00:00Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg says Malaysians should master both English and Mandarin to stay competitive globally.
00:08He said improving English would not result in a neglect of Bahasa Malaysia or diminish patriotism as both languages are
00:16important.
00:17Abang Johari said Malaysia must be in a position to communicate confidently with global trading partners to strengthen its position
00:24as a trading nation.
00:26He said Sarawak's recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate was intended to enable more Bumiputras to master Mandarin and seize
00:35trade opportunities with China.
00:38Sarawak has since 2016 recognized the Unified Examination Certificate for entry into the state civil service, admission to state-owned
00:47higher education institutions, and eligibility for Yayasan Sarawak Education Loans.
00:52Abang Johari was reported by the Dayak Daily as having made the remarks while highlighting the importance of producing a
00:59multilingual workforce.
