00:00Liverpool City Council's joined a national coalition calling for an end to gambling advertising as part of its commitment to
00:08reducing gambling-related harm across the city.
00:10The council's announced it's joining the coalition to end gambling ads known as SEGA.
00:16The alliance brings together local authorities, public health organisations, charities and campaign groups that are calling for tighter restrictions on
00:25gambling advertising across the UK.
00:27The decision builds on Liverpool's Reducing Gambling Harms Action Plan, launched earlier this year.
00:33The plan focuses on preventing gambling-related harm through earlier intervention, improving access to support and reducing people's exposure to
00:41gambling.
00:42According to Liverpool City Council, around one in six young adults in the city experience gambling-related harm.
00:48The council says men and people facing financial disadvantage are at greater risk, with gambling linked to debt, poor mental
00:55health, relationship breakdown, homelessness and involvement with the criminal justice system.
01:01The council also says the gambling industry spends around £2 billion a year on advertising with marketing appearing across television,
01:10social media, sport and public spaces.
01:12It argues that this level of exposure can normalise gambling, particularly for children.
01:19Councillor Harry Doyle says joining SEGA is an important part of the council's commitment to creating healthier environments and making
01:26support easier to access.
