00:20the idea of using your face as an entry ticket
00:23gets mixed reviews from fans.

00:36and, yeah, how long are they going to hold on to it?
00:39AFL Club Geelong has offered facial recognition entry
00:42to its members since last year,
00:44rewarding those who sign up with loyalty points.
00:47But even though the club says the technology is entirely opt-in,
00:51experts are still concerned.
00:53If the technology is linked to these other incentives,
00:56then actually there is a little bit of coercion
00:58that's happening there.
00:59Geelong isn't the sole adopter of facial recognition technology,
01:03being first introduced at the Australian Open in 2024.
01:07And the company behind the software says
01:09now up to four other AFL clubs are interested.
01:13We continue to see expansion just in the number of venues
01:16and the types of events that use our technology.
01:19If you're not paying for a particular product,
01:21if you're being convinced to use it,
01:23then often you're the product itself.
01:26Which begs the question,
01:28how is the personal data of ticket holders being protected?
01:32The company behind the technology being used in Australia
01:35says neither it or its ticketing partners own the data.
01:38Instead, it's owned by the venues, or in some cases, the clubs.
01:42It's up to them as to how long they keep that data
01:45and what they do with it.
01:46What a lot of people don't realise is that companies can use
01:50this sensitive information in ways that disadvantage
01:53or even harm us later down the line.
