hear when you're really struggling.
17:16But it honestly is that, you know, like I always say as much as people who follow me online,
17:23or who have read the book, and they say thank you, and that it's helped them. For me, I always
17:28say,
17:28well, when I speak out, and the response I get helps me not to feel alone as well. So it
17:34kind
17:34of works in both ways. And I wouldn't necessarily be where I am today without telling Wayne how I was
17:41feeling or going to my doctor or going to hospital and opening up, you know, to people following me and
17:48Saturdays fans and stuff. So it's made a big difference in my life. So it is a prime example
17:53that it does. It does help.
17:55That's so great to hear. How has lockdown been for you and your kids? How's it been as a family?
18:02You know, I feel like we started off and it was like a real novelty, because we didn't know how
18:06long
18:06it was going to be. And I just got back from 10 days in Namibia, I went straight into a
18:12book tour,
18:13so I had not been at home. So it was a bit of that, like, careful what you wish for,
18:16then I was stuck
18:17at home. And it was really nice at first, then we started annoying each other. And now we've found
18:23this really nice groove of like, it's really nice to be at home together. It's really nice to be with
18:31the kids, but a little bit fed up with the kids now. Yeah, it's not fed up with the kids.
18:38I think
18:38it's just the homeschooling. It's like, you know, if they were at school with the teacher, they would
18:43do their work with no issues, because we know what they're like at school. And then when it comes to
18:49us getting them to do something, they just push your buttons. And it's just hard. You know what kids
18:54are like. Yeah. But it's been it has been so nice. You know, you have to try and look at
19:00things on,
19:00you know, a nicer side. And it has been really nice to all be at home together. And I have
19:06really
19:06appreciated that. Their kids are loving it. Yeah, they love it. They're not interested in going back
19:13to school yet. No, and they don't seem to miss places. I just miss people. Yeah, I think we all
19:18do.
19:18I think that's something that face to face contact. And this is all of this is wonderful. But it's the
19:23actual sort of physical thing, isn't it? You're hugging people. So have you been doing lots of
19:29Zoom and phone calls and FaceTimes and all of that with friends and family?
19:34We do like a family quiz every week. Wayne loves a Zoom with his mates because it's an excuse to
19:42have
19:42a drink. To be honest, I think lockdown has been worse for me. I've probably drunk more in lockdown.
19:47I've seen my mates more. So yeah, that's probably been worse for me.
19:51I don't really. I don't. I find Zoom a little bit annoying because I feel like you all talk over
19:56each other. I'm a bit Zoomed out. I'm not going to lie. I've had cooking class. I usually start doing
20:00cooking classes every week on Zoom with my friends because one of them is a chef, Tom Sellers. So
20:06he's done about seven cooking classes now, which has been great.
20:10Which again, he says is to learn to cook, but it's also another excuse to cook.
20:14No, he says you should drink wine while you cook. You've got to enjoy it.
20:19Okay. So while you're drinking your wine, what have you learned to cook for the family
20:23then, Wayne?
20:24What have we cooked? I cooked river beef, which was amazing, wasn't it?
20:28It was amazing.
20:29A chicken lasagna.
20:31Bit weird.
20:33I thought it was going to be weird, chicken lasagna, but I really loved it. It was really
20:37nice. What else? There was a lamb I cooked.
20:39You did those fried chicken things.
20:40I've cooked some really fancy sauces, but I couldn't remember the names of them. I'd have
20:44to find out what they are again, but they are really good. Um, yeah, it's been really
20:49good. And we, the lads have recorded it, you know, did a roast. The lads have recorded
20:54it so we can go back to it any time and cook it all again. It's all there.
20:59So I've got your future here. So we have Lisa and John Turow doing their cooking show.
21:04So we've got, we've now need Frankie and Wayne doing the all cooking, all dancing on ice.
21:12Yes.
21:13With a little bit of drinking.
21:15A little bit of drinking, yes.
21:17Carry on being as wonderful as you are. Thank you both for joining us. You are really lovely
21:22and thank you for being so honest and opening up and, um, to have a lovely weekend and stay
21:26safe.
21:28Bye. Thank you very much. Oh, how lovely. There we are. Well, John Barrowman is up next.
21:35So, uh, John Barrowman, he might be able to just book Wayne onto Dancing on Ice. There
21:42we go. Now I know John is there. I've seen his name. Where are you, John? There he is.
21:47John Barrowman coming in all the way from America now. Uh, our editor, Rosie is watching.
21:53Hello. Good evening. Lovely Rosie. There you are. Good evening to you.
21:57Oh, by the way, I just want to say, cause I don't know Frankie and, uh, uh, Wayne will
22:03still be listening, but I just, uh, literally text, uh, one of our exec producers and, uh,
22:11sent a message to her to say that he's interested and that he, uh, can roller skate. And, uh, Wayne,
22:22I expect you to possibly one of the, be one of the footballers who has gone really, really
22:26far. If you get in there and I'll mentor, I'll mentor you because I, you know, I skated
22:32myself. So. And you've been in the jungle as well. John, do you know what? How lovely
22:37to see you. You and I have known each other a very long time. When we first met, you were
22:41naked. Correct. Correct. And that's how most people meet me. Um, but yes, uh, yeah, I was
22:49naked. I was doing hair in the West End, the 25th anniversary revival of hair. And, uh,
22:56yeah, it was, I was naked, but I think that was all, that was the only performance that,
23:02uh, I, I mean, probably it was in the dressing room, even, you know, Gabby, it was so long
23:06ago. I can't remember, but the character I played wasn't, uh, supposed to be naked and they
23:12wanted me to be naked. And, you know, as I know, the only reason they wanted me to be
23:17naked and some others in there was because of the television, uh, background that we had
23:23started to build and they wanted to sensationalize it. And I said, look, the character doesn't
23:28get naked. So there's no need for me to get naked. However, on the last matinee in the last
23:31show, I stripped right down. And I remember it well. Let's leave it there. Uh, John, that's
23:38the thing. So I knew you as musical theater and then of course, TV. And so you're an actor,
23:48you're a singer, you're a performer, you're a presenter. You, you've been very outscoken
23:53there, which we will get to about the news. We have to talk about America. Um, you are
23:58Mr. Entertainment, aren't you? Well, that's it. It's just that people forget that, uh, when
24:05you get into a business and it's the entertainment business, it doesn't, some people just want
24:10to do one thing. That's perfectly fine. However, I didn't want to just do one thing for me.
24:16The entertainment business encapsulates everything that you just said, presenting, uh, musical
24:21theater, um, you know, uh, dramas, comedies, writing books, recording albums. It's all that
24:28if, if I have something that I'm able to do and people are willing to, you know, get involved
24:34with it, listen to it, watch it. Then why shouldn't we? It's like, I've always said this
24:37and people will get sick of me saying it. It's like asking a plumber to do one thing.
24:43You're only allowed to plumb sinks. You can't do that. He's got to do toilets. He's got to
24:47do faucets. He's got to do water heaters. He's got to do all that stuff. You have to be able
24:51to be diverse. And I think the more diverse we are even like in work, the more diverse we
24:57are in our culture, as we spread that kind of diversity throughout everything, just the better,
25:02the better people we are. Actually, look, you've gone there. So let's go, let's go to that.
25:06Because I think, um, the post that you've put out, some of the videos you put out have been
25:10really powerful. And thank you for doing that. Um, this week has been, uh, as I said with Frankie
25:16and Wayne, it's been heartbreaking the past couple of weeks, heartbreaking, but also passionate and a
25:23feeling of coming together and yet hate. And you know that it's all of those emotions together.
25:29What is it like actually in America? What is the feeling like in the States?
25:34Well, I, I say this from that we are in Palm Springs, which is an hour and a half, two
25:39hours
25:40from Los Angeles. We're in a, an area where there was a March and, uh, it was a very peaceful
25:46March and there's been no looting or rioting, uh, here. However, Los Angeles is close by.
25:51It's, you kind of get angry when you watch it on television. I mean, for obviously George Floyd,
25:57uh, you know, who had the police officers knee on his neck and for eight to nine minutes.
26:04And now, you know, and died in front of us on television.
26:09Horrific.
26:09Horrific.
26:09Yeah.
26:10And there's no way that cannot, I'm just sorry. There's no way that cannot piss you off
26:14as a human being.
26:15Yeah.
26:15Right. Yeah.
26:16And so I wasn't able to go to marches, but the only way I felt that I could contribute
26:23with my platform was to post online. I've also been going to friends of mine, uh, young
26:29friend of mine, Chester Lockhart, who is a, a very big gay activist and a black lives matter
26:34activist. And I would post to them and opposed to my nephew. Thank you for being in the marches.
26:40Thank you for doing that because we can't be there. You're there for us also to help.
26:45And I'm using social media in the best way that I can. Now, it's interesting to see people's
26:52reactions because some people are on board with it and with me and others are angry that I'm doing
26:59what they deem to be political, but I've tried not to make them political.
27:03I've tried to make it so that it's making you aware of what's going on. And some people are
27:12really angry at me for doing that. And I just don't get it, Gabby.
27:18Well, those are the people you don't need following you.
27:21Well, I did say that I, you know, but, but they have a right to their opinion. However,
27:26when it's an opinion that is, uh, about someone that, that doesn't look at someone being murdered,
27:34someone, you know, like, um, Armand, Armand Aubrey, who was walking, running in the street
27:40and two white racist men decided that they were the police, pulled out their guns and shot him.
27:49And then called him as we've now found out the N word as he was lying there dying.
27:54Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. It's, it's completely wrong. And I know that Frankie and Wayne said the same thing.
28:02People are saying every life matters.
28:04No, every life doesn't matter until black lives matter to all of us.
28:08And we have to, we can move on after this. Sorry to get really passionate.
28:11No, no, no. Absolutely.
28:13We, we can, we need to take that on board and we need to, I've started even going back and
28:19reading.
28:19I've put a book list up on my, uh, uh, Instagram and, and, uh, Twitter for people to look at,
28:26if they want to read about things, learn things about things like the 13th amendment.
28:30There's a great documentary on Netflix about the 13th amendment.
28:34It's incredible.
28:35Yeah. And if you want to start learning because you don't know enough,
28:40these are the things that you start to do and it's good to talk about it.
28:43And if somebody gets upset about it, I was talking with someone who I know very well,
28:48and they were trying to say something about the people who were writing that,
28:53you know, and right, stealing and writing and the defamation of property is not right.
28:59However, we have to look at the reasons why they're doing it, why people are choosing to do that.
29:05Why, you know, because they don't have a voice.
29:08They're not being listened to.
29:09And they've reached a point as human beings.
29:12They've reached a point where they they're screaming and that's the way they scream.
29:16Yeah.
29:16And I, I'm saying this now, forgive me if I've said some words that may not sound right,
29:22but I'm still in the learning process myself.
29:25Well, we all are. We all are.
29:27Yeah.
29:27We, we have to keep learning and keep, keep learning.
29:30And, um, my love.
29:31I just remind, I remind people, Gabby, sorry.
29:33I remind people that I've always stood up for gay rights.
29:38I've always put my neck on the line for gay rights.
29:41And when, you know, the HIV crisis hit the gay community, people need to remember young people,
29:47young gay men and women who asked me and they're like, you know, why do you get so angry about
29:52stuff?
29:52And I'm like, because you don't remember that Stonewall, you know, that happened in 1969 on Christopher,
29:59I think it's Christopher Street, Stonewall.
30:01That was a riot because, and, and the gay rights movement came out of that riot because gay men and
30:10women,
30:11trans men and women were tired of the police taking advantage of them and just brutally beating them and hurting
30:19them.
30:20And that was it. We had had enough. So, but it's so recent that that history is so recent is,
30:26is, is horrific that it's that close to history. It's such recent history.
30:31Yeah. Well, taking it back to the black lives matter issue, the Jim Crow laws, Jim Crow laws that,
30:38that is like current in history that might not, you know, but it's so close.
30:45And particularly when the president of the United States says things like, if they cross,
30:50I'm paraphrasing here. If they cross the line, they're going to meet the biggest, meanest dogs.
30:55That's a vision in our heads as human beings of seeing black men and women during some riots in the
31:0460s,
31:04getting attacked by dogs. That's what comes to mind. So he knows what he's saying.
31:09He's inciting violence. And I just have to say that we can move on.
31:14Never before have I ever seen the most appalling thing where the president of the United States
31:20meant to be one of the biggest and the freest countries in the world turns on his own people,
31:25gases them, puts the military against them because they were exercising their first amendment right.
31:31If, if, and I say this to, cause I know a lot of Americans are watching this right now, no
31:37matter,
31:38even if you voted for him, which we will have a discussion about that later.
31:42Cause I want to know why and want to know if you would still vote for him a legit discussion.
31:49You can't sit there and, and not be angry because if he's taking that right away, it will affect you.
31:56It will affect everybody.
31:59Good for you, John.
32:00No, don't, don't apologize.
32:02Don't apologize about being passionate.
32:05No.
32:06And thank you for hello magazine for giving us this platform.
32:08No, please, please.
32:10Um, so John, let's, let's go back to your, the, all the performing things that you do.
32:15So we've, um, we, I know you from your acting and your singing,
32:19I met seeing you in West end shows and you are phenomenal acting and singing.
32:23I've presented shows.
32:25I've been on shows that you presented, but I think for me, it's now people see you differently.
32:33It's very interesting.
32:34And I'm not talking.
32:35They see me as older.
32:36No, no, no.
32:38Because you're a fashion designer.
32:40You're you.
32:41Um, and can the person who keeps saying nasty things, just stop.
32:44Um, uh, that you fashion designer that we've seen you as a judge on dancing on ice.
32:48We've seen you as all of those things.
32:50And it's just like you've grown up.
32:54And I actually mean that in a really nice way.
32:57I mean, Captain Jack, as you know, you and I have talked about it.
32:59I, I hope that there's more Captain Jack.
33:02You didn't tell me if there was a lot.
33:03Ah, I have no idea.
33:09Yes.
33:09More Captain Jack.
33:11Hurrah.
33:11Hurrah.
33:12Hurrah.
33:14I just got a phone call this morning about something and I was very excited about it.
33:19That's all I'll say.
33:20Oh, that's fantastic news.
33:22So when are you coming back to film that?
33:24That you can't.
33:25Well, I, well, no, no, I'm not, nothing to be filmed, but you tried to get me there.
33:29You, I know you, um, I was meant to actually be in the UK now, uh, working and doing something.
33:37And, uh, uh, I, I'd already meant to have been in Australia, New Zealand working.
33:42Um, you know, cause I love doing the conventions all over the world for the sci-fi shows for,
33:48uh, Doctor Who, Torchwood and Arrow and all the different things that I've been on, but
33:52everything's been postponed and canceled.
33:54And when lockdown happened, I was actually on a plane coming over when they said, uh,
33:59flights are now being canceled to the United States.
34:02And the pilot came on and he said, we're just waiting to see if we are getting permission
34:06to go forward or if we're going to have to turn back.
34:08So I was in that kind of limbo area, but, um, there's literally, as you know, nothing happening.
34:16Yeah.
34:17Everything has stopped and, you know, they're trying to figure out how to make everything
34:21work.
34:22And the one thing that, uh, uh, you know, for people and hello magazine has always been a
34:26great supporter of the theater world.
34:29Um, and, uh, with the red carpets and everything that happened, the theater world is about to
34:34be decimated.
34:34Oh, it's heartbreaking.
34:36It's about to, we could lose such iconic theater venues, uh, that could just go under and
34:42never appear again, like the Royal Opera House.
34:45Um, uh, you know, the Albert Hall, uh, even, you know, the Palladium.
34:50I'm just throwing all the general ones in there too, but theaters and actors are suffering big time.
34:57And I don't think the government is taking that on board.
35:00We need to, you know, theater is a big part of education, life and, and entertainment.
35:05Theater and television and film is what everybody has turned to at the moment during lockdown.
35:10And actually I was interviewing a very famous actress, uh, the weekend on my radio show.
35:15And she was saying, everybody thinks that actors are rich.
35:20Most actors, most actors on the whole are jobbing actors as everybody calls them.
35:25So they're going from job to job to job.
35:27And in between they work in restaurants.
35:29Now the restaurants have closed as well.
35:31The bars have closed.
35:32So they are, they don't have anything.
35:35They don't know when the next job is going to be.
35:36And it's not just the people, the actors, it's the people behind the scenes.
35:40Cause you can never do a show on stage or without anybody.
35:44Yeah.
35:45Even, even things down to the people, the men and women who are the ushers and the ticket,
35:50uh, uh, people and the box office people in the theaters.
35:53There's, there's a huge, also the restaurants outside that thrive on, you know,
35:58the pre theater dinners before everybody goes in.
36:01And it's a huge, big chain, but hopefully people will get a kick at, you know,
36:07the government will get a kick in and start to move things on.
36:10So, yeah.
36:10And also I just saw someone say right there.
36:13I am reading some of the comments, local theaters.
36:16Yeah.
36:17Need local theaters make most of their money over pantomime season.
36:21So we need to, I would hope that things will be back up and running for Panto.
36:26That would be a great, wouldn't that be a wonderful Christmas if we were able to celebrate like that.
36:32So are you, do you know what's next for you?
36:35Or is that, it's still just, is it up there and you don't know?
36:38There's things that I was meant to be doing that are now being postponed until next year.
36:43But my argument with a lot of the postponement, they want you to then book.
36:48But what if something comes in between, you're asking me to sit and hold,
36:52then a lot of actors are being asked to do this.
36:54And we're saying, well, you should be giving us a retaining fee to hold,
36:58because we're not earning any money.
37:01You know, and listen, I say that and I know people will be going,
37:04but you look at you, you're in Palm Springs.
37:06That's right.
37:07I'm in Palm Springs.
37:08I'm here.
37:09I'm very lucky where I am.
37:11However, my income is stopped.
37:14Yeah.
37:15We're going into savings.
37:17We, I, I still have people that I have to pay employees that,
37:22uh, of another company that I have, uh, with, um, uh, a business partner.
37:27And we have to, I have to pay her.
37:30I have to pay.
37:30So there's things, it's just all different and different levels.
37:34And I'm not asking for sympathy, but I just, the thing is,
37:37there's a lot of actor friends of mine and people, everybody's unemployed.
37:41We're unemployed.
37:42Yeah.
37:43I've never said that in my life.
37:45But you will be again, especially when you have Wayne Bridges on dancing on ice.
37:50Yes.
37:50There's things that, you know, I'm one of those grafters that I will try to create work for myself.
37:57So I've been having conversations with people thinking of how to do things that we can,
38:02you know, uh, uh, get ourselves doing stuff again.
38:06And, um, you know, it will get back to normal.
38:10It's just going to take a little while.
38:12Yeah, it will.
38:13It will.
38:13It will.
38:13It'll be new.
38:14It'll be different, but we'll get through it.
38:16Um, how was the operation?
38:17Everyone's saying you had your operation, your jaw.
38:20Yeah.
38:20I've, I've, uh, I go in for another checkup, uh, to make sure it's okay.
38:24I had, I could show you, but you probably wouldn't be able to see it.
38:28I had there, see that gap.
38:31Yeah.
38:32I had that tooth.
38:33It had to be extracted because it was deteriorating in my jaw.
38:37And it had caused the, it had caused a huge abscess that I didn't know I had.
38:43And I went in, uh, they literally had to extract it.
38:47And then without getting too graphic, go into my bone of my jaw, clean it all out.
38:53I had a bone graft.
38:54I can't, I can't open my jaw as much as I would like to.
39:00But, um, I go in to get the stitches and stuff taken out in a couple.
39:04It's sore.
39:05I I'm trying to push through the pain.
39:07I'm, I'm, I'm not on painkillers cause I don't want to be put on anything that's kind
39:11of addictive.
39:11So I've just.
39:12Can you still sing?
39:14No, I can't sing at the moment.
39:15Cause if I extend my, my jaw past there, I could stretch the stitches and pop them.
39:20No.
39:21And it's really important that I, I stay.
39:24Scott, Scott loves it because I'm not walking around the house singing.
39:27I'm upset cause I wanted you to give us a little bit of something, a little.
39:32I can give you a little bit of something, but yeah.
39:35Um, Scott, what should I sing?
39:38I'm not singing the Chichelina song.
39:41No.
39:42Um, uh, what can I sing?
39:45How's Scott?
39:47He's fine.
39:47Scott, come say hello.
39:50Hey Scott.
39:51You're lucky cause he walked, he walked through earlier and he was just out of the shower
39:55and I said, you cannot do that.
39:57As much as Gabby will love it.
39:59You cannot do it.
40:02How are you doing Scott?
40:03Are you well?
40:04Yeah, I'm loving it.
40:05It's really great.
40:06We've got great weather.
40:06We've got the pool.
40:07We've got the dogs.
40:08So just, yeah.
40:10He's, he's, he's really enjoying the lockdown.
40:13He finds it really kind of relaxing.
40:16Yeah.
40:16It's nice cause you're more relaxed, aren't you?
40:19So it feels like that.
40:21But he says he's not singing Scott.
40:23We got to get a little something for him singing us.
40:25What should I sing?
40:26I don't know.
40:27Um, um, how about, uh, no, I don't want to give me, give me something to sing Gabby.
40:33Ask from, from name something and I'll sing it.
40:36Go.
40:37Anything goes.
40:40In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, but now God knows.
40:49Anything goes.
40:51That's it.
40:51You can still do it.
40:53Yeah.
40:53No, I know I can still sing, but it's just that I can't belt it as much now because of
40:57the jaw.
40:58Oh.
40:59He's laughing at me.
40:59You're going to do another album.
41:01Surely you'll do another album.
41:02Uh, I don't know.
41:04I mean, the thing is the, the, the people that I do the, that my fan base have buy the
41:09albums, they're used to buying CDs, but CDs don't sell.
41:13So the, the thing that we have to look at is getting those people to get on digitally.
41:17If I do an album, it'll probably be, you know, I've done the Christmas album.
41:22I'd like to do a pure musical theater album.
41:25I've never really, it's been, it's been ages.
41:28And I'd like to do stuff like from, you know, you know, taking something from wicked, something like from Hamilton
41:34and actually maybe take requests from everybody and build it that way.
41:40And so it's songs that people want to hear.
41:43Ooh, songs that people want to hear.
41:46There's your new album.
41:48Perfect.
41:48And I can see the tour now.
41:51And then, oh, it's perfect.
41:52John, thank you.
41:53You're welcome.
41:54Are you still doing your suits?
41:57Yes.
41:58Dobell.
41:58Yeah.
41:59JB by Dobell.
42:00There's, um, we weren't, you know, this all happening.
42:03We were going to be doing a big launch alongside the James Bond film, which has been postponed because we
42:10were launching.
42:10You know, dinner suits and things like that.
42:13Uh, but yeah, JB by, by Dobell will be back once this is all taken care of, but you can
42:18still go to the Dobell website and get the suits.
42:21They're fantastic suits.
42:22They're absolutely amazing.
42:23And they're very, very reasonably priced.
42:26A suit for under 200 pounds.
42:29And I've seen you in them and you look gorgeous.
42:31Uh, John, thank you as always.
42:33Give Scott a big kiss and stay safe.
42:35And I will see you when you're back here.
42:37Ciao.
42:38Thank you, everybody.
42:38Bye.
42:39Bye.
42:39Bye.
42:40Hello.
42:42Bye.
42:43Bye.
42:43Oh, bye guys.
42:46Goodness me.
42:47Wow.
42:48Very, very powerful.
42:50Uh, John is a very, very passionate guy.
42:52I've known him for a very long time.
42:54Um, and he's so, I didn't think we were going to get him to sing, which is wonderful.
42:58Uh, so now we go over to Melissa Hemsley now, and she will be giving us our snack attacks.
43:03Melissa, are you there?
43:04Melissa Hemsley, you wonderful lady, giving us, she is the queen of kitchens, and she will be giving us our
43:12snack attacks for the week.
43:13Goodness me, Melissa.
43:16Melissa.
43:16What a show today.
43:18Hi, Gabby.
43:19Hi, Gabby.
43:19Hi, hello.
43:19Hi, everybody.
43:20You all right?
43:21What a show.
43:22I mean, the passion.
43:23I mean, hearing from Wayne and Frankie, what they said at the top was very passionate.
43:27And then Frankie being so honest about her mental health, which is amazing.
43:32I think we're going to see Wayne on Dancing on Ice.
43:35And then John was so passionate and forthright about what's been happening.
43:40And I also want to congratulate you on your amazing feed on Instagram through this week.
43:46I know you weren't sure about doing this, but you feel strongly that you want to give a platform to
43:51certain people.
43:52And I know you went on the demonstration in Hyde Park.
43:55How was it?
43:57Oh, it was...
43:59I don't even know what words to describe it, because obviously it was incredibly sad and important.
44:04And I felt it was just so important to be there.
44:07And it was my first time out.
44:08And, you know, Henry and I went with masks on and everybody taking responsibility to social distance.
44:15So it was sad and important, but it was also wonderful and it was peaceful.
44:20And everybody was helping each other out.
44:22We took spare masks and we were giving them out.
44:24And people had donated water.
44:27And it was wonderful.
44:28And, you know, we made our sign.
44:30Our sign said Black Lives Matter.
44:32And then, yeah, you and I were texting and I said to you, I don't know if I'm going to
44:37come on.
44:38Because I had said to myself last weekend, I'm going to...
44:42I cancelled all my own events.
44:44And I thought it was so important to use the time to educate myself because I felt incredibly ignorant and
44:52angry at myself for not knowing enough and not doing enough.
44:56Anyway, enough about me.
44:57I then thought, right, moving on, I'm learning and I'm going to keep on learning.
45:03What can I do action wise?
45:05And you and I were texting and we said, OK, brilliant.
45:08Well, we always do snacks inspired by the guests.
45:10Well, today I'm going to use my time with you to show you, to talk to you about three amazing
45:15women.
45:17One who has Nigerian heritage, one with Caribbean and one with Ghanaian and talk about the amazing food because they've
45:25been doing this for ages.
45:26And I've been following them, but I didn't know enough about their food.
45:29And I'm still learning.
45:30And so I just wanted to show you three lovely recipes.
45:32Shall I show you?
45:33I love this.
45:34I love this.
45:35Can you tell everybody who they are so we can also follow?
45:37Absolutely.
45:38So, and then maybe I will also, on your page, write their Instagram handle.
45:42So the first one Zoe Adjianyu, I hope I forgot Zoe Adjianyu.
45:46She's at Ghana's, Ghana Kitchen.
45:49She has a, it was a restaurant.
45:51It's a pop-up.
45:52It's a residency.
45:53But what she's been doing and she's so fantastic has been the whole of lockdown, cooking every single day for
45:59NHS workers, mainly around East London.
46:01So if anyone wants to support her on Crowdfunder, please go for it.
46:05Amazing.
46:05And I was looking up her recipes and this is one of them.
46:08Can you see?
46:09I've eaten half the bowl already.
46:12Zoe, this is Zoe at Ghana's Kitchen, at Ghana's Kitchen on Instagram and her Crowdfunder.
46:16It's a Ghanaian guacamole.
46:20What's the difference between a Ghanaian guacamole and a Mexican?
46:24Good question.
46:25Well, I'm going to go and say the Ghanaian one is even more delicious because I love my guacamole.
46:30Zoe advises keeping it chunky, which I like because there's something to bite into.
46:34As well as red onion and chili and lime and avocado.
46:38We've also got cinnamon, cayenne pepper and smoked paprika, coriander, which is what you might find in a Mexican guacamole.
46:46And she also recommends chives too.
46:49And then she puts peanuts on top, but I only have cashews.
46:52So there's some cashews on top.
46:54Oh, wow.
46:55I love all of those.
46:55See all the colours.
46:56Okay, so Henry has to do the taste test.
46:59It's pretty spicy, Henry.
47:00Henry, come in, come in.
47:02Oh, he's coming around, Henry.
47:03He's looking very handsome today, if I do say so.
47:06Hello, Henry.
47:07Right.
47:08Let's have a look.
47:09Hey, let's have a listen.
47:10See what you think.
47:11Mmm.
47:12It's nice and chunky.
47:14Really good and chunky.
47:14Really good.
47:15Oh, it's delicious.
47:16So that's Ghanaian guacamole.
47:19Ghanaian guacamole.
47:20And it's at Ghana's Kitchen.
47:21And please check out what she's doing on Crowdfunder.
47:25Somebody just said, is she on Facebook?
47:28Do you know if she's on Facebook?
47:29I reckon she must be on Facebook too.
47:31Absolutely.
47:32But she's definitely on Instagram.
47:33And if you're a food company, because I know food people follow us, maybe you could donate
47:37some food that she could cook with.
47:38That would be amazing.
47:39Really?
47:40She's all off her own back.
47:42Then I thought about a drink.
47:43And I know Gabby's always interested in a non-alcoholic drink.
47:47So over here, I have got a little hibiscus.
47:52Have you ever had hibiscus?
47:53Hibiscus flower drink?
47:55No, I haven't.
47:55I know what they are, but I've never drank it.
47:58Okay, here you go, Henry.
47:59Let's pass that to Henry.
47:59So there's a wonderful girl called Lope Ario.
48:03L-O-P-E-A-R-I-Y-O.
48:06And she describes her food as a union of Nigerian and English.
48:09This is hibiscus flowers.
48:11She uses fresh and dried in her book.
48:13Her book is called Hibiscus.
48:15Sorry, Zoe's also got a book called Ghana Kitchen.
48:17Lope's book is called Hibiscus.
48:20And I just saw it sold out on the big website, whose name we shall not name.
48:25But now's the time to support your independent bookshop.
48:28I know mine, Flop's Books in East London, is delivering.
48:30So support them.
48:31And I've been falling in love and marked up.
48:33So hibiscus flowers.
48:34So what I did was...
48:35Shall I show it in case people don't know what it looks like?
48:37No, please.
48:39Here you go.
48:40Just lovely, like, crunchy, dry tea leaves.
48:44And then I put them in a jug.
48:46This colour's now muted, because this is my second round of it.
48:50And I just left it.
48:51And I just did that.
48:52And then now I've got like a cordial almost.
48:54And it's sour and lovely.
48:56I've added lime juice.
48:57What would it remind me of?
48:59Cranberry.
49:00Cranberry, I'd say.
49:02But way better than cranberry.
49:03But just like cranberry, I added a bit of raw honey, Gabby.
49:06And then I actually...
49:08Also, I brewed up some ginger, because that's my mother's Filipino tea.
49:12And I've combined hibiscus and ginger together.
49:15Oh, lovely.
49:16And Gabby, that would keep you all weekend.
49:18So, you know, you could just keep getting it out of the fridge.
49:21Final shout out.
49:23And we'll carry on next Friday shouting out more amazing, amazing black women in space
49:27and men.
49:29This is my friend Rachel Ammer.
49:31She's got roots from the Caribbean.
49:32She's Londoner, but roots from the Caribbean in Sierra Leone.
49:35And it's vegan too.
49:36So we're not vegan, but we love vegetables.
49:39And I've used two of her recipes.
49:42She had a lovely roasted red pepper dip.
49:44And then she had sun-dried tomatoes.
49:48And I blitzed it together.
49:49And then I've topped it with sumac, which is a lemony tart berry.
49:54I bet you've got sumac in your cupboard, Gabby.
49:56I do.
49:56And I've only used it because of you.
49:59So this is, you say it's tomato and red pepper.
50:02Yeah.
50:02So roasted red pepper and sun-dried tomatoes.
50:05But I didn't have sun-dried tomatoes.
50:06So I roasted some tomatoes too and blitzed it all together.
50:09And then a bit of garlic too.
50:13And then I've put some chili oil on top and the sumac.
50:17And the sumac just looks like it's a little red mix like that.
50:21And it's used in Middle Eastern cooking and some African cooking.
50:26And it's...
50:27It's very nice.
50:28It's slightly...
50:29It's an unusual taste.
50:31And I really like it.
50:32It gives a real sort of little pungent kick.
50:35It gives a little kick.
50:37Henry, Henry, would you like to dip a cherry tomato in there?
50:40I would.
50:40We've got lots of veg in.
50:42We've just got our veg box delivered.
50:43So we've got loads of veg in.
50:44Okay, Henry, let's find out.
50:49Mmm.
50:49That's amazing.
50:51You haven't given us a thumbs up this week.
50:53It's because I had the dip on my fingers and I was licking it off.
50:57Okay.
50:57Thumbs up.
50:58And what did you think of the hibiscus tea, please, Henry?
51:01You didn't say.
51:02You just disappeared.
51:03It was very fresh.
51:04It was like cranberry, but better.
51:06It was like fresh, a bit more savory than cranberry.
51:09Yeah.
51:10Really, really nice.
51:11Oh, I'm going to enjoy that.
51:12Oh, it's so delicious.
51:13And also, it's tart.
51:15So you just remember, you can add sparkling water or something to even it out if you like.
51:20And I just love the color too.
51:22So that's Garner Kitchen.
51:23Garner Kitchen, Zoe.
51:25You've got Lope, L-O-P-E-A-R-I-Y-O on Instagram.
51:29Her books, Her Viscous.
51:31Zoe's is Garner Kitchen.
51:32And then Rachel Ammer.
51:33Rachel Ammer's book is called Vegan Eat.
51:35And they're all brilliant women to follow.
51:38That's fantastic.
51:39So will you put it up?
51:40And then I will put it up on my feed as well at Gabby Roslyn.
51:43And then we can share it.
51:45And then I'll follow them as well.
51:46And it'll be all, everybody together.
51:48Fantastic.
51:49Thanks, Gabby.
51:50You are wonderful.
51:51I'll see you next week.
51:52Love you, Gabby.
51:53Bye, Hemsley.
51:54Bye, everybody.
51:55Bye.

52:02What a lovely thing to do for those three people as well.
52:05Thank you so much for watching as you do every week.
52:09I'm not going to tell you who's on next week because one of them is confirmed and one isn't yet.
52:15So very fabulous people.
52:17But thank you so much for watching.
52:19Thank you, Hello Magazine, for getting me and allowing me to do this because I do enjoy it so much.
