00:08News agency Xinhua said a Navy submarine launched the missile,
00:12carrying a dummy warhead toward international waters in the Pacific.
00:16It said the launch was a quote routine arrangement,
00:19and that it was not aimed at any country or target.
00:23But the test drew criticism and concern from around the Pacific.
00:26Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the notice provided by China fell short of standard practice.
00:34This is one of those occasions where we must disagree with this action.
00:38And in particular, we point out that it is standard procedure for tests such as this for there to be
00:49given 48 hours notice.
00:51This was not done on this occasion.
00:53Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara expressed quote grave concern regarding what he called China's increased military activity.
01:02And Taiwan called the test an attempt to intimidate the international community.
01:07Xinhua did not specify what type of missile was launched,
01:11but the state-controlled Global Times tabloid, citing a military expert, said it was probably a JL-3.
01:17That is China's most advanced submarine-launched missile, which debuted at a military parade last year.
01:24Such missiles could reach the continental United States from Chinese coastal waters, according to a Pentagon report.
