00:20Welcome, in the name of the good Lord Jesus, to Chartridge, wherever you are. Welcome.

00:26How lovely to see you here. Today we are going to take a fresh look at the secrets of the

00:32kingdom.

00:33And I hope there will be something you don't know, because they are all very well-known scriptures that teach

00:39us about the secrets of the kingdom.

00:43I put my email address there, and anyone who would like to have the slideshow can just send me an

00:51Jesus said to his followers in Matthew 13, 11,

00:56The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you.

01:01The secrets of the kingdom.

01:03The secret things belong to the Lord our God,

01:07but the things revealed belong to us and to our children,

01:12forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

01:17So we don't know it all.

01:19There are secret things, and there are things revealed.

01:23There are also things beyond understanding,

01:26which is quite a comforting phrase, beyond understanding.

01:30And we can dig down and see what treasures we can find.

01:35And in the King James Version, there's an interesting verse, Psalm 25, 14,

01:41The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him.

01:46But what is this secret?

01:49We need wisdom, but where can wisdom be found?

01:52It's on the back of Andy's car, out in the car park.

01:56But it actually comes originally, not in Proverbs, but from Job 28, 28.

02:01I love Job.

02:02I've preached on him here for fun.

02:04The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, said Job.

02:09And that's years before Proverbs were written, maybe a thousand years earlier.

02:14The wise wisdom of these ancient people is fascinating.

02:18Isaiah 33, 6 has spoken to me over the years.

02:22He, that's the Lord, will be the sure foundation for your times,

02:27a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge.

02:31The fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.

02:35Paul spoke about God's secret wisdom.

02:40No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory

02:47before time began.

02:50None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the land

02:56of glory.

02:57However, as it is written, no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has

03:06prepared for those who love him.

03:08But God has revealed it to us by his spirit.

03:12So there's two secrets already revealed.

03:15Strangely, the fear of the Lord and the Holy Spirit, which are tied together in that one verse of Psalm

03:2225, 14.

03:251 Corinthians 2, 14.

03:28This is a very interesting verse.

03:30It spoke to me lively years ago.

03:32I thought, why can't I understand this and that?

03:35The man without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the spirit of God,

03:40for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

03:47Paul explained that the secret wisdom of God has been revealed to us by the Holy Spirit.

03:54And so there's this huge challenge, are we led by the Spirit?

03:58I would venture to suggest, if you were not led by the Spirit, you would not be here now.

04:04The enemy doesn't want to hear this sort of thing.

04:06So there is this link between the fear of the Lord and the Holy Spirit.

04:12This was even true in the case of Jesus.

04:15Have you seen that?

04:16You've heard it every Christmas in the festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

04:22A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse, from his roots a branch will bear fruit.

04:29The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

04:35the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

04:40And he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

04:44So I know that you can translate it different ways, but that's what it says in most translations.

04:52Jesus delights in the fear of the Lord.

04:54What has he to fear?

04:56Well, that you can work on.

04:58I think that it is true that if you are contemplating a deliberate sin,

05:03you might fear God and that fear of the Lord might prove very helpful.

05:09But still, why fear the Lord?

05:10Is he not love?

05:11Does he not love us?

05:13Do we not love him?

05:14Surely we are called to love and live by faith and not by fear.

05:18Yes, indeed.

05:18But when temptation arises, a wonderful verse is Exodus 20.20.

05:26That's one to learn by heart.

05:29Moses said to the people,

05:31Do not be afraid.

05:33He said,

05:33The fear of the Lord will be with you to keep you from sinning.

05:38Then there's the mysteries.

05:39And he's described way back in Daniel 2.28 as the revealer of mysteries.

05:47A mystery kept hidden but now revealed.

05:51Colossians, St. Paul again.

05:53Colossians 1.26.

05:54The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations,

05:59but is now disclosed to the saints.

06:02That's us.

06:03To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery,

06:11which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

06:15You don't necessarily feel that.

06:17Don't know if you believe it, but it's what the Bible tells us.

06:21And of course, remember how Jesus said in John 14 that he, the Holy Spirit, is with you and will

06:29be in you.

06:31Christ in you, the hope of glory.

06:34So we proclaim him, and that is a wonderful hope.

06:40And he is in you, and this is what makes you a temple of the Holy Spirit.

06:46That's what the Bible tells us, and it's not a question of how you feel.

06:50It's fact.

06:51It's what the words say.

06:52The message of the cross, 1 Corinthians 1.18,

06:56is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God.

07:03Try and take that in.

07:04The message of the cross, when you share it, is powerful.

07:09The message of the cross is the power of God, and that message is also the message of the kingdom.

07:16Now, to make a break from the heavy Bible verse, after Bible verse,

07:21I have a story to share.

07:23Has anybody read Land of Hope and Glory, by Bruce Atkinson?

07:29British Revival Through the Years.

07:32It contains a lot of wonderful stories, and the one that's appropriate for now is the one about Patrick, who

07:39went to Ireland.

07:40You've heard of him.

07:41You may not know the story.

07:43I find it fascinating.

07:45Patrick, or Patricius, was a Roman Briton, most likely born in the Lake District,

07:51Cumbria, around 390.

07:55His father was a leading Roman person,

07:58and Patrick was leading a quiet, comfortable life in the family home,

08:03when a band of marauding Irish pirates kidnapped him,

08:08and took him to Ireland to sell as a slave.

08:12He was sold to a farmer in County Mayo.

08:16This terrible situation brought Patrick to his knees.

08:22And the story goes on.

08:25He escaped from the pirates and the farm and got back home to England.

08:30But he had powerful dreams and visions calling him back to Ireland,

08:35which was a very heathen place at that time.

08:39In fact, Patrick was to become Ireland's Elijah,

08:44preaching the gospel with signs and wonders.

08:48So Patrick returned to Ireland as an evangelist.

08:52Previous church missionary attempts back in those days had failed among the Irish.

08:58The Holy Spirit encouraged Patrick when he returned to Ireland like a holy hurricane.

09:04Ireland was a land ruled then by 100 chieftains and their clans.

09:11Patrick travelled on foot from clan to clan,

09:15preaching the gospel, healing the sick,

09:17and showed such love in the way he treated people

09:20that souls began to come to Christ in their hundreds and then thousands.

09:25In his final Confessions book, he remarked,

09:30One should fish well and diligently,

09:33just as the Lord foretells and teaches, saying,

09:36Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.

09:39Again, through the prophets.

09:41Behold, I am sending forth many fishers and hunters,

09:45says the Lord.

09:46He put very much into practice

09:50Peter's Pentecost sermon of two weeks ago.

09:54Repent and be baptised.

09:57Every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ,

09:59for the forgiveness of your sins,

10:00and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

10:03The promise is for you and your children

10:06and for all who are far off,

10:08for all whom the Lord our God will call.

10:11God's promise.

10:12Patrick landed in County Wicklow in 432 AD.

10:17That takes something to get your mind around, 432.

10:21Jerome's Latin translation was around 400.

10:24We don't know if he had that.

10:25That's after Constantine,

10:27and before St. Augustine, so called,

10:31came from Rome to convert England to Catholicism.

10:35So we have an earlier form of Celtic Christianity here.

10:40Patrick travelled to Tara.

10:42If ever there was a high place,

10:44a throne of Satan, this was it.

10:47The Supreme Chieftain, or Ard Rai, of Ireland,

10:51Leo Hare, had called the chiefs together

10:54to a pagan festival at the Druid capital.

10:58Patrick was determined to take the battle

11:00into the heart of the enemy's camp

11:02and dethrone Satan and paganism from Ireland forever.

11:07It happened the feast coincided with Easter.

11:10The chiefs were all assembled,

11:13along with the most powerful Druids in the land.

11:18Leo Hare decreed that all the fires

11:21throughout his kingdom should be extinguished

11:23until the Druid fire was lit.

11:26Patrick, in defiance of false religion,

11:29lit a Paschal fire on the opposite side

11:31of the valley on the hill.

11:33The Druids spoke to Leo Hare,

11:35O king, live forever!

11:37This fire which has been lighted

11:38in defiance of the royal edict

11:40will blaze forever in this land

11:42unless it be this very night extinguished.

11:45The next day, the Ard Rai, the chief Druid,

11:50and all his chiefs took 22 chariots

11:53to confront Patrick at the fire.

11:55When they arrived, Patrick greeted them with the words,

11:59Some may go in chariots and some on horses,

12:02but we will walk in the name of our God.

12:04Which I think is an amazing line to quote

12:07because how did he know?

12:09Psalm 27 and Jeremiah 16, 16, way back in 340 AD.

12:15It speaks volumes of the man.

12:18A supernatural power confrontation took place

12:21between the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of hell

12:24reminiscent of Elijah and the prophets of Baal.

12:28Leo Hare's men attempted to put out the fire,

12:30but it was supernaturally unquenchable.

12:33The Druids, through their incantations,

12:36brought dark clouds to cover the hill,

12:38but Patrick prayed and sunlight burst through

12:41and dispelled the demonic manifestations.

12:44One of the leading Druids began to levitate

12:46high in the air as a show of power.

12:50Patrick knelt in prayer,

12:52and the power of God threw the flying Druid

12:55against a rock and smashed his head.

12:57The display of Holy Ghost signs and wonders

13:00eventually convinced all there

13:02that Jesus is Lord and Ireland

13:04was spiritually blown wide open

13:06for the further proclamation of the gospel.

13:09Patrick founded a church wherever he went,

13:13and by the time he died in 460 AD,

13:16after 30 years of preaching,

13:18he had put in place 350 bishops or overseers

13:22to lead the pastors of the many churches he had planted.

13:26Patrick converted the Irish to Christianity

13:29without converting them to Roman culture,

13:31and of course Roman Catholicism had hardly started,

13:34not in England.

13:36To be Christian no longer meant to be Roman,

13:38and by the time he died,

13:40slavery was outlawed in Ireland.

13:44Did you know that?

13:45I didn't know that.

13:46And it has never been taken up again by the Irish.

13:50Patrick's ministry laid the foundation

13:53for the Christian church in Ireland,

13:56and his work was picked up by men such as Columba

13:59and St Aidan after him.

14:02It was some years later,

14:04about 600 years later,

14:06I think, that Henry II,

14:09sent by the Pope,

14:10went to Ireland to convert them to Roman Catholicism,

14:13which is where they are in many cases today,

14:16and most Irish don't know that.

14:19Well, in my last 30 years of retirement,

14:22I've helped people write three books on church history.

14:24It's fascinating.

14:25There's the saints like Patrick,

14:27and there's the wrong teaching,

14:28and there's the evil one,

14:29and it's still going on.

14:31There's nothing new under the sun.

14:35Yes, Peter's Pentecost sermon.

14:37So that is how, in my opinion,

14:40Alpha, or Christianity Explored,

14:43or any proclamation of Jesus should end.

14:47The message there is,

14:49believe, repent, be baptized,

14:51and you'll receive the Holy Spirit.

14:54Four clear steps.

14:56Many of us have been very badly birthed.

14:58My birthing process took about 40 years.

15:02Sometimes I feel I'm still only just starting out.

15:04But you know what I mean.

15:07So, now, after Peter had said that,

15:12actually, before Peter had said that,

15:14I want to go back.

15:15This was a fresh revelation to me preparing this talk.

15:18At the end of Luke,

15:20which is a few verses in Luke's mind

15:23before Acts chapter 2,

15:24at the end of Luke chapter 24,

15:27a few weeks earlier,

15:29well, in that Pentecost sermon,

15:33Peter was doing exactly what Jesus had told him to do.

15:37Repentance and forgiveness of sins

15:39will be preached in his name

15:41to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

15:44Peter did exactly that.

15:46He preached repentance and forgiveness of sins

15:49in the name of Jesus.

15:50What did he say?

15:52Repent and be baptized, every one of you,

15:54in the name of Jesus,

15:55for the forgiveness of your sins,

15:56and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

15:59Peter said exactly what Jesus had told him to say.

16:02I'd never seen that before.

16:03It's so clear.

16:04It's exactly those things.

16:06Peter did exactly what he'd been told by Jesus

16:08just before Jesus ascended.

16:10And Peter did the same thing in the next sermon.

16:13And Paul preaches the same, same things.

16:15Jesus had also said,

16:17you should be my witnesses.

16:21And Peter was indeed,

16:23he said in Acts 2.32,

16:25God has raised his Jesus to life

16:27and we are all witnesses of,

16:29I like that, of the fact.

16:31It's reported as a fact, the resurrection.

16:34We are all witnesses of the fact.

16:37With many other words,

16:38he warned them and pleaded with them,

16:40save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

16:44Save yourselves.

16:45And those who accepted his message

16:46were baptized, 3,000.

16:50So, that's interesting.

16:51Save yourselves means we have to respond.

16:55It's not automatic that we have salvation.

16:57We're told to do something.

16:59Not do nothing, but respond.

17:01And the biblical response is to repent,

17:04which means rethink how we live and what we do.

17:07And it's very easy to be challenged on many areas

17:10because we're not perfect.

17:13And then be baptized into the name of Jesus.

17:16And if we do fall into sin again,

17:18think of King David and Bathsheba.

17:21He couldn't have fallen further.

17:23He repented and God forgave him.

17:25He was convicted by that wonderful Nathan speech.

17:30And he had the common sense to repent and see he had sinned.

17:34But how could he do that?

17:36He loved the law.

17:37Psalm 119, I love your law.

17:39How could he sin so much?

17:41Well, I think it's easier to get complacent as time goes by.

17:45And he's powerful and everyone comes and praises him.

17:49And that can happen to a pastor.

17:52If they're praised, they can think that they are the answer to everything.

17:57Not the case.

17:59But repentance, I once heard a sermon,

18:01repentance is an ever-open door.

18:03It's always there.

18:06And Jesus is always saying,

18:08Come, however old you are, come to me.

18:12He said to Nicodemus,

18:14No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.

18:18And no one can enter the kingdom unless he is born again,

18:22of water and spirit.

18:23And when John the Baptist got going,

18:27people came to him.

18:28What did he say?

18:30You brood of vipers.

18:32He recognized the evil of the proud Sanhedrin,

18:36the Jews of Jerusalem,

18:37who went to test him with their questions.

18:39Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

18:43Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

18:46The late David Pawson said to me,

18:48You wouldn't baptize anyone

18:50could not show some proof of repentance.

18:54And that rules out anyone too young to understand

18:57and speak for themselves.

18:59So Paul gave this warning.

19:02These people will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

19:04Not everyone will enter.

19:06It's a strong warning.

19:07I sent this to our local bishop of Oxford, Stephen Croft,

19:10because he's written a 50-page leaflet

19:13saying it's okay to be sexually immoral.

19:17Well, cohabitation and homosexuality,

19:21what matters is that you love in truth.

19:23But the truth is what the Bible says.

19:26Do you not know that the wicked

19:28will not inherit the kingdom of God?

19:30Do not be deceived.

19:32Neither the sexually immoral,

19:34nor idolaters, nor adulterers,

19:37nor prostitutes, homosexual offenders,

19:41thieves, the greedy, drunkards,

19:44slanderers, swindlers,

19:45will inherit the kingdom of God.

19:48I don't think that's what we all were,

19:51but I think we still have the same temptations.

19:54So we have to keep our humility.

19:56And then he ends with,

19:58you were washed,

19:59you were sanctified,

20:00you were justified

20:01in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

20:04by the Spirit of God.

20:08There is another group

20:09who can't enter the kingdom of heaven.

20:13And

20:15I think these are the self-righteous people.

20:18They appear at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

20:20In effect, they say,

20:22didn't we do well?

20:23And Jesus replied,

20:25I never knew you.

20:26But consider Matthew 18, 13.

20:28I tell you the truth.

20:31Unless you change and become like little children,

20:34you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

20:37You may remember the story of how a newspaper published a question.

20:41What is wrong with the world?

20:44And a well-known person wrote in and said,

20:47Sir,

20:48you're sincerely,

20:49I am.

20:51Very clever.

20:52But actually,

20:52I am is the answer,

20:54not the problem.

20:55The problem with the world is sin.

20:57You could argue that all the wars are caused by sin.

21:00And your iniquities,

21:02your sin,

21:02has separated you from God.

21:04Isaiah 59, 2.

21:07Repentance is such a gift.

21:10But as the Jews concluded,

21:12in Acts chapter 11,

21:13at the end of the story about Cornelius,

21:16they said,

21:18God had granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.

21:24The last reference to repent in the Bible

21:29is in Revelation 16,

21:32verses 9 and 11.

21:33They refused to repent and glorify him.

21:36They refused to repent what they had done.

21:39Now,

21:40it stands to reason that if God is slow,

21:43if Jesus is slow in coming back,

21:45because he wants everyone to come to faith and repentance,

21:48he won't come back until there's no more repentance.

21:52I think that's one of the signs that has to be fulfilled

21:55before Jesus comes back.

21:57There'll be no more repentance.

21:58And then Jesus will come back.

22:00And if they're coming to faith by the thousand in Iran,

22:04and so many more need to,

22:06and can do in the world,

22:07I don't think he'll come back tonight.

22:09But there are other opinions on that.

22:17What do we have to do?

22:19Enter through the narrow gate.

22:21Wide is the gate,

22:22and broad is the road,

22:23and leads to destruction.

22:24And many enter through it.

22:26Small is the gate,

22:27and narrow the road that leads to life,

22:29and only a few find it.

22:31That word, destruction,

22:32where does that lead you to?

22:35We all have to do something to recognize Jesus is the gate and the way.

22:42Only a few find it.

22:44What's this about destruction?

22:48Well, that's what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount.

22:52And the first teaching,

22:54the first words of John the Baptist and Jesus

22:57are the same in Matthew.

22:59Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.

23:02Not often you get a sermon on that.

23:03You get occasional ones that seek to convict you of sin.

23:08But we just have to keep short accounts with God

23:10and keep on confessing and turning to him.

23:14Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.

23:16Now, the last teaching of Jesus,

23:20before his ascension,

23:21because he teaches more when he came,

23:23when he spoke through John in Revelation,

23:26but the last teaching before ascension is

23:28he appeared to them over a period of 40 days

23:32and spoke about the kingdom of God.

23:34Paul, in his first teaching,

23:37as soon as he was converted,

23:39in Acts chapter 9,

23:40he immediately could preach

23:42that Jesus is the Son of God.

23:45And two verses later,

23:47he was proving Jesus is the Messiah from scriptures,

23:50just a few days after conversion

23:52on the road to Damascus.

23:54He knew the scriptures already so well,

23:56but he still didn't see who Jesus was

23:57until he was blinded for three days

24:00and he could think through those scriptures.

24:01What have I done wrong?

24:03And he has the call

24:04and how faithfully he answered it.

24:06The last line of Acts,

24:08yes, there's two points.

24:10Jesus is the Son of David,

24:12the Messiah and the prophet Moses

24:14wrote about in the law.

24:16Jesus is actually more than just a prophet.

24:19He is our God.

24:21Now, St. Thomas made that famous confession

24:24in John 20,

24:25my Lord and my God.

24:27But where else do you get that from?

24:29Did Jesus claim to be God?

24:31Did he go around saying,

24:32I am God?

24:33He did not,

24:34but he showed it.

24:36And this is a favourite cross-reference of mine.

24:38when John the Baptist was thrown in prison.

24:41Jesus did not overthrow Roman rule

24:44or release him from prison.

24:46So John the Baptist sent two disciples

24:49to ask Jesus,

24:50are you the one

24:52or should we expect someone else?

24:55And what was the answer?

24:57The answer is that Jesus replied,

25:01go back and report to John

25:03what you see and hear.

25:05The blind receive sight,

25:07the lame walk,

25:08those who have leprosy are cured,

25:10the deaf hear,

25:11the dead are raised,

25:12and good news is preached to the poor.

25:15What did that mean to John the Baptist?

25:17Well, unlike us,

25:19he probably knew Isaiah by heart.

25:21And you, Deuteronomy.

25:23He knew a lot of it.

25:24They learned it by heart.

25:26And John the Baptist

25:28would have seen exactly

25:29what that meant.

25:31In fact,

25:32Isaiah 35, 4-6,

25:35in verse 4,

25:36be strong, do not fear,

25:37your God will come,

25:39your God will come.

25:41And then will the eyes of the blind be opened,

25:45the ears of the deaf unstopped,

25:47then will the lame leap like a deer,

25:50a mute tongue shout for joy.

25:52That's a big statement

25:54to be able to say

25:55if it wasn't true,

25:56but go and tell him

25:57what you have seen.

25:58You've seen this happen.

25:59Tell John all that.

26:00That's much more powerful

26:01to John the Baptist

26:02than saying,

26:03oh yes,

26:03I'm the Messiah.

26:05Look what I've done to fulfill.

26:07I'm not doing it as a Messiah,

26:08but as your God.

26:11Isn't that interesting?

26:12It's your God.

26:16And Matthew also

26:18would have noticed,

26:19I haven't got there yet.

26:20But I've got another one first.

26:23Okay.

26:24Yes, also he would have known

26:26Psalm 118,

26:28which you may or may not have noticed.

26:29It was sung when Jesus rode into Jerusalem,

26:32blessed is he who comes

26:33in the name of the Lord.

26:35You came here tonight

26:37in the name of the Lord.

26:38But Jesus is more than that.

26:41The Lord is God.

26:43You are my God.

26:44You are my God.

26:45That's the last verses

26:47of Psalm 118.

26:47That's what they sang over Jesus

26:50as he came into Jerusalem.

26:52And of course,

26:53Matthew comments on

26:55Zechariah 9.9.

26:57See, your king comes to you,

27:41the fowls of the air

27:42come to nest in it.

27:44That's the demonic spirits.

27:46At harvest on judgment day,

27:48the angels will weed out the weeds.

27:51And when it comes to the fish,

27:56you've got that phrase in there twice.

27:58I remember this from my childhood.

27:59The weeping and gnashing of teeth.

28:02It sort of sticks, doesn't it?
