00:00Let's bring in Henry Hoya Wang out of Beijing, founder and president at the Center for China and Globalization.
00:06He joins us right now for his take on Henry.
00:10We're also just starting to piece together this story, which is developing as we speak.
00:14Your initial reaction.
00:18Well, I think this is I think President Trump is largely pushing for his bill.
00:23He wants this his new bill to be passed and then he's really digging files and and finding the old
00:33stories.
00:34But I think that first of all, I think China didn't meddling the 2020 election.
00:39That is already a fact already passed in, you know, six years ago.
00:46And actually the 2021 U.S. relative government agency already said China was not involved in any meddling.
00:52And that's number one.
00:54Number two, I don't think there's incentive for China to do that because there's no clear candidate that that is
01:02pro-China, that is, you know, wants to have a different angle.
01:06You see all the candidates from U.S. elections.
01:10There's no nobody's really show the big preference for China that China wants to support.
01:15So there's no such a incentive for China to do that.
01:19That's number two.
01:19Number three, I think that China has always practiced a non-interference and a non-intervention on the domestic issues.
01:29China doesn't like other countries to meddle its own issue and China does not meddle in other countries' issues as
01:34well.
01:35So I think I understand, you know, China and the U.S. are now in a very delicate and important
01:43moment.
01:44I'm also Trump, President Trump is expecting President Xi to visit U.S. in September.
01:50So I think, you know, both sides should refrain from accusation and let's talk, let's really put down the differences
01:59and then seek the common ground and for the sake of peace and development for the world.
02:06Henry, the fact that he used a primetime address to directly accuse China of this, I'm just wondering, to what
02:13extent do you think this does in any way change what you said is a shaky sort of relationship now
02:21between the U.S. and China and this truce that we've seen, which has been fragile of late?
02:28Well, I think this certainly doesn't help of bilateral relations, you know, we should really restrain from attacking each other
02:39and accusing each other.
02:41I know China has been really doing relatively well.
02:45I mean, recently we have read some U.S. polls showing that China is more favorable in many countries now
02:51compared with U.S. and China is at this moment.
02:54I mean, it's having a world AI summit, established a world in artificial intelligence cooperation organization.
03:05President Trump's speech just before President Xi's speech was also to get attention as well.
03:10But I do think President Trump, I understand he wants to pass this bill, which is very important for him
03:18and from his Republican experience that he has.
03:24He has long actually blamed that the registration for the for the elections and names and fake names and all
03:35those issues.
03:36So he wants to use this national television address to really to push for his bill through the houses and
03:45Congress.
03:47So I understand that. But but but but not really should the scapegoat in China, you know, for those unsubstantiated
03:55results.
03:58You know, we hope to see if there is any hard evidence or anything like that.
04:02But I do think given that U.S. and China is so important, we just had the President Trump visit
04:09China two months ago and we are expecting President Xi to visit Washington in September and welcome Trump again in
04:19November in Shenzhen for the APEC summit.
04:21And also attending the G20 summit in Miami in December, we should really build up the goodwill momentum rather than
04:30we are starting to accuse each other.
04:32And particularly at this time, I think it's not wise to do that.
04:36Yeah.
04:38Henry, to your point, I mean, there could be a domestic agenda and the the address was addressed to a
04:45domestic audience.
04:47Do you think China will, in fact, might even not respond to this?
04:51And what what what expectations should we have in terms of waiting for a a Chinese response here, Henry?
04:59Well, I think that I'm not a representative government.
05:03I'm not a government officials.
05:04But but what I can see is that I think there's some accusation we already heard in the past.
05:09And China for me, this spokesperson has already repudiated and has responded already.
05:15So so so that has been already there is also a response in the past.
05:21I'm sure there could could be another response from authorities in China again.
05:26But but basically what I want to say from observer of a close observer of China U.S. relations and
05:33also, again, for the really person who cares the China U.S. relations.
05:39I think that we had this very good momentum that since President Trump's visit, you know, recently and and we
05:49are expecting a high level visit full time this year.
05:53So I understand also Trump is busy with his war in Iran and many other things.
06:00There's there's there's upstance and there's a lot of things happening.
06:05So I think, you know, U.S. and China should work together for those bigger issues, global issues like Iran
06:11war, Ukraine war and many other issues.
06:13So I think we should really seek the big interest rather than finger pointing at each other.
