00:00In Hull on Nantasket Beach, and there was a time I wondered if our next guest would ever be back
00:09on our show again.
00:10And I, over and over again, I said, what did I do to offend Bill O'Brien?
00:17And here he is. Can we have a round of applause for the great Bill O'Brien?
00:21Thank you. Morning, guys. How we doing?
00:23We're glad to have you back.
00:24Oh, you did nothing to offend me.
00:26All right.
00:27We just took a little break. That's all.
00:29All right. Good, good.
00:29No, it's great to be back on.
00:31You guys are the best.
00:31Well, it's awesome to see you bright and early here, and I'm sure you're excited about the season.
00:35We are. We are.
00:38We've got a brand new team.
00:39We've got about 50 new players with, you know, the portal guys and then freshmen coming in, and we've had
00:44a really good offseason.
00:46Winter was good.
00:47Spring practice was really productive, and these guys are – they've been here for about five weeks in summer training,
00:53and they take a little break for the 4th and come back end of July, and we get going August
00:581st.
00:58And I saw – I think I saw BC did a deal with meatball in a cup, and you got
01:03an extra 50 grand to spend on burgers.
01:07Is that accurate?
01:08I don't know.
01:09That's a way of – they tell me how I can spend the money.
01:12So, I don't know.
01:13Meatball in a cup, though.
01:14We talked about this a long time ago.
01:15Yes, we did.
01:16Well, as you can tell, I'm all about meatballs in a cup of questions.
01:20Same.
01:21I wanted to ask – we talked a lot about Nick Saban testifying in front of Congress.
01:28Where are you currently on the money in college sports, and whether it's a great thing,
01:36whether there are going to be issues going forward?
01:38Like, how do you feel about it, especially football?
01:40Yeah, it's a very complicated question.
01:42I do think that it is a good thing that players are compensated now.
01:47I think – I don't want to be too long-winded here.
01:49I think if you go back and you think about name, image, and likeness, it was really meant for Doug
01:53Flutie.
01:54It was meant for Bo Jackson.
01:56It was meant for the guys that were actually the faces of the program that brought Matt Ryan,
02:02that brought the money into selling the jerseys and all that.
02:05But at the end of the day, because of the TV money and all the things that came in,
02:10the players should be compensated.
02:11But now, there's no rules.
02:13And so, every market – every team has its own market.
02:17It's not like the NFL where we have 32 teams under the same salary cap rules.
02:20And so, every – there are 120 teams.
02:23There's 120 markets.
02:24The Boston College market is a whole lot different than the Miami market,
02:27which is different than the Wake Forest market.
02:29That's different than the Duke market.
02:30And we each have to determine what our market is.
02:33And so, we have to really learn what's important to us as a program.
02:38But, yeah, they should be compensated to some degree.
02:41But there has to be some type of – whether it's a collective bargaining agreement
02:46or antitrust law, whatever it is, there has to be some type of system put into place
02:51at some point in time.
02:52Almost like a salary cap.
02:53Right.
02:54It has to be.
02:54I mean, I don't think – BC is probably not going to be happy with me saying this
02:58because we don't want them to be known as employees at Boston College.
03:01Right.
03:01But, you know, they're getting compensated.
03:03And so, you know, there has to be some rules.
03:05I'm assuming that you can't compete money-wise with an Alabama or a Michigan.
03:12So, do you ever look at it and go, it's really – it's hard for us to –
03:16it's going to be harder and harder for us to be competitive?
03:20Yeah, we don't – another great question.
03:22We don't really try to compete with them.
03:24What we try to do is say, okay, who is the type of guy that can really fit
03:29what Boston College is all about?
03:30It has to be a talented football player, quite obviously, but comes from a family
03:34that understands, like, hey, you know, if I go to Boston College,
03:37yeah, I can make a little bit of money, but I can get a world-renowned degree
03:41at a school that really preaches and walks the walk of, you know,
03:45giving back to others, teach, and really trying to develop the whole person.
03:49That's what Boston College is all about.
03:51So, we don't – if a guy comes into my office and says, okay, coach,
03:54how much are you going to pay me?
03:55That's probably not the guy for us.
03:56Yeah.
03:57You know what I mean?
03:57That's really not the guy for us.
03:58I think we have to do a great job of finding those guys that understand, hey, yeah,
04:03I can make a paycheck, but also I got this degree in my back pocket for the rest
04:07of my life.
04:07Yeah, and I feel like when people listen to the show,
04:09they really hear me exude men and women for others.
04:12Yeah, 100%.
04:13No doubt.
04:14100%.
04:14Bill, I think it – like, are you kind of maybe excited because of what Indiana
04:21was able to do, right?
04:22Indiana is not – they're not the Alabamas.
04:24They're not the Michigan.
04:25They don't maybe have the same amount of money to spend,
04:28but what they were able to do down there and what – they were able to put that
04:33team together, like you said, through the portal with a lot of guys from James
04:36Madison and win a national championship.
04:38So does it give you, like, as a coach for a team that says, all right,
04:43if you buy into the culture and we do what we're supposed to do on the field,
04:47we might not have to spend like everybody else, but we can win a national championship.
04:52No doubt.
04:53There's definitely somewhat of a level playing field now, right, where Indiana –
04:58you know, when I was in the Big Ten or even when I was – you know,
05:02I've been coaching now 35 years, Indiana was never any good.
05:05And then all of a sudden, you know, Coach Cignetti goes in there and,
05:08as you just said, just flips it.
05:10But even look at, like, Duke.
05:11Duke won the ACC championship last year.
05:14And so, like, it can be done.
05:16You have to do a great job of evaluating talent, bringing in the right guys
05:20that fit your program, that fit your school.
05:22And I believe we're on the right track with that.
05:25You know, ours won't happen overnight, kind of like Indiana's did,
05:27because they do have some really good resources now that they gave Coach
05:31when he got there.
05:32But, you know, it can happen, there's no doubt,
05:34because the playing field is a little bit even.
05:36Billy, my question is really simply about how your job has changed in that –
05:41so you said you have 50 guys here that are new.
05:43Yep.
05:43So there's really no baseline that you can build off of.
05:48How does that impact the way in which you approach camp?
05:51How does it impact how quickly you're able to improve season to season?
05:55And how much extra stress is on your staff to really understand the guys
05:59in a quick way to get to work on weaknesses that you didn't really know existed?
06:03This is a big part of what we – we don't want to have 50 new players
06:06every year at Boston College.
06:07This is something we had to do this year based on who we lost,
06:10based on new resources that BC – BC made a bigger commitment to football in January,
06:15so we were able to go out and get some guys.
06:19We don't want to do this every year, though.
06:20We want to bring – we want to be a high school recruiting team.
06:24Let's just say 75% of the roster comes from high school recruiting,
06:2725% comes from the portal eventually, right?
06:29Because we want to develop guys.
06:31We want them to stay at BC for four years, get their degree,
06:33and help them improve as people, as players.
06:36If they want to play in the NFL, we have an idea of how to help them get to that.
06:40But we don't want to do this every year.
06:42So we really talk to our guys right now about what we're all about,
06:48taking pride in playing for Boston College, representing BC, what BC is all about.
06:53We talk about our values of relentless pursuit of what we call
06:58relentless pursuit of excellence.
06:59We're never going to – we may never get there,
07:02but we're going to pursue that every single day, toughness.
07:04We're going to be known as a tough football team.
07:06We just keep trying to really emphasize the core values of what we're all about every day,
07:12and hopefully we connect with these kids.
07:14I'm doing a thing called Team of Teams where I broke the team up into 10 different teams,
07:19offense, defense, crossover, guys that might not know each other.
07:21Let's come together.
07:22Let's connect as a team.
07:24Maybe that helps us retain players.
07:26Last year we lost 31 players.
07:28We get poached.
07:29So, like, our best players, our start in safety is at Miami now.
07:34You know, our start in receiver from last year is at Arizona State now.
07:39Our start in running back is at Indiana now.
07:41So we replace them with very good players, though.
07:44We feel really good about how we replace them, but we don't want to do that every year.
07:48We want to really work hard to retain guys, and we're doing – I think we're doing a really good
07:53job of that,
07:54of connecting with the kids, and I think that's a big deal.
07:55One of the stories lately that's been catching my attention is the Brendan Soresby situation.
08:01I'm kind of curious your thoughts on, you know, the NFL denying him entry into the supplemental draft,
08:07kind of his whole battle alongside Texas Tech trying to play, trying to get his eligibility,
08:12and if you really think that, like, gambling is kind of becoming a problem for a lot of these guys
08:16in college sports.
08:17Yeah, so Soresby, I haven't really studied it closely, but, you know,
08:21the supplemental draft doesn't happen every year, right?
08:24The last time it happened, I think it was 19 maybe or something.
08:26So it happens for guys that, you know, maybe they did get into a little bit of trouble
08:32or whatever might have happened.
08:34Failed academically.
08:34Failed academically.
08:35You know, something that happened, maybe got DUI, whatever, right?
08:38And they came back from that.
08:40Not 9,000 bets on games.
08:42Yeah.
08:43I mean, the guy bet 9,000 bets.
08:44I mean, the guy's got a problem.
08:4540 times on his own team.
08:46That doesn't mean he'll never play with him.
08:4790,000 dollars, right?
08:49Yeah, 90,000 dollars.
08:5090,000 dollars.
08:51On his own team.
08:5340 times he bet on his own team.
08:55Yeah, I don't think the NFL's not ready for that.
08:58But I do think the kid, maybe if he shows rehab over the, you know,
09:02a course of time, maybe he'll have a shot to get in there.
09:04Because he's a good player.
09:04He's a good player.
09:05The gambling aspect, Shyam, is very – it's prevalent.
09:09I mean, we talk to our guys probably once a month.
09:12We bring in somebody – watch that sign.
09:14And we bring in somebody that, you know, an expert on, you know,
09:19gambling or maybe somebody that served time for different crimes
09:23and things like that.
09:24We bring people in to talk to our team about that.
09:27It is a big deal.
09:28You know, right on your phone you can –
09:29It's so easy.
09:30It's so easy to do it.
09:32He just placed a bet during this interview.
09:35I did a little bit of time in the Clinton jail in high school.
09:38If you want me to come in, I could –
09:39Oh, I'm sure you guys –
09:40I could come in and talk to the fellas if you want.
09:42A little scared straight.
09:45I actually think if we brought the four of you guys in,
09:47it would be pretty cool.
09:48Well, Shyam wants to –
09:50Shyam wants to do a clinic.
09:51He wants to – he has designed to play.
09:54Yeah, he is.
09:54Am I right?
09:55I'm now a championship-winning baseball coach.
09:57I have credits now.
09:59How long do we have with you?
10:01As long as you want.
10:02Can you hang for five minutes?
10:03I still get a physical at 9 a.m.
10:06That sounds like a blast.
10:07It's my first physical in three years.
10:09My wife's making me do it.
10:11They're going to – the guy's going to say,
10:13can you – how many drinks do you have a week?
10:15Exactly.
10:15I don't know, two or three.
10:17Do you smoke?
10:18Do you smoke?
10:19You know, you're going to stop eating pizza.
10:21And you lie.
10:21No.
10:22Stop eating pizza.
10:23Five drinks a week, that's it.
10:25When really it might be ten.
10:26When the guy goes, how many drinks a week do you have?
10:28I go, how many do you have, doctor?
10:31Yeah.
10:31Yeah.
10:32He goes, yeah.
10:33I mean, look at you.
10:34Same amount as you.
10:35You don't look that great.
10:37All right.
10:38We are with Bill O'Brien on a road show Friday at the Parrot.
10:44The toss left.
10:45On the New England Patriots, they get A.J. Brown.
10:49How much better should he make Drake May?
10:53A.J. Brown is, you know, he's probably in the latter part of his career,
11:00but he's still a top ten wide receiver in the league.
11:02And so I remember being there in 07, I was a quality control guy,
11:06and we brought in Randy Moss, and he immediately changed the team.
11:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:12I remember, like, and he was at the latter part of his career, you know.
11:16Yeah.
11:16So, like, I remember the very first OTA.
11:18I remember walking out to practice, and we were, you know,
11:22it was kind of this time of the year or, you know, a couple weeks ago,
11:25whatever.
11:25And I remember Brady turning to Josh and saying,
11:28I don't care what the coverage is on this particular play.
11:31I am launching this summer pitch down the field.
11:34And he did.
11:35Yeah.
11:35And the guy, and you just watch Moss just, and we launched a 60-yard touchdown.
11:40And so my point is, like, those type of guys changed the team.
11:44You know, I can remember, like, when I wasn't there,
11:46but I know when he brought in Antonio Brown, which I know didn't end well
11:49and was only a two-week deal, but, like, that changed the team, right?
11:52They went down to Miami, and those type of guys changed the team,
11:55and Josh knows how to use them, and I'm sure they're fired up,
11:58and I know Drake May's fired up about it.
12:00Yeah.
12:00Bill, where do you stand?
12:02Because I've been – I'm all for this.
12:04The 2014 playoff.
12:07I know that the Big Ten, the ACC, the Big 12, they're kind of all on board.
12:12It's the SEC that's kind of putting their – you know,
12:15is kind of trying to stop it.
12:16Where do you stand on that?
12:17Because I feel like it just opens the door for a lot of teams to compete
12:21and have an opportunity to maybe get to a national championship
12:24that might not have had that opportunity with the 12
12:28or potentially if they go to 16 teams.
12:30No doubt you want a 2014 playoff, especially if you're us, right?
12:33Right.
12:34You know, if you go out and you catch lightning in a bottle,
12:36you have a good year, and you're in the top 24,
12:39you got a shot to be in a playoff, that's pretty cool.
12:42So I don't think there's any doubt.
12:44The SEC, they don't want more teams because they want the majority of the playoff
12:48to be their teams, you know, and it's a great – I've coached in all three conferences.
12:52I've been doing this forever.
12:54I've had a little bit of a journey, but – so SEC, Big Ten, and ACC.
12:58Look, the SEC is the best – I understand that.
13:02I really do.
13:03But, like, top to bottom, the ACC is a tough conference.
13:06When we go out – Wake Forest won nine games last year.
13:09You know, we had a bad year, but, like, our games were very close, right?
13:13You know, triple overtime, Michigan State, Cal, last possession of the game.
13:18You know, Stanford, last possession of the game.
13:20I mean, our conference is very, very difficult.
13:23And so I think it's more about how the conferences are marketed, too.
13:27You know, the SEC has a great marketing strategy, and they have really good teams.
13:32But the bottom teams in the SEC, they're not great.
13:35You know what I mean?
13:35I remember when I was at Alabama, we'd go play Mississippi State at that time.
13:39I mean, it was over at halftime.
13:40Right.
13:41I mean, like – so I think that having more teams can then give teams from other conferences an opportunity
13:48to get in there and go win.
13:50I think it's good for us, no doubt.
13:51So I'm not going to have you say anything negative about the current president of Boston College, Father Leahy,
13:57but I am so thrilled that we have a new president coming in, Reverend Butler.
14:01Jack Butler?
14:02Yes, sir.
14:02Coming in on August 1st.
14:04His administration takes over.
14:06Yes, sir.
14:06I've heard amazing things.
14:08What can you tell us about the man that will be leading the university going forward?
14:11Yeah, just a couple things.
14:13You know, Father Leahy, 30-year reign as the president of Boston College, and I do believe he did so
14:20much for BC.
14:21He raised BC into what it is today, an international, in my opinion, a top 20 school in the country.
14:28I mean, that's all – Father Leahy takes a ton of credit for that, and he should because he did
14:33an unbelievable job.
14:34Father Jack Butler is an awesome guy.
14:35He was the – he's been at Boston College for 22 years.
14:40He was the – most recently the vice president of campus ministry and mission.
14:44He really knows everybody on campus.
14:48He's connected with everybody on campus.
14:49He was the football team chaplain for 15 years from 2010 until my first year when he took a sabbatical
14:56before he's going to take over on August 1st.
14:58Loves athletics.
15:00He played football.
15:02He's just a really unbelievable human being, and, you know, I think we're lucky to have him.
15:07We're lucky to have him in the administration where you could promote him.
15:11I think that's a big key for Boston College to have someone like that, and he's going to do an
15:16awesome job.
15:17Is it true that Jordan Hudson calls her boyfriend Father Bill?
15:24How about those Red Sox?
15:28Let's go, Bob.
15:29What about Jalen Brown?
15:31I mean, what's going on?
15:32We got other things to talk about.
15:34Why am I turning red?
15:36What about Jalen Brown?
15:38You got the physical.
15:41I knew at some point it was going either to this or to something else.
15:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:47No, listen.
15:47We are delighted to have you back.
15:50Chime, you said Chime could design a club.
15:52No doubt.
15:53All right.
15:53He's got a piece of paper right here.
15:55Draw it up.
15:56Make sure there's 11 guys on the phone.
15:57I got it.
15:58What is – you've thought a lot about this.
16:01Yeah, well, so, yeah.
16:02I mean, we shot down the first idea.
16:04You know, play action, seam up the middle.
16:06No, we didn't shoot it down.
16:07It's been in existence.
16:08All right, Curtis.
16:10So, yeah, so I tried to cook up something.
16:11Look, my expertise is in baseball, but I wanted to really try and design something up, so I got something.
16:18Okay.
16:19I hope you're going to tell Coach about it.
16:21Yeah, so, all right.
16:22So –
16:22What personnel are we in, Sean?
16:24Trips.
16:25No, but it's the personnel.
16:26Like, is there 11 – is it 11 personnel?
16:27Well, personnel, 21.
16:2911.
16:29Like, who's out on the field?
16:31Do we have one tight end, three receivers?
16:32I mean, who's out there?
16:33So, it's 11 personnel.
16:34Okay.
16:35All right.
16:35Trips left.
16:36Okay.
16:36Trips left.
16:37Yep, Trips left.
16:37We got – I like to call it George Jetson.
16:41All right.
16:42Guy in the near slot.
16:43Jet motion.
16:43Yep, jet motion.
16:44Exactly.
16:45Love it.
16:45Already picking it up.
16:46George Jetson.
16:46Yep, George Jetson.
16:48So, jet motion, play action.
16:51He runs a wheel route up the field.
16:52So, we're faking to the back.
16:54All right.
16:54Correct.
16:54Not to him.
16:55Nope.
16:55He's just smoking it across the formation.
16:58Yep.
16:58All right.
16:58Wheel route.
16:59Correct.
16:59Right up the field.
17:00The single receiver.
17:01What's he doing?
17:01So, the –
17:03The X.
17:04That's – we got the tight.
17:05Yeah.
17:05Back side.
17:06Yeah.
17:07Trips left.
17:07Yeah.
17:08Trips left.
17:08This guy's coming over here.
17:09There's one receiver here.
17:10The goal is to win.
17:13Sean has –
17:13Wait, no.
17:14He hasn't –
17:15He hasn't –
17:17He hasn't –
17:18He hasn't figured this part out quite yet,
17:20but he has six wide receivers on the field.
17:22Right.
17:22So, just –
17:24Yeah.
17:25So, the tight end is lined up on the right side.
17:29Runs a post.
17:30Okay.
17:30So, the tight end is lined up wide.
17:32Wait a minute.
17:32It's Trips left.
17:33Okay.
17:34So, –
17:34Yes.
17:34It trips left.
17:35We got Eagle left.
17:36Yes.
17:36So, with that called Eagle left?
17:37The tight end's way up.
17:39Hey, I –
17:39The tight end's not attached to the line of scrimmage.
17:41We're using –
17:42Wiggy and I are using Patriots language now.
17:44So, we got the tight end as the X receiver.
17:46He's the single receiver.
17:47Yeah, yeah.
17:48We're running post.
17:49So, basically, clear out that right side for that wheel route.
17:51Yeah.
17:52No quarterback.
17:52Tight end is dropping back Statue of Liberty.
17:55Right.
17:55And next thing Puerto Rico.
17:56Yeah.
17:57Okay.
17:57All right.
17:58And then we got the –
17:59So, the nearside guy is in motion.
18:02The next receiver.
18:04Yeah.
18:04Which would be –
18:05Is that the F?
18:06Yeah.
18:06The slot guy.
18:07And Jones and Keefe coming up next.
18:11Yeah, right.
18:12That's the floor.
18:15The worst play ever to die.
18:16You need to post this entirely.
18:19I need to just –
18:19I need to draw it out.
18:20Oh, you got us a post in the wheel.
18:22You certainly have brought it out.
18:23It's been 10 minutes.
18:24So, F, slot guy.
18:26Yep.
18:26Yep.
18:27Running a comeback.
18:28Okay.
18:28He's running a comeback.
18:30Yeah.
18:30He's running a slot.
18:30Yeah.
18:31Slot.
18:31Okay.
18:31Okay.
18:32Those don't really exist, but we'll put that in.
18:34Hot route.
18:35That doesn't exist.
18:35So, what's the outside guy doing the Z?
18:38What's he doing?
18:38Drag.
18:39Drag.
18:39Okay.
18:40Drag's not going to do that.
18:40Come back.
18:41Drag.
18:42Yes.
18:43We got the tight end over here.
18:44He's running a post.
18:45We got a wheel route.
18:45Yeah.
18:46What's this number three receiver doing over here?
18:48Oh, no, no.
18:48He's the jet.
18:49Yeah, he's on the wheel route.
18:50And the running back says fake it.
18:51I'm confused.
18:52After the play action, he's in block.
18:54Ready break.
18:55Yeah.
18:55All right.
18:56Undefeated.
18:57Boy.
18:57No offense.
18:58That won't end in a sack.
19:00No, no, no.
19:01Come on.
19:02That sounds like one of those plays I designed in 23.
19:05It didn't work very well.
19:07It's like, George, this is like time all the time.
19:11Billy O's over there throwing his headset and screaming and yelling.
19:15Coach, I don't know.
19:16No offense.
19:17You'll get it when he does the install.
19:19Right.
19:19Yeah.
19:20Make sure you get extra time at practice.
19:21I need a whiteboard.
19:22You and I can run it through.
19:24Absolutely.
19:25All right.
19:25So, maybe give that a try.
19:27Yes, sir.
19:27Maybe spring.
19:28No doubt.
19:29We'll hold it to the off seat.
19:30Yeah.
19:31Experimental.
19:32Spring.
19:33All right.
19:33Listen, it's awesome.
19:35Good to have you guys.
19:36Awesome to have.
19:36How many, how many, well, I don't want to get you on, but what are you thinking about
19:41this season?
19:42Like, I feel good, Greg.
19:43I really do.
19:43We're a much better team.
19:46We were able to go out and get some really good players, some good guys.
19:49We're a different team.
19:51We need to go do it.
19:52I think, you know, starting out well is going to be important.
19:55You know, we have our schedule in the beginning is tough.
19:57We go to Cincinnati.
19:58We open up at Cincinnati.
19:59Then we come home here to everybody on the anniversary of 9-11.
20:05Yeah.
20:05It's Friday, September 11th in Alumni Stadium.
20:08We play Rutgers.
20:08So, that's a big, that's the red bandana game.
20:10That'll be the red bandana game.
20:11That's a big one.
20:11So, the first two games are awesome.
20:13Yeah, that's awesome.
20:14What you guys and what the school has done to honor Wells Crowther has been amazing.
20:18He graduated with my sister at BC.
20:20And that was something that sort of was this, like, small alumni of that crew sort of story that was,
20:28you know, celebrated.
20:29But the way the school has really amplified the message is really remarkable.
20:33It's a big deal for all of us.
20:35That documentary on him is extraordinary.
20:39All right, Bill O'Brien, everybody.
20:41We'll let you get to the doctor.
20:42Good luck, Bill.
20:43Good luck with your physical.
20:47Were you telling him about the play?
