00:04the defense had themselves a day today and Malik neighbors has spoken ladies and gentlemen this
00:11is your New York Post post-practice report Brandon London Paul Schwartz here ah the offensive side
00:18of me never wants to give the defense any love unless they're closing out a championship game
00:23or a Super Bowl but we had to give them a little bit of props Kayvon Thibodeau had an interception
00:27today I think Jason Pinnock forced a fumble on a two-minute drill uh but who what were your biggest
00:33takeaways from the defense day two in the training camp well look I'm a Star Wars guy okay I love
00:38the
00:38Star Wars I love that whole genre and this is the defense strikes back okay this is this is the
00:45defense strikes back today and you know how that ebb and flow goes I asked John Harbaugh about that
00:49today um you know the first day Jackson Dark completes 10 straight passes oh ah the offense
00:56looks good oh they're humming they're humming right so today get a little more juice I'm so
01:00the defense watched every snap of that right they're like dude this this dude is too comfortable back
01:06there they're not hitting each other there's no pads but let's get after it this was a defensive
01:11practice for the most part the throws were harder to make and Abdul Carter against Andrew Thomas that is
01:18high level theater Andrew Thomas is one of the best left tackles in the game and let's not forget
01:23last year at this time he was on the physically unable to perform list he was not taken off till
01:29the third week of August he missed all of camp he missed the first two games of the season coming
01:35off
01:35that list Frank surgery and then he played really well this year he's in camp he's not missing a thing
01:42taking every rep for the most part when they want him to rest he rests and what do you see
01:47from Carter
01:48against Andrew Thomas because look we know what Andrew Thomas is we know what we think Abdul Carter
01:53can be what did you see today from I saw two guys getting after it and what's that phrase you
01:58hate
01:58when we talk about training camp what's that phrase that cliche phrase oh iron sharpens iron
02:04that's exactly what we saw and I mean you know coach Harbaugh kind of talked about how
02:08if an offensive player wins a rep or defensive player wins a rep these guys talk about it these guys
02:13talk about it and they may chirp during practice like he said but after they get together and they
02:18study notes or or or have some sort of dialect or conversation about why someone would have won
02:24or why you wouldn't have won Andrew Thomas is not the biggest talker no no in the world in fact
02:29you
02:29got him to talk more than anybody that I've ever seen uh in the history of talking to Andrew Thomas
02:35but when you see a guy who missed out on the Pro Bowl last year in Andrew Thomas because he
02:40missed
02:41some time you see a guy like Abdul Carter who people want to see take that step you want to
02:47see some
02:48sort of balanced competition when it comes to okay Abdul may have won this rep then Andrew Thomas
02:54wins that rep because it's not like Andrew Thomas going up against a second team guy like if he gets
02:59beat by a second team guy that's a problem same thing if Abdul Carter is blocked by a second team
03:05left tackle right tackle that's a problem but John Harbaugh also said something about Abdul Carter talking
03:11about his determination and his work ethic and he's finally smiled he said he hasn't seen him smile
03:16I hadn't seen him smile which which is okay now look any young defensive guy you know from these
03:21these practices you're in a bunch of them you can go out there and get all lathered up and be
03:25talking
03:25and make a play and okay okay you know it's not a big deal now we think Albu Carter could
03:31be a great
03:31player right he's a number three pick in the draft and so he did not just get all lathered up
03:36and run
03:36around he was making plays on Andrew Thomas and it was funny because Andrew Thomas John Harbaugh originally
03:42said man and they were going back and forth and talking and I said John I don't know if that
03:47was
03:47back and forth he said yeah you're right you're right Andrew wasn't really he was listening yeah
03:50and Abdul was doing the talking and as you said I asked and I asked Andrew Thomas about that like
03:57is that frustrating for a defensive player he said yeah they hate it when they're going after me and
04:02they're yelling and they're telling me stuff and I'm like just looking at him just looking at him
04:06he said he also said defensive players they make one play in practice they think they're a pro bowler
04:11right what did he say they make another play they think they're an all pro you know he laughs that's
04:16Andrew Thomas I always say he should go on the field wearing a three-piece suit and a briefcase he
04:22is a
04:22businessman he is a killer but he's a businessman he treats it like a business um that's really good
04:30it's really good for Abdul Carter and look it's really good for the Giants I mean they need
04:34a great Al Duke Carter out there and I think he took a step towards that today and that's an
04:38ultimate compliment when you tell a guy that he's about his business that guy's a business because
04:42not everyone has to be a rah-rah I don't want my left tackle to be a rah-rah guy
04:46if he's giving up
04:47sacks and not saying Andrew Thomas does that but Andrew Thomas like you said he is about his business
04:53now I hate to use this cliche again iron sharpens iron and that's one thing when the defense is going
04:59up
04:59against offense good on good great on great however you want to call it you see that
05:04you see iron sharpens iron but there can be iron sharpens iron within the same position room and
05:10same position group and Abdul Carter who you mentioned had himself a day-to-day Kayvon Thibodeau
05:16continue to put continues to put days together yesterday he had the bat down almost interception
05:22today he picked one off maybe he scored maybe he didn't Jameis Winston I don't know how that goes
05:27but that kind of set off a series of events where you saw energy within the defense and we've seen
05:33it Jameis Wilson new defensive coordinator he's loud he talks more than everybody he coaches after
05:40every single rep but you see that trickling down and translate into the communication within the
05:46defense then at the end of the day we saw Jason Pinnock kind of get his shoulder in there didn't
05:51he really
05:51hit motor single not motor singletary turbo turbo turbo miller Dante Miller didn't really hit him
05:59but poke the ball out in that yeah game over right there in a two-minute drill who picked it
06:04up was
06:05that Micah Micah McFadden picks it up scoop and score so we're seeing through and again it's camp no pads
06:14on no one's calling anybody all pro or or a hall of famer just yet but you're kind of seeing
06:19the
06:20trickle down effect when it comes to one a new defensive coordinator who loves chaos who loves
06:25pressure who wants guys to to have that that jacked up energy and then you see it in Abdul Carter
06:30uh in his in his second year you know prove it type year and the same thing with Kayvon I
06:36also like
06:36you know because because look people in what I do I would say he's the starter he's the backup what
06:42are
06:42you going to do he's the you know you're lining up Brian Burns and Abdul Carter who's your two
06:47outside linebackers how is Kayvon handling that he's the backup and Harbaugh said we have three
06:53starters yeah now now I know you don't you know what I mean I mean I think to start the
06:59game there
06:59will be two starters I think it'll be Carter and Burns but that's the first snap you know what if
07:05the
07:06first play against the Cowboys is a run and it gains two yards right and it's second and eight
07:11Kayvon might come right on the field absolutely and all three were on the field so so I get it
07:16you want to start you want to have 17 starts but Kayvon's gonna play and and I think he he's
07:23on the
07:23fifth year option he needs to you know have a great year to make money with the Giants or somebody
07:27else
07:27and they just need those three guys to stay healthy we mentioned about Carter Burns we don't even have
07:33to talk about I mean Brian Burns is Brian Burns you know he's he's a great player he's a great
07:36guy
07:36just you know you know what I think I would be better for the Giants if he doesn't have 16
07:41and a
07:41half sacks next year this this season okay why give him 12 let Carter have 10 let Kayvon have eight
07:47no I'm not saying let I'm just saying I'm just saying he might not be able to get 16 and
07:52a half sacks
07:52because Carter may beat him to the ball or Kayvon might beat him to it or or Arvel Reese might
07:58beat
07:58him you know one guy is great five guys is better so so you know it's all good right now
08:04with that
08:05group and and you know I don't think Kayvon's sitting there going home thinking oh my gosh I'm
08:08not lining up with the ones I don't think he's thinking that I think he's thinking yeah I am
08:12going to practice my way into being a guy they have to have on the field you think about the
08:17Philadelphia Eagles when they had 30 plus sacks that year you had a couple guys or was it more
08:22than 30 plus it was almost like 60 something sacks in a year yeah you know you had like three
08:26or four
08:26guys in like in double digits that's what you want that's a good problem to have and to before we
08:31flip
08:32and we talked about Malik Nabors he said he had the three starters at outs on the edge he also
08:38said
08:38about inside linebackers I was really interested that was more interesting to me set it up for us
08:44so they know what we're talking about clearly John Harbaugh and this defense wanted to get bigger
08:49right they wanted to get bigger on the inside so they signed Tremaine Edmonds who is but the predator
08:55yeah yeah he's taller than you yeah he's tall and you know when I first met Tremaine Edmonds it was
09:00at
09:00Brian Burns's event remember you were at that event right and I walked over to him and I said
09:05is that Tremaine Edmonds they said yeah I said he looks like a looks like Matthias Kiwanuka I mean
09:09he looks like a big tall defensive end absolutely he's really big he's real then they draft Arvel
09:14Reese he's maybe a quarter of an inch shorter he's a big big dude so I thought to myself okay
09:19that's
09:20what he wanted inside linebacker Michael McFadden is a good player he's proven that he can start
09:24he's not that size so he'll be on the team in some capacity and if you know if heaven forbid
09:30somebody gets hurt he can step in Harbaugh said no there's three starters there you have Tremaine
09:35you have Arvel and you have Micah now that one might be a little more difficult because those
09:40three guys are not going to be on the field at the same time but that's good kudos to Micah
09:45McFadden
09:46who very quickly coming off an injury-filled year has obviously done something in John Harbaugh's mind
09:53to say I look at him as a starter that's really good for Micah and he has a resume before
09:58he got
09:58injured he was one of the better linebackers on the field and he looked like he was going to give
10:03himself a nice but nice size deal he had a resume on a bad team and there's nothing against him
10:11but you know John Harbaugh comes in and you say well Micah started all these games and he's like
10:15how many games did they win I'm not saying he said that but that's easy to do yeah it's easy
10:19to do that
10:20and Harbaugh clearly has not done that yeah so look you need everybody and if Micah McFadden is on
10:26his team which he will be and he gets snaps they're going to feel good about him going on the
10:29field just think before again I know I keep saying before we move on what if there was some sort
10:33of
10:34I've never seen you delay talking about wide receivers because it's it's we're at that point
10:39Paul we've watched these two practices and we've hit that point and I knew I told myself going into
10:44training camp I was going to watch with the glass half full not to be so much it wasn't going
10:49to be
10:49too excited or anything but then you see what it could be what could be think about a package that
10:56has Abdul, Brian Burns, Kayvon, Arvel Reese, Tremaine Edmonds and Micah McFadden on the field at the same
11:03time Denard Wilson be the evil genius that you are but again you got to stop the run you got
11:08to be
11:08able to stop the run to even think about having that sort of package on until then I'm going to
11:13buy
11:13the new Madden and I'm going to make that package on my defense all right everyone talked about
11:19Malik Nabors stepping in getting in all on the field day one yesterday my TikTok and my my my Instagram
11:26reel that I made has has blown up and went viral I think 100 something views off of you know
11:32showing
11:32the video and talking about how how good he look and how unexpectedly good he looked Malik talked to
11:41the media today and I'll let you start with the takeaways because man did did he have some sort
11:47of PR training or something because in from the movie uh coming to America that boy good he was
11:56really good at the podium you know what we walking off the field and I said to you I've never
12:01seen Malik
12:01more relaxed and calm and comfortable you know what it's not PR training you know what it is
12:07it's knee training humble knee the knee feels good and if the knee feels good the heart feels good if
12:15the heart feels good the head feels good he feels like he can play now he doesn't feel like he
12:19can
12:19play game one tomorrow but you know look you were an athlete right you were a professional athlete
12:24if you don't have it if you don't have something you are sometimes you're nothing you're not you're not
12:30a person you know you're not a player right everyone's everyone's out there practicing you're over
12:35there with the trainers everyone's outside you're in in the tub you know you're you're a persona non
12:40grata that's the way it was for him last year it's just the way it is you know you're not
12:44part of the
12:44you're part of the team but you're not part of the team so all through the spring he's not really
12:48doing
12:49much he's out there he's not really doing much and then Malik he made some news he told us today
12:53he's been running and cutting for weeks okay we didn't I didn't know that so I'm saying he's
12:59going to probably start training camp on the physically unable to perform list we asked Malik
13:04about that he said I don't even know what that is I don't even know what that is and you
13:08know what
13:08most players would be kidding I have a feeling he really doesn't know what that is and he doesn't
13:12want to know any part of that so I thought he was calm and relaxed he was smiling and he
13:17even
13:17admitted in the beginning he said I don't usually smile I don't like to show but he said I'm feeling
13:22good look that that's yesterday we said it's the best news Giants fans can have seeing him today
13:28is the best news the second best news seeing him you know he did about the same workload as far
13:33as
13:33I could tell today okay um you know they're not taking great huge leaps with him but look the
13:37regular season's opener is September 13th that's we got a lot of time between now and then and if he
13:42doesn't have a setback he will be on the field as a starter on that day and you know it
13:47didn't
13:48again to see him yesterday it was unexpected and then to us to us to us and then you heard
13:55Jackson Dart talk about him during media availability yesterday same thing with Brian Burns and he talked
14:00about obviously the aura thing but how hard he's working yeah he's working he's working so that to
14:06me put planted a seed in my head to it's like all right this dude they're doing more with him
14:12than
14:13what's getting out they're doing a great job being tight-lipped in terms of where he is
14:17in-house because the only thing that matters is what Ronnie Barnes and that training staff
14:22thinks of him and that knee so the fact that we saw him out there unexpectedly then he talked about
14:28today you know he was very coy and and played it like I'll when I feel good the training staff
14:34they're doing a great job listening to me no time line no guarantees no time no I think that I
14:39think
14:39he's about to try and shock the world I think he's about to try and shock the world and not
14:43in the
14:44sense of oh line up week one or whatever but when he gets out there I'm thinking he thinks because
14:49like he said I'm not coming out there unless I'm better than what I was my rookie year he said
14:54a word
14:55today which I never would have attributed to him and the way he played and I was stunned he had
15:01as a
15:01rookie what 107 catches I think 109 109 come on Paul don't show them to 1204 right seven see that
15:08this
15:08is a guy every catch every catch every catch I am 109 1204 seven touchdowns right so I asked him
15:16Malik are you do you think you can get back to what you were or do you know and he's
15:21like I don't want
15:22to get back to what I was what I was as a rookie remember the word basic what I did
15:27then was basic I'm like
15:30basic no but that's great that he's like not oh man I want to he want he said that's what
15:36he
15:36should have done as a rookie absolutely so look it's all good it's all good it's all good with him
15:40and um look he played less than 25 snaps with Jackson Dart last year so get him on the field
15:46with him
15:47you know I think they're going to be a good combo together and if he's healthy and ready to play
15:52Jackson Dart will not have had any receiver like him at all last year he is different than anybody
15:58with the Giants that he will have um you're getting all for Clem just thinking about yeah
16:02yeah I'm thinking about all the receivers now battling for that wide receiver two position
16:07y'all better get y'all's catches in now because when he steps out there day one on the field
16:11in
16:11the competition period every ball is going to leak real quick uh Darnell Mooney showed up a little
16:17bit today yeah yeah yesterday we're talking about Calvin Austin Mooney showed up a little bit today we
16:22gotta say that even though the offense didn't play great but he had some nice moments and that's that
16:26luxury of having a comfortable Jackson Dart going into his second year knowing the playbook like
16:32we said know and know you know the playbook and having that that that precision that accuracy when
16:37you go into a huddle with a Jackson Dart with that confidence in year two you know be in your
16:42spot and
16:43catch the rock I've got a chance to put something on tape uh all right that was fun my man
16:48uh appreciate
16:49you guys watching our day two post practice report for the New York Post as always we'll be back tomorrow
16:54day three
