00:04Could you hear the pads rumbling all the way up in New York, New Jersey?
00:09It was the first day of full pads.
00:12Practice number five, but it was day six.
00:15The guy had the day off yesterday.
00:17What's going on, everybody?
00:18Steve Serby, Brandon London.
00:20This is your New York Post Sports post-practice report.
00:23Say that 10 times fast, Serby.
00:25No, thanks.
00:26How do we start this off?
00:27The first practice, it was raining out there, it got wet, then the sun came out.
00:31Yeah, I'm drenched still, still drenched.
00:33I had dry fit on.
00:34Look at my credential, look what happened to my credential.
00:36Well, that kind of, I'm glad you show that right now because you see the way that just
00:41split.
00:42That's the way Arvel Reese was splitting the offense today.
00:46You see what I did there.
00:48The rookie has been absolutely phenomenal since OTA's Serby back in the spring, but now he
00:56put the pads on today and he impressed even more.
00:59I'm going to start off with what Coach Harbaugh, Jermaine Illuminor, DJ Reader, and Tyrone
01:04Tracy said about the rookie, and then we're going to give our thoughts.
01:08Very encouraged.
01:09I think he looked good today from what I can see.
01:10I can't wait to see the tape, but he's playing really well.
01:13He's been playing well the whole camp since he got here.
01:16What stands out about him?
01:18You see the talent, obviously.
01:21I think he's very sharp for a first-year guy, gets things right pretty much all the time,
01:26makes very few mistakes.
01:29He's a very serious-minded guy and he's very determined.
01:32I mean, he's doing things well.
01:33Likes to hit.
01:34It's quick.
01:37Yeah, I think he's going to be a pretty good damn player.
01:44I'm glad he's on our team.
01:45I'll say that.
01:45He's quick.
01:47He's physical.
01:50You can tell that he truly loves his game and that his instincts are just ridiculous.
01:55I had one play today where I climbed to second level and we smacked each other and I got
01:58tripped.
01:59Just in case there was a video, I got tripped.
02:01Got tripped.
02:02There was some behind me and I got a tabletop, so I'll get that back tomorrow.
02:06But I like him a lot.
02:08He's a great kid.
02:09In the locker room, on the field, he's a respectable young man and I think he's going
02:16to be a tremendous player for us this year.
02:18Kid has a real chance to be special.
02:21You don't really get a chance to see kids that size move around like how he does at every
02:25different position, really run around and he's smart and he stays quiet and really tries
02:32to learn.
02:32So he's got a real chance to be really, really good.
02:34Both of those guys got a real chance to be special in this league.
02:37Number 52, that boy.
02:40I mean, he's big, strong, physical.
02:43I think he's a great football player.
02:45I think Arrell is see ball, get ball.
02:48I think that's the best way to describe him, man.
02:49See ball, get ball.
02:50He's going to run fast.
02:51He's going to hit hard and he's going to be around the ball at all times.
02:53So I think that's probably the best way to describe Arville.
02:56You're right in the bottom.
02:59Impressed or overrated.
03:01The kid is a natural.
03:03Now we understand why Harbaugh and Denard Wilson wanted this kid and they wanted him
03:10at linebacker.
03:11Yes.
03:11See ball, get ball.
03:12That was Tyrone Tracy's description of Arville Reese.
03:15Well, to see the ball, you've got to have instincts.
03:18To get the ball, you've got to have athleticism, quickness, speed, toughness.
03:23Arville Reese is the complete package.
03:25And, you know, I know the Jets are raving about David Bailey with the second overall pick.
03:31But Arville Reese with the fifth overall pick is a steal.
03:35And I was looking at him, talking to him a couple days before and I was kind of sizing
03:40him up.
03:40And sizing him up in the sense where we're about the same height.
03:43I'm about 6'4", 6'5".
03:45Wait a minute.
03:45I'm 6'4".
03:46I thought you were 7'4".
03:47You're taller than the Wimby.
03:48I was thinking, you know, when I'm sizing him up, it wasn't because I'm trying to see
03:52how tall he is.
03:53I think I was ready to fit him for a gold jacket.
03:56I think this kid so far has shown that.
03:58And I don't want to speak ahead of myself because he still has to do it in preseason games
04:02and, of course, regular season games.
04:04But right now, ladies and gentlemen, he is as advertised.
04:08He is.
04:09I got a TikTok or Instagram video when they announced the draft pick.
04:13Everybody that was at the Giants draft party was screaming.
04:17They were absolutely excited about it.
04:19No one was thinking about Sonny Stiles or Caleb Downs when they drafted Arvel Reese
04:24because he is showing up on tape at least two to three times each practice.
04:29And he was at the top of the Giants board.
04:31They didn't think that he would fall to five.
04:33You know, the Cardinals passed on him for Jeremiah Love.
04:36And then Robert Sala and Brian Dable opted for help for Cam Ward in the form of
04:43Carnell Tate, his teammate of Arvel Reese.
04:46Absolutely.
04:46So Giant fans ought to be just totally, totally excited about this kid.
04:51Well, I mean, you've covered the Giants for a long time.
04:54Is there any former Giants linebacker you can compare him to?
04:58Again, I know it's early, but from what you're seeing so far.
05:02Well, I was there when the Giants drafted Carl Banks with the third or fourth overall pick.
05:10Arvel's a different kind of player.
05:11He's actually about Banks' size, maybe a little bigger.
05:15I think he's more athletic than Banks is.
05:18But, of course, Banks is a borderline Hall of Fame player in my view.
05:22And Arvel's going to have to prove it.
05:24But, look, he's got this whole camp.
05:29His teammates buzzing about him.
05:31Quiet kid.
05:32All business.
05:33All football.
05:34Exactly what John Harbaugh wants.
05:36And he wanted to get bigger within the inside of that linebacking core in the interior of that defense.
05:43He did.
05:43Tremaine Edmonds comes in.
05:44Both of them are your height.
05:45Yeah, it's like David Robinson and Tim Duncan, I call those two dudes.
05:49Good luck to a lot of quarterbacks trying to throw the ball across the middle with the Twin Towers standing
05:53there.
05:54Let's talk about the defense.
05:55Oh, by the way, Arvel had a sack today.
05:58Okay, yep.
05:59And he had a bunch of TFLs.
06:01He was a demon against the run.
06:04All over the place.
06:05John Harbaugh talks about building that wall with D.J. Reeder and company.
06:09Yep, yep.
06:10And the idea to build that wall is so Arvel Reese can run amok behind that wall.
06:16Well, let's go in that defense because D.J. Reeder did a great job being kind of taking,
06:20I know we're going to have that or the Giants are going to have that defensive tackle by committee with
06:26Dexter Lawrence going elsewhere.
06:27But he gave the offensive line, the interior offensive line a fit.
06:31Defense really showed up today.
06:33And you could say you could try and blame the rain.
06:36And that was all, you know, the offense had a couple of pre-snap penalties because of the hard counts
06:41and they're jumping off sides.
06:43But the way you see this Denard-Wilson defense fly around and communicate, most importantly, the way they're communicating,
06:51you're looking at this defense like, okay, they've got a chance to, one, close out some double-digit leads,
06:58two, be a pretty strong defense in this division and in their conference.
07:02Well, let's get those double-digit leads first, right?
07:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:05But the idea for the Giants, obviously, stop the run so the pass rushers can have some fun.
07:12Absolutely.
07:13But it wasn't perfect for the defense today.
07:17Four penalties, they had to do push-ups, ten push-ups for each penalty.
07:23So, D.J. Reeder survived it, but John Harbaugh is going to have a nice teaching tool
07:28when he goes over all the penalties, 14 in all, at today's practice.
07:33Yeah, you know, some of the players kind of shook it off a little bit.
07:36When you're watching these penalties in the meetings, when they have these meetings now
07:41and you're breaking down the film for the day, you're going to be upset with yourself as an offense
07:44and as a defense because you realize these are the things that can get you beat.
07:48But this is only, again, the fifth practice, sixth overall day of training camp.
07:54If you're going to do it, have it on the first day, but you've got to clean it up the
07:58next day
07:58to let your coaches and your team know you're cleaning this thing up.
08:01Well, that's the Harbaugh mantra, next play, next day, next practice.
08:06And Jermaine Aluminor referred to today's rash of penalties as pre or first pad day jitters.
08:18Yeah, first pad day jitters.
08:21But John Harbaugh will be cleaning that up.
08:24You can bet your bottom dollar on that.
08:26Another couple quick thoughts of Malachi Fields continues to make a play a day.
08:32Play a day keeps the Reaper away.
08:34And Calvin Austin has been really reliable for Jackson Dart in this offense as well.
08:41He and Isaiah Likely, I've said it before, they look like they're kind of coming around.
08:45They've got a nice little chemistry thing going.
08:47Any other points, talking points from practice?
08:50A couple of big targets, Malachi Fields and Isaiah Likely, 6'4", 6'5", or 6'6", for Jackson Dart.
08:57On the defensive side, I thought Micah McFadden had a big day today, right?
09:00Yes, he did.
09:01Yes, he did.
09:01And I've been impressed this camp with Deontay Banks.
09:05He dropped an easy interception today in the rain, but he seems fully engaged.
09:12And I think he's going to make the team.
09:16How about that?
09:17I think he's going to get more than make the team.
09:19I think he's going to get a lot of reps in that second.
09:21Well, that CB2 is wide open.
09:22When he's playing with confidence and he's playing with effort, then he hands down deserves a spot on this team.
09:29And I've told people before, you know, talking with Paul, I believe that Denard Wilson is the best thing for
09:34his career.
09:35You've got a former secondary coach as your defensive coordinator, loves to be aggressive, loves to play press man,
09:41and is not going to take no bleep.
09:43Ain't going to take none of it.
09:45Nothing but 110%.
09:46And you're seeing that because that's what they're getting out of him.
09:49And I'll give you another guy who's impressed me, aside from Abdul Carter, obviously, Kayvon Thibodeau.
09:54Absolutely.
09:55He looks to be in the best shape of his life.
09:58He's running all over the place with ease.
10:01He's putting pressure on the quarterback.
10:04He's defending the run.
10:06He's active in coverage.
10:08This could be a big year for Kayvon.
10:10I love it.
10:11You heard it from Steve Serby himself.
10:14Serby, I know you've got to run up out of here.
10:16This was fun.
10:16We'll see you tomorrow for practice number six, day number seven.
10:20If he can get it.
10:22Don't worry.
10:23I'll tell the people.
10:23I know you.
10:24I got a little pool around this place.
10:27I appreciate it.
10:28That's your post-practice report.
10:29We'll see you guys on Tuesday.
10:31That's it.
10:32Let's do it!
10:35Oh!
