00:00When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as a sun,
00:15we've no less days to see what's great than when we first begun.
00:32Good evening all. Always lovely to be back here, isn't it? Really wonderful.
00:40And I have what I feel the Lord has laid on my heart today,
00:47something that I've been thinking about a lot recently, the grace of God.
00:51Looking from Titus chapter 2, verses 11 to 15, that's through to the end of chapter 2,
01:00and then carrying on through from chapter 3, Titus chapter 3, verses 1 to 8.
01:07So chapter 2, verses 11 to 15, and then 3, 1 to 8.
01:14For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
01:21teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,
01:25we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
01:31looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ,
01:38who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for himself
01:47his own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort and rebuke with all authority.
01:57Let no one despise you. Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities,
02:04to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle,
02:12showing all humility to all men. For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived,
02:23serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.
02:30But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
02:37not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy,
02:42he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
02:48whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour,
02:53that having been justified by his grace, we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
03:02This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly,
03:08that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.
03:14These things are good and profitable to men or mankind everywhere.
03:20That's an incredible passage that we read, isn't it?
03:24It's so much packed into so few verses like that.
03:30And there's so much for us to unpack.
03:34You know, we sang, the first hymn we sang was John Newton's famous hymn, Amazing Grace.
03:44Now, there was a man who really knew the grace of God.
03:51He had been through the worst of the worst as a man,
03:56and he described himself as the most vile of all men.
04:03And then God took hold of him.
04:07And some of John Newton's last words reported from his deathbed, apparently,
04:14are,
04:15My memory is nearly gone,
04:18but I remember two things,
04:21that I am a great sinner,
04:24and that Christ is a great Saviour.
04:27Hallelujah.
04:28Isn't that lovely?
04:31And there was a man who had truly experienced the full depths of the grace of God in his life.
04:40What is this grace?
04:42You know, this word grace is used 156 times in the New Testament.
04:48And it was interesting to hear Andy earlier on,
04:52and he was saying,
04:53You know, when I became a new Christian,
04:56he said,
04:57I got really frustrated at people,
05:02speakers over and over and over,
05:04talking about grace.
05:06And I just,
05:08you know,
05:08I don't know how he felt about it,
05:10but it wasn't good.
05:11And he said,
05:12it was because he didn't fully understand it.
05:16But once he learned,
05:17once he learned what he was about,
05:19once he understood God's grace,
05:22and had experienced it in the depths of his own heart,
05:25as with each and every one of us,
05:27I know for myself,
05:28I can identify with that fully with what he said.
05:32Once we understand it,
05:33once we receive that grace,
05:36once we become the benefactors of that grace,
05:39and see what it is,
05:41and how it's working in us,
05:43and what it does in us,
05:45that changes it.
05:47And there's hardly,
05:48well,
05:49there isn't a day that goes by
05:50when we don't actually thank the Lord
05:54for his grace working in our lives,
05:58for the grace that we see him pouring out on us.
06:02Now,
06:03this wouldn't be me as a Greek
06:04if I didn't go into a little bit of the Greek anyway.
06:08Okay.
06:09So,
06:09to understand grace,
06:11to begin to understand grace properly,
06:14the word grace is translated from the Greek word
06:17charis,
06:19charis.
06:20And,
06:22charis gives us a real insight,
06:24so much more than the word grace in English.
06:27Because,
06:28in English,
06:29the word grace is considered a bit of an old,
06:32ancient word,
06:33isn't it?
06:33You know,
06:34we don't really say that somebody is a gracious person,
06:37and use words like that too much anymore.
06:41But,
06:42in Greece,
06:43right up to now,
06:45that word charis,
06:47is still used,
06:49in exactly the same way,
06:51that it was in New Testament times.
06:54And,
06:54it gives us an insight,
06:56because it literally means,
06:58a gracious gift,
07:00or a gracious favor,
07:02which is unmerited,
07:04and given,
07:05with no expectation,
07:07of payment,
07:09or anything in return.
07:11That's it.
07:13That's what it's about.
07:15And,
07:15that meaning,
07:16that word,
07:17the meaning of that word charis,
07:19is emphasized,
07:20by charizo,
07:22which is the verb,
07:23of giving grace,
07:25an act of charis.
07:27I gift it to you.
07:29I'm charizoing to you.
07:31Okay.
07:32And,
07:33by word,
07:33by way of example,
07:34when Kathleen and I,
07:36about 12 years ago,
07:37were leaving Greece,
07:39and closing up the house,
07:41in Greece,
07:43we had furniture left,
07:46we had a car,
07:48we had a little motorbike,
07:50we had all sorts of bits and pieces,
07:53some of which are still in our store,
07:54in Greece.
07:56And,
07:56yeah,
07:57but a lot of it,
07:58we gave away.
08:00The car,
08:00I gave away to a cousin in Athens,
08:03whose car had broken down,
08:05they couldn't afford another one,
08:07and they really needed a car,
08:08so I gave it to them.
08:10The motorbike,
08:11I gave to the pastor's daughter-in-law,
08:13at our local church,
08:15because she needed it for her work.
08:18And so we gave things away.
08:20But when we gave these to them,
08:23we assured them,
08:25and we had to assure them,
08:27we harizo these to you.
08:30And that's the way it is said in the discussion.
08:35We want to harizo to you,
08:37we want to grace to you,
08:39these gifts,
08:42these things,
08:43these items.
08:44Because as we tell them,
08:47we harizo them to them,
08:50there's no expectation of any payment,
08:53automatically.
08:54No expectation of any payment in return.
08:57There's no expectation of any hold
09:01that we might continue to have over the things.
09:06They could take them,
09:08do whatever they want with them,
09:10give them away the day later,
09:11or even sell them if they wanted to,
09:14the day later,
09:15and keep all the money.
09:16Because it had been harizoed to them.
09:20It had been gifted,
09:21graced to them.
09:23That is what we had done for them.
09:27And I remember,
09:28we went back on a trip a few years,
09:31about five,
09:32six years ago,
09:35back to the town.
09:36And we worked through our store a little bit.
09:39And I found a lot of my old sailing gear,
09:45wetsuits and life jackets
09:47and various other bits and pieces.
09:50So I took them down to the sailing club,
09:52I went down with Kathleen,
09:54took them down to the sailing club,
09:55and went into the office of the sailing club,
09:58where the sailing secretary was.
10:01And I said to him,
10:03I want to give these as a gift to you.
10:06I didn't use the word Harris.
10:07I said,
10:09I want you,
10:11the club,
10:12to have these,
10:14because you can make more use of them.
10:17And he was a bit cool toward me.
10:23And we chatted for a bit,
10:25and I was trying to say,
10:26well, look,
10:27here you go.
10:28Shall I just leave them with you?
10:31And he turned to me,
10:32and he said,
10:32well,
10:33how much do you want then?
10:35Because I hadn't said,
10:37and then I realized,
10:39and I said,
10:39no,
10:40no,
10:40no.
10:43I Harris them to you,
10:46you see.
10:47And the moment he heard that,
10:49his whole demeanor changed,
10:51yeah,
10:52because he knew there was no expectation
10:54from me,
10:55from my side.
10:56I didn't want money,
10:58I didn't want anything else.
10:59And he understood what that word meant.
11:02And that's so important.
11:03But isn't it so difficult
11:05to convince people often
11:08that when you do that,
11:11when you give them a gift,
11:12when you give them something,
11:14even if it is as a gift of grace,
11:17as it were,
11:18that there's no expectations,
11:19particularly in the Western culture.
11:22Yeah.
11:23People often ask,
11:24well,
11:24isn't there somebody else
11:26that might need it more than me?
11:29What if you need it later?
11:31But,
11:31but,
11:31but,
11:32well,
11:32why me?
11:34Yeah.
11:34And you get all of this
11:35coming back at you.
11:37People find it so difficult
11:39to accept grace.
11:45And unfortunately,
11:47also for the unbeliever,
11:49we,
11:50we see that
11:51when we're sharing the,
11:53we're sharing,
11:55uh,
11:55the,
11:56the,
11:56the gospel of Christ
11:58and we're trying to share
12:00about his grace
12:01and how,
12:03uh,
12:04and how salvation
12:06is a free gift
12:08and we try to put it
12:09into words
12:10that they can understand.
12:11It's very,
12:13very hard
12:14for people
12:15to understand
12:16this concept
12:17of the grace
12:19of God
12:20that has come,
12:21that can come
12:22into the unbeliever's life.
12:25Because it's so much easier
12:28for people to accept
12:29and to understand
12:31that they've got to work
12:33or do something
12:34for salvation
12:36or anything else.
12:38that they can understand
12:39straight away
12:40and they can refuse it
12:42then straight away.
12:43But being offered
12:44something like that
12:46under the grace of God
12:47is much,
12:49much harder
12:49for people
12:50to accept.
12:51They see it as
12:53something
12:53for nothing.
12:54That's why I suppose
12:56the,
12:56the concept
12:58of salvation
12:59by works
13:00is really something
13:03that's much easier
13:04for so many religions
13:06to accept.
13:07Christians
13:08and non-Christians
13:09alike
13:09prefer
13:11the concept
13:12of salvation
13:14by works
13:15because that's
13:16so much easier
13:17and so much in line
13:19with our culture
13:20and so on.
13:21And it is a shame
13:22when that's true
13:23amongst Christians
13:25as well
13:26because there are still
13:28churches
13:29and Christians
13:30as we know,
13:31those who call themselves
13:32Christians
13:32who truly believe
13:34that they have
13:35to do things
13:36to win salvation
13:39as it were.
13:40You know,
13:41this is,
13:42tell me
13:42that I've got to
13:43do something.
13:44It doesn't matter
13:44if it costs me.
13:46It doesn't matter
13:46if it's going
13:47to be painful.
13:48It doesn't matter
13:49if it's,
13:50you know,
13:51if it's dangerous
13:53even
13:54or costly
13:55or whatever.
13:56I'll do it
13:57if there is a chance
14:00of salvation.
14:01I'll happily
14:01join up
14:02with Jason
14:03and his Argonauts
14:04and go off
14:05and do whatever
14:06it is to retrieve
14:07that golden fleece
14:09of salvation.
14:11I'll navigate
14:13the impossible
14:13clashing rocks
14:15and complete
14:16three nearly
14:17impossible tasks,
14:18supposedly impossible tasks.
14:20He had to
14:21yoke fire-breathing
14:22bulls
14:23to plow a field.
14:24He had to
14:26sow dragon's teeth
14:27to defeat
14:28the warriors
14:29that sprouted
14:30for them
14:30and overcome
14:31a sleeping,
14:32fire-breathing
14:33dragon
14:34guarded in the fleece.
14:35People were happy
14:36to do anything
14:37almost
14:38if they
14:39will
14:40have a chance
14:42of winning
14:44salvation.
14:46But don't
14:47just ask them
14:48to have
14:49faith
14:50and believe.
14:51If you tell them
14:52no,
14:53there's nothing
14:54to do.
14:55It's just
14:55faith.
14:56You just
14:57believe
14:58and turn
15:00your heart
15:00towards the
15:01Lord.
15:02Repent
15:02and that's
15:03all you have
15:04to do.
15:04But there's
15:05nothing for me
15:05to do?
15:06No,
15:06there's nothing
15:07for you
15:07to do.
15:09But this
15:10whole concept
15:11of just
15:11faith,
15:12just faith
15:13as such,
15:14is yet
15:15so difficult,
15:16especially
15:17when people
15:19know that
15:20as it says
15:20in Ephesians
15:212,
15:218,
15:21and 9,
15:22doesn't it?
15:22That even
15:23that isn't
15:25of ourselves,
15:25even that
15:26is a gift
15:27of God,
15:27a gift
15:28of grace
15:28in our
15:29lives,
15:30so that we
15:31can't boast,
15:32he says.
15:33And you know,
15:34most of the
15:35approximate
15:3563 million
15:37people,
15:38according to
15:38the United
15:39Nations figures,
15:40who die
15:41worldwide
15:42every year,
15:44that's around
15:447,200
15:46per hour,
15:47can you
15:48imagine that?
15:497,200
15:50per hour,
15:51die a
15:52death without
15:53God,
15:54a godless
15:55death,
15:55because they
15:57can't believe
15:58or accept
15:59that salvation
16:00is a free
16:00gift,
16:01they can't
16:02grasp this
16:03whole concept
16:04of grace,
16:06and so they
16:07never accept
16:08it,
16:08and so consign
16:09themselves to
16:10this burning
16:11eternity with
16:12separation from
16:14God,
16:15because they
16:16can't accept
16:17the gift
16:18of God.
16:20But of
16:20course the
16:21truth we all
16:22know is that
16:23it's not free,
16:24is it?
16:25Salvation isn't
16:26really free,
16:27somebody had to
16:28pay for it,
16:29just like we
16:29had to pay for
16:30the cars,
16:31originally we
16:32had to pay for
16:33the bikes,
16:33we had to pay
16:34for everything,
16:35we gave away,
16:36just because we
16:36gave it away,
16:37doesn't mean that
16:38we got it free
16:39as well,
16:40and of course
16:41we know that
16:42somebody else
16:43had to pay
16:44for salvation,
16:47for our
16:48salvation,
16:49it needed to
16:51be done,
16:51and the Lord
16:52Jesus Christ
16:53paid for it
16:54with his life,
16:55so it's far
16:56from free,
16:58the Lord Jesus
16:59paid for it,
17:00and he was
17:02the price,
17:03he was that
17:05price,
17:05and he paid
17:06it all,
17:08hallelujah,
17:08and yet
17:09despite all
17:10of this,
17:11we read
17:12throughout the
17:14epistles
17:15of Paul
17:16of how
17:17all of this
17:19confusion
17:20over grace
17:21continued
17:22to build
17:23and build
17:24in the early
17:25church,
17:25and it has
17:26continued
17:27right up to
17:28now in
17:29the church
17:30here,
17:30you saw
17:31the emerging
17:32problem in
17:33the New
17:33Testament times
17:34that Paul
17:35had to address
17:36over and
17:36over about
17:38grace,
17:39when those
17:41few who
17:42did accept
17:42and believe
17:43and have
17:45accepted it
17:45as a free
17:46gift of God,
17:48they can
17:48still,
17:49despite that,
17:50they can
17:50still struggle
17:51with it.
17:54Now,
17:54I'm sure
17:55that many
17:56of you
17:56are,
17:57well,
17:57we're all
17:58old enough
17:58here to
17:59remember
17:59Monopoly,
18:00right?
18:01Do you
18:01remember
18:02Monopoly?
18:02You must
18:03have played
18:03Monopoly,
18:05you know,
18:05and now
18:05one of the
18:06cards,
18:07it was in
18:07community
18:08chest,
18:08wasn't it,
18:09that you
18:09could get
18:10was this
18:10get out
18:11of jail
18:11free card.
18:13And if
18:14you landed
18:15on the
18:15go to
18:16jail,
18:16move
18:16directly
18:17to jail,
18:18do not
18:18pass go,
18:19do not
18:20collect
18:21200 pounds,
18:22wasn't it,
18:23yeah?
18:23You could
18:24use this
18:25card to
18:26redeem
18:27yourself
18:28from
18:29that,
18:30from
18:31going to
18:31jail.
18:32You could
18:33use it
18:33to redeem
18:34yourself.
18:36And so
18:37you didn't
18:37have to
18:38go to
18:39jail,
18:39you could
18:40avoid it.
18:41Now,
18:41what Paul
18:41is saying
18:42that through
18:43faith in
18:44the redeeming
18:45work of
18:45Christ Jesus
18:46on Calvary's
18:47cross,
18:48as we
18:48just read
18:49here,
18:50our faith
18:51in believing
18:51about the
18:53atoning
18:54shed blood
18:56of the
18:56Lord Jesus
18:56Christ,
18:57our belief
18:58in his
18:58death and
18:59his resurrection
19:00from the
19:00dead,
19:01we receive,
19:02as it
19:02were,
19:03a get
19:04out of
19:05hell free
19:05card,
19:06basically,
19:07right,
19:08in the
19:08most
19:08simplistic
19:09terms,
19:10okay,
19:11and that
19:12redeems
19:12us at
19:13the right
19:14time.
19:15And so
19:16we get,
19:17as it
19:17were,
19:18that move
19:19to heaven,
19:20we've got
19:21this move
19:21to heaven,
19:22move directly
19:23to heaven,
19:24do not
19:24pass,
19:25go,
19:25do not
19:25collect,
19:26do not
19:26collect anything
19:27on the
19:28way,
19:28you're just
19:29going,
19:29that's it,
19:30we're on our
19:30way to
19:31heaven,
19:31we shall
19:32not be
19:32moved,
19:32as the
19:33song goes.
19:34But it's
19:35all by
19:35grace,
19:36all by
19:36that
19:37Harris
19:37of God.
19:38Now,
19:39we might
19:39say,
19:40whoopee,
19:41yeah,
19:41I've got
19:42this get
19:43out of
19:43hell free
19:43card,
19:44and be
19:45excited
19:45about it,
19:46but the
19:47apostle Paul
19:47says we
19:48should not
19:49use that
19:49a bit
19:50like James
19:52Bond,
19:53thinking,
19:54you know,
19:54that just
19:55as 007
19:56had this
19:57license to
19:58kill,
19:59and to
20:00do whatever
20:00he wanted,
20:01he could
20:02go and
20:02cause mayhem,
20:03couldn't he,
20:04and he
20:05knew that
20:06because he
20:06had the
20:07license from
20:08his government,
20:08that he
20:09would not
20:10be prosecuted
20:11for whatever
20:12he did to
20:13whoever out
20:14there in
20:14any country,
20:16and so he
20:18had this
20:18license,
20:19007,
20:20and people
20:22seem to
20:23think sometimes,
20:24and this is
20:24what was
20:25emerging in the
20:26church from
20:26the early
20:27times,
20:28that because
20:28we've got
20:29this license,
20:30because we've
20:31got this
20:31card of
20:32redemption,
20:33as it were,
20:34that we
20:36can do
20:37whatever we
20:38want,
20:38and Paul,
20:39of course,
20:39his response
20:40to all of
20:41that is
20:41certainly
20:42not,
20:43by no
20:43means.
20:45God's
20:45grace,
20:46he says,
20:46is not
20:47a license
20:48to sin,
20:49it's not
20:50a license
20:50to do
20:51whatever we
20:52want,
20:52so clearly
20:54even their
20:55back in
20:55Paul's
20:56days,
20:56there were
20:57those who
20:57wanted to
20:58twist grace
20:59to suit
21:00themselves,
21:01and to
21:02make it
21:03something
21:04dangerous,
21:04in fact,
21:05though it
21:06emerged
21:06mostly
21:07originally
21:08from the
21:08Gnostics,
21:10right,
21:10and the
21:11Gnostics
21:11had this
21:12thought
21:13pattern,
21:14that went
21:15along the
21:15lines of,
21:16right Paul,
21:17you keep
21:17talking about
21:18grace,
21:18and you
21:20keep going
21:20on about
21:21it,
21:21now you
21:22say that
21:23the more
21:24we've
21:24sinned,
21:25the more
21:25grace there
21:26is,
21:27which is
21:27what Paul
21:28says,
21:28of course,
21:29and that
21:30seems like
21:30a perfect
21:31arrangement
21:31to us,
21:32I keep
21:33on sinning,
21:34and you
21:35know what,
21:36I can't
21:36help it
21:37sometimes,
21:39so,
21:39and I
21:41quite enjoy
21:41it sometimes,
21:42actually,
21:44so as
21:44God loves
21:45to forgive,
21:47why don't
21:47I just
21:48sin even
21:49more,
21:49so that I
21:50can experience
21:51more of
21:52God's grace
21:52in my
21:53life,
21:54can you
21:55see where
21:55they were
21:55going with
21:56this,
21:56and based
21:57on what
21:58there was
21:59there,
22:00and on,
22:02you could
22:02see how
22:03some would
22:04want to
22:05twist this
22:06grace of
22:07God to
22:08suit them,
22:09and the
22:09apostle Paul
22:10addresses this
22:11grand problem
22:12in that young
22:13church,
22:13and we see
22:14that in
22:15verses such
22:15as Romans
22:166,
22:171,
22:17he says,
22:18what shall
22:19we say
22:19then,
22:20shall we
22:20continue in
22:21sin so
22:22that grace
22:22may abound,
22:24and again
22:25in Romans
22:266,
22:2715,
22:27what then,
22:28shall we
22:29sin because
22:30we're not
22:30under the
22:31law,
22:31but under
22:32grace,
22:33and of
22:34course to
22:34each of
22:35those,
22:35Paul emphatically
22:37answers,
22:37certainly not
22:38by no
22:39means,
22:41and Paul
22:42clarifies
22:42that grace
22:44is not
22:45a license
22:46for immorality,
22:47but it's
22:49supposed to
22:49be in
22:50each and
22:50every one
22:50of us
22:51that have
22:52received that
22:53a transformative
22:54power instead,
22:57a transformative
22:58power that
22:59calls us as
23:01believers to
23:02live holy
23:04lives and
23:04to resist
23:05sin.
23:07Titus 3,
23:081 to 2,
23:08which we read
23:09at the beginning,
23:10tells us in
23:10fact of seven
23:11ways God's
23:12grace should
23:13be expressed
23:14through us,
23:14and we'll
23:14look at that
23:15in just a
23:16moment,
23:18but God's
23:20grace expressed
23:21in us should
23:22transform us,
23:24it should be
23:24a power that
23:25transform us,
23:26and becomes a
23:27testimony to
23:29others around
23:30us.
23:31Now the
23:32Apostle Paul
23:32carefully explains
23:33in Romans 5
23:35verses 20
23:36to 21,
23:37let's just
23:37read those
23:38verses,
23:39moreover
23:39the law
23:40entered
23:41that the
23:42offense
23:43might abound,
23:45but we're
23:46sin abounded,
23:47grace abounded
23:48much more,
23:49so that as
23:50sin reigned
23:51in death,
23:52even so,
23:53grace might
23:54reign through
23:55righteousness
23:56to eternal
23:57life through
23:58Jesus Christ
24:00our Lord.
24:02So,
24:02what he's
24:04really saying
24:05there is
24:07that the
24:09law had
24:10come in so
24:12that we could
24:12see that we
24:13were sinners,
24:14we could
24:15understand that
24:15we were
24:16sinners,
24:17we weren't
24:18given the
24:19law in any
24:20expectation that
24:21we'd ever be
24:21able to keep
24:23the law,
24:23because of
24:24course,
24:24if we could
24:25keep the
24:25law,
24:26we don't
24:26need a
24:27savior,
24:30and the
24:31law was
24:32there to
24:33teach us
24:33and to show
24:34us that we
24:35were sinners
24:36and that we
24:37need a
24:38savior,
24:39we need
24:39salvation,
24:40but where
24:41grace,
24:42where sin
24:43abounds,
24:44grace abounds
24:45much more,
24:47so that just
24:48as sin has
24:49reigned in
24:50death,
24:50so grace
24:51might reign
24:52even more,
24:53but look at
24:55this,
24:56at the end
24:56of that reading,
24:57through righteousness
24:58to eternal
25:00life through
25:01Jesus Christ
25:02our Lord,
25:04that's that
25:04transformative
25:05power,
25:06and we see it
25:07in Romans 3.20,
25:09don't we?
25:09therefore by
25:11the deeds
25:11of the law
25:12no flesh
25:13shall be
25:13justified
25:14in his sight,
25:15for by the
25:16law is the
25:17knowledge of
25:18sin,
25:18that's exactly
25:19what we were
25:20just reading
25:20there in
25:21Romans 5,
25:23that by the
25:25knowledge of
25:26the law is
25:26sin,
25:27in fact some
25:29translations
25:29refer to
25:30the law as
25:32a teacher
25:33or a
25:33schoolmaster
25:34even,
25:36and so we
25:37understand we're
25:38taught through
25:39the law
25:40that we need
25:41salvation,
25:41that we are
25:42sinners and
25:43therefore need
25:44a savior,
25:44and in Romans
25:466.23 he
25:47says for the
25:48wages of sin
25:49is death,
25:50but the gift
25:51of God is
25:51eternal life
25:52in Christ
25:54Jesus our
25:54Lord,
25:55you see
25:55everything is
25:56in Christ,
25:58through Christ,
25:59of Christ,
26:00everything is
26:02of him,
26:03we can do
26:03nothing without
26:04him,
26:05we are nothing
26:06without him,
26:07and we
26:07have nothing
26:08without him,
26:12and that's
26:13why the
26:14Lord could
26:14then assure
26:15the Apostle
26:16Paul in
26:172 Corinthians
26:1812.9,
26:19my grace
26:20is sufficient
26:21for you,
26:22for my grace
26:23is made
26:24perfect in
26:25weakness,
26:27Barry was
26:28saying earlier
26:28on and we
26:29were agreeing
26:30with him,
26:30and I
26:31outside were
26:32just agreeing
26:32with him
26:33before with
26:33the start
26:34of the
26:34service,
26:35when we
26:35were talking
26:36about sin
26:38and so on,
26:39that we
26:40still have
26:40this propensity
26:43towards sin,
26:44even as
26:44Christians,
26:45after 40
26:47years,
26:4750 years,
26:4860 years,
26:50you know,
26:50we can still
26:51have this
26:51propensity
26:52towards sin
26:54in various
26:54ways,
26:59but his
27:00grace,
27:01grace,
27:01the Lord's
27:02grace is
27:03sufficient for
27:04us,
27:04for his
27:05grace is
27:06made perfect
27:07in weakness,
27:08so day by
27:09day we
27:10experience
27:11God's grace
27:12in our
27:13lives,
27:14where sin
27:15abounds,
27:17grace abounds
27:18even more
27:19so,
27:19and this
27:21highlights that
27:22sustaining role
27:23of grace in
27:25each and every
27:25one of our
27:26lives,
27:27you see,
27:28as a final
27:29point about
27:29God's grace
27:30shown to us,
27:30we need to
27:31understand that
27:32just as God
27:33gave us this
27:34gift of grace,
27:35there's the
27:36hope and the
27:37expectation that
27:39we'll not only
27:39be using it as
27:41a blessing for
27:42us,
27:43but that we,
27:45just as we
27:46were blessed
27:47and we are
27:48blessed day by
27:49day by the
27:50grace of God
27:50working in
27:51ourselves,
27:52that we would
27:53eventually share
27:54it and bless
27:55others by paying
27:56it forwards,
27:57as it were,
27:57so that once
27:59others see how
28:00God's gift of
28:01grace has
28:01blessed us
28:02and changed
28:03us,
28:03that others
28:04will also
28:05look for it
28:05and then
28:06they'll also
28:07want to accept
28:08it and
28:10do the
28:11same,
28:11so it becomes
28:12almost like a
28:13self-perpetuating
28:14cycle to the
28:16glory of God,
28:17that's why
28:18it's great to
28:19share what
28:21God is doing
28:21in our lives,
28:22it's great to
28:23share amongst
28:24us and with
28:25others how
28:26God has
28:28worked in us,
28:29what he's done
28:30day by day,
28:31we were really
28:32blessed with
28:33Octavian this
28:33morning when we
28:34were chatting to
28:35him this morning
28:36after the service
28:37of what God's
28:38been doing in
28:39him in this
28:40last week and
28:41the grace that
28:42he's poured out
28:43on him in this
28:44last week as
28:45well and
28:47Kathleen and
28:48I were just
28:48so blessed
28:49hearing that
28:49and so excited
28:50and you know
28:52it builds each
28:53and every one
28:54of us up,
28:54it's not just
28:55something that
28:55we absorb
28:57and then just
28:58hide away
28:59within ourselves,
29:01it's there for
29:02a reason,
29:04so to close
29:05up what I
29:06want us to
29:06do is just
29:07quickly look
29:08at this
29:09grace,
29:11let's look
29:12at these
29:12verses that
29:14we started
29:14with and
29:16to understand
29:16this
29:18of what
29:19God says
29:21about it,
29:23so let's
29:24go through
29:24those verses
29:25very quickly
29:26once again
29:27from Titus
29:282,
29:2811,
29:2915,
29:30first of
29:30all,
29:31the grace
29:32of God
29:32that brings
29:33salvation
29:34has appeared
29:35to all men,
29:36so you see
29:36it brings
29:37salvation
29:38and that
29:39reminds me
29:40of John
29:401,
29:4014,
29:41the word
29:42became flesh
29:43full of
29:44grace and
29:45truth
29:46and it's
29:47the word
29:47that has
29:48brought us
29:48that salvation
29:49and it
29:51teaches us
29:52that denying
29:52ungodliness
29:53and worldly
29:54lusts,
29:55we should
29:56live soberly,
29:57righteously
29:58and godly
29:59in the
30:00present age
30:02looking for
30:03that blessed
30:04hope and
30:05glorious appearing
30:06of our
30:07great God
30:08and Saviour
30:08Jesus Christ,
30:09so it's not
30:10just for the
30:10now,
30:11but it gives
30:12us something
30:12to look
30:13forward to,
30:15that blessed
30:16hope,
30:17that glorious
30:18appearing
30:18of our
30:19great God
30:20and Saviour
30:21Jesus Christ,
30:22we're reminded
30:23that that
30:24grace is
30:25for now
30:26and for
30:27ongoing
30:27until we're
30:29face to face
30:30with our
30:31Redeemer,
30:32for he gave
30:33himself
30:34for us
30:35and it's
30:37interesting
30:37because again
30:38that word
30:38gave,
30:39echarise,
30:40so even
30:41in gave
30:42there's a
30:43little bit
30:43of haris
30:44in there
30:45as well,
30:47so in
30:48the word
30:48that was
30:49used there,
30:50that he
30:50might redeem
30:51us from
30:52every lawless
30:53deed and
30:54purify for
30:55himself his
30:56own special
30:56people,
30:57zealous
30:58for good
30:59works,
30:59you know,
31:00good works
31:01is for
31:03God's own
31:03special people
31:04as it says
31:05there,
31:05this is
31:06after salvation,
31:08this isn't
31:08for salvation,
31:10this is
31:10once we
31:11are saved,
31:11we're
31:12zealous
31:12for good
31:13works,
31:14not good
31:15works so
31:15that we
31:16can be
31:16saved,

31:19to say

31:21speak these
31:22things,
31:23exhort
31:24and rebuke
31:26with all
31:26authority,
31:27let no
31:28one despise
31:29you,
31:29so we
31:31need to
31:31speak them
31:32out to
31:33one another
31:34and to
31:34others,
31:35we need
31:36to exhort
31:37and rebuke
31:39with all
31:39authority,
31:40it says,
31:41but don't
31:42let anyone
31:43despise you,
31:44you know,
31:44it's easy
31:46to be
31:47scared off,
31:49isn't it,
31:49it's easy
31:50to be scared
31:51off from
31:52saying things
31:53that we
31:54should be
31:55saying to
31:55one another,
31:56to sharing
31:57things,
31:58it's easy
31:59to be
32:00afraid of
32:01being despised,
32:02it's easy
32:03to be
32:03afraid of
32:04being laughed
32:05at or
32:05whatever,
32:06especially if
32:06it's a
32:06non-Christian,
32:08but let
32:09no one
32:10despise
32:10you,
32:11and then
32:12he goes
32:13on in
32:14chapter 3
32:15verse 1,
32:17telling us,
32:18giving us
32:18seven things
32:19in a
32:20believer's
32:20life,
32:21which should
32:22be a
32:22testimony
32:23to the
32:24world,
32:26using our
32:27grace,
32:27so he
32:28says,
32:29remind them
32:29to be
32:31subject to
32:31rulers and
32:32authorities,
32:33there's the
32:34first thing
32:34we must be
32:35doing to
32:36testify that
32:37God is
32:38worked in
32:39us,
32:39to obey,
32:41he says,
32:42and I really
32:42don't like
32:43that much,
32:44you know,
32:44because it's
32:45hard to
32:46obey,
32:47isn't it,
32:47especially
32:48when it
32:48doesn't
32:49specify
32:49who,
32:50who am I
32:51supposed to
32:51obey?
32:52Well,
32:53basically,
32:54anybody,
32:55as long as
32:56it's not
32:56pushing me
32:57towards going
32:58against God,
33:00so it's
33:02quite broad,
33:03really,
33:03in many
33:04ways,
33:06so,
33:08subject to
33:09rulers and
33:09authorities,
33:10obey,
33:11and be
33:12ready for
33:12every good
33:13work,
33:14there's that
33:14good work
33:15again,
33:15for the
33:16believer,
33:17not for
33:17salvation,
33:19fourth,
33:19speak evil
33:20of no one,
33:22fifth,
33:23be peaceable,
33:24next,
33:25be gentle,
33:26and finally,
33:27show all
33:29humility
33:29to all
33:30men,
33:31so,
33:32when we're
33:33doing those
33:34things,
33:35that's an
33:36expression of
33:37what God
33:38has done in
33:39us,
33:39of that grace
33:40of God
33:41that has
33:41worked in
33:42us,
33:42and is
33:43working in
33:44us,
33:44day by
33:45day,
33:45and people
33:46see,
33:46when they
33:47see those
33:48things,
33:48they will
33:49be drawn
33:50to God,
33:52for we
33:53ourselves,
33:53now,
33:53here's the
33:54interesting one,
33:55in verse
33:55three,
33:56we ourselves
33:57were also,
33:58now,
33:58this is the
33:59bit we
33:59mustn't
34:00forget,
34:01it's not
34:02a them
34:02and us,
34:04because we
34:05were also
34:06once foolish,
34:08disobedient,
34:09deceived,
34:11serving various
34:12lusts and
34:13pleasures,
34:14living in
34:14malice and
34:15envy,
34:16hateful and
34:17hating one
34:18another,
34:19does any of
34:20that sound
34:20familiar?
34:21I said,
34:21no,
34:21it does for
34:22my life,
34:23my past
34:23life,
34:28this should
34:28give us
34:29more empathy
34:30with those
34:31we're speaking
34:32to and
34:33who we're
34:34testifying
34:34to,
34:36but,
34:37when the
34:37kindness
34:38and love
34:39of God
34:40our Savior
34:41toward man
34:41appeared,
34:42not by
34:43works of
34:43righteousness,
34:44and here we
34:44get it yet
34:45again,
34:46he keeps
34:46pushing this,
34:47not by
34:48works of
34:49righteousness,
34:49which we
34:50have done,
34:50but according
34:51to his
34:52mercy,
34:53he saved
34:53us through
34:54the washing
34:55of regeneration
34:56and renewing
34:57of the Holy
34:58Spirit,
34:58whom he
34:59poured out
35:00on us
35:00abundantly
35:01through Jesus
35:03Christ our
35:04Savior,
35:06that having
35:07been justified
35:08by his
35:09grace,
35:09we should
35:10become heirs
35:11according to
35:13the hope of
35:13eternal life,
35:14so we become
35:15heirs according
35:17to the hope
35:17of eternal life,
35:19because we've
35:19been justified
35:20by his
35:22faith,
35:22and that's
35:23why we
35:23can look
35:24for that,
35:24as it said
35:25in the
35:25previous
35:26chapter,
35:27we can
35:27look for
35:28that blessed
35:28hope and
35:29a glorious
35:30appearing of
35:30our great
35:31God and
35:31Savior,
35:32Jesus
35:33Christ,
35:34and this
35:35is a
35:36faithful
35:36saying,
35:37and these
35:38things I
35:39want you to
35:39affirm
35:40constantly,
35:41keep affirming
35:42them,
35:43keep saying
35:43them,
35:44that those
35:44who have
35:45believed in
35:46God should
35:47be careful
35:47to maintain
35:48good works,
35:50there we've
35:50got the
35:50good works
35:51yet again,
35:52for the
35:53believer,
35:54not for
35:55salvation,
35:56these things
35:57are good
35:58and profitable
35:59to all
36:00mankind,
36:03so over
36:04and over
36:05we've been
36:06told the
36:07same thing,
36:08this message
36:09just over
36:11and over
36:11keeps coming
36:12through about
36:13the grace
36:14of God,
36:15and understanding
36:16that just
36:18as God's
36:18grace has
36:19been poured
36:20out on
36:20us,
36:21so we
36:22need to
36:22be sharing
36:23that with
36:24others,
36:24we need
36:26to be
36:26using that
36:28grace in
36:29ourselves to
36:30reach out
36:31to others
36:31and to
36:32testify to
36:33others as
36:34hard as
36:34it can
36:35be.
36:37I think
36:38I'm going
36:38to stop
36:39there,
36:39there's
36:40plenty there
36:40to think
36:41of and
36:41I do
36:43encourage you
36:44at home,
36:45read through
36:46those once
36:46again because
36:47they really
36:48are wonderful
36:49verses and
36:50maybe read
36:50all of
36:51Titus,
36:51it's not a
36:52very big
36:52book anyway
36:53and see
36:54how it all
36:55fits in
36:56so beautifully.
