00:00John's off, but the segment rolls on. Dear Stoney, you can send him in, dearjohnjansen
00:07at gmail.com. We read the questions every week. For Stoney, we've got the French Fry
00:12Bandit, cheaters, soccer fever, and going out to eat. We start with the French Fry
00:18Bandit. Dear Stoney, I feel like I'm going absolutely crazy for this being an argument,
00:22but I need someone to tell me if I messed up. My girlfriend is a French Fry Bandit. She
00:27always takes half of my French Fries without fail. We got to eat, get a burger, fries.
00:32I already know half are going to her. My issue is French Fries are one of my favorite foods.
00:37I have the palate of a child. Recently, we were out for dinner and I ordered my food and
00:41I ordered two sides of fries. She said she didn't want any. I said I wanted them anyway
00:47and ordered them. When the server dropped the food off, I pushed extra fries her way. She
00:51got upset and said she didn't want them. So I said, fine, I'll eat both. As we got to
00:57the car, she told me I was being a jerk and incredibly condescending to know exactly what
01:01to assume exactly what she wants. The kicker is, though, she ate those damn fries. She
01:06wanted the extra fries. I've been with her for over a year. Of course, I know she's going
01:10to eat the fries. She's been pissed about it ever since. I feel like I'm taking crazy
01:14pills. Was I wrong?
01:15No, you're absolutely right. There's no doubt about it because it was a subtle way, I think,
01:21of saying, hey, listen, you want my fries? Fine. But here's something better. You can
01:26have your own freaking fries. I mean, seriously.
01:31Why does this happen? Like, order the food you want to eat.
01:35Well, I know sometimes if I'm out to dinner, if it comes with fries, Cindy will take a couple
01:39fries. That's fine.
01:40A little tax.
01:41Yeah.
01:41But if you want my food, just order some of your own work.
01:46They have enough in the back.
01:47Yes.
01:49Talk to your partner. That's, if anything is wrong one way or the other, it's talk to
01:55your partner. This obviously does bother you, so express that. This bothers me. I will get
01:59you some fries.
02:02And tell her beforehand that, okay, I don't like it that you always pound on my fries.
02:09And I like eating them, so why don't I get you a side?
02:12Yeah.
02:13Talk about it. It comes down to communication.
02:15I agree with Craig on that, but also out of line in terms of eating that many extras.
02:19There's nothing wrong with taking a few, sharing and stuff, but you should be eating half the
02:23fries.
02:23If you're eating half someone's fries, we can get fries for you.
02:26Yes.
02:26He's absolutely in the right.
02:27What does she get? Take half of her stuff.
02:30Yeah.
02:30Well, some couples do that.
02:31I know.
02:32You order the half and half stuff.
02:34Yeah.
02:35Or I've seen people cut like a pizza in half, and then you end up getting half and half.
02:38Yeah. That's fine, but be on the same page, to Craig's point.
02:41Absolutely.
02:41And I don't know what it is. Is it like, as a woman, you don't want to seem like you're
02:44pigging out?
02:45Yes.
02:46You don't want to seem like you have bad manners.
02:48Yeah. They order that salad and Diet Coke. That's not really what they want to order,
02:53but they do it.
02:54They feel like they're judged if they get a gluttonous food or they're eating too much.
02:57It's not ladylike.
02:58Just get what you want.
02:59Yeah. Just order. Don't let other people pressure you.
03:01All right. This next one.
03:02Dear Stoney, the Spurs play-by-play guy had an Instagram story go viral because it seemed
03:08like his girlfriend posted from the account confessing he was cheating on her.
03:12My question is, how do you feel about a partner hacking into social media to share cheating
03:16with the world?
03:18That's awful.
03:19First of all, you should never hack into anybody's account.
03:22And if you think that your significant other is cheating, you confront them that way privately
03:29before you go public. I wish I would have seen that story, but that's really, you're
03:38no good. You're no good. You don't hack into somebody's social media account.
03:42I mean, cheating is no good too.
03:43Yeah, exactly.
03:44Confront them and then hack Stoney and then share it from the social media?
03:48No, I wouldn't. So I said, I don't think you should share it on social media anyway.
03:54Oh, no, this is bad form. I agree. I don't have nothing to add.
03:57I don't either. I mean, this is ridiculous to do it that go this route.
04:01Absolutely. Humiliate somebody.
04:04They're hurt, so they're lashing out.
04:06Yeah, that's awful.
04:07I mean, some would say don't do the crime if you don't want to do the time, but this
04:11is over the line.
04:13Soccer fever. Dear Stoney.
04:15Yeah, I want to keep following soccer after this World Cup.
04:18How do I pick a team when I'm not from any of these places overseas?
04:22Do I look for an underdog? Do I pick a good team?
04:24I want to pick someone that wins, but I also don't want to be a frontrunner.
04:28I'd love to know if you are the listeners of any specific team recommendations as well.
04:32Well, it depends. Are you talking about overseas?
04:36Are you talking about an MLS team?
04:39I wouldn't take the MLS team that's closest to us because they live in Ohio,
04:43Columbus Crew, right?
04:45Look, we have a team right here.
04:47It's not Major League, but Detroit FC.
04:50It's a lot of fun.
04:50People say who go to the games.
04:52I think when it comes to following, and I don't, but somebody from the Premier League,
04:58look to see who has the coolest kits, so to speak.
05:02Oh, look at that.
05:03Or the most recognizable player.
05:05I don't know who Mbappe plays for in his league over there, or you pick some players
05:12who are from here who play over there.
05:14So pick a star in this World Cup that you've appreciated, and then use them as the gateway.
05:18That happens more with sports now.
05:20People follow the star player, but use it as a way to get into a team.
05:24I've found there's a lot of media people, like basketball media.
05:28I know James Edwards, who covers the Knicks now for the Athletic.
05:32He used to be the Pistons guy.
05:33He's from around here.
05:34He's from Lansing.
05:35He's huge, and a lot of other guys are on the Spurs.
05:39Tottenham.
05:40Tottenham, yeah.
05:40I don't know why.
05:41It's EPL.
05:42Yeah.
05:43That's because of Wemby.
05:45Look, I don't know enough about these teams.
05:48Me neither.
05:48How do you feel about picking a good team versus a bad team versus a lovable loser?
05:53Well, don't take a team that might be relegated.
05:56It's a hard lesson to learn right away.
05:58Yes, absolutely.
05:59I don't know.
06:00Pick a team that has a cool name, like Crystal Palace.
06:03I don't know.
06:04You can do it however you find it?
06:07Yeah.
06:08That's the right answer.
06:09Make it your answer.
06:10Like, for instance, if I were to follow an EPL team, my EPL team would be Brighton, because
06:15it's the name of the city I grew up in.
06:17Yeah.
06:18Don't pick AC Milan.
06:20That's where Pulisic plays.
06:22Yeah.
06:25Fair enough.
06:27Like that?
06:28Yeah.
06:29I mean, but whoever you pick, stick with it.
06:31Yes.
06:33There are people, I know somebody whose son-in-law cares more about, I believe, its arsenal than
06:39almost any of the teams.
06:42Here?
06:42Yeah.
06:42Interesting.
06:43There are people that are just so into it.
06:44They get up every, you know, Saturday morning to watch.
06:48I have a friend that really follows Liverpool, and he actually made the trip over.
06:53Ah.
06:53I think it was last summer or the summer before, and he loved it.
06:56I mean, the soccer culture is great.
06:58Yes.
06:59But he has lived and died with the highs and the lows, and that's part of being a fan.
07:04So that's why I say, whoever you pick.
07:06Yes.
07:06They might be a frontrunner today.
07:07They could be a bottom feeder tomorrow.
07:09Absolutely.
07:09Ride the wave.
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:12That's the full experience of being a fan.
07:13Last question.
07:14Going out to eat.
07:15Dear Stoney, my wife and I disagree about what's cheaper, cooking at home or eating
07:20out.
07:21Some backstory.
07:22We both eat very differently.
07:23She's a vegetarian.
07:24I'm more of a meat and potatoes guy.
07:26Plus, we have three kids who tend to be picky as well.
07:29She says groceries for all these different combinations add up to more than just going
07:32out to eat.
07:33I don't think her math checks out at all.
07:35Who's right?
07:37Well, I think you're right.
07:39He's right, because it seems to me that, especially if the wife is a vegetarian, that means technically
07:46there's a lot of vegetables and stuff you're going to put in, obviously non-meat dishes,
07:52and I think they are probably cheaper if you get them at the supermarket and make it yourself.
07:59Mm-hmm.
07:59So I would say, for everything, it's cheaper to go to the grocery store.
08:04It's got to be.
08:06And I know the price of groceries have gone up.
08:08I get all that.
08:09Like I see people say, it's like the same.
08:12I can't imagine.
08:13No.
08:14They've got to pay someone to cook it at the restaurant.
08:16Right.
08:16You've got to tip your server.
08:17If you go to a good steakhouse, a great steak, I'm not talking about the $80 steak.
08:23A good place to steak, $35 for a steak.
08:26You're not spending that for a steak at Kroger.
08:30No.
08:31The currency is just different, right?
08:33It is more expensive, I would believe, monetarily to eat out.
08:38But as you guys would say, that you've got to cook the food.
08:42So you're spending time and effort to do that instead of paying for it, for someone to do that, doing
08:50dishes, getting groceries, etc.
08:52So, yeah, the currency is just different.
08:55I mean, how much is that trade-off worth it to you?
08:58It sounds like you're looking to lower your monetary usage, right?
09:06So maybe that's just a trade-off into time and groceries and that sort of thing.
09:11It's so much cheaper to eat at home and groceries than eating out.
09:14It's not even close.
09:15I mean, you're not even factoring things like tips and stuff like that.
09:20It's not even close.
09:22Maybe she feels this way, Greg, because she's doing the majority of the cooking or the cleaning or it just
09:28feels more intensive.
09:29Yeah.
09:30I'm sure the math is on this guy's side.
09:32Absolutely.
09:33And maybe you take over some of the cooking or the grocery shopping.
09:37You can prove your point that way, right?
09:39Exactly.
09:41Send him in.
09:42We do it every week.
09:43John will be back next week.
09:44Dear John Jansen at gmail.com.
09:46This week, it was Dear Stoney.
09:48It's 97.1.
09:49I'm sure it was a great day.
09:49I'm sure it was a great day.
09:49I'm sure it was a great day.
09:49I'm sure it was a great day.
09:49I'm sure it was a great day.
09:49It was a great day.
