00:02Mintupra is one of thousands of grape growers
00:05cutting back their contribution to the wine market.
00:08But we are not picking.
00:10Last year I have not picked 30 acres in my old 100 acres.
00:14The strategic decision, reflective of an oversupplied global market.
00:19If winery is saying no or they are paying very less price,
00:22then we no need to pick because we can't cover our expenses.
00:26The challenge is shared right across the country,
00:28captured in the latest national vintage report,
00:31which shows the smallest vintage since 2000,
00:35estimated at nearly 1.3 million tonnes,
00:38with all states and major wine regions in the red
00:41compared to this time last year.
00:44Overall it is a necessary adjustment that is driven by the market conditions
00:49which mainly means, you know, there's a massive global decline
00:53in wine consumption and alcohol consumption more generally.
00:56Reds were the biggest losers.
00:58Shiraz down 35%, Cab Sav dropping 27%,
01:03while Merlot was 30% lower compared to a year ago.
01:07White varieties weren't as heavily hit,
01:10Chardonnay keeping pace but were still down across the board.
01:13It should see a way to the start of a recovery
01:16where we can, you know, tighten up supply to meet available demand
01:21and clean out any excess supply that's still in tanks.
01:25It's not just output that's down,
01:27grape prices also dropped by 6% last year,
01:30adding more financial stress to growers.
01:33Still we have hope and it will come back.
01:36Hope amongst the dwindling demand.
