00:00Britain's media regulator Ofcom has opened a formal investigation into TikTok
00:05over concerns it may not be doing enough to protect children online.
00:09The investigation will examine whether the platform's age checks are effective enough
00:15to prevent younger users from being exposed to harmful content.
00:21According to Ofcom, TikTok's age checking systems may not have accurately identified some children,
00:27potentially allowing them to see harmful content.
00:30It stressed that opening the investigation does not mean it has found the platform to be in breach of the
00:36law.
00:37Under the Online Safety Act, companies found to have breached their legal duties
00:42can face fines of up to 10% of their global revenue or £18 million, whichever is higher.
00:49In the most serious cases, a court could also order access to the service to be restricted in the UK.
